Mike Trotter and Claudia Nicolaou want people to feel at home at Town and Country Café. “I think it’s because we serve real food. What we hear from them, over and over again, is that this is what they would have made at home in terms of quality and freshness,” Claudia said. “I want you to come here and feel like you’re at home.” Mike, whose favorite lunch is the Mike’s Burger, of course — with some bacon, cheddar and barbecue sauce, — thinks the secret to their success is the personal connection he and Claudia have with people. “The big key to this place is when Claudia and I are here and come and talk to them,” Mike said. “The love that we have for each other and this business is the key to this being successful. “They love our weird concoctions that we come up with.” Claudia Nicolaou and Town & Country Café co-owner Mike Trotter say their customers enjoy the sense of fun on the menu. “You have to love creating food,” Claudia said of ideas that come from the kitchen staff and even customers. “The biggest one that all the servers and even the cook thought was odd was the tamale salad. You put a cold tamale on top of a Mexican-style salad. We sold more of those tamale salads than we did the hot tamales.” Mike said people love the quality of the food and service. “The food quality is what they like the most,” he said about his busy restaurant. “If you don’t mind waiting a
few minutes for a truly mom-and-pop place, step outside the chain restaurants.” Claudia, whose favorite breakfasts are the bacon-stuffed pancakes or T&A bene with tomatoes, knows her customers appreciate their culinary creativity, She said they were about to change the menu again. “We’re always trying to come up with stuff you can’t find in the city of Tracy. Olive Garden service manager Edward Anderson said the restaurant’s good Italian food and value might be what initially brings people in, but the service his staff provides turns diners into loyal patrons. “We like to be known as the Italian dining place of choice, but we like to be involved in the community as well,” Edward said. “We do a lot of contributions to the Boys & Girls Club (of Tracy) and give back to the community as well. Susan Pope, director of Tracy Kindercare, is confident in the preschool’s foundation of learning and attention to students’ needs. “We definitely have a family atmosphere here, and we try to meet all the individual needs of each child,” Susan said. “We know that some families come with special situations, and we try to help them the best we can.” The best part of the job, she said, is the students who surround her. “My favorite part is when I walk into each and every one of those classes and the children run up to me and love me and smile, and I know that we’re giving them the best that we can so they can be successful. “We want to say thank you.” According to Jennifer Rama, administrative director of sites, Tender Loving Care gives local girls and boys just what its name promises: tender, loving care. “We respect and love
our children and give the highest level of service possible. That’s the truth,” Jennifer said. community favorites Best Community Volunteer
The community has spoken and selected four Tracyites as the Best Community Volunteers. Darlene Quinn is the director of Tracy Interfaith Ministries — selected by Tracy Press readers as Best Community Organization. In that role, she supervises dozens of volunteers and leads efforts such as giving hundreds of backpacks to local children going back to school, providing Christmas and Thanksgiving meals to families, and finding and distributing winter coats to people who need them. That is all on top of the food and home goods distribution Tracy Interfaith does daily with the help and support of 27 local churches and organizations. Steve Abercrombie, a former police officer and Tracy city councilman, also wears a lot of hats. He is an educator and leader of Drug Abuse Resistance
Education in several local school districts, helps organize Brighter Christmas and participates in nine other community service organizations. This year, the Tracy Chamber of Commerce selected him as its Male Citizen of the Year. Kim Gray loves animals. Just ask anyone at the Tracy Animal Shelter. She has passionately supported the effort to build a new shelter for years, and this winter the city expects to open a state-of-the-art new facility. Kim created Animal Rescue of Tracy in 2003 and devotes her time — the equivalent of a full-time job — to trying to make sure animals are rescued, fostered, adopted and saved from euthanasia. Her efforts did not escape the notice of the Tracy Police Department, which this year named her its Volunteer of the Year. Donna Baker raised her family in Tracy for the last quarter century and taught her
children to give back in any way they could. Over the years, she has been involved with McHenry House Tracy Family Shelter, Relay for Life and Tracy Learning Center, where her kids went to school.

Ron Glaze, manager at Tracy Computer, said competing with larger electronics places is easy when you are invested in the community. “We’re not necessarily trying to sell a newer computer system like those guys, we’re trying to give the customer what they want,” Ron said. “I think our biggest thing is the fact that we offer free diagnostics and offer more service than the others. We tell them what’s wrong with their computer for free, and then they can decide if they want to fix it. It’s no pressure.” Tracy Computer offers computer tune-ups for $49. “We do quite a bit for the customer at a fraction of the price.” And if the customer wants to keep a 20-yearold system running? “That’s what they’re comfortable with. We try to fix it for them and keep everything to where they can use it.”

Hard work and structure are the foundation for Tracy’s favorite personal trainer, Rich Rodriguez of Healthy Fit Boot Camp. “People actually enjoy coming here, even though they know they’re going to get their butts kicked,” Rich said. He spoke of the benefits of tailoring plans to people’s specific goals. “For personal training I can say, What do you want to work on? What do you want to do?”
Rich said. “I had this woman come in who was 66 years old, had bad knees and had never done any weight lifting or resistance training. I don’t even know why she came in. She had 100 excuses why she couldn’t do it. I told her to give it a month. Ken Cefalo, the owner of Main Street Music, has been instructing students in music for more than 40 years. “I love seeing the young kids excited to learn music,” Ken said. “I love seeing the kids come into the store with their instruments on their back, excited about playing music. I think my
favorite thing to hear from a parent is when they come in and tell us their child is doing better all around in music and in school since they started music lessons, and we hear that fairly often.” He and the 21 other teachers at his store strive to enhance the lives of young people “Everything around us is music. Her daughter Ruby Velazquez, who works with her mother at Ramona’s Housecleaning, says their customers do all the talking for them. “We do get a lot of referrals from our customers.
