THE BELVIN ANGUS & GUESTS FEMALE SALE

Welcome to the 2023 Belvin Angus Female Sale. The two years that have passed since our last female sale have turned into an exciting time in the cattle industry. Cattle have been selling extremely well all through 2023, as several factors have finally turned the market in favour of the primary producer. This enthusiasm has been tempered by the drought situation and feed shortages that persist in some large areas, but a fair worth of commercial cattle has still been rewarding to see.

The heifers on offer in this sale are a cross section of what our operation is about. The emphasis on strong cow families, whether they have been 45 years in the making, or just recently added, is apparent in the group of sale heifers. We focus on raising bulls that go work on some of the largest ranches, in the toughest conditions, Western Canada has to offer. Our customers want bulls that will sire high performing, heavy steers, yet leave behind a set of daughters that are as problem free and low maintenance as possible. This is something we try to balance out when selecting bulls to use, keeping performance without sacrificing cowherd efficiency. We believe that reflects in the heifers on offer. Our

cowherd is never fed grain. The cows are run on banked grass well into December to try and maximize as many grazing days as we can, something that is of extra importance with feed costs what they currently are. The heifers in this sale have been bred to reflect that, and we are excited what they have to offer. The service sires featured are just as exciting, as they show a glimpse into where our program is going.

We are once again happy to welcome our good friends, the Bohrson Family of Anchorage Farms, to be a part of this sale. With a similar eye for cattle, we feel the Anchorage heifers are a nice compliment to what we have in the sale. They all go back to the lineup of top end donor cows that Scott and family have assembled from across North America.

Thank you to all the people who have supported our last two female sales, we truly appreciate it. With an early fall, we hope that weaning and field work is wrapping up, and as many people as possible can join us at our sale facility on October 27th. The cattle will be on display all day, with the sale at 5 pm and a steak dinner to follow. If you can’t make the sale, feel free to contact any of the consignors or sale staff, or bid online through DLMS.

Belvin Kokanee 2022 is a bull we retained this spring for use in our own herd. If the most important part of a bull is his mother, then 2022 rises to the top for that alone. His dam, Georgina 14’14, is a cornerstone in our herd and one of the standout producers we’ve ever had. 14’14 is a female who has the ability to produce heavy, high performing sons, yet her daughters are built just like her, as angular and feminine as you can find. The two heifers leading off this sale exemplify that. With SAV Blackcap May 4136 and Elbanna of Conanga 1209 behind Atlantis, the maternal side of 2022’s pedigree is huge. Phenotypically, 2022 is a free moving, big nutted, big boned, heavy muscled, massive made bull. He’s a bull that has had the presence of a herd bull since he was a baby. We used him heavily on cows this spring and are excited to see his impact, just as we are very thrilled to offer choice of his two full sisters to lead off this sale.

C Square B Atlantis

Square B Atlantis 8060 features a maternally packed pedigree, with two of the breeds great cows, SAV Blackcap May 4136 and Elbanna of Conanga 1209 up close in his pedigree. Atlantis sons were very well received in our 2023 bull sale, while his daughters featured in this sale are beautifully made, feminine females.

D Belvin May City 0136

Exposed April 15 to June 2 to Heiken Trademark 1018, and June 3 to Aug 13 to Shaw Caldwell 11432. Preg checked 80 days on Aug 13 (approx. May 20 breeding date). A sale feature, Andria 124’22 is a daughter of May City, the high seller from our 2021 fall sale. May City calves have gotten positive reviews from some leading operations in the country, and his 2023 calf crop is at the top end of both our bull and heifer calves. 124’22 is a member of our most prolific Argentine bred cow family, coming from the great Cabana Tres Marias. The maternal grandam and great grandam of 124’22 are both donors in our operation. 124’22 traces back to the same Zorzal daughter as the feature lot 3 heifer in this sale. The combination of May City and the maternal backing of Zorzal makes for a very exciting cross.

Bred March 27 to Heiken Trademark 1018 (Safe). Exposed April 15 to June 2 to Heiken Trademark 1018, and June 3 to Aug 13 to Shaw Caldwell 11432.

The lead off Brooking Roll Call 9045 daughter, Lady Blossom 38’22 is a powerhouse female who still maintains a level of femininity to go along with her body mass.

The dam of 38’22 is a direct daughter of SAV Pioneer 7301, and a full sibling to Lady Blossom 205’12, one of our most prevalent donors over the last decade. Roll Call is a son of the great Brooking Beauty 333, one of the all-time greats in the Brooking program. You can see her influence in the body type of the Roll Call daughters. Early service to Trademark should leave a calf with as much rib and middle as you can find.

Lady Blossom 14’09, the maternal great grandam of 59’22, is also the mother of Belvin Panic Switch 2’11. Baldridge Mercenary D002 SERVICE SIRE FOR LOT 24

Bred March 25 to Baldridge Mercenary D002 (Safe). Exposed April 15 to June 2 to Heiken Trademark 1018, and June 3 to Aug 13 to Shaw Caldwell 11432.

Lady 94’22 features performance numbers at the top of the breed in Canada. You can see these numbers transmit in her powerful body type. Her pedigree is different on the bottom side featuring the Merit Cast Iron 5094C bull and a cow going back to the productive Ring Creek cow herd. 94’22 carries rare service to the now deceased Baldridge Mercenary D002. Mercenary was our go to calving ease sire for years, who has thousands of direct offspring born, both purebred and commercial, across Western Canada.

Ruth 12’22 is a long bodied, high performing Major daughter whose dam was a choice lot in our 2021 female sale. The maternal grandam of 12’22, purchased from J Square S Angus, is a favorite cow around the ranch and a likely member of our donor program in the near future. Lady Blossom 230’22 is another long bodied Major daughter. She is a natural daughter of Lady Blossom 42’17, who was selected by Bova AI of Ireland and Coul Angus of Scotland as the High Selling female in the 2018 Angus Collection Sale. She has been a main donor for their programs across the Atlantic, and has matured into a picture-perfect female. The service to Keremeos will leave a calf with front end cows on the top and bottom of its pedigree.

Erica 195’22 is the lone Baldridge Discovery D121 daughter in the sale this year. Discovery sons have been highly sought after for years in our sale with their body shape and muscle. His daughters are beautiful uddered, attractive made cows. 195’22 is out of a maintenance free cow who produced until 13 years of age and had perfect feet until the end. After calving out one group of Trademark sired calves we are very excited about his future.

Belvin Georgina 45’15 is one of the best Panic Switch daughters we’ve had, which says a lot given how productive they’ve been for us. Year after year she has front end sons in the bull sale. 45’15 only has one daughter to date, Lady Blossom 121’17, but she is exceptional. 121’17 is the dam of Belvin May City 0136, and herself was a $40,000 pick of the herd selection by KT Ranches last year. 45’15 comes from one of the best branches of the Georgina cow family in our herd, with numerous cows of note in her pedigree.

The first mating to Basin Jameson 1076 is very exciting and offers likely the first chance to acquire his influence in Canada. Jameson was the $600,000 record setter for Basin Angus in 2022. Jameson offers an incredible combination of performance and carcass merit, being in the top 1% of the breed for WW, YW, CW, Marb and REA. With the Basin Lucy and Basin Joy cow families, along with the Rainmaker sire line, there is still strong maternal backing in his pedigree.

The second mating is to the tried and proven Musgrave 316 Exclusive, one of the best sons of the great LD Capitalist 316. Exclusive is well known for siring eye appealing cattle with muscle and mass, while offering solid calving ease, performance and carcass merit. While also being backed by the famed Musgrave cowherd.

Our preference has always been to flush cows once they’ve proven themselves, and Belvin Lady Blossom 23’12 came to donor cow status with years of top end production. She herself is as soft made and deep ribbed as you can find, the type of low maintenance cow we love. A full sister to 23’12 was Reserve Champion Female at the Mexican National Show in 2019 in Aguascalientes, Mexico. She has been a foundation female for our friends at Angus El Sauz. The mating with Musgrave 316 Exclusive should be an excellent cross of phenotypic standouts.

The last chance to ever attain HF Miss Blackcap 58F embryos from our arsenal and she has been a great producing donor. The result of our pick from Hamilton’s heifer calf pen a few years ago was this Cowboy Up daughter we selected with KT Ranches and we know you will be hard pressed to find a female as stout and powerful in her muscle pattern, bold sprung in her rib cage and still extended and attractive through her front 1/3 like 58F is. She’s ideal in her udder, with a clean tidy look and we think the matings to the $270,000 (1/4 interest) Glacier 041 bull will be a complementing mating to a very impressive Angus cow that has the look and phenotype we strive to duplicate.

One of our favourite bulls to ever come out of Peak Dot is Newfound 83H and behind every great bull is an outstanding dam. Peak Dot Mia 247C is the ideal donor and one that needs to be invested in with confidence as she is extremely fertile and can raise big time progeny. The Unanimous cattle flat out produce and 247C is among the very best donors at Peak Dot. He was extremely stout, hairy, big hipped, good looking, strong footed and he would’ve got many of those qualities from his dam. The sire of the embryos, Revival is legit high quality and one of the best in the business with phenotype, EPD’s and an outcross pedigree that is stacked with highly maternal pedigrees. This is a truly cool mating!

We committed to our friends at Belvin to sell our best in this sale and the decision was made to sell every single ET heifer calf that was born at our cooperator herd — nothing held back! 2415 is a true sale feature in our Anchorage offering. This standout female lines up a stacked pedigree and awesome body type that screams big time producer. She is an easy doing, huge ribbed, stout made, heavy muscled and good looking individual with so much shear power in an ideal frame size. Her pedigree is stacked with the $60,000 Rendezvous (Renovation x the World Champion Annie K 9165) and the awesome 58F cornerstone donor that was our pick of the herd from Hamilton Farms 2018 calf crop. Stacked pedigree and a phenotype we feel is ideal combined with a strong, balanced set of EPD’s makes this one a special breeding piece…the early service to sexed female Unbelievable is the icing on the cake.

Miss Blackcap 58F DAM OF LOT 35

Bred AI on April 5 (Safe) to Covey Hill Unbelievable 4J (sexed female)

Extremely complete female here that offers so much quality in terms of phenotype, genotype and epd’s in a well rounded package that is hard to fault. Firstly, she is a full sib to the $63,000 valuation Six Mile Showtime 80H that sold to Everblack Angus. Her sire needs no introduction as he continually is one of the hottest bulls in the breed for Hamilton Farms & Six Mile and her donor dam, 263C is a big time producer and beautiful donor. 2413’s EPD’S are impressive and in the top 25% for CE, top 15% for BW, top 10% for WW, top 9% for YW and well in the top 1/3 of the breed for RADG, DOC, CLAW, ANGLE, CW, REA, FAT & MILK. When you combine that with a high quality heifer carrying the early service to Unbelievable and carrying a heifer calf to boot, her ROI will be fast and profitable.

Bred AI on April 5 to LFE Best Answer 800H. Exposed to Brooking Radville 2208 from April 20 to May 30. One of our favourite donors at Brooking Angus Ranch is the great Brooking Beauty 8062 who is awesome in her type and stacked with pedigree. 2408 is going to be an awesome looking mature cow and we are positive the udder quality combined with her elevated and feminine front end, long and level hip, huge rib and sound structure will have longevity and productivity built in. To be upfront, she is bred up early but we do have a conflict in our preg checking list. We have a May 9 preg check of “open” and a June 20 preg check of “80 days”… go figure - they don’t correlate. Either way, we knew it was best to be upfront off the bat, we have confidence in either Best Answer or Radville when she calves in January 2024.

Their dam, Peak Dot 247C is a big time production female and raised on our BMS teams favourite bull to sell in the 2021 Bull Sale season, the $35,000 Peak Dot Newfound 83H. Their sire, the $250,000 Bloodline is quickly becoming a go to sire to add frame, power and body depth of body while not sacrificing maternal quality as his females are long, elevated and attractive frothed with the performance to raise your next great herd bull. We have always been fond of this mating that these 2 full sisters carry and we truly know they’ll make exceptional breeding pieces. They got bred up early to Best Answer and we feel that is the perfect combination for profitability.

Her daughters have all been retained by Peak Dot and are some of the most cherished females on their ranch. When we flushed the 551B donor at our facility, we always commended her for her shear muscle, stoutness, rib and overall power in a feminine design. As 2403 matures like her dam, you’ll be in good shape with a female that you can build around.

Bred AI on April 5 (Safe) to Woodhill Revival H028

As a sale manager, we always use the phrase “if it hurts to sell them, than you know you’re selling the right ones” and you do it to promote your program, let me tell you, these eight sale heifers hurt to sell. 2418 stems from a donor that we purchased from Peak Dot Ranch and has done nothing but impress us. We had the opportunity to buy into a few Peak Dot donors years back and had the pick of their donors to do so and 239A rose to the top for her phenotype and impressive pedigree. 2418 reminds us of 239A with her feminine design and structural correctness with ample amount of power. We truly think the mating to Woodhill Revival H028 (who is owned by Belvin Angus & Canadian Sires) is very valuable as he is one of the most unique and impressive bulls in the industry and we are excited for his future!
