Chaïm Starveling, Snout, and Snug

Editorial

Rachel Donnelly Colin Harmon Thibault Peigne David Wall

What is this? The story of 3FE is the story of a man who found himself so beguiled by coffee that he abandoned a lucrative career in finance to devote all his time, energy, and enthusiasm to it. For the unititated, such a level of fanaticism for something as superficially banal and basic as a hot drink is likely mystifying. However, it is often the case that a thing which appears simple from the outside can yield a multiplicity of subtleties when probed. To the devotee, whatever the object of their devotion, these minutiae are endlessly fascinating. Starveling, Snout, and Snug is interested in the density of detail housed in the minds of such aficionados. Each issue will feature a portrait of an individual and their passion, drawn with words and photos. These portraits try to get a little bit inside the world of the person, to gain something of the richness of insight that is the fruit of persistent and long-term application to a single calling. The publication features words from others too, thoughts on related topics by people who live and breathe their livelihood. The aim is to create something eminently readable, enticing both in form and content, and compelling even through the background bustle of a lunchtime café.

Issue#1 · December 2013

Words Rachel Donnelly Photography Al Higgins ‘The very top of the hill. Are you at the very top of the hill? You’ll see a wind turbine on your right and a locked gate, with a Fred Flintstone post box, and beyond a bumpy road. Take that road. And close the gate after you, if you don’t mind.’ The land around falls from a peak, draped over the hump of an exposed hill. The wind is fierce up here, powering the small wind turbine that sits as a lone sentinel at the entrance to the property. The downward swoop of the drive discloses a barnshaped building. We park up and Chaïm emerges. His grin is wide, his gait shambling. He greets us warmly. Like the warmth of our host, the rounded edges of the wooden, granite-clad barn are a locus of sympathy in a brutal environment. Wood is omnipresent on the property. A stand of mature scots pine sits behind the house and staked saplings (cyprus, willow, ash, maple, birch, hazel rowan) punctuate the garden. continued overleaf »
