One Day, Something Happens: Paintings of People An Arts Council Collection Touring exhibition Curated by Jennifer Higgie 15 October – 8 January, Free One Day, Something Happens, an Arts Council Collection Touring Exhibition, is the first in a series of exhibitions at Towner as part of the National Partners Programme. Launched alongside the Arts Council Collection’s 70th Anniversary celebrations, the programme will see four galleries, Birmingham Museums, Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Towner host and curate a series of exciting and innovative exhibitions drawn from the Collection increasing nationwide access to the very best of modern and contemporary British art. One Day, Something Happens explores the everyday theatricality of the body. The artists in this exhibition approach figuration in very different ways and the people they depict are both imaginary characters and real people. Jennifer Higgie’s fascinating selection of works from the Arts Council Collection, as well as works from Towner’s Collection, teases out common themes across the decades: work, introspection and individuality, joy and loneliness. Featuring works by artists ranging from Walter Sickert, Lucian Freud and David Hockney to Rose Wylie, Steven Claydon and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

Ravilious Room

Jarman Award

Towner holds one of the largest public collections of works by artist Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). Our permanent* Ravilious Room is a dedicated space to admire a selection of his finest watercolours, prints and ceramics, explore our comprehensive archive and browse books on the artist. To accompany our exhibition Towards Night, the Ravilious display will draw on nocturnal themes and echo the world of wonderment explored in the exhibition. This display will feature many wood engravings by Ravilious and include his illustrations of the signs of the zodiac for the 1929 Lanston Almanack.

We are delighted to be presenting works by artists shortlisted for the prestigious Jarman Award. The six shortlisted artists’ works will be screened continuously throughout the day in the Junction Box. The Film London Jarman Award recognises and supports artists working with moving image and celebrates the spirit of experimentation, imagination and innovation in the work of emerging artist filmmakers.
