Wines

A Wine Blog by… The Green Winer

On this first Wine Blog in TownTaster, I thought that it might be appropriate to talk about…"Florida Wines"! When we think of Florida, we usually think about beautiful white sand beaches, gorgeous warm weather, bountiful sunshine and delicious Florida oranges. Yes, every one of those is a true and accurate description of Florida. In the minds of most Floridians and tourists alike, Florida is defined by each of those fabulous assets. When we think of wines, however, we rarely think of Florida produced wines. It is my prediction, that in the future, Florida produced Listing Information wines will be added to that list of defining assets. What makes me say that? Well, quite simply, we now have the grape varieties that will, and do, thrive in our environment. My wife (Lenora) and I own and operate a small vineyard and winery in eastern Manatee County (Bunker Hill Vineyard and Winery). We grow a variety of grape known as “Muscadine”. Its heritage is native to the southeast United States and it IS a fabulous grape. In order to survive and prosper in our hot and humid environment, nature endowed this grape with one of the thickest skins of any grape in the world. As it turns out, that thick skin is an asset that’s almost unbelievable. It has 40 times the anti-oxidants and 7 times the resveratrol of any grape in the world! When you make

a wine with this grape, you’ve got a wine with ‘World-Class’ potential! Every type of wine that we currently enjoy can be made from varieties of this grape. Reds, Whites, Rosé Blush and even Sparkling wines are being made by Florida wineries. Currently, there are approx. 33 Florida Farm Wineries within the State of Florida. To obtain a list of these Florida wineries, go to the “Florida Department of agriculture and Consumer Services” web site at http://www.florida-agriculture. com/consumers/wineries.htm. A recent action by our Florida legislature will do much to encourage the growth of our Florida wine industry. By changing the rules to include sustainable agriculture (nature produced grapes, fruits and berries) and Florida grown fruits and vegetables, more environmentally conscience wineries will enter the Florida wine scene. The result should be more and more

diverse wines for us to enjoy. So, in the future, when you’re thinking about wine, please consider Florida Wines. Thank you…'salute and happy days'! Is there anything more glorious than the sweet juiciness of a peach? The peach is so popular that it’s even managed to become the go-to adjective to describe all things good and wonderful: ‘She’s a real peach’ or ‘I’m just peachy keen.’ Georgia proudly displays its association with its state symbol as a badge of honor. It’s sweetness has been the subject of songs and poems and baby-making since the dawn of times. And once those babies become young children, they are, undoubtedly, begging their parents to read aloud about James and his adventure in what seems to be everybody’s favorite fruit. Oh, the wonderful peach. Low in calories with no saturated fats, fresh peaches are full of vitamins such as A, B-carotene and C, known for its awesome anti-oxidant effects which can help boost your immunities while clearing your body of free radicals. Of course, where there are vitamins there are generally minerals and the peach is no exception. Potassium, flouride and iron promote healthy bones, teeth and red blood cells. The perfection of the peach knows no bounds. The Three Kitcheneers make no bones about it: we are ice cream freaks. So, when the opportunity came to mix our beloved cold treat with summer’s most fantastic fruit, we jumped at it. This ice cream has several secret flavors that will keep tasters guessing. Bourbon, lemon juice and sour cream add

just a bit of tartness and boldness that complement the heavy cream, sugar and fruit in the most delicious way. Peach ice cream will turn any summer meal into an event to remember. Grilled meats, roasted fish, and fresh salads pair beautifully with the bright flavors in this dessert. It can also accompany freshly baked pies with ease, and couples magnificently with chocolate in any form. Or, you could always just scoop it into a bowl or onto a waffle cone for a luxurious indulgence on hot June afternoon. As always, we suggest buying local and/or organic fruit and ingredients, if possible. Buying local means your peaches only have to travel as far as your car ride home and buying organic means you can enjoy your ice cream without added ingredients like pesticides, chemicals or genetic modifications. We know it can sound harpy to suggest buying local, but one bite of a ‘real’ peach and you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about! Plus, when you can feel good about the ingredients you are using, it means you can eat more of them, right? Right? We sure hope so because we are polishing off our second batch of ice cream right now. Let us know your favorite ice cream pairing or check out our other delicious recipes at http://www.threekitcheneers.com

PeachIce Cream

1 1/2 pounds ripe peaches

(about 6 small), peeled and pitted

1/2 cup water 3/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon bourbon 2 teaspoons lemon juice ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 tablespoons sour cream 2 cups heavy cream pinch sea salt

Coarsely chop the peaches. In a small saucepan, combine the peaches with water and simmer over medium heat until soft and water becomes syrupy, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in sugar and bourbon until sugar dissolves. Let cool to room temperature. In a blender, combine peach mixture with lemon juice, vanilla, sour cream, heavy cream and salt. Blend until almost smooth, leaving some chunks for texture. Chill overnight in refrigerator. Churn mixture in ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s instructions. Serve fresh from the machine as soft serve, or freeze for a few hours until firm.

Tell us more… An extended review of Canta Rana By Wren Pearson, TownTaster

What a thoroughly delightful evening with Chef Diane Durand. Our meal started with a bowl of CANCHA, which is similar to corn nuts but not hard and jaw breaking. These are soft and salty, served with a cilantro based dipping sauce that has a slightly spicy finish. It’s a perfect companion to a bottle of CUSQUENA beer, a Peruvian import. A variety of wines from Peru were also available along with other beers and soft drinks. For appetizers, we split orders of TAMALITO CRIOLLO, a tamale-like dish of northern Peru (Piura-syle) corn stuffed with pork and onions cooked in plantain leaf and accompanied by salsa criolla (salsa of onions, peppers and lime). That dish alone would bring us back. Our other appetizer was PAPA A LA HUANCIANA, chilled potatoes with a creamy Aji Amarillo (yellow chile peppers) and cheese sauce, Peruvian black olive and slice of egg. This is a lovely alternative to traditional picnic fare potato salad and a recipe I’ll happily make myself soon. Both appetizers were surprising and delicious, full of new flavors and textures. The entrees were fantastic. Jamie ordered SECO DE CHABELO, a Piura-syle thick stew of fried pork, onions, tomato, plantains and chicha de jora, a Peruvian beverage that may or may not be fermented. The dish was delicately spiced but very hearty. I ordered a fusion dish from Puerto Rico called MOFONGO CON CAMARONES AL AJILLO – mashed green bananas stuffed with shrimp and garlic sauce. The garlic was strong but sweet making the shrimp out of this world tasty. The mashed green banana is very filling but not in a heavy way. Both entrées were served in hand-turned wooden vessels that Chef Diana’s mother hand custom made for the restaurant, right down to the inscription of Canta Rana on the side. These bowls keep the food piping hot right to the bottom as I discovered when I spooned the bottom half of the entrée into a container to take home. We had a high spirited chat with Chef before the dessert course, hearing of her background and the Piura region of Peru. Those few minutes were just right for a bit of tummy settling, leaving us in perfect shape to totally enjoy the FLAN DE COCO or coconut flan/custard served with small dollops of whipped cream. What a gorgeous dessert – creamy, not too sweet – just right. What a splendid evening. Exotic comfort food that will surely lead us back to Canta Rana. Thanks so much for sending us there! Tell us more… An extended review of The Star By Libby May, TownTaster The Star Thai and Sushi restaurant provided a wonderful dining experience. On entry, we immediately felt comfortable and welcomed. The restaurant was almost full, which surprised us for a Sunday evening. Many diners seemed to be familiar with the staff and each other. It seemed that many were regulars, possibly from the nearby neighborhoods. Comments to staff from other tables were glowing compliments regarding their meals and service. Everybody left happy! Favorite Menu Item: Everything! The Scallops Katsu with creamy caviar sauce was absolutely wonderful! The light breading was nicely crisped, while the scallops were tender and sweet. The caviar sauce was really special! The tempura shrimp and vegetables were great! The tempura breading was nice and light, letting the flavors of the shrimp and vegetables shine through. The combination appetizer for two was very good, especially the Chicken Sa-tee and the Crab Rangoon. The chicken and shrimp in the Panang Curry were very tender and delicious. My biggest regret is that we did not order any Sushi. Our waitress, who was right on with all her suggestions, offered it but there’s only so much you can eat! I’ll definitely have some the next time I go, and there will be many next times!

Hello! Just wanted to tell you about our evening at Woody’s River Roo. I won a $25 gift card off Town Taster’s Facebook page. I saved it until my daughter’s friends were here from Cleveland, OH for Spring Break. There was a two man band who was playing tunes from Jimmy Buffet and some oldies. I ordered a burger and fries, my daughter’s friends both ordered chicken fingers and fries and my daughter ordered a cup of clam chowder soup and fried pickles. We were all very happy with our choices! The portions were plentiful and the taste was amazing! The view of the river was awesome and so calming, even though every table was full and there was alot of chitchat along with the sound of the band as well. Thank you for the contest! We had a good time and we will go back. Thank you, Teresa Alexander

The 2nd Annual Food and Wine on Pine has wrapped up for another year and the organizers are very pleased with the outcome. This year the skies smiled with beautiful weather and according to crowd estimates, approximately 3000 people attended. The crowds consisted of foodies, wine lovers, couples, families, visitors and locals. Some came from out of area locales such as Tampa, Orlando and Lakeland proving that the word about Food and Wine on Pine is getting out. The distribution is as follows: Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra received $3000, Anna Maria Island Cultural Connections $2000, Anna Maria Island Community Center $2000 and the Anna Maria Island Historical Society and Anna Maria Island Preservation Trust each received $1000. Bed and Breakfasts...what a find...there are many in the Sunshine State, from northern Florida to the Keys as well as Manatee County. I’ve lived here for years and never knew Manatee County had any! Another thing I just discovered is that Manatee County is more diverse than I thought. It’s rich in heritage as well as European culture. We have a plethora of different venues at our doorstep...each with it’s own charm and uniqueness! And I bet I’m not the only one who did not know it...that is until now! I am a creature of habit, so I’m sure like alot of you, it is easy to be comfortable with our routines and frequent the places we know and like that are usually close to home. This is all great, but what I discovered was that there are some very special pockets of old world charm neatly tucked away within our county’s borders, just waiting for us to find.

I’ve stumbled upon some great finds just by making a wrong turn. One of them is The German Inn Bed & Breakfast with a white picket fence, just off Manatee Avenue, on 15th St. W., a few blocks from Main Street within the historic district of downtown Bradenton. The German Inn reminds me of my grandparent’s home back in New York. It has 6 bedrooms, each with a different name and motif. They offer gourmet breakfasts and have Kaffeeklatsch (coffee & tea with homemade German cakes). What a nice way to spend a day with the girls, mom, grandmother or daughter! They also offer children’s tea – a perfect setting for a little girl’s tea party birthday. You don’t have to stay there to enjoy an afternoon tea, this is open to everyone. The afternoon teas are accompanied with tasty treats such as scones, cakes and finger sandwiches. Your innkeepers also recently put in an authentic Beer Garden. The hours are 11:30 - 2 and 4pm - 8:30pm Monday - Friday, Saturday and Sunday 4pm - 9:30pm. More hidden gems include the Riverside Bed & Breakfast in Palmetto, The Harrington House on Holmes Beach and The Cypress in Sarasota. If you want a secluded getaway these are the places! Just off the beaten path but still close by, you will feel immersed in a different time or country...the houses are large, old country homes with porches and all the perfect finishing touches! Want a nice relaxing “staycation” or date night? Why not spend the night? These Bed and Breakfasts are beautiful and affordable. The charm of each of these locations is awesome. You are just a short stroll away from the beach or river. You can stay in and enjoy the amenities or go shopping and get a bite to eat. They are available for weddings, family gatherings, afternoon teas, bridal showers, baby showers, birthday parties, etc. What a nice gift it would be for somebody special in your life! So let’s get out there and experience some different cultures and traditions and for those who miss “home”, check these places out...I’m sure it’ll bring back memories!
