EARTH DAY COMES BUT ONCE A YEAR By Drew Aquilina

Here we are at Earth Day, the one-day each year dedicated to saving our planet. The Day technically hasn’t reached official holiday status yet, but I do like its chances. Earth Day has been noteworthy for the last 41 years and it has some of the hallmarks of an official holiday. For one thing, Earth Day is celebrated on the same day every year, April 22nd. Earth Month is even acknowledged each April. This is a key ingredient for achieving National Holiday status putting in on par with other celebrated holidays that are observed on the same day every year, i.e, Fourth of July, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. This kind of recognition promotes the organization necessary to plan events around the same day every year. Beyond the fact that it is anticipated and reoccurring, Earth Day has one quality that all the other holidays don’t have. Everyone on the planet can relate to it. It doesn’t matter what country you’re from or what language you speak, everyone recognized the Environment and nature. That common connection launches Earth Day to heights other holidays can only dream of - the first official world holiday. Regardless of whether Earth Day is officially recognized worldwide, there is no dispute in the fact that this observance has become important to all of us. As we rely more heavily on computers, Internet and smart phones, more people are finding themselves focused on technology rather than on the world around them. Technology does have its advantages, as it is a useful tool for organizing and learning. Technology, however, is having a negative effect on the way we live and how we relate to our environment. Instead of spending quality time outside, many of us are inside play games, emailing or focused on a variety of small hand held devices. !

TOTSTOTEENSMAGAZINE.COM!

31

This is where Earth Day comes to the rescue. The saturation of environmental news and events occurring annually the entire month of April is making a difference. Earth Day is putting the Environment front and center. Schools have been leading the efforts to highlight the importance of the environment and our role as stewards of planet. Media outlets such as Tots To Teens Magazine sponsor and support activities articles such as this one that gives an environmental Cartoonist and nature enthusiast the opportunity to bring perspective to this special day. All these efforts are working towards helping people keep their eyes on the environmental ball. More people than not know what Earth Day is and what it means and the celebrations and protections and observances have started to take on a life of its own around the world.

!

Now that we’ve discussed the how, when and why about Earth Day, what do the concepts of alleged global warming and carbon footprints have to do with this observance? These two talking point concepts attempt to provide a quantitative assessment of how humans affect our environment and how we use the resources with which our planet provides us. In certain respects, the discussion invites people to participate on a personal level in reducing emissions in crowded cities and reducing the waste we produce. Both of these activities are admirable and when carried out by more and more people, will start to have more of a positive effect on the environment. I believe, however, if you have a personal interest in learning about Nature and enjoy something about Nature, you are more inclined to want to do something to protect Nature. So on Earth Day, we shouldn’t just focus on what actions are undertaken to possibly harm the planet. Instead, the focus should be on our place in the environment and how beautiful and wonderful Nature is. It is only at that point when we appreciate Nature that our subsequent actions to protect it will come naturally and effectively.

Try to take 15-30 minutes and visit a natural space - a park, some woods or a wetland - a spot not too far from where you live. During your visit, sit still for 15 minutes and observe what happenings around you. Not only will the outdoors come alive around you, but that 15 minutes may become a half-hour and soon you may realize that your mind is clear and you are part of something bigger than you ever imagined.

Enjoy Earth Day 2012! International award-winning cartoonist and author Drew Aquilina has been entertaining audiences since 1987. A Connecticut native, Aquilina created the cartoon strip Green Pieces which has run as a daily and weekly comic feature since 1994. Aquilina is also the principle of Site Design, LLC Landscape Architecture in Scottsdale. Aquilina continues to produce a daily strip at gocomics.com while drawing the sequel to his www.greenpiecescartoons.com greenpiecescartoons.com and www.GoComics.com first cartoon compilation, Green Pieces: Green From the Pond Up .

It is not hard to turn on the television to hear news of a slumping economy. It is enough it seems to keep anyone from traveling these days particularly internationally. However, that is not the case! Despite recession worries, travel trend watchers say, “Americans aren't giving up their vacation plans just simply being more cost conscious.” Spring break vacations are fast approaching followed shortly by summer vacations so the last minute planning has begun. All the reason why traveling on a budget is all about making the most of what and whom you know. Here are some key things to remember when planning your next trip:

Travel Off-Season. Every destination has a season that is considered a “value season”. This means lower prices and lessened crowds. January and September are great months to find great travel rates. Rome in August, for example, many restaurants and galleries are closed, but hotel rates are often slashed. But there are sights you don’t have to go inside to enjoy such as the Trevi Fountain this is more than enough to keep you occupied for a few days. Book Early. Plan ahead and take advantage of early booking savings. Often times these deals are even better than last minute deals. Ask your travel planner for a payment plan. For airfare, if your travel is less than two weeks out, drive!

TOTSTOTEENSMAGAZINE.COM!

46

For Airfare be Flexible. Traveling on Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive with the highest demand, so if you can try Thursday or Monday. Monday morning flights are often drastically less expensive. Book a Travel Package. Very often you can save money by booking package deals that include the airfare, hotel, meals, car rental etc. See the tip above though! Use Public Transportation. Many cities worldwide offer reliable and affordable bus lines serving resort areas. Public and private ferries and water taxis also can be a fun and reasonably priced way to get around. Quality of service and safety vary widely from city to city, so be sure to research before jumping on the local jitney. Don't Overlook The Visitor Centers if you are Traveling by Major Highways. These places often have brochures with great ideas such as; places to visit and books that contain hotel discounts. Some bigger tourist places such as Orlando offer coupon dispensers that sit along the roadside. Often you can request information online as well. Check Local Papers. Also ask the locals if they know of any free or low-cost entertainment opportunities. Often, there are free park concerts, church concerts, etc., that only the locals or the local newspapers know about. Be Creative with the Planned Activities. Plan a picnic lunch, hike along a bubbling stream, fly kites on a windy day, or skip rocks across the mountain lake. Seek the Free Advice and Services of a Seasoned Travel Agent. Avoid the mega online travel seller with deals that appear to be too good to be true. Seek travel experts that not only provide invaluable and personalized service, but can often times get unadvertised deals. It is also nice to be able to talk to the same person when you have a question. So plan ahead, seek advice and travel! Don’t let the economy or bad news take the place of truly enjoying time together with your friends and family. Whether it is a long weekend at the lake or a cruise to Caribbean, relax and enjoy the escape from reality. It is amazing what being away from the cell phone, television, email, and work can do to regenerate the soul! Happy travels!

Funny Kid Quotes by Amy Senter

"#$!%&'(&)*!+&&'!,-(.!+(/0&'(*!12)3-'!"(4-'+2'!-'!52)(!62)(.*!7&89+! When I taught second grade, there were times where I had to turn my back to a student to keep ! from laughing. Pretending to look for a marker or pen always seemed to be a believable excuse. Here are a few of my favorite moments. One morning, I asked my students to write about a topic on the board. One student had written, “HOW AM I A POSED TO NO?” A substitute teacher assigned my students to write me notes about how much they loved me. After smiling at each letter, I came across one that read, “I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING.” I told my students to write a down a problem they had already solved. A student wrote, “I had a problem when I had 7 dogs and 1 died, 1 got stolen and 5 ran away. I solved it by not getting any more dog until 2 months.” I overheard this conversation between a boy and a girl during recess: -Have you accepted Jesus into your heart? -Uh, no? -Well you need to. You know where you go if you don’t. -Where? -To H-E-L-L. -Hey, that’s a bad word! -No it’s not, it’s just a place. The bad one is like if you say, “What the…?” One day, I joked that I thought my breath was stinky. One of my students shouted, “YOUR BREATH DOESN’T STINK, BUT MY MOM’S DOES. SHE SMOKES A LOT!” Two students were fighting so I told them to write down how to fix the problem. One paper read, “I will choose to be nice. Don’t call each other names. Don’t call each other a peanut head. Don’t say you mama is wunting to exit but she was to fat.”

7 tips for an organized kids room If you have kids, you know that the first thing that comes along with them is a mess. Sometimes no matter what you do, the mess is always there. We have asked professional organizer Allison Flinn of reclaimnc.com Reclaim Professional Organizing how she helps clients organize the most troublesome spot; the kids bedroom or playroom and here is her top 7 tips for a tidy sleep & play area: 1. Use bins and baskets as a way to corral toys while still have the space looking neat. 2. Have shelves with bins and baskets at accessible to children so they can participate in the cleanup process. 3. Sort and label baskets and bins so children get in the habit of putting things where they belong. If they are young, take pictures of the items that belong in a particular basket or label with an illustration. 4. Create zones for each activity, such as an art table for crafts and a dress up area for costumes. 5. Children constantly outgrow toys and clothing. Every three months purge clothing that no longer fits, as well as toys your children no longer play with. There are always charities in need of these items. 6. If you child is over the age of 4 involve them in the purging process and explain to them that the toys they no longer play with will be donated to kids that don't have any toys. 7. Remove any bulky, non-functional furniture from the room; kids like to play on the floor.! Allison Flinn is a professional organizer and founder of reclaim. Based in Raleigh, North reclaimnc.com Carolina, Allison works with clients throughout the Southeast. Allison’s education includes a marketing degree from Radford University; she is also a board member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and the Institute for Challenging Disorganization (ICD). She also teaches a continuing education course at Wake Technical Community College on how to start a career as a professional organizer.

If you have a little girl 4-7 years old you probably have watched an Olivia episode or two. The cute charismatic pig is sassy, and makes a great party theme for your Olivia Lover. We threw an Olivia Party using a local community center, handmade goods from Etsy, and creativity—all on a budget. When planning a party see what your local community center has to offer. The party packages offered at community centers keep kids busy with party fun. We picked a play dough party, where children make their own play dough as well as decorate their own cupcake. The children had fun making play dough, icing cupcakes, dancing and playing party games.

!

!

! !

The children enjoyed turkey {no ham here}, broccoli mac-n-cheese mini pies made using the Bella individual pie maker and fruit skewers. Making your own party food cuts down on cost. Displaying food can be affordable too using pretty silver dishes found at the party stores or dollar stores. We used dollar store silver serving plate and a crystal candlestick holder to create a sophisticated cake stand. !

Celebrating a Vintage Easter

!

TOTSTOTEENSMAGAZINE.COM!

58

I envisioned a casual vintage Easter Egg Hunt party filled with textures of stone, metal, and delicate lace. Rather than bright colors, I opted for muted tones of yellow, green, and blue. The rustic fencing provided the perfect backdrop for the party setting. !

The children's place settings were accented with bird’s nests. Rather than using large blooms, I choose baby's breath for an airy and old-world feel. They looked especially beautiful as the wind blew during the shoot. A tiered metal fountain was used to display delicately decorated Easter Eggs and ivory blooms.

TOTSTOTEENSMAGAZINE.COM!

59

The focal point of the dessert tablescape was the 3-tiered cake featuring large pale yellow blooms set against a backdrop of satin and lace ribbons. Trios of Peeps sat among beds of parsley. Pink lemonade served in mason jars, green tea ice cream balls, meringues, and birds nest cupcakes were a few of the other treats offered. To thank guests for coming, small birdhouses with tags that read "Happy Spring," complete the simple yet festive look.

Planning Your Own Mommy & Me Mother's Day Playdate Mother's Day!!! A day when all of us moms are celebrated for all we do all year long! Well, in my house, my family LOVES to do special things for me on Mother's Day‌.Me? My idea of Mother's Day equals a DAY OFF! However, when you have small kids, they make you cards in school and get all excited about spending the day with you. So, my daydreams of soaking in a hot tub, sipping on hot tea at the spa are PROBABLY NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! AND‌if you're like me and are so busy with work, one day totally dedicated to spending time with your kids one-on-one actually sounds PRETTY GOOD! So, this is where the concept of "Mommy & Me Playdate" came from. Imagine you inviting your daughter to "hang out" with you for the day doing girly things. I can just see the HUGE smile that will be on her face! Start the day off with a invitation placed on her pillow when she wakes up inviting her your special day. Get dressed up and head out into the backyard decorated with a vibrant, summery color palette of orange, hot pink and yellow with splashes of gold to play up the summer, fun, festive girlie vibe. Hand in hand, you and your daughter walk out into the backyard transformed into a girly oasis! A lunch of your favorite and your daughter's favorite will be served (by hubby) and eaten at this fabulous table set for two! To add to the whimsy feel, I created "Tutu Chairs" for mom and daughter's chairs only. And watch your daughter's face light up when she notices that she will be allowed to drink from a grownup wine glass! (Filled with her favorite juice of course!) Once lunch is done, it's time to head off to the "Girly Bars"! First stop, the Smoothie Bar! Blend away your favorite fruit smoothies and then take them over to the Nail Bar to enjoy while you and your daughter take turns painting each other's nails. Last stop, the Scrapbook Bar where you will have a variety of photos ready of the two of you that you will create scrapbook pages to begin a Mommy & Me scrapbook. Have plenty of stickers, scissors, papers and ribbons available to make this super fun!

To end the day on the sweetest note, visit the Sweets Bar full of yummy girly treats including mini-cupcakes, iced cookies and my signature "Cupcake Parfaits" this time using meringue topped snowballs. All budget-friendly and store-bought. The finale is a special gift presentation to your daughter thanking her for being your daughter and making it so AWESOME to be her mom! This was such fun to setup! My daughters were at school during the photo shoot and I purposely left everything up when they returned from school. I must say, that the look and squeals from them when they walked out into the backyard was PRICELESS! My heart warmed and I knew right away that this is the way I wanted to spend Mother's Day with my girls this year. Spa day? You'll have to wait….Mommyhood calls! Graduation is often a time of reflection when photo albums and yearbooks from the past are reminisced over while dreams of what the future holds are ever present. The magical Polaroid photographs of yesteryear inspired our graduation party design and the slides you'd see projected on the white wall of your grandparents' basement! As soon as the calendar flipped to June when I was growing up, it meant every weekend would be jammed packed with graduation open houses. We'd head out right before the lunch hour and return late in the evening with a little too much sun on our faces and way too much food in our bellies! Most of the open houses included full-course meals and, being a gracious guest, I always made sure I ate a bit of something. Keeping this in mind, I created a buffet focused on one main food item—Sliders. Simplifying the menu allowed me to have fun with the buffet and not overwhelm the guests with too many food choices. It also reduces the stress level of the hostess by allowing her to plan and prep ahead versus making a huge variety of dishes. The backdrop for the buffet table was created using silver square paper plates attached to a piece of foam board. A Polaroid inspired banner was hung on ribbon using small binder clips from an office supply store. The backdrop was finished off with a graduation tassel inspired bunting in school colors.

TOTSTOTEENSMAGAZINE.COM!

66

The buffet included a SLIDE-rs Bar filled with toppings and condiments for guests to create their very own “custom” burger. As a hostess, I always want to please everyone and “create-yourown” bars are a great way to achieve this. Guests can pick and choose what they like without the worry falling on you! The toppings and condiments were clearly labeled with photograph and slide inspired cards. It's always a nice touch to let your guests know what they are eating with either food labels or a menu at the beginning of the buffet. To round out the buffet, “Healthy Fries”--aka carrot and celery sticks—were served in school colored fry boxes with “Class of 2012” tags. Veggie Dip was served in taster cups. Portioning food and dips is an easy way for guests to fill their plates quickly and keeps the line moving when you are serving a large guest list.

TOTSTOTEENSMAGAZINE.COM!

67

I always leave plenty of room on my buffets for guests to set their plates down. If they need to take the lid off of a warmer, they will need two hands and this is especially important around beverage dispensers. Watching a guest juggling a plate and cup while trying to turn on the spout of the dispenser is good for a laugh but cleaning up after they spill isn't quite as fun! The “Picture Yourself Punch” dispenser was topped with a mortarboard and clear cups were embellished with tags. The tags were printed on full-sheet labels, cut out using a 2” circle punch and attached to the cups. Food was served on serving ware that was either square or had square compartments. The squares continued the Polaroid and slide theme throughout party space. A single shape, color scheme or object can create a cohesive and seamless event.

TOTSTOTEENSMAGAZINE.COM!

68

The sweet treats table was backed with white square paper plates accented with school colored tassel bunting. Photographs of the graduate growing up created a “Sweet Memories” photo banner to finish off the backdrop. The desserts continued the square slide theme and were embellished with letter cookies for a graphic twist. Yearbook favor boxes and “Class of 2012” confetti completed the table décor. The Yearbook favor boxes were a fun way to say, “Thanks for the Memories” and were filled with the graduate's favorite treat.

TOTSTOTEENSMAGAZINE.COM!

69

Guests were asked to sign a non-traditional guest book, which can be framed or placed in a scrapbook. The yearbook inspired 8” x 10” cards had photos of the graduate and their school attached to them to personalize the pages. Here are some of my favorite party tips and tricks for keeping any size event on budget: ! Simplify your menu. “Create-your-own” bars allow you to focus on one food item while allowing your guests to have their “favorite” food. ! Serve finger foods or portioned servings. Usually these don't require silverware, which can be an additional expense. ! Plan ahead. Finalize your menu so you can stock up on items you need when they go on sale. ! Use small plates. A guest will feel satisfied when they have filled their plate versus having lots of empty space, which makes them feel like they haven't taken enough. ! Serve punch instead of soda pop. Punch not only saves you money but it saves space. A beverage dispenser takes up less space than a bucket full of drinks, which you have to keep refilling with soda and ice. I hope you're inspired to create an affordable and extraordinary celebration for your graduate!

Happy Father’s Day

Plan Your Own Sugar Daddy Father’s Day Party Doesn’t Daddy deserve a little party every once in a while? When I was brainstorming Father’s Day party ideas recently, I thought of basing a theme around Sugar Daddy candies! Sugar Daddies are a retro candy that has been around for years and years, so even older dads can appreciate this party! Sugar Daddies are caramel candy suckers and their packaging is iconic. Working with the wonderful Piggy Bank Parties, I asked them to design a printable banner, food cards, and drink wraps for me, based upon the Sugar Daddy wrapper. They did not disappoint! These adorable printables are perfect! I kept it simple on the display, having only a cake and some coffee. What dad wouldn’t love that? The caramel cake is from my local grocery store and I dressed it up by adding some Sugar Daddies around the edge of the icing. Then, I topped it with a few wrapped suckers. To make my own cake stand, I simply used a yellow plastic bucket that I bought at the dollar store. I removed the labels from the coffee drinks and replaced them with the cute printable labels from Piggy Bank Parties. To give them a little extra something, I wrapped the necks of the bottles with red yarn. Then, I skewered some red candy heart gumdrops and put the skewer through the red yarn, to hold in place. The red candy hearts pick up on the red heart detail in the banner on the backdrop. For the backdrop, I used the banner, and also some starbursts that I made using some Sugar Daddy candies. I used a small circular cardboard cake board and painted it yellow. Then, I hot glued the candies around it. To give it a finished look, I made a paper rosette for the middle and topped it with a yellow heart. Hope this inspires you to throw your Sugar Daddy a little party for Father’s Day! -Brittany Schwaigert Styling and Design: GreyGrey Designs: greygreydesigns.com greygreydesigns.com Printables: Piggy Bank Parties: piggybankparties.com piggybankparties.com ! !
