ADDRESSING ALZHEIMER’S ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION OF GREATER MISSOURI by stephanie wallace MORE THAN 6 MILLION PEOPLE ARE LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE in the

United States. For every person diagnosed, there are, on average, two others who take on unpaid caregiving roles, accounting for another 11.5 million people who must contend with the disease daily. Last year alone, Alzheimer’s and other dementias cost $345 billion in health care costs nationally, and that number is estimated to rise to $1 trillion in the next 25 years. These numbers highlight the urgent need for action. The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Missouri is dedicated to tackling the issue through education, advocacy, research and services for individuals living with the disease. The association offers an array of important services to families dealing with Alzheimer’s, including a 24-hour helpline (800.272.3900) to answer questions and provide assistance whenever needed. The nonprofit offers in-person and virtual support groups for both Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers, provides educational programs to local businesses and community partners, and works with families in care consultations, including guidance on how to approach a loved one they suspect may have the disease. To make these services possible, the Alzheimer’s Association relies on community support. One of the nonprofit’s largest annual fundraisers is its Beacon of Hope Gala. This year’s event is April 27 at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. BEACON OF HOPE HONOREES JOHN AND LINDA TRACY John Tracy, executive chairman of Dot Foods, and his wife, Linda, will be honored for their significant impact on the association both locally and nationally. For Tracy, the cause is an extremely personal one. “I lost both my grandfather and father to Alzheimer’s,” he says. “It’s a disease that impacts not just the individual, but also entire families. We all know someone whose life has been significantly changed by it.” Having worked with the Alzheimer’s Association for 15 years, Tracy has served on the board for both the local chapter and national organization. Dot Foods also has been an important corporate partner, raising funds through an annual campaign and encouraging employees to get involved in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and other events. Tracy also directly supports research being done at Washington University School of Medicine by Dr. Randall Bateman to develop a blood test for Alzheimer’s. “Early detection is extremely important and can have a big impact on how the disease is treated,” Tracy notes. Thanks to innovative research, we are entering a new era in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Treatments like Leqembi have been approved by the FDA to treat underlying causes of the disease, not just the symptoms. Last year, the Alzheimer’s Association made a landmark $100 million investment into scientific investigations, helping to fund 271 projects around the world. In Missouri, 13 grants were awarded, including some to support research being done right here in St. Louis at Washington University School of Medicine and Saint Louis University. “My wife and I are humbled and honored to be recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association, but it’s important that we acknowledge the true heroes in the fight against this disease,” Tracy says. “Caregivers are on the frontlines, facing unbelievable challenges, and researchers are leading the charge when it comes to treatment, prevention and a cure. We are proud to support these efforts so that we all can look forward to a brighter future.” &

The 19th-century Dickensian image of a newborn baby left with a blanket and bottle in a straw basket has almost become a meme, but unfortunately, it’s still accurate. Some women who have just given birth realize they won’t have the financial wherewithal to support an infant. What to do? There is a risk- and blame-free alternative gaining in popularity nationwide, and a new mother recently took advantage of it at a so-called Safe Haven installed in August at a Mehlville firehouse. On Feb. 8, a newborn baby girl appeared in the station’s Baby Box, which is available only at select fire stations, police stations and hospitals. Babies left in a Baby Box are available for adoption in a month or so, following a medical exam and thorough check of missing-children cases. The little girl was the first in Missouri to be left behind in this fashion. Baby Boxes are designed with an alarm both to alert qualified personnel inside that there is a treasure to be retrieved from the climate-controlled enclosure (equipped with a nursery bed and blanket, of course) and to allow

“Watch out for flying children!” is the clever tagline for Circus Harmony, the ‘social circus’ based at the City Museum downtown. Alumni are performing at renowned outfits worldwide, including Cirque du Soleil. One is not doing his flips inside a traditional round circus ring anymore, but instead competes as a pro wrestler in one that has four corners, of course, until some nefarious fiend tries to pick him up and throw him out of it—Scrypts, a WWE wrestler, even has his own action figure. Former student Claire now walks the high wire with husband Alex as one of the legendary Flying Wallendas. But perhaps the alumna with a job even more challenging than that of a human cannonball, one of her former acts at Circus Harmony, is Elliana Grace: Now general manager of the troupe, Grace is helping the next generation reach for the stars. Online, Circus Harmony has released a short video, Finding Your Voice, illustrating how members discover their strengths and community at Circus Harmony, which has just begun its spring classes at City Museum; summer-camp schedules will be posted online soon. Drop-in classes for aspiring jugglers and unicyclists are ongoing, and free classes for youngsters and teens are available at several city recreation centers. In my opinion—not quite humble, yet widely publicized—the Mississippi River shouldn’t divide the metro any more than Interstate 270 should separate north, west or south county from civilization in the StL at large. Yep, we’re all pretty hidebound up in here. (Although we’re not going to get all tangled up in the Interstate 64 vs. Highway ‘Farty’ argument. Nobody can win that one.) So, regardless of where you went to high school, here’s a fact you may not cotton to, but is geographically sound: From downtown, you can get to the World Wide Technology (WWT) raceway in Madison, Illinois, faster than you could to any venue in Chesterfield, which is way out west just shy of K.C.—relatively speaking. You won’t even have to break any traffic laws, as most drivers who whiz past me are wont to do. So, there’s a great reason to put June 1 and 2 on your calendar: It’s the third annual Confluence Festival, where you’ll get to hear performances from the likes of rapper Ludacris, country-music chart-topper Riley Green. Gretchen Wilson of Pocahontas, Illinois, famous for her 2004 hit “Redneck Woman,” is on the bill with Big & Rich. And Waino! That’s right, retired Redbirds hurler Adam Wainwright, who’s parlayed his 200 career wins into a job as an MLB announcer, has a second side gig as a country singer. His single “Time To Fly,” a sweet tribute to his baseball career, is a darn good acoustic ballad in and of itself. More power to him, as well as to the muscular machines that will be roaring all hell-bent for nothin’ around the track for the NASCAR Cup Series Enjoy Illinois 300. Now, if you’re a NASCAR fan but not much into music—say what?!—you can purchase tickets just for the race, and vice-versa.

ballwin The concert coming up April 6 at Grandel Theater in Grand Center is called Harmony in Music. Its title just as well could have been Melody or Rhythm in Music, since all three are essential elements of the art form. Vocalist Seema Kasthuri seems as intent on making several distinct genres work in harmony during the performance. Traditional classical Indian compositions will fill the hall, often blended with folk, pop and rap. Yes, even rap. The beautiful song “Janivara - Higher Power” is infused with a spiritually leaning rap interlude by Zach Harrison of Columbia, Missouri: Maybe my hope is too low to think about a higher power Too busy checking my social analytics by the hour And how are we to be at ease with looking at ourselves honestly When all I see in my feed are people fake livin’ perfectly … My nine to fiver doesn’t mean I don’t want to dream. “There’s a thread that runs through, connecting us all,” says Kasthuri. “We should learn that we all really have the same goal.” The group, consisting of about six people, will largely perform Carnatic music, an Indian classical style, blending it with new age and American jazz. The concert will bring together the best of many worlds, touching on original scores and incorporating fusion. The audience stands to enjoy upbeat selections from The Beatles catalog, the smooth song stylings of Nora Jones, even a rendition of the Irish “Road to Tipperary”—with a comical hillbilly twist, no less—along with Bollywood’s infectious tunes. Kasthuri has been a practitioner of the Carnatic style for decades and will present several of her original compositions. One must note, quite
frankly, that she was less than wildly enthusiastic about the Fab Four. “I really like the lyrics,” she acknowledges. “The music is very simple.” Even after hearing her mellifluous vocals coupled with the adept players’ precise instrumentation, someone who’d first experienced the trendsetting British pop group on The Ed Sullivan Show, 60 years ago this month, may remain to be convinced. Joining Kasthuri will be national touring and recording artist Todd Mosby—a guitarist who will fuse jazz with North Indian Hindustani music, which he studied for more than 10 years under the legendary Imrath Khan, who actually built one of Mosby’s unique guitars. She and Mosby plan to showcase what traditional music can offer when presented with a jazz twist. The creative team includes rhythm expert, percussionist extraordinaire, dancer and metro dance instructor Prasanna Kasthuri (Seema’s husband), drummer Steve Davis and St. Louis-based jazz bassist Ben Coan. Listeners can expect the artists to improvise on traditional Indian ragas while exploring complicated rhythmic patterns. “There will be a lot of rhythm,” exclaims Prasanna, an accomplished drummer who was tired the afternoon we visited, but from footwork, not stick work—having taught a dance class that morning at the Kasthuri home and soon to leave for another. Q: I’m a seasoned marketing consultant and love my job. However, my boss can be overbearing—texting at all hours, let alone being rude to me in front of colleagues and clients. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve written my letter of resignation but don’t want his bad behavior interfering with a job I truly enjoy. Advice? A: These kinds of bosses who are overbearing, micromanaging or just plain annoying can be maddening. But before you lose your cool and resign in a rage and lose an otherwise fantastic job, there are a few tactics you might want to try to manage your difficult boss and have a professional and productive relationship. Analyze the Situation: If your boss is breathing down your neck or texting at all hours, what’s really going on? Was he on his way to a meeting and needed something from you to prepare or on his way back from a meeting that didn’t go well? We all have our moments so give your boss the benefit of the doubt. He might be having a rough time and once he’s through it, things will likely improve. Understand the Why: If it happens often, try to understand why your boss is overbearing—maybe his superior is the root cause or perhaps the rest of the team is not doing its best. Other professional and personal factors could be in play. Ask if there’s anything you can take on for your boss to lighten his load. Check Yourself: Step back and ask if your reactions are appropriate for the situation. Are you treating your boss as professionally as you could? Is your work up to speed or have you been slipping recently? Build Trust: Some managers worry that without constant monitoring, employees won’t do their jobs. Show that you’re not that kind of worker to build trust with your boss. Meet deadlines. Stay organized. Ask for help/clarification when needed. Meet or exceed expectations. Results speak volumes. Communicate Regularly: Consistent communication with the boss helps build trust. Provide a list of priorities and projects before the boss has his morning coffee. Provide status updates to confirm you’re on track to avoid interruptions. If the Behavior Continues: Have a conversation to address the issue and how you want to do your job as effectively as possible but need more autonomy—giving specific examples when you’ve been interrupted and the time it took time to recover. Ask if there is something that has prompted this close monitoring but be careful not to be accusatory in your tone. Stay Professional: It’s your best bet when it comes to an overbearing boss. It’s not always easy, but staying calm and level-headed during any interaction with him will help smooth things over and maintain your reputation. But if things don’t improve, it may be time for a new job.

As we turn our minds toward spring and all it has to offer, healthy skin and a vibrant appearance definitely should be on your agenda. Now is the perfect time to energize yourself with a thoughtfully designed skin care routine and rejuvenating procedures. Owned by Jackie Carr, R.N., ANP-BC, LE, Pur-One Medispa in Des Peres offers a variety of effective skin treatments. “Spring is a great time to think ahead about getting your skin ready for those special occasions that arise in summer,” she says. “Planning a series of treatments now can help you look your best when you’re busy later.” To prepare for warmer weather, Carr recommends that people take advantage of the last weeks of winter to get more invasive treatments, such as microneedling. Since the procedure makes the skin more vulnerable, it can increase risk of damage from sun exposure, making February and early March the ideal time for it. “Microneedling works by producing small holes at various depths in the upper layers of the skin in a controlled manner,” she explains. “During the process, the body’s natural healing cascade occurs, stimulating the production of type I collagen, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, increasing elasticity and improving texture and tone.” While there are several types of microneedling, Carr notes that radio-frequency (RF) treatments come with additional considerations. “Since RF-assisted microneedling can potentially penetrate deeper underlying tissue, there are some concerns that it may cause more damage and result in less desirable outcomes in the long run,” she says. “At Pur-One, we offer SkinPen, which is not RF. It’s the first FDA-approved mirconeedling device for the improvement of neck lines and acne scars. It’s been extensively studied, and its efficacy is proven.” Microneedling treatments can COURTNEY CARR AND JACKIE CARR be performed at a frequency of every four months, and results can take up to three months to appear as the skin repairs itself and new tissue forms. One major benefit of the procedure is that downtime is minimal, according to Carr. “Generally, you want to avoid skin care products and the sun for the first 24 hours, but after that, you can begin using physical SPF,” she notes. “After seven days, you can resume using medical-grade skin care. During the first 48 to 72 hours, patients can expect redness and swelling that gradually diminishes over a few days. Some flakiness may occur as well as the cell turnover is naturally boosted to regenerate.” To make the most of your microneedling treatment, Carr suggests pairing it with other procedures. For improved results she notes it can be alternated with chemical peels and paired with Botox Cosmetic to further soften wrinkles or cosmetic fillers to address volume loss. “While Botox continues to be the gold standard for neurotoxins, Pur-One now offers Daxxify or Xeomin as alternatives for people who may be looking for different results,” she says. “Discussing the differences with your trained provider can assist you in making the best decision for your lines and your budget.” & PHOTO COURTESY OF PUR-ONE MEDISPA

If you’re worried about the severity of your wrinkles or want to halt the progression of fine lines, there are several medical interventions you can consider—oftentimes with little to no downtime. Consult a medical expert in cosmetics to determine if any of these are right for you. Botox: To fight the formation of dynamic wrinkles, this is a very common injectable option. It uses various forms of botulinum toxin to temporarily paralyze or relax muscle activity. It also can smooth out existing wrinkles. There is no downtime associated with the treatment, and results are typically visible within a few days. Botox treatments are effective for around three to four months. Dermal fillers: Another form of injectable, there are a variety of types of fillers that are used to treat wrinkles. The most common is hyaluronic acid, found in brands like Restylane, and Juvederm. It uses a natural component of the skin’s connective tissue to attract water to keep skin hydrated and flexible. Other types of filler may be recommended to treat deeper lines or address volume loss that comes with age. Following a treatment of fillers, you may experience swelling and bruising for around a week. How long results last depends on the type of filler used.
Chemical peels: These treatments help improve the appearance of skin by increasing cell turnover. They work by using a chemical solution to remove the top layers of the skin, which allows new, smoother skin to grow back. Along with wrinkles, they can help with problems like acne, hyperpigmentation and scars. Chemical peels come in a variety of strengths, from light to deep. It may take a few light treatments to get the desired results. Deeper peels have more impact but take longer to recover from. Laser resurfacing: This technique uses short, concentrated beams of light to precisely remove the skin’s outer layer (or epidermis) while heating the underlying layer (dermis). It stimulates the production of new collagen, leading to the growth of new, firmer skin. Depending on the type of laser resurfacing, recovery usually takes from one to two weeks. &
A WRINKLE-REDUCING LIFESTYLE Skin damage that could lead to earlier or more prominent wrinkles can be thwarted. Along with a good skin care routine (don’t forget sunscreen!), here are some simple changes you can implement. EAT A HEALTHY DIET AND REDUCE SUGAR INTAKE. STAY HYDRATED. LOWER ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION. DON’T SMOKE. EXERCISE MORE. IMPROVE YOUR SLEEPING HABITS. REDUCE STRESS.

RAISING THE BARRE SAINT LOUIS BALLET
by stephanie wallace ST. LOUIS IS HOME TO ITS FAIR SHARE OF CULTURAL GEMS. Saint Louis Ballet with its world-renowned director and accomplished dancers, is among the most impressive. As the only professional, resident ballet company in the region, it enriches the local arts scene through its classical and contemporary productions and its support of dancers and other artists. Saint Louis Ballet was established in 1975, and in 2000, Gen Horiuchi joined the organization as executive and artistic director. Under his leadership, the nonprofit has grown from a small civic company into a preeminent dance institution. “The level of both the dancers and the productions has grown tremendously in the last two decades, and simultaneously, our audience has expanded significantly,” he notes. “We now welcome more than 15,000 audience members annually to our performances, compared to the fewer than 2,000 when I joined.” Less than half of Saint Louis Ballet’s annual revenue comes from ticket sales. To make its productions possible each season, the nonprofit relies on the support of the community. Its largest annual fundraiser is its gala. For 2024, the event is themed Happily Ever After in honor of the ballet’s production of The Sleeping Beauty, which guests will get an exciting opportunity to experience. “We have hosted the gala for the last 12 years, and this is the first time we are presenting it with a full-scale performance, complete with live accompaniment by the Springfield Symphony Orchestra,” Horiuchi says. “All gala guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful matinee, and immediately after, there will be a dinner reception right there at Touhill Performing Arts Center.” A highlight of this year’s event will be the presentation of the 2024 Reverence Award to Patricia and Dr. Leo Whiteside. Saint Louis Ballet board president Tom Voss and his wife, Carol, are co-chairs for the Happily Ever After Gala. A long-time supporter of the ballet, Voss was introduced to the company through his involvement with Dance St. Louis. “I had the opportunity to see Saint Louis Ballet perform several times, and each performance just kept getting more impressive,” he notes. “With Dance St. Louis, we would often bring in companies from out of town, but here was a group of dancers that lived and worked in St. Louis. To truly be a great center of the arts, it’s critical that we support the ballet and the important role it plays in our community.” As well as supporting productions, the gala also facilitates Saint Louis Ballet’s outreach program, Pointe to Succeed. The initiative partners with Title 1 Schools to provide free tickets and transportation to ballet performances, offering access to enriching cultural experiences that may otherwise not be possible. Pointe to Succeed also allows classrooms to engage with the performing arts virtually by offering study guides and online streams of Saint Louis Ballet productions. Last year alone, nearly 12,000 students were exposed to the wonder and discipline of ballet through the program. “Saint Louis Ballet is continually raising the bar,” Voss notes. “Last spring, for the first time, the company introduced a full live orchestra for Horiuchi’s production of Swan Lake, and the dancers and performances just keep getting better and better. If you haven’t come out and supported the ballet recently, now is the time.” &

Obviously, the big games and big moments—the Brett Hull 500, the Mark McGwire home run rally, the Super Bowls—were amazing, but I think it was the day-to-day interactions with the players. It can be a grind, but I really liked getting to know them on a more personal level. WHAT IS THE MOST FUN THING YOU HAVE DONE SINCE RE TIREMENT ? As my retirement gift to myself, I traveled to Finland with my sister. It was the cleanest air I’ ve ever breathed, the most beautiful water I’ ve ever seen, the most gracious people I’ ve ever come across—and it was all covered with snow. I loved ever y minute of it . DID YOU MAKE A BUCKE T LIST WHILE YOU WERE UP IN THE WEE HOURS OF THE MORNING GE T TING RE ADY FOR YOUR MORNING SHOW? My bucket list was to find something to keep me busy. I run my voice-over narration business from my home studio. I absolutely love it because I can do it on my time—and in my jammies. And then I launched a podcast . Real original, I know, but when you’re on T V, you’re limited to three minutes or less to talk to people. I wanted to do deeper dives. WHAT IS ONE FA SHION TREND THAT DIDN’ T WORK FOR YOU? I’ ve always liked the look of a tailored jacket . One day I bought a pew ter leather blazer, which I thought was so cool. I wore it once on T V and sat under those lights. I looked like a baked potato. ONE ME AL TO DIE FOR. It has to be my mother ’s fried chicken. She was an incredible cook . She fed seven kids ever y night , so she learned how to do a really good job. WHAT IS NE X T FOR RANDI? I want to get killer guests for the podcast . I was thrilled to pieces when Bob Costas agreed to come on with me. I just spoke with Alan Hunter who was one of the original MT V VJs. I want to get Jake from State Farm on the air with me. Adam Wainwright said he’d come on and so did Don Lemon. WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CAREER, WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE? Say yes to ever y thing until someone gives you a reason to say no. I’ ve mentored a lot of young journalists who get offers for radio, but they think they should turn it down because they want to do T V. Do the radio gig. It ’s experience, it pads your resume, and it will get you in more doors.

EVERY YEAR BRINGS SOMETHING NEW —or something old—to the interior design scene. As you get ready to embark on any project, it’s always good to know what trends are on the “outs” and embrace some new concepts. In this way, your home will retain its new, fresh feeling much longer into the future. Here are some of the 2024 trends that I think will take hold.
Clean lines with an unexpected bold element anchor are emblematic of Bold Minimalism—a newly invented term that I love.
Stenciled flooring is an oldie but goodie that is making its way back on the scene. Bouclé, a nubby, soft fabric reminiscent of stuffed animals, is making its way onto furniture.
Brown hues in paints, woods and fabrics will be on the scene in 2024. Moroccan Zellige tile is showing up everywhere. It is a handmade and natural feeling ceramic tile that often has an iridescent finish.
This kitchen represents many new elements: Gray counters, Zellige tile and mixed paint and wood cabinetry.
Fun is also in favor for 2024! Add a pop of your favorite bold color here and there just to make yourself smile.
According to experts, moody hues will be taking over baths, kitchens and interiors in general. With the resurgence of wallpaper comes large wall murals—this one in a kitchen is particularly striking.

We purchased a home in Old Naples in 2020. Friends would visit us and fall in love with the area and want to buy property in Naples, as well. I made the decision to officially help my friends purchase their dream home in Naples! And I love it! What is so special about Naples? Mary Noel: I love everything about it! The weather, the beach, 5th Avenue, pickleball, golf, boating and spending time with St. Louis friends and meeting new friends. Dan: There are two ways to enjoy Naples, both by land and by sea. I have a boat that I use to tour clients around and for recreation. Naples is such a great place to boat to lunch or go to Keewaydin or Marco Islands. Is it easy to play golf in Naples? Dan: There are 110 courses within a 15 mile radius of Naples and only 16 of the courses are public. This makes living in a golf course community desirable for many. What is the pickleball scene like? Mary Noel: Both private and public pickleball is everywhere, but I love playing at East Naples Community Park. There are 64 courts and it is home to the U.S. Open Pickleball Championship. You can join or pay daily and play pick-up games almost any time day or night.
How is the dining scene? Mary Noel: Both 5th Ave South and 3rd Street are loaded with some of the best restaurants in the country. A couple of my favorites: Molto, Continental, Tulia, The Dock and the new Le Colonial. Dan: I love some of the restaurants a little further North. The Mercato has an outdoor lifestyle center with a lot of great dining spots. My favorite waterfront restaurants are The Bay House and The Turtle House, which is reopening very soon. What is your typical mode of transportation in Naples? Dan: One of the best ways to explore all the beauty and charm of Naples is to bike. There are many trails like the Greenway and riding through Old Naples or down Gulf Shore Boulevard is a great way to see the beautiful homes and gardens. Mary Noel: My favorite is by golf cart. If you live in a golf course community, you can drive anywhere within the community, but if you plan to drive it out of the complex or on city streets, it has to be street legal and meet certain requirements.
THE REAL ESTATE MARKET IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA Mary Noel & Dan: There are so many ways to enjoy the Naples area at a variety of price points and lifestyles. Living in a golf course community, a high rise on the beach or a villa or house in a neighborhood are just some of the options. In the Naples area, inventory is up 46% over last year. The number of closed sales is down 16%. The average days on market is up to 59 days, and the median sales
price is $631,000, up 10% from last year. With the increase in inventory and decrease in interest rates, it is the perfect time to buy! Dan lives in the Naples area full time, and Mary Noel lives in St. Louis and spends a lot time in Naples. We feel it is a great partnership because we can meet clients in St. Louis or Naples at anytime. We are both committed to providing excellent customer service, whether buying or selling a home.
