BEST OF TRACY. | 3

Favorite people Let’s face it — Tracy isn’t as small as it used to be. With 80,000-plus souls sharing the city’s streets and subdivisions, it’s harder to know everyone by name. Still, there are some folks whom everybody seems to recognize. These are some of those people.

Accountant With more than 4,000 clients, Bill Pollard Jr. is the largest single tax preparer in the area — and one of the most economical, too, according to his staff. Pollard’s firm, in business since 1990, prides itself on efficiency and has earned awards for accuracy from the IRS. Every return is double- or triple-checked, ensuring satisfaction and prompting clients to return and refer their friends.

with a focus on sports medicine and rehabilitation. A postdoctoral sports certification gives him insight into injuries to shoulders, knees and ankles, as well as the spine. He also coaches patients on at-home techniques for long-term relief. “I enjoy just being able to evaluate the patient and get them better and on their way, especially the ones who have had chronic problems,” Nicholson said.

at Tracy High School before that. He’s the namesake of the West High’s top-of-theline stadium. And this year, like so many years before, Steve Lopez is once again Best of the Best among Tracy’s coaches. First: Steve Lopez, West High School football Second: Pinkie Phillips, Tracy Tritons swim team

When the boys and girls of Tracy need a holiday meal and a present to unwrap at Christmas, or just someone to talk to, Gene Birk is ready to serve. “I keep busy,” he said. “I just think a lot of people enjoy doing help, helping people. My thing is kids.” Birk helps out with the Boys and

Girls Clubs of Tracy, Good Samaritan Community Services, Tracy Interfaith Ministries and other groups. But he’s best known as founder of Brighter Christmas, 30 years ago this year. He says most of his helpers are themselves youngsters, and most return year after year. “They tell me, ‘It wouldn’t be Christmas if we couldn’t help with Brighter Christmas,’” Birk said. “I just love it.”

He deals with all lines of insurance — home, auto, business and life — and he’s involved with local schools and other organizations. Plus, there’s always someone available when clients need help. Perhaps that’s why he’s this year’s pick for Tracy’s best insurance agent.

Dentist Another year, another one-two sweep for Best of Tracy dentists and business partners Lance Matsune and Paul Teranishi. Matsune, who has practiced general dentistry in town the past 20 years, is loyal to his patients, and they’re loyal to him, voting him into this year’s top spot. Pet sitter Many people start their own pet sitting businesses, but few stick with it — and succeed — like Tracy’s longtime favorite pet sitter, Cindy Rogers of For Pets’ Sake. From the moment they walk into Trosien Orthodontics, people can sense the difference. With a coffee-shopinspired waiting room, a high-spirited staff and raffles for iPods and winetasting tours — that’s right, about 40 percent of Trosien’s patients are adults — this dentist’s office is designed to be fun, not frightening. “People get fired up about it,” Trosien said. “They end up liking to be here, wanting to come here.” Trosien, who also teaches orthodontics at University of California, San Francisco, provides across-the-board treatment, handling braces, TMJ problems and sleep apnea, as well as more complicated cases.

“It’s something you need to commit seven days a week,” Rogers said. “And you’ve got to love animals, because the animals know if you don’t.” Rogers, who took over For Pets’ Sake in 1991 when her sister-in-law moved out of the area, cares for pets in their homes while folks are on vacation. She offers midday visits for commuters’ pets, too, which makes up about half of her business. She’ll even tend to livestock — horses, sheep, goats, cows — whose owners are out of the area.

Word-of-mouth has helped Dr. Harpreet Grewal, a board-certified family practitioner, build his practice and earn Tracy Press readers’ votes this year as Best of the Best. Since 1985, he and his wife, Dr. Puneet Grewal, an internist, have operated out of Tracy Medical Group on Eaton Avenue. The name of the game, he said, is access: Grewal sees patients Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, just as he has the past two decades. “When people need us, we are here,” he said.

Baker is an expert in residential real estate and short sales, but just as important, she is unfailingly optimistic and genuinely cares about her clients, whom she counts as much as part of her family as her husband, daughter and son. “No matter what the market is, my clients are always there for me,” Baker said. “My tagline is, if you want a friend for life, hire me as your realtor.” First: Donna Baker, At Home Real Estate Group, 4598 S. Auto maintenance

“Bank of America helps build strong communities by creating opportunities for people — including customers, shareholders and associates — to fulfill their dreams,” Kenneth D. Lewis, bank CEO and president, said in a prepared statement.

Tracy residents know they can trust their cars and trucks to Richard and Susan Moe at M&M Automotive. After all, they’ve been in business at the same 10th Street address since June 1977. Specializing in general automotive repair — which, Susan assures us, covers everything — the shop has earned customers’ recommendations with timely work and dependable service, year after year.

Beauty salon

Building/lumber supply Car rental

This year, two salons shared the stage as Best of the Best: On Top Hair & Nail Design and Versailles Salon & Day Spa. On Top Hair & Nail Design, a small salon with a big reputation among Tracy Press readers, is making plans to expand not too far down the road. For now, though, owner Valerie Aldrete’s four longtime hairdressers, two nail technicians, and one assistant emphasize a personal touch, providing reminder calls before each appointment and refreshments for clients. “Even though we’re small, we try to make them feel special,” she said. When Jonie Endo started up Versailles Salon & Day Spa almost four years ago, her clients told her she needed a tag line to draw people in. Their suggestion? “Big-city style, small-town charm.” That’s just what folks can count on from this full-service salon, which offers hair styling, nail design, permanent and regular makeup, massage, and skin care from a friendly staff of 27. “We have such a seasoned crew,” Endo said. “People love that.”

M&M Builders Supply, now in its 63rd year on 11th Street at the eastern city limit, stocks what contractors and do-it-yourselfers need for their building tasks — from framing a new house to assembling models for a child’s classroom project. The business has a door shop and stocks pressure-treated lumber, utility poles, fence posts, framing lumber, plywood and a wide variety of moldings.

Third: Orchard Supply Hardware, 1975 W. 11th St., 834-2808

“I do every square inch,” Artoux said. “I don’t leave anything unturned.”

Second (tie): At Your Service Carpet Cleaning, 832-2863 Second (tie): Saaby’s, 835-2886 Many businesses attribute their success to friendly employees and customer service, but Tracy’s Enterprise Rent-a-Car takes that philosophy a step further, according to branch manager Saul Magana. “We like to make our customers laugh,” he said. “Most of the time, customers are dealing with an icky situation. We’ve got to lighten their mood somehow.” The car rental company provides replacement rentals while people’s cars are in the shop, as well as retail and corporate accounts.

Third (tie): Coit Drapery & Upholstery Cleaners, 832-0842 Third (tie): San Joaquin Carpet Service, 740-5810

Dog grooming Pampered Pet Boutique in the Safeway shopping center opened its grooming division just a year ago, but already it’s been named Tracy’s best. The reason is simple, according to Alaycia Garcia, who owns the boutique with husband Rick. “We’re here for the pets,” she said. “They’re No. 1 here.” The shop’s three groomers and two bathers offer full-service grooming for dogs and cats in a modern, clean environment. Property management

Real estate agency

With more than 20 years of experience in the field, the folks at RM Property Management provide full monthly service and tenant procurement options for property owners in Tracy and Mountain House, specializing in non-owner-occupied residential properties. They promise to professionally handle all the details for a reasonable fee.

This year, two real estate agencies split the top spot — Realty World Millennium and Century 21 M&M.

“We’re reliable,” said manager Wendy Andrews. “We care about what we do.” First: R.M. Property Management, 2311-A N. Tracy Blvd., 832-1612 Second: Jordan Group/Corral Hollow Property Management, 104 W. Tenth St., 835-1315 Third: Portfolio Property Associates, 834-0551

Realty World Millennium, a collection of nearly four dozen real estate agents, loan experts and property managers working out of a 10,000square-foot building on 11th Street, helps buyers find bank properties and sellers handle short sales, as well as working with lenders. “We have everything under one roof,” broker David Ormonde said. Century 21 M&M and Associates handles residential, commercial and agricultural real estate, specializing in bank-owned properties and short

sales. The agency capitalizes on an emphasis on online and new-media marketing, using tools including Facebook and Twitter.

Roofing service/repair Pinnacle Roofing Co. has spent eight of the past 10 years atop the Best of Tracy listings, and owner Jerry Yerian figures the reason is simple: He puts the same roofs on customers’ houses as he would put on his own.

“We’re the No. 1 Century 21 in the company,” said Larry Matos, president and broker. First (tie): Realty World Millennium, 1486 W. 11th St., 835-4545

The company offers a full line of residential and commercial roofing, with an emphasis on high-end homes and all kinds of reflective roofing.

Tire shop What keeps locals going back to Big O Tires, a Tracy institution for almost 26 years? Adaptability might be the key. When customers asked for more economical choices, Big O responded by exchanging some name-brand tires for less expensive models. The local shop is also putting the finishing touches on a major renovation of the interior and the workspaces where employees handle tire replacements, alignment, brakes and oil changes.

Travel agency After 28 years, the familiar faces of Old World Travel Services are still providing Tracy residents with full-service travel planning, including cruises, tours and group travel to all destinations. Hardware Van’s ACE Hardware, a local favorite, is the place to look for hardware and home repair supplies. Not only does the store carry connectors and other plumbing supplies that many places don’t, especially for Tracy’s older homes, but it also has a rental center and truck service. And the staff is always ready to locate a hard-to-find part or track down the answer to a tricky question. “I think we give them the best service around,” owner Harold Fudge said.

Raquel Castillo/Tracy Press

The oldest jewelry store in town — circa 1946 — is also the best jewelry store in town, according to Tracy Press readers. Like his father before him, Richard Caldron promises prompt, professional watch, clock and jewelry repairs and original jewelry design, all on site. “We just work hard, you know? We do everything ourselves here,” Caldron said. “I believe that’s what makes us number one.”

Pool and spa dealer

For years, Party Warehouse has been Tracy’s dependable source for party rentals, balloon bouquets, costumes, invitations and the countless doodads and thingamajigs that help celebrations come to life. This year, voters have recognized the store as the Best of the Best.

“We just try to provide good quality shoes, and those are hard to find in Tracy,” owner Bob Sarvey said.

Sporting goods

Not just a supply store, Fremont Pool Supply also sells aboveground pools and spas, along with everything to keep them sparkling and crystal-clear.

This year, Big 5 Sporting Goods has again taken the title as Tracy’s favorite sports store, providing brand-name equipment and apparel for children and adults’ athletics, recreation and outdoors pursuits. First: Big 5 Sporting Goods, West Valley Mall, 3200 Naglee Road, 8356464

Lunch After 29 years, Gerard’s Deli is Tracy’s tried and true lunch destination. Repeat customers and new visitors combine to keep the folks at Gerard’s busily dishing up hot meals from the hof brau Monday through Friday and assembling madeto-order sandwiches six days a week. “We’ve loved to wait on these people,” co-owner Lynn Gonsalves said. “We just appreciate them coming in every day.”

Generous fresh toppings, tasty sauces and a crust prepared from scratch at each restaurant make for a winning combination at Mountain Mike’s Pizza — and two Tracy locations ensure that it’s never far away. Owner Bob Sekhon says his pizzerias stay on top by providing great service, never cutting corners and always listening to customers.

Dance instruction Toddlers to adults can practice more than a dozen styles of dance — from traditional ballet to modern, hip-hop and belly dancing techniques — at the Academy of Performing Arts, Tracy’s favorite source of dance instruction. Hundreds of other local gatherings call the Ninth Street ballroom their home, too, which might be why the people of Tracy have named it their No. 1 rental hall for 2009. Press file photo

Once again this year, Tracy Press readers have shown their appreciation for the crews who douse grassfires, respond to emergency calls and protect homes all around the area.

Out of all the housing developments in Tracy, what makes a neighborhood stand out? In the case of Redbridge, a repeat winner in this category, the answer might have something to do with plenty of green space, a neighborhood pool and clubhouse, and residents’ very own general store. First: Redbridge Second: Hidden Lake Third: Oxford Square

When it comes to apartments, Sycamore Village Apartments on Central Avenue is consistently named Tracy’s best. In addition to a frequently praised maintenance staff, the complex is down the road from Poet Christian School, a new supermarket and shopping center is going up next door and the fire department has a station across the street.

Thank you Tracy for voting us the BEST! We appreciate you and your business!
