aumholder is the home for the largest concentration of combat Soldiers outside of the United States. In addition to the main post, it consists of one subcommunity and is populated by American Soldiers, airmen, civilians and family members. Our Soldier population consists of nearly 15,000 individuals; 5,000 single and married Soldiers, about 6,000 civilian support personnel and close to 4,000 spouses, family members and children. Known as the “Home of Champions” and also “The Rock,” the U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder is located in the wooded hills of the Western Palatinate in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, just 30 miles from the French and Luxemburg borders and approx. 45 minutes from Frankfurt. The military community of Baumholder encompasses Wetzel, Upper Wetzel and Smith Barracks. The German city of Baumholder is walking distance from Garrison Headquarters and the home of the 1st Armored Division’s 2nd Brigade and Division Artillery. Baumholder history In 1937 the German government selected 31,000 acres of varied terrain to the north and northeast of the city of Baumholder to become one of the largest military training areas in Germany. After World War II, the military installation was occupied by the French Army and in 1951 the post was turned over to the U.S. Army. The installation is now controlled and operated by the US Army Garrison Baumholder of the Installation Management Command, Office of the Asst. Chief of Staff for Installation Management, Dept. of the Army.

Outdoor Recreation

Services and Programs offered by Outdoor Recreation, Baumholder For more information, call ODR at 485-7182/6202/6345 or go by Building 8167. Paint ball Field, Campground, Fishing Pond, Equipment Check Out Center, Sport Shooting Range, Archery Lessons, Unit and Group Trips, Hunting Program. Get back to nature; go camping Five minutes from main post near Rolling Hills Golf Course. ODR Campgrounds areas are available for rent all year round. ODR has 40 RV Sites available at $10 per day, three group sites for up to 100 people available at $35 per day. Pavilion next to driving range available for rent for $30 per day. Paintball field If you have your own equipment, the field usage fee is $20 per person, per day. If you need equipment, the field usage and equipment check out fee is $30 per person, per day. Special rates of $15 per person, per day are available for unit training time. Open year round. Max number of participants per session or day is 100. Group reservations are only taken on weekdays. Please reserve at least one week in advance. Trap and Skeet Range prices: 30rd trap $5, 15rd skeet $2.50, 30rd skeet $5, 25rd roll $6,15rd roll $5Range hours are from 1000-1500 hours, every day of the week except Wednesday. Open year round. Must have range safety class before use. Class offered at ODR range. Guns cost: $5.00. No reservations taken. SCUBA Certification Course price is $375 and online course work can be completed for free before completing the open water diving. Diving consists of two weekends and five open-water dives at Kronau Lake. Scheduling is flexible and weekends don’t have to be consecutive. Equipment is supplied. Cannondale full suspension mountain bikes are available to rent for $20 per day. Beginner to expert level local trail rides, guided trips and self guided tours. Awesome trails from level one to three (easy rides, technical and advanced). Guided trips vailable to the Pfalzerwald (1.5 hours from Baumholder near Landau) offering 15-70 km of epic single-track trails. Need group of 8 to make the trip a go. Group may be split into ability levels. Relax, go fishing ODR has access to a pond stocked with Rainbow Trout (pan size and up) five minutes from main post. Customers do not need a license to fish in our pond, but will need a permit. Coordination for the permit is available through ODR for $15 for a three fish limit, $25 for a five fish limit. Learn the skill of fly-fishing from a certified German fishing guide with a one day Rod and Gun Club introduction course, $80/$180 per person. Tackle and day pass are included. Course requires an eight-person minimum to make the course a go. ODR also offers intensive three-day courses. German Hunting Course This eight-week German hunting course is offered over weekends and twice per week for $150 per person. Attendees will become a licensed hunter in Germany with all weapon privileges. Minimum of 15 people required. You’re welcome to join and walk in groups, attend walk/run clinics, or walk on your own. The program runs throughout deployment. Attend fitness programs walking group, special walking clinics or walk on your own. TRX Suspension Training System at the Physical Fitness Center. Just show your ID card to the front desk and the staff will provide you with the TRX System, an exercise guide and a brief TRX orientation. Training combines strength training and cardio combined training using the participants own body weight. Suggested as a rehabilitation tool as well as for hardcore athletic training. Reservations for Unit Functions Reserve a sporting facility venue such as Minick Field, Iron Soldier Park, Hall of Champions Floor, or the Mountaineer Fitness Center Combative Room for a unit function. The goal of the HIRED Apprenticeship Program is to help teens develop the necessary confidence and employer-valued abilities to succeed in today’s competitive job market. Child, Youth and School (CYS) Services and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Partner Organization have joined together to prepare teens for these rapidly- changing conditions. HIRED Apprenticeship Terms consist of four (4) twelve (12)-week terms repeated annually. Opportunities to work after school and weekends exist year round in programs such as food service, child care, outdoor recreation, libraries, fitness centers, golf, and more. Teens may participate in up to two apprentice terms per year and will receive a stipend upon completion of each term. Participants must commit to 15 hours of participation within a seven (7)-day period for a total of 180 hours per HIRED.

Housing: 1,502 family housing units, the waiting time for government quarters could be up to 6 weeks depending on the bedroom requirement. According to the revised housing policy from HQ USAREUR/IMCOM, all key and essential personnel and accompanied Soldiers in the grades of private through staff sergeant will be housed in government quarters on post. All other Soldiers in the grades of E-7 and above and civilians will be housed on the local economy in private rental housing. Total private rental housing at this time is 870. Government- leased quarters are not available in Baumholder. They will perform throughout the year for various events. The singers are a mix of American and German volunteers that produce quality musical performances. Join the Hilltop Theater Group The Hill Top staff works with a large group of American and German Volunteers to produce quality English Language community theatre. The theater group is looking for volunteers who wish to discover the joy of performing. The Hill Top will produce a wide variety of shows this year including Dramas, Musicals and Comedies. Hilltop Community Theater is open to all ID cardholders and local nationals. A variety of performances -- mysteries, dramas, comedies, one-act plays and musicals. The Hilltop staff works with a large group of U.S. and German volunteers to produce quality English language community theater. Volunteers are the core of the theater and the soul of the performances. The Hilltop offers local nationals a chance to improve their on-the-spot speaking skills while offering host nation relations and a way for Americans stationed in Baumholder to touch the community. The theater relies on the dedication of volunteers who are willing to commit time and effort to creating the best possible experience for the audience. Volunteers who wish to discover the joy of performing are welcome.

Value Added Tax Relief 19% There are two types of VAT forms: the Unpriced form for purchases up to € 2,499.99 without tax and the priced form for purchases over € 2,500 without tax. Un-priced are $4 each and are used for everyday kinds of purchases such as furniture and clothes. The priced form is $6 and generally used for vehicle purchases/repairs.

For purchases using the Priced form, you must present an advance cost estimate (Angebot/Kostenvoranschlag) to the VAT Office BEFORE the actual purchase.

Installation overview: Located in the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz, 30 miles from France and Luxembourg. Garrison installations include Smith Barracks, Wetzel Housing and Quartermaster kaserne. It is home to the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and other support units/elements. Climate: moderate Western European climate with four seasons; due to elevation, phases of inclement weather during winter months. Installation population: About 5,000 military; 1,500 U.S. and host nation; civilians; 6.500 family members. The USAG Baumholder continues to be on the enduring installation list.
