REMEMBERING ROSIE, A LIFE OF SERVICE Your kind donations supported Rosie’s dignity. When Rosie’s health went quickly downhill in 2021, it was only fitting that in her final months she was shown the care, compassion, and welcoming environment she had always displayed to others, and at Tōtara Hospice we feel privileged to have been a part of that journey. Rosie’s life was centred around what she could do for others. She was a retired nurse and counsellor, married to retired GP Dr. Jack Fraser; together they ran a solo practice in Pakuranga serving their local community. In retirement, a love for cooking, bringing people together, and pet rescue continued to give her purpose. Her daughter, Vivienne, recalls the bespoke dining table in her parents’ large home, designed long enough to fit 12 people around, creating a home undeniably full of love, joy, and great food! Rosie had a raft of health complications, and more recently had radiation therapy for a lung tumour. Rosie’s compounding illnesses and underlying leukaemia began having an impact on her overall wellbeing. Amidst last year’s COVID-19 lockdown, the family recognised their mother was taking a turn for the worse, contacted the GP, and Rosie was admitted to hospital. Before her most recent hospital admission, Vivienne had a feeling that it may be the last, so made sure that her three siblings and their children had a brief chance to connect, as Level 4 lockdown

restrictions created a lot of uncertainty. While Rosie was in Middlemore Hospital, Vivienne and her family tried to understand the complex level of care Rosie would require when discharged, and what their options were. Vivienne rang Tōtara Hospice to understand the criteria, before setting up video calls with specialists, who all agreed that Rosie wouldn’t survive more treatment, and that Hospice would be able to ensure she was well-supported and cared for in her end-of-life journey. Vivienne shared that “At first the word ‘hospice’ absolutely scared me. Until a friend was admitted last year, I’d never experienced Hospice. I thought it would be really depressing, but all the warm-hearted staff, relaxation spaces, and beautiful garden pathways, just had a total feeling of serenity.” When the decision was made to transfer Rosie over, Vivienne and her father were invited as guests to also stay. “The lovely staff just thought it might only be a matter of hours that Mum had, so they made the call that Dad and I could safely stay with her. I felt really privileged to be there, and to support Dad as well,” Vivienne said. When Rosie arrived at Hospice, she really clicked with the nurses (having been one herself), telling many stories about her life. One nurse shared with Vivienne how

Rosie felt comfortable enough she could talk about anything with the nurses and ‘there was nothing sacred’. “The staff at Hospice have high emotional intelligence, and are in the perfect job and at the right place. You can tell by how genuinely caring everyone is,” shared Vivienne. For Vivienne and her father, Hospice took over that ‘carer’ role, and were able to provide Rosie with everything she needed in her final days. Once she could no longer eat, she was instead provided with liquids and ice blocks, they would swab her mouth with moisture, and apply lip balms. She was given the utmost care, consideration and comfort, as were Vivienne and her father, being supported as special guests. “Dad enjoyed the social elements, talking to the other patients and guests. Also we were given counselling, and the spiritual care support person visited us too. Dad and I had access to every single bit of support you might need,” Vivienne said. Hospice allows patients to live their final days with honour and dignity. Rosie appreciated the large focus on personal hygiene, with the nurses making a huge effort to get her to the bathroom, keep her fresh and indulge Rosie in her favourite perfume; they even wore it too, as Rosie insisted! “Mum just wanted to maintain her

dignity right until the end. I really appreciate how special mum’s final days at Tōtara Hospice really were.” Since Rosie’s passing, Vivienne and her family have had contact from a Hospice counsellor, and intend to maintain a long-standing relationship, including donations of cucumbers for events, as she and her husband Arie are in the business of growing them in Pukekohe. “We’re so grateful. For us, it was right that she was in Hospice rather than at home;

we just would not have been able to cope, keep her pain-free, or just give that 24/7 attention. It was a godsend, really.” Thank you Vivienne for sharing your story.

A DIFFERENCE MAKER Sally shares her passion to give back.

There are many reasons people volunteer: for some it’s the connections, the desire to give back, or even as a new interest or hobby. Sally Barclay has been an amazing volunteer at Tōtara Hospice for well over 10 years now, and her reason for volunteering is – all of the above! Sally has lived an incredible life; rich with interests, a career, and family – someone with a lot to offer, share, and give. She was one of New Zealand’s first computer programmers, and then went on to become a teacher after having a family – teaching the younger generation science, mathematics and computing for 40 years. “It’s about getting to know who they are, and what experiences they have as a person. I’ve written about some interesting elderly gentlemen in their 90s; they just loved talking about their past, and I don’t think they’d told those tales. Sometimes a family member would be there and say, ‘gosh, we never heard that tale’, so it was lovely to hear the families’ reactions,” Sally says.

Now with her three children all ‘well and truly’ past-needing her care, and grandchildren in university, Sally found herself with time to do things she enjoyed, and wanted to donate that time to good causes and discovering new interests. Sally has volunteered in a multitude of roles and organisations over the years, but created a special connection with Tōtara Hospice after the passing of her husband, and credits Hospice and the counselling support provided, as really giving her the ability to, again, give back.

Sally knew she enjoyed this kind of work, having put together a historical book about where she grew up, so she had experience in writing and interviewing people to tell their stories. Sally describes needing to be able to: think on your feet, draw a story out of someone, and have a genuine interest in other people’s lives. In her time here, she has put together 20 – 30 biographies.

“My husband died of cancer, and Hospice were very good at caring for him and then also supporting me. After Jim had died, I went for the counselling service, and it was absolutely excellent, and from then on I could cope. It was probably because of that counselling that I felt I could give back,” Sally explains.

When the retail shops put out a desperate call for more volunteers, there was no biography work at the time, so Sally thought ‘that’s something I can do’, and for Sally it’s proven to be a really satisfying role. Sally explains there are two parts to working in the retail shops: the customer service side – helping customers and cash register work, or for those who want a quieter role, there is a huge job that

With a genuine interest in recording people’s lives, stories, and achievements, Sally began volunteering as a biographer. This is offered free to patients as an optional service, and some take it up so they have a record of their life to share with family and friends.

needs to be done sorting and pricing all of the wonderful donations. At Tōtara Hospice, we want people to know our shops are about making it easy to find ‘just the good stuff’, so this behind-the-scenes role is very important, and one that Sally really enjoys doing! “What we are doing out there is putting stickers on the bargain bin stuff, hanging clothes up on coat hangers, and putting labels on clothes. I volunteer around three to four hours a week doing that. If these jobs don’t get done nothing would make it out the front. It’s nice to see families come in and get an armful of clothes for $15-20; now they have a family that’s warmly clothed,” Sally says. The thing Sally loves about working in the retail store is being given a task, the satisfaction of being able to tick it off and complete it, and see the direct outcome of what she’s achieved – customers walking away with things they need and great finds, and the money going back to Tōtara Hospice. “Hospice is just something that I know should be here. Anybody can work in retail. And Hospice won’t be there unless people support it, and giving time if you have it, is what you can do. Financially, I can’t offer a lot, but time, I can.””

Yes, this year is our 40th birthday. We are so proud to have been providing holistic palliative care and support to those with a terminal illness and their loved ones/whānau across south and southeast Auckland for four decades, and we certainly aim to be continuing to do so for four decades more. We feel privileged to have shared some of life’s journey with so many. We are continually humbled by the good will, support and can-do attitude of our community sponsors, donors, partners and our amazing crew of 500 volunteers. Over 40 years, we have grown, matured, adapted and formed a real sense of belonging and identity across our community and the wider health sector. We have come a very long way from our humble beginnings of a phone and some cars, a small house and committed volunteers. We are a sector leader in palliative care, a $12 million-dollar organisation with 100 staff and 500 volunteers. We have progressed from supporting a handful of patients, to providing 40,000 care and support interventions a year.
