University of Wyoming’s (UW) Meat Judging Team brought home a win October 5 in Wyalusing, Penn., at the Eastern National Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest. The Eastern National is the first contest win for a UW team since 2000. This year’s contest was the largest ever with 110 competitors from 16 land-grant universities. UW team members are Jaris Baker, Minnies Gap, McKensie Harris, Laramie, Emilee Brinton, Newnan, Georgia, Lara Allnutt, Walden, Colorado, and Austin Buzanowski, Pompey’s Pillar, Montana, and coach Zeb Gray represented Wyoming. The team broke the UW specifications record by placing second, and also placed second in beef grading and overall beef, third in reasons, fourth in beef judging and fifth in pork judging. Although the UW team did not win a single division, they finished ahead of the second place team by 18 points. “It’s rare for a team to win a contest without winning a single division, but to win by that margin makes it even more impressive,” stated Gray. “We put ourselves in a position to win because we were consistent across all divisions.” Brinton led the team with the second-highest individual score while winning high individual honors in beef grading and receiving second in overall beef. Allnutt was right behind her with the sixth highest individual score and placing third in specifications. Harris tied for first in specifications with a perfect score, and Buzanowski received tenth place honors in specifications. “I’m thrilled for the students on the team. It takes a tremendous amount of dedication and sacrifice just to compete on the team and nothing is guaranteed,” said Gray. “But to win, that was so exciting and I’m sure they’ll remember it forever.” For further information or questions about the University of Wyoming Meat Judging Team, please contact Gray at zgray2@uwyo.edu.

NDSU releases Elgin-ND hard red spring wheat

By NDSU Extension Service 2014 marks the first year that Elgin-ND, a hard red spring wheat variety from North Dakota State University (NDSU), will be available for general distribution to commodity growers. Elgin-ND’s attributes are yield, quality and disease protection. Elgin-ND has high yield potential. According to North Dakota variety trial results for 2012, Elgin-ND’s yield beat five of the top six most popular varieties for the year in eastern North Dakota. The average yield in 2012 for Elgin-ND across eastern North Dakota locations was 62.6 bushels per acre, compared with 58.2 bushels for Barlow, the variety with the most acres planted in the state. In addition to yield, protein levels of Elgin-ND are very good. Glenn is known for its quality and high protein, but Elgin-ND’s protein rivals it. In 2011, Elgin-ND had a higher average protein level (16.6 percent) than Glenn (16.5 percent). The average protein for Elgin-ND in 2010 through 2011 was 15.6 percent, which was just less than 0.1 percent below that of Glenn, but higher than Barlow’s 14.8 percent and Faller’s 14.3 percent. Elgin-ND has a good disease resistance package, including resistance to prevalent leaf and stem rusts. It has protection against the new leaf rust race Lr21, although it still shows some susceptibility. Most commercial varieties available do continued on Page C29
