Head Coach Mark Prosser

Mark Prosser joins the Brevard College Coaching Staff in the fall of 2011, coming to the Tornados from Wofford College, where he was involved in all aspects of coaching, including scouting, prep recruiting and film breakdown.

In the 2010-2011 season, the Terriers repeated as Southern Conference Champions and reached the NCAA Tournament. The team was first in the SoCon in assists and also first in assist/turnover margin on the way to a 21-13 record. Wofford also was eighth in the nation in three-point percentage and twelfth in overall field goal percentage.

During his first season back in Spartanburg in 2008, the Terriers set a school record with twelve Southern Conference wins. In addition, the team posted the first winning overall record since moving to NCAA Division I. In the 2009-2010 season, Prosser helped Wofford reach a school-record 26 wins along with the Southern Conference Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Working primarily with the guards, Wofford was second in the conference in turnover margin and assist/turnover ratio, plus ranked third in steals. At Bucknell, the team averaged twenty wins a season over the five years Prosser was on the coaching staff of Pat Flannery. In the 2004-05 season, the Bison reached the NCAA Tournament after going 23-10 and winning the Patriot League title. In the tournament, Bucknell defeated Kansas in the first round. In 2005-06, the Bison went undefeated in Patriot League play, the first team to do so in conference history. The team was ranked in the top 25 for the first time in school history and featured Patriot League Player of the Year Charles Lee. For the NCAA Tournament, the Bison were seeded 9th and defeated Arkansas in the first round. In the second round they were defeated by Memphis to end the season at 27-5, the best record in school history. For the 2002-03 season, he served as an assistant coach for the Terriers in Mike Young’s first season as head coach. During that season, Wofford posted a 14-15 overall record, including a 79-77 win at Virginia Tech. In the Southern Conference, the Terriers were 8-8 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. Prosser graduated from Marist College in 2002. He saw action as a reserve forward at Marist before a knee injury ended his playing career. He also worked with the program as a student assistant coach. Prosser earned Street and Smith honorable mention All-America honors at Lawrenceville Prep. He averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game during his senior season, earning USA Today All-State honors. A native of Wheeling, West Virginia, Prosser is the son of the late Skip Prosser, who was head men’s basketball coach at Wake Forest and Xavier. He and his wife Emily were married in June 2009 and reside in Brevard. They are the proud parents of their daughter, Ava Grayce.

Donald Hudson Assistant Coach

Brevard, 2011 * First year at Brevard (1st year coaching) Hudson joins the Tornados men’s basketball coaching staff in the fall of 2011, after a storied career with the BC Football and Basketball teams. Hudson, a two-sport athlete who was a member of the original Brevard College football team which was reinstated in 2006, joined the Tornados basketball team in the 2009-2010 season as a guard. He was on the floor during the Tornados 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Championship run, hitting a pair of clutch free throws to cement his place in Brevard history as the Tornados defeated the Catawba College Indians for the first conference championship in Brevard history since joining the Conference in 2008. Hudson spent the first month of his coaching career working through a coaching change transition and he was responsible for getting the team through their first month of conditioning in preparation for the season. Hudson played in 33 games with the Tornados over a span of two seasons, seeing time at both the guard positions and was a natural leader on the floor before graduating from Brevard College in May of 2011.

2011-2012 Season Preview A new era dawns at Brevard College as the Tornados welcome new Head Coach Mark Prosser to the sidelines in Boshamer Gymnasium. The Tornados face the tall task of replacing two-time All-Conference guard Josh Roper as well as the 2011 SAC’s leading rebounder Josh Jordan, but with the return of Gaither Hendrix, Drew Schauss, Jermichael Tanner and Darius Moose, Brevard will look to continue their recent stretch of success as they look to return to the postseason for the third consecutive season. Prosser begins his first year with the Tornados, Coach Prosser answers questions about the coming to Brevard after a standout career on the upcoming season during the Tornado Tipoff sidelines at NCAA Division I Wofford College and Bucknell University, and returns seven players, including three starters from last year’s 13-14 squad that finished tied for fourth overall in the SAC standings in making it to the 2011 Food Lion SAC tournament. The Tornados will have a good base to work on as Hendrix became the third BC men’s basketball player to be selected to the SAC Preseason All-Conference First Team, joining BC alums Jonathan Whitson and Roper as Tornados selections to the team. Hendrix is the Tornados leading returning scorer after a standout first season with Brevard, averaging 14.9 points per game, while connecting on 33.1 percent of his three-point attempts. The 6-1 point guard has the penetrating ability to get into the lane, while the vision to spot the open man on the break and all of his weapons will need to be utilized to the full force this season. Schauss and Moose are expected to contribute right away as well as Schauss continues to display his expanding all-around game on the court as he added crashing the boards to his ability to score from all over the court as he finished third on the team with 4.9 rebounds per game, while hitting on a career high 45.3 percent of his field goal attempts. Moose, fresh of a campaign which saw him named to the 2011 All-SAC Freshman team, also returns after hitting 53.3 percent of his field goal attempts, averaging 5.1 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game, and will look to continue to develop his skills as he battles down low in the conference this season.

Jermichael Tanner returns looking to man the point for the Tornados in the 2011-2012 season

Also returning for the Tornados this season are senior Jermichael Tanner, as well as redshirt

2011-2012 Season Preview

sophomore Dominique Pickett and redshirt freshman Chavis Hamilton.

Tanner, the hero of the Tornados SAC Championship run two years ago, returns for his final campaign and will see time at the point guard position for Brevard. One of the faster players on the court in every game this season, Tanner’s drive and ability to slice into the lane will provide BC with several fast break opportunities and the 5-9 athlete was third on the team in steals last season.

Pickett comes back after limited action last Gaither Hendrix leads the team as a season and will challenge for playing time with 2011 Preseason All-SAC First Team selection Hamilton who redshirted his first year at Brevard after a successful career at McDowell High School where he was a three-time Team MVP. Eight new players join the Tornados this season as Gerel Simmons, Hunter Morrison, Taylor Warren, Aleksandar Vasiljevic, Filip Gujanicic, Jonathan Hopper and David Worth all will wear the blue, black and white this season for the Tornados. Simmons, Morrison, Warren and Hopper will all line up in the backcourt for the Tornados, while Vasiljevic, Gujanicic and Worth will challenge for playing time in the BC front court. Simmons was captain of the 4A State Basketball State team and played in the Maryland State All-Star game, capping off a career at North Point High School in Accokeek, Md., while Warren comes from East Davidson High School. Morrison and Hopper also hail from the state of North Carolina with Morrison from Concord, N.C. and South Rowan High School, while Hopper comes from Waynesville, N.C. and Tuscola High School. Vasiljevic and Gujanicic come to Brevard by way of Belgrade, Serbia and their 6-7 and 6-8 frames will help fill out the paint for the Tornados, while Worth will look to adjust to the pounding of the collegiate game as the 6-9 Midland, N.C. native will attempt to help the Tornados win the battle of the boards. Brevard opens up the 2011-2012 regular season as they take part in the annual Peach Belt/South Atlantic Conference Challenge in Dahlonega, Ga. taking on North Georgia on November 11th.

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

South Atlantic Conference

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

Rock Hill, S.C. – Lincoln Memorial, ranked fifth in the preseason NABC/ NCAA Division II national poll, has been tabbed by the SAC men’s basketball coaches to win the conference title in 2011-12, it was announced on Wednesday. After winning the regular-season and SAC Tournament championships a year ago, LMU returns three preseason All-Conference selections, including first-team pick and reigning SAC Player of the Year Desmond Johnson. Just behind LMU in the coaches poll is Wingate, which after going 19-10 overall and 12-6 in the league a year ago, returns two first team All-SAC picks in Odell Turner and Jaime Vaught, both of whom averaged doubledigit scoring in 2010-11. 2010-2011 Season in Review One year after arguably the most successful season in modern BC men’s basketball program history, the Tornados capped off the 2010-2011 season by returning to the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament. Though Brevard lost in the quarterfinal round the Tornados battled through the up and down season to finish tied for fourth overall in the SAC regular season standings and boasted their second straight season with a player achieving a program milestone as Josh Roper eclipsed the 1,000 point mark in his Brevard College career. Roper, for his play during the season, was recognized to the 2011 All-SAC team as a First Team selection, and was named to three different Jermichael Tanner pushes the tempo All-Region teams after leading the South Atlantic of the offense in conference action at home Conference in scoring (21.2 ppg) and steals (2.67 spg). Josh Jordan also had a standout senior campaign, finishing as the SAC’s leading rebounder for the 2010-2011 season, averaging 8.9 rebounds per game as the Tornados finished the year with a 13-14 overall record, 8-10 in SAC competition. The Tornados opened up the season with a pair of spectacular venues as they traveled to the University of Tennessee for an exhibition game, before opening up the regular season in Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. against Belmont Abbey College. Brevard remained on the road for their first three contests, winning their first game of the season on the road in Banner Elk, N.C. against Lees-McRae as Brevard opened up a 26 point lead against the Bobcats before holding off LMC after a furious comeback. The Tornados continued their winning ways in the next contest as they handed Anderson University, a 2011 NCAA Elite Eight guest, a 85-84 loss in Anderson, S.C. Roper scored 30 points in the contest to lead Brevard, but it was his passing ability that sparked the win as he found Travis Jackson open under the basket with seconds left and the freshman placed the ball in the net to clinch the victory.

Brevard would continue play by downing North Greenville University, 99-83, and Tusculum College 77-72, before falling in their first game in the new year to Carson-Newman in Boshamer Gymnasium, 96-89. The Tornados would bounce back from the loss to record three straight conference wins as they toppled Mars Hill College, Catawba College and LenoirRhyne University in succession.

The victory over Lenoir-Rhyne was Brevard’s first overtime victory of the season as Roper led the Tornados with 31 points against the Bears, while Jordan picked up his first career double-double, scoring 12 points while pulling down 11 rebounds in the 85-83 victory. the buzzer to put the Tornados at 7-3 early in the season.

The Tornados would drop their next five games though, falling to undefeated Lincoln Memorial University among others, before stopping the skid on the road at Belk Arena in Due West, S.C. against Erskine College in another overtime thriller, reminiscent of last year’s triple overtime victory against the Flying Fleet. Jordan powered Brevard to victory in the game with his second double-double of the season, scoring three of his game high 19 points in the opening minutes of the overtime period to give the Tornados a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in the 54-50 win.

Roper eclipsed the 1,000 point career mark on the season on February 5th against Tusculum College in front of the home fans at Boshamer Gymnasium, but the Tornados were unable to overcome the Pioneers. The Tornados sandwiched wins over Catawba, Mars Hill and Young Harris College around a defeat to Mars Hill before heading into their rematch with NABC ranked #5 Lincoln Memorial University. Brevard celebrated Coach Michael Jones’ birthday as Vincent Dombrowski drilled the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:55 left in the second half and Roper added 28 points, including five three-pointers, while Gaither Hendrix scored 17 as the Tornados handed the Railsplitters their first defeat in the 2010-2011 season. Brevard would top Lenoir-Rhyne on the road, 65-56, before returning home to defeat Young Harris and complete the season sweep, 88-69. After a loss to Newberry on the road, the Tornados returned home to celebrate Senior Day and recognize the accomplishments Donald Hudson, Whitney Galloway, Jordan and Roper all achieved during their time with the program. The Tornados fell to Wingate University in the season finale, but due to the tiebreakers in effect, the two teams would meet again in the Quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference tournament. The Tornados gave the Bulldogs a good battle in Cuddy Arena as Roper and Hendrix combined to score 38 points, but Wingate was able to pull away late in the first half on their way to ending Brevard’s season. Roper finishes up his career with 1,190 points and finishes in the top 10 in several career categories, while Jordan sits among the rebounding leaders and Hudson and Galloway provided leadership for the Tornados during their time with the program. Brevard’s four seniors will be missed, but the Tornados return a deep nucleus in Hendrix, Drew Schauss and Jermichael Tanner as Brevard will look to return once again to the postseason.

The BC Experience Beyond the Classroom

Life outside the classroom. College is about getting an education…but that doesn’t mean learning only happens in the classroom. At Brevard College we take your education seriously and that is why we believe in your holistic development—that is, helping facilitate your growth as responsible and effective individuals while living in a socially cohesive campus community.

A Campus For Students… Life on the Brevard College campus is centered on the student experience in and out of the classroom. From the moment you arrive on campus, you become part of a dynamic community where there are more than 30 active student organizations and clubs, a Campus Activities Board (CAB) that offers over 100 programs and events a year, and there are multiple offerings in intramurals, outdoor recreation, and student leadership opportunities.

…By Students Everything that happens in the student culture on campus is driven by student leadership that you can easily be a part of joining. Whether you want to be involved in student government (SGA), athletics, chorale ensembles, or just take on a position as a resident advisor (RA), there is an opportunity for you to grow as a person, as a paraprofessional, and ultimately as a professional member of the campus culture and leadership team on campus.

Step In. Stand Out.

5 Fast Facts: • All student clubs, organizations, and offices in Campus Life are run by students, just like you! • Students are recognized for their individuality, but also in how they work with other students in group dynamics. • Majors are for degrees; experiences are for life—we will help you develop and grow both in and out of the classroom • There are clubs and organizations and leadership opportunities for everyone— you want it, we got it. If we don’t, we will create it! • Leadership begins with you. If you step in, you will stand out.

Once you step into the campus culture, you are already predestined to develop and grow your personal leadership skills. At BC, we will get to know you, welcome you into the cohesive family of learners, and help you develop your potential to do whatever it is you want to do while enrolled at Brevard College. This experience is what you want to make it and it’s all about you as an individual within the context of a community of other students who want to form friendships, team relationships, and lifelong bonds with you. You can’t help but stay involved and feel attached to BC once you get involved. Brevard College • Brevard, NC • 1.800.527.9090 • admissions@brevard.edu • www.brevard.edu

This is Brevard College Campus Life at Brevard College The Division of Campus Life is committed to the personal development and growth of each student at Brevard College. We will get to know you and help you get what you want out of this collegiate experience. Through our many offerings and services, you will find an informative, resourceful division that is here to serve you!

Personal Development and Wellness It all begins with you as an individual. We recognize that you come to College from a certain place, background, with certain characteristics that make you unique. We don’t want to change any of that, but we want you to be the “best you” that you can be. Along the way, we recognize that there are times when students struggle with college and we have offices and services that are here to assist you individually. Whether it’s through our Wellness Center in Stamey, our housing office with your roommate, suitemates, or room assignments, or whether it’s in helping assist you through our Campus Security operation, we have 24/7 coverage that is available in any time of need.

Community Development But we don’t want you to stay individuals forever. Part of being in college and developing into the responsible citizen that you will be is to live in a community with others and learn from each other and grow socially, physically, emotionally, and more. Thus, we have offices centered on engaging you in activities and events in various interest areas. Additionally, we have programming centered on multicultural awareness, service initiatives, intramurals, outdoor recreation, and more.

Other Unique BC Programs And if all of this wasn’t enough—we offer alternative fall and spring break trips to help raise awareness to social justice issues while providing service to local communities of interest. We also provide opportunities for students to study abroad, be a part of a living-learning community like our Institute for Women in Leadership (IWIL), or take part in our Voice of the Rivers (VOR) program where students work with faculty on a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river. At BC, we have so much to offer you in your educational and social pursuits and these are just a few examples of the types of experiences you could be enjoying. So what are you waiting for? Be prepared to step in and stand out in a community developed for students, by students. All that’s missing is…YOU!

Athletics A new era of Brevard College Athletics began in 2008 as the Tornados became full active members of the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. In the three years since, every BC Athletic team has either recorded a South Atlantic Conference win or has received a berth to the postseason South Atlantic Conference tournament. The men’s basketball team won Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Championship in 2010, and was the first BC program to participate in the NCAA Regional tournament. The Cycling team has won back-to-back Fall Mountain Bike Team National Championships along with several individual national titles. Brevard has also seen multiple athletes and coaches receive both All-Conference, All-Region and National recognition as the Tornados look to continue their success both in the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference.
