Harness the power of print and digital combined Believe it or not, print has far from lost its power. Recent studies* have shown that magazine advertising is not only the most influential medium but also the most undervalued relative to its effectiveness. Global SMT & Packaging magazine delivers over 72,000 copies to industry professionals across the globe every month. The magazine is also distributed at all of the major industry trade shows around the world. No other magazine offers the kind of exposure your print

advertisement is getting with Global SMT & Packaging magazine. In addition, for print advertisement contracts of 3 months or more, we can “bring your full page ad to life” free of charge in the digital version of the magazine. Simply supply us with the concept and materials, and we’ll create a Flash animation that complements and works in conjunction with your full-page ad and distribute it in the magazine’s digital version. We can also add video to

your full-page digital ad. For the ultimate one-two marketing punch, we can create banner advertising for your company that ties into your print ad message. And check out at the section on eCard Decks (page 7) to learn about our cheap & effective ad campaigns that send qualified leads right to your inbox.

McPheters & Company, in cooperation with Condé Nast and CBS Vision, studied the relative effectiveness of advertising in various media: television, magazines, and the Internet. A full-page, full-color print magazine ad, they found, was five times more effective than the typical Internet banner ad. And a report from the Magazine Publishers of America used data from two studies—MRI’s MediaDay study and Deloitte’s “State of the Media Democracy” survey—to compare the influence that advertising exerted on purchases compared to the share of time consumers spent with each medium. Magazines, they found, exerted 5.5 times more ad influence relative to the time spent with that medium on an average day.

The magazines Europe and the Americas As high-volume manufacturing moved first to Eastern Europe and then Asia, the United States and Western Europe held onto and even thrived on specialized high-mix, low volume manufacturing. Now data shows that other manufacturing projects are beginning to return to these areas. According to the December 2008

issue of NASA Tech Briefs, rising shipping, materials and labor costs in China are contributing to this trend, along with delivery issues, instability of the supply chain and language or currency problems. Agility and ability to make changes are also key factors. Global SMT & Packaging, a monthly

magazine distributed in two editions— Europe and The Americas—feature regional industry news and columnists along with trade-show coverage and leading-edge technical features geared toward the specific needs of European and American manufacturers.

Columnists

Walt Custer & Jon CusterTopai—Every edition of Global SMT & Packaging carries the latest business intelligence from Custer Consulting, Inc. Walt is a world expert and former director of marketing for Morton International. Jon is vice president of Custer Consulting.

China

Korea is a key enabling country and home to many of the world’s leading brands such as Samsung, LG Electronics, AMKOR and many more. Penetrating this market will provide suppliers with the opportunity to be specified-in at the early stages of product development, before they are rolled out across the world. The Korean electronics manufacturing industry has recently transitioned to a high-value industry. Hence, it is necessary for Korean electronics manufacturers to operate cost-effective MESs (Manufacturing Execution Systems) using state-of-the-art equipment and materials to provide improved productivity and reduce costs and time-to-market. KPCA (Korea Printed Circuit Association) forecasts the PCB manufacturing market in Korea for next year will continue to expand, thanks to the growth of the semiconductor and display industries. Sales of electronic manufacturing equipment grew by 20% in Q1 20081, confirming Korea’s position as one of Asia’s fastest growing and most dynamic markets. Global SMT & Packaging—Korea enters its third year in 2010.

China is the world’s factory, producing over 44% of the world market and 82% of the Asian market in electronics goods, estimated to be worth $66.6 billion (2007)*. The country is vast, with manufacturing split regionally between Beijing in the north, Shanghai in the mideast and Shenzhen in the south. The Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces on the banks of the Pearl River Delta are the leading areas of electronics manufacturing in China. These areas specialize in automotive, consumer and industrial manufacturing, feeding the growing Chinese consumer market (over 1.3 billion). Other major manufacturing areas are based around Shanghai and Suzhou. The EMS market is diverse and split into distinct communities, such as Japanese CEMs, Taiwanese CEMs and other multinationals. The market is further segmented by distributors with focused relationships, e.g. military, medical, industrial automation and in many cases these relationships are also regional. Penetrating this market needs a diverse approach.

Online advertising Online advertising puts your company in front of readers again and again It’s said that readers need to see an ad three to twelve times, depending on the complexity of the message, before a message can begin to be effective. Online advertising puts your message in front of the reader time and again—on every page he clicks through and in every e-magazine that reaches his inbox—at a very reasonable cost. Global SMT & Packaging offers ad space on all of our websites and newsletters. Standard banner sizes are

468 x 60, 120 x 240 and 125 x 125. This year we also introduce the attentiongetting 300 x 250 pixel banner ad, perfect for Flash, video or just an eye-catching display ad. Interstitial advertising is also available—proven to be more effective than standard banner ads, interstitial ads give you the effect of ‘full page advertising’ on our website. If your banner advertising isn’t performing as well as you’d like or if you’re unsure of what to put in a banner

ad, our team can work with yours to create an effective 3-step digital ad campaign that raises curiosity, creates a need and delivers leads directly to your inbox. This 3-step campaign is available at no extra charge with digital ad space orders of three months or more. Contact your sales rep for the cost of this package for one- or two-month insertions.

Users helping users. If you’ve seen Yahoo Answers and similar sites, then you already know what this is: visitors to the globalsmt.net site, most of them working directly in the electronics manufacturing and advanced packaging industries, are able to post questions—about processes, defects, equipment, standards, etc.—and other site visitors can provide answers.

Directories 2.0

NEW!

How useful are online directories? Do engineers use them they way they would the Yellow Pages? How about if the directory was tightly integrated into information resources. That’s what the new Process Areas and Special Topics sections of the globalsmt.net website offer. Users click on a topic—Line/ Process Optimization, for example—and they’re presented with technical articles, white papers, industry news, Knowledge Exchange questions and videos related to the topic, along with a list of manufacturers offering related products and services. Click to view a manufacturer and you’ll get information about the company, along with all the news, videos and technical content we have for them. For a premium, manufacturers can upload their own videos, photos and other documents—product literature, PowerPoint presentations, whatever they want to make available to potential

Spotlight: eCard Decks Generate real leads using our new, monthly eCard Deck. Published in English, Chinese and Korean, they are distributed by email. Readers click on offers that interest them, which takes them to an information page where they can find data sheets or photos and tick a box for more information to be sent. The reader’s details are then sent to the advertisers for follow up. Advertisers are also able to access these leads online. And we promise you—the leads do come in! customers. Manufacturers are also able to add their distributors—and distributors each get a page of their own, showing their line card and contact info.

Global SMT TV Industry interviews, discussion panels, web seminars, show reports, process tips and techniques and much more are all a part of Global SMT TV. Broadcasting live from major shows across the world, Global SMT TV is a great spotlight for new product launches or new factory openings reaching a wider international audience.

According to a recent Forrester report, more than 70% of the US online audience is watching video on the Internet. How are you leveraging this audience to increase the impact of your marketing initiatives? 7
