TOPPICK SOUL TALK

I am

LIMITLESS Don’t put limitations on yourself because of your experiences. Who you are right now is someone you have never been before. You have no idea what exactly you are truly capable of manifesting & creating. We have evolved, we have grown, and we have seen a beautiful life in time. Progress comes from when you make a choice to move forward for yourself. Only WE can change our lives! We believe that limitations are things we say we are afraid of because of fear. One thing we need to remember is that we create our own limitations. I have been feeling free lately. I am not worried about what people think of me. If I say certain things or if I live a certain lifestyle or dress up in a certain way, I don’t have to worry. I came to a realization a few weeks ago that I had a fear of being trapped, and at my subconscious level, I wanted to be free. I was affected for some time, by my close friend's remarks or criticism about how my life should be. It was certainly hurting me deep inside, and I did not like the idea of me being trapped in those thoughts.

we are always evolving as this planet earth has evolved in so many years. Time is constantly moving and changing. Life is giving us opportunities in every step we are taking. It is about getting rid of the limitations that we put on ourselves by not getting attached to any one aspect of what it is that we do. Who we are is not made up a various list of things we have done, continue to do, or plan to do. Who we are, is the divine expression of choosing to have these experiences. We are not all of those things that we think we are or the labels that we put on ourselves.

At one point in time, I thought if I become popular people will like me, So, I started putting myself in the spotlight. I was looking for validations from people that I was “good enough”. I thought other people’s approval brought me happiness. I never realized how I was trapping myself in my own box. I forgot that no one can make me happy except myself.

Things that keep me moving:

That’s when I decided that it was time to move on. I began to see how much I was limiting myself. In fact, the self-definitions that we hold is our biggest limitation. If we think we are trapped, we will feel that way. If we believe in the power to be anything that starts with “I Am limitless”, we break all the limitations.

2. Quit having expectations from people or situations.

JULY + AUGUST

We are the whole universe in ourselves. We are vast awareness of knowledge in ourselves, we just have to tap it in. 4. Quit having expectations to outcomes.

The first step is to become aware of. We have expectations when we are working hard towards our goal. We get attached to a feeling that we are working hard, and we should get success no matter what. Rather, visualize Once that we start to believe in the power yourself of becoming successful and start of manifesting, we will feel free and we will taking steps to make it happen. We may see failure during this process, or we may be able to act in ways and do things we achieve success on our first attempt, previously thought we could not. that’s where we have to be mindful. There Manifestation is bringing your dreams, is a big horizon in front of us. Go and your vision, your passion into reality. explore!!! Whatever you want, you think and feel and as per the law of attraction, 5. We are free manifestation occurs.

1. We are limitless If we stop putting my ourselves in boxes and let go of all the “I Am this” to “ I Am limitless”, our life will change. We are the whole universe in ourselves. Let’s get started in exploring it.

We can’t change other people’s perceptions of us. People are going to do or think about what they have to; we can’t change them. Be contented with them and love what it is, or let them go. Quit fighting the never-ending battle of wishing I am the person who always believes that things were different. We have a lot of we need to evolve, and we cannot be expectations from people, from ourselves. stuck in our own life experiences, be it Let’s get real with the way things are good or bad. We are not the same person instead of how we want them to be. every day,

26

3. Quit questioning yourself.

Now that we are free right here at this moment. Feel free to do what we want or desire. Free to choose to be present and aware, completely open or closed. 6. Start Manifesting Start paying attention to what is going on in our lives. If we focus on our patterns and where we have to correct ourselves, we can do great things. Do pay attention to what’s going right or what’s going wrong. The first step is to use the law of attraction and think positive. “Be a magnet of what you desire” and the universe will work for you. No matter what situation you are right now you have to see the bigger picture. Remember your true divine path.

TOPPICK ELITE MAGNETS Dallas Yoga Fest, a holistic health yoga festival was held in Dallas on June 15th, 2019. It was all about getting inspired to lead and celebrate a healthy lifestyle. This event was held at reckson Middle School, Allen Tx. All ages (5+) and levels (beginner to master) were invited to join for yoga, meditation, pranayam, lectures & workshops, and health fair all for well-being. And we got a chance to talk to Swami Mukundananda ji, who is the spiritual role model of millions of people around the globe and also founder of Jagadguru kripalu ji Yog, popularly called as JK Yog which is a nonprofit organization. Swami ji graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi with a degree of Engineering, a dream college for everyone and received a post graduate degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata. Swami ji graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi with a degree of Engineering, a dream college for everyone and received a post graduate degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata. He left a career in business to join Sanyaas and decided to dedicate his time to devotional pursuits. Under the guidance of Shree Kripali Ji Maharaj he studied Vedic Scriptures, Indian and Western Philosophy and Bhakti Yog and he has been spreading the fragrance of his knowledge all around the globe.

SWAMI MUKUNDANANDA IN COVERSATION WITH NEETU RISHI ON

INTERNATIONAL

YOGA DAY

Q - It’s not at all easy to live a life of being a Swami Ji, what made you start this journey. I know it’s been long when you stepped into this world, but what ignited the spark? A - It is said that the call of God is the strongest call in our life and by the blessings of my Guru and Radha Krishna I was fortunate enough to experience that deep yearning when I was in college. By virtue of the knowledge that I had received, God became no. one priority in my life. And there is nothing more satisfying then to align our work, our efforts with our values. So I decided that rather than serving any corporate house, I would prefer to serve the supreme divine personality.

Q-We all know that yoga is the medicine to all the problems in life but we are somehow still not able to add it in our lifestyles. On the occasion of International Yoda day, you are conducting an event Dallas Yoga Fest, one of its kind, our viewers are keen to know about that? A-Since the United nations declared International day of yoga, we wanted to create awareness of the spirit of yoga, and this festival has been growing bigger and bigger until now the council general of India announced that this is biggest yoga celebration in the country. So the idea is that people should come and learn about yoga, holistic wellness and pickup something that will benefit them in their own life.

Q - Radha Krishna Temple is the serene abode of Shree Radha Krishna, but you have nurtured it to become one platform not only for meditation but various aspects of learning. How did you come up with this idea? A- The Indian Community in USA is so far moved from their culture. They are living in an Alien culture and I wanted that the nucleus of the community should lie in their own roots. So they should have a place where they can congregate it which nourishes their own values, the culture in which they have grown up and where they can receive all the needs that are necessary for enriching themselves in their own personality and the community as well. So we always try and ensure that this becomes one place for children for classes or the youth for yoga or health seminars.

Q-There is also a special session of yours and the Bollywood actress Sanya Malhotra, the fame of movie like “Dangal”and “Badhai ho” we are excited to know about that? A-As a part of the Dallas yoga fest we have this spirit of yoga session where we would like everybody to get excited about celebrating yoga and Sania Malhotra is the right person for this because of her love for yoga and holistic lifestyle and we will together share the tips on healthy lifestyle and we hope that people will enjoy this session very much.

Q-The temple is putting tremendous efforts in supporting homeless children, how can people contribute to that cause? A-We have launched an initiative called Little Hands Big Hearts project. Anybody with a big heart can participate in this. Things that are no longer needed by people are donated. We have collection points to gather the used commodities by the people and whatever is collected, we distribute it through the HOPE initiative, which is sent through 45 channels to the homeless. People who want to contribute can connect and help.

Q-What message would you like to give to our viewers? A-Yoga is something that everybody can participate in. There is so much on the mat and so much off the mat. So whether you are young or you are old, I am sure there is something for you there. We are going to have a huge fair where experts from all over the country will be there, we will also have people from wellness industry. There will be numerous stalls for you to go around, take a look, there will be various kinds of therapies and you will get an experience that you will love. Spirit of Philanthropy

Mrs. Amruta Fadnavis, a social activist, a trained singer, actively lending her support to women empowerment and charities active in welfare, healthcare, and research! It was a pleasure interviewing this kind spirited soul. Her love for family, passion for singing and urge for social welfare was evident in every conversation we had during her Dallas visit.

Amruta Fadnavis banker, singer and social activist

THE FIRST LADY OF MAHARASHTRA

Rashmi : The ailment research you supported through AAPI charity event is in line with the upcoming issue of TopPick media. Can you shed more light on why these issues need more attention? Amruta : I am so happy to be here in USA to promote this cause taken up by AAPI. I think it is very important in today's date to look into these serious diseases like leukemia, lymphoma and cardiovascular diseases. These are growing lifestyle diseases and majority of patients and families who can't afford good treatment can be helped by such charity causes.. Second, increasing the research activities on these diseases to help in later contingencies where people can nd a complete cure is very important. Proud to perform at Jai Ho! Concert organized by AAPI to raise funds for research, awareness, and cure of these serious diseases for the needy. It is an example for all of us to follow, how an organization can come together and make a huge difference.

Rashmi : What would be your advice on how to prioritize health and tness in life? Amruta : Health should be a priority because when health is lost everything is lost! One can bring back the money, but cannot bring back one's health....and character..of course!

16 2

JULY + AUGUST

Rashmi : Another cause on your agenda is 'Woman Empowerment'. You are a VP in Axis Bank , a social activist, and is also connected to a very popular political gure in Maharashtra. You must be coming across various issues affecting women, what is your assessment on where does it need more efforts to make it a better place for women and which area would you like to highlight? Amruta : I must say that women are venturing into various elds but the top corporate positions occupied by women are very few. In India, the women entrepreneurship in start-ups is only 10%. This percentage should increase. India is rolling out more women conducive policies. The maternity leaves are increased, Startup India is engaging in multiple activities to support early-stage women startups. There is a POSH law to govern the security against the harassment of women in the corporate setting. Also, there are various nancial schemes and special cells for women. All these things go a long way, but nally, it is our mindset. We need to think that woman is equal to man and she can perform equally. Plus the woman also has to have that conviction in her, which comes through a family, her upbringing and her education.

perform and showcase their talent. We have been grooming them for over 6 months now. The ones who were not selected for the nal rounds are being trained to keep a positive mindset and we shall groom them more so they can try and prepare for a next chance. The few talented children are not cut for a 9-5 job, they deserve to be an artist! We have made all the arrangements at the NSCI dome, and extend an invitation for you to attend!

Rashmi Sathe In Conversation With Amruta Fadnavis

Rashmi : We often see NRIs here are bonded with their roots and help the population in rural areas in India. Any specic rural India project you wish to bring to their attention for help? Amruta : I must say as you rightly said, that NRIs really help out a lot in India. India resides in their hearts and that is a matter of pride for us. I thank AAPI here, who sent aid to help soldiers in Pulwama terrorist attack. They are also engaged in the Ayushman Bharat initiative, helping with startups including the Indian Equity market. Maharashtra is the only state where the investment by NRIs exceeds Rs.1000 crore. In the equity market, it is currently Rs. 8500 crores. NRIs show strong support and that really increases our condence. Healthcare would be the priority cause to focus on where NRIs can help with their expertise by consulting on video calls, training the resources of Ananga Vadi to handle the malnutrition cases better and much more. Secondly, it would be education! We can come together to upgrade various schools in rural areas. Another focus is the village development, by adopting a village of 5001500 people to transform into a Model Village which would include sanitation, education, vocational training, etc. These things would really help because the maximum population of India resides in the villages. Rashmi : What is Mitti Ke Sitare? Amruta : This is my ongoing initiative. Divyaj Foundation, in association with Mpower aims at discovering hidden talent from the slum areas of Mumbai and honing their musical skills to showcase their talent to the global audience. Divyaj is partnering with Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (1187 schools) to identify children who are blessed with talent but lack resources to improve themselves. The Shankar Mahadevan Academy (SMA), of the critically acclaimed musician Shankar Mahadevan, is also collaborating for Mitti Ke Sitare to provide musical training to these children. Their nal performance is scheduled on June 22nd in Mumbai, where International and national artists will support them through their special performances. It will be a great platform for kids to JULY + AUGUST

Rashmi : Any charity work on the International front that you are engaged with? Amruta : I have been part of a few peace missions on the International level. A Prayer Breakfast in USA and also a peace mission with China. I think I would like to see more work and contribution in handling global warming and environmental change issues on an international level. I have been co-ordinating with International artists through Mitti Ke Sitare to support another cause on my agenda, Women Empowerment, as well. I think it can make a great difference if we all work together. Rashmi : Any message for NRIs? Amruta : I would thank NRIs for their contribution. They make us proud. The NRIs expertise in a variety of streams has helped bring India into a positive light. They have a 'Give Back to Community' attitude in their hearts. I request them to keep it up! Every bit of help done by an individual or through an organization will make a big difference to the people who need it. Mrs. Amruta Fadnavis is beauty and brilliance teamed with a passion to make a positive impact in the world. She was born in an upper-middle-class family that gave an equal priority to education, sports and art. Her father is Dr. Sharad Ranade (Ophthalmologist) and her mother is Dr. Charulata Ranade (Gynecologist). Mrs. Fadnavis urges everyone to focus on health as a priority. Stay t!

YES!!!! That’s me :) Young, handsome, goofy,Abhimanyu introduced himself to Toppick with great smile during his interview at the South Asian Film Festival Dallas. Abhimanyu played the role of a boy named “Surya” who is born with a rare condition called congenital insensitivity to pain. A medical disorder that does not make him feel the pain when gets hurt. The movie got chosen for Dallas SAFF 2019,This film has already pocketed the people’s choice award at international film festival directed by Vasan Bala. Toppick had an opportunity to meet Abhimanyu and get to know him more during the festival.

Q : Congratulations on the success of your debut film. Being a star child did you always want to be an actor? Thank you. Having a degree in finance, I was drawn to and interested more in business. But later I realized my passion and interest towards acting and continue to pursue my career of acting. I gained my first experience as an assistant director before my performance in the film. Q : What was your parents reaction when you told them about your career change? Is your mom your role model? I am very grateful and proud of my parents. I do not really believe in any role modeling. But principles does matter to me. I have been pretty much an independent person since I was 16.Even though my parents were not very thrilled to hear about my decision in the beginning, but supported completely. With the goal set in my mind it is an achievement for me.

Q : How did you feel to be the winner and recipient of “Best Debut Award” at Macao international film festival? It was a “WOW” . Yes, I won this award for my performance. It felt amazing.I was not expecting it and all of a sudden when I heard the announcement I was so thrilled and speechless. It is a great feeling of accomplishment. Q : I believe you have performed all the fight scenes including martial arts one, by yourself. How hard did you have to train for that? Oh yes! I did perform those. It was my toughest challenging commitment for the movie. I actually had to isolate myself for three months from everything. My friends, social media, my family and the outside world. Got trained for martial arts and practiced. Got hurt many times. I injured my ankle, leg and arm, but made it all the way. I takes lot more perseverance and patience. I was confident that I could do it. Q : You studied human anatomy for the movie? Was it needed? :) I did it for myself. I always liked biology and its been my favorite subject to begin with anyway. Also, I think when you get to know your body and its functions well, you can be in better control of your actions and can take better care of yourself. Learning anatomy helped to know myself that way. Q : This was a great beginning. What next? Any plans of acting in Hollywood movies? May be in the future. I watched Jackie chan action movies growing up. But I would like to focus on current projects that I have. Congratulations again Abhimanyu. Thank you for sharing your personal and bollywood experience with us. Looking forward to your next movie. Wish you the best !

Extremely Busy People Learn Meditation by BK Sister Jayanti More people are living, but fewer are choosing, life in the fast lane. The need to restore balance, find inner peace and replenish spiritual power can be satisfied by some form of daily meditation. Sister Jayanti, an extremely busy person in her own right, presents the how to of meditation and ways that meditation can help to take the stress out of busyness. I wonder how well I know myself. Sometimes I really do wonder because I surprise myself at my own reactions and responses in certain situations. I wish I could have behaved a little bit differently. It's one of the indications that tell me that I need to know myself a little better. In a materialistic world everything carries values in terms of matter. So often the value that I have placed in myself has also been associated with external factors, the possessions that I have, the property that I own, the position and profile that I occupy or the position that others give me. Very often I see myself in compartments, just simply in the way that others see me. What is it that you see when you look at me? Instantly the inner computer begins its calculations and we connect with each other in terms of our face, our colour, our skins, our features, our age, the profession we work with and yet, when I begin to think about it, I question this and wonder whether external factors tell me anything either about myself or about you. And I begin to be aware of things that are actually not material at all, nothing to do with my external form or external situations and these are the things that I actually value and appreciate about myself. I look inside and I become aware of things like my feelings, my emotions, my thoughts and I begin to wonder which bit of me is really me. It's important that I learn to separate two identities, the material identity, that is the physical form, and the inner reality of my thoughts and feelings. It's important to know things in terms of the external, but much more important to know that which is under the surface, that which is below the skin, and when I focus my attention inside, on my inner being, that's when our journey begins. Coming into this inner space and finding what's happening in my own inner world is actually an adventure as marvelous as the adventures of outer space. Where is it that my thoughts and feelings emanate from? As I begin to allow my mind to be quiet I discover that the source of life, the source of energy that I am, is actually just a spark, a being, a point. I am not 5 feet tall, but I am just a point of light. In our language we use sometimes this expression `my soul', or `I have a soul' and yet this is not true at all-the reality is that I am a soul, I am this point of light. And operating from this consciousness creates a total change in my awareness. In this awareness, knowing who I am, I am able to step beyond all those limits that the physical body has imposed

on me. So often I have said "I can't do this, that or the other", and yet none of that is reality. I am this eternal being of light. I am being of light, I am actually a being of love; these are my natural qualities, and coming back to this awareness means that I'm able to go beyond all barriers, all boundaries. I am able to find that inner freedom of the self. In this awareness of knowing who I truly am, I'm able to manage myself.

original and natural qualities of mine, and now that I know who I am, all these qualities naturally belong to me again and in this awareness I radiate light, peace and might. And now I let my thoughts come back to the awareness of the physical body that I occupy and the situations in life that I find myself in today, but now I come back with an outlook transformed with an attitude which is very different.

Sometimes we question whether the original state of the self is that of goodness. And yet peace is that which is totally natural for me, and so I know that it is a state that belongs to me. I don't need to attempt it. It is there within me. In a life in which one is very busy, if I know how to turn my attention just for a moment, to this point of light that I am peace is instantly accessible. When I find that inner peace, it's like the recharging of the battery and then I am able to accomplish all that I need to accomplish on the external level. If I can even do this for one minute within every hour I would find that the other 59 minutes are able to flow very, very smoothly.

Coming home in this awareness of I the soul, the master of this physical instrument, this precious body of mine, I know now what it is I have to convey through my eyes, through my lips, through my actions, I know the direction that I have to move in. My vision of others has also been transformed. I don't put them into boxes anymore. I am able to see them as external beings, as souls. I still carry on with those things I need to do, but now having created that original eternal world also, there is clarity in the way which I think; there is understanding and empathy in the way I behave with others; there is power in my actions so that my actions lead to My own being of peace inside also means I have the right conclusions; and positive results power inside. s a fertility specialist, Dr. Dorette Noorhasan has unique empathy, kindness and compassion for her patients. Having stood in the shoes of both a fertility doctor and fertility patient, she understands the complex emotional and physical journeys of families who are struggling with infertility. Dr. Noorhasan and her husband met later on in their reproductive lives and had difficulty conceiving a child. Eventually, they sought help from a fertility clinic, and they ended up completing five cycles of in vitro fertilization (IVF). After numerous failed attempts, they finally were successful in creating an embryo, which was then transferred to a surrogate who successfully carried and delivered their son. “It’s because of my surrogate’s kindness, that I am a mother today,” remarks Dr. Noorhasan. Her experience with infertility, has shaped her approach as a doctor to ensure that her patients feel supported through every step of their fertility journey.

HELPING TO PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD Dr. Rahul Bhatt & Dr. Jarna Rathod-Bhatt are foot, ankle and heel pain specialists located in Arlington, TX 76015 Dr. Bhatt specializes in non-surgical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. He is certied by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the Council for Medical Education and Testing in wound care. He is qualied in forefoot and rearfoot surgery by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr Jarna’s training was focused on all aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery with particular emphasis on lower extremity trauma, elective foot and ankle reconstruction, and wound care. She is certied by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and qualied in forefoot and rearfoot surgery by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. The doctors are on staff at Medical City Arlington, Medical City Las Colinas and Baylor Scott & White - Irving. So how did you two meet and come to work in Texas? We met as students in medical school in New York. Afterwards, we started our residency training at the Northwell Forest Hills Hospital in Flushing, NY, and we got married at the start of our second year. During our fellowship training, an opportunity for private practice opened up in Arlington, TX. As we both had a desire to live in the south, we decided that this would be a great opportunity to be able to work together as well. We currently have offices in Arlington and Irving. Do you speak any other languages besides English? Bhatt : I also speak Hindi, and am partially fluent in Spanish. Rathod : I speak Gujarati, Hindi, Swahili, and am also partially fluent in Spanish. What is a podiatrist? A podiatrist has earned a 4 year specialized medical degree as a “Doctor of Podiatric Medicine”. The Doctor of Podiatric Medicine is one of four medical disciplines (DO, MD, DPM and DVM) that can prescribe medications, practice medicine and perform surgery of the foot and ankle. The conditions we treat include but are not limited to: ingrown nails, nail fungus, ulcers, warts, heel pain, arch pain, ankle pain, foot and ankle fractures. Essentially, if it’s an injury, infection, abnormality, or condition involving your feet or ankle, a podiatrist is generally the person you should see. Podiatrists are also involved with diabetic patients, as they will work with a diabetes management team to deal with serious foot issues like diabetic neuropathy.

Is foot pain normal? No pain is normal, but it’s not surprising how many people experience it considering the types of shoes we wear. The feet are often neglected. They are the last things we take care of, but our feet determine whether we’re going to get knee pain, ankle pain, or back pain. They are the foundation of our health. Literally. They are what get us moving. Injury, overuse, or conditions causing inflammation involving any of the bones, ligaments or tendons in the foot can cause foot pain. Arthritis and tendonitis are common causes of foot pain. Injury to the nerves of the feet may result in intense burning pain, numbness or tingling (peripheral neuropathy). Why do I have pain in the arches of the feet? Probably the most common cause of heel pain or arch pain is in the form of ‘plantar fasciitis’. This is especially common in active individuals. Other causes may include stress fractures, tendonitis, and ligament sprains.

What is a bunion? How do I avoid bunion surgery? A bunion (also referred to as hallux valgus) is often described as a bump on the side of the big toe. But a bunion is more than that. The visible bump actually reflects changes in the bony framework of the front part of the foot. The big toe leans toward the second toe, rather than pointing straight ahead. This throws the bones out of alignment and can contibute to pain and difficulty fitting into shoes. Early identification and treatment with shoe modifications, specialized shoe inserts (orthotics), antiinflammatory medications, padding, and injections can often can often avoid the need for surgery.

What tips should I follow when shopping for shoes? We strongly encourage individuals to wear the appropriate shoes for each occasion. For example, one should wear sneakers, instead of sandals, while playing sports. Patients with foot deformities, such as hammertoes and bunions, should wear shoes that are wider, with a high toe box, in the forefoot region. This prevents irritation against prominent areas and can prevent undue strain at bone prominences, and minimize overall pain. This holds true in diabetic individuals, especially those with neuropathy. Such simple preventive measures can minimize the risk of infections, gangrene, and amputation.

Why do people with diabetes need to see a podiatrist? Most patients with diabetes will benefit by a routine examination every 6 months. Diabetes can cause neuropathy or vascular changes to the feet that can cause secondary problems that could lead to hospitalizations and even worse, amputations. Is it more expensive to be treated by a podiatrist? It is no more expensive than seeing any other specialist. The patient is responsible for his/her co-pay at the time of visit.

Colon Rectal Surgery and Colonoscopy

TOPPICK

DOCS

Risk Factors The exact cause of colorectal cancer is unknown the following factors can increase one's risk of colorectal cancer. -

The Bottom line COLORECTAL CANCER

can be saved

C

olon cancer (commonly referred to as colorectal cancer) is preventable and highly curable if detected in early stages. The colon is the first 4 to 5 feet of the large intestine. Colorectal cancer tumors grow in the colon's inner lining.

-

Age: More than 90% of people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer after age 50. Family history of colorectal cancer (especially parents or siblings). Personal history of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis for eight years or longer. Colorectal polyps. Personal history of breast, uterine or ovarian cancer.

Prevention Colorectal cancer is preventable. Nearly all cases of colorectal cancer develop from polyps. They start in the inner lining of the colon and most often affect the left side of the colon. Detection and removal of polyps through colonoscopy reduces the risk of colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer screenirig recommendations are based on medical and family history. Screening typically starts at age 50 in patients with average risk. Those at higher risk are usually advised to receive their first screening at a younger age. While it is not definitive, there is some evidence that diet may play a significant role in preventing colorectal cancer. A diet high in fiber (whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts) and low in fat is the only dietary measure that may help prevent colorectal cancer.

Colorectal Cancer Symptoms Colorectal cancer often causes no symptoms and is detected during routine screenings. Screening and Surveillance for Colorectal Cancer Colorectal cancer symptoms include: -

Facts and Stats - In 2017, nearly $36,000 new cases of colorectal cancer were expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. - About 1 in 20 (5%) Americans will develop colorectal cancer during their lifetime. - Colorectal polyps (benign abnormal growths) affect about 20% to 30% of American adults. JULY + AUGUST

-

A change in bowel habits (e.g. constipation or diarrhea). Narrow shaped stools. Bright red or very dark blood in the stool. Ongoing pelvic or lower abdominal pain (e.g., gas, bloating or pain). Unexplained weight loss. Nausea or vomiting. Feeling tired all the time

Abdominal pain and weight loss are typically late symptoms, indicating possible extensive disease. Anyone who experiences any of the above symptoms should see a physician as soon as possible. Colon or rectal cancer, (commonly referred to as colorectal cancer), affects the colon (large intestine) or rectum (bottom 6 inches of the colon). Colo rectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer, excluding skin cancers.

Why Should People Be Screened?

Virtual Colonoscopy

Colorectal cancer rarely causes symptoms in its early stages. It usually starts out as a benign colorectal polyp. These polyps are commonly found during standard screening exams of the colon and rectum. While the majority of polyps will not become cancer, certain types hiay be precancerous. Having polyps removed reduces a person's future risk of colorectal cancer.

This test uses computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create a 3-D picture of the inside lining of the colon and rectum. If abnormalities are found. a colonoscopy is needed. It is also useful when a colonoscopy in incomplete. However, most insurance plans and Medicare may not cover this procedure.

Screening Tests

Screening Recommendaons

Fecal occult blood testing and flexible sigmoidoscopy are often used together to screen for colorectal cancer. However, colonoscopy is considered the “gold standard” screening test and is the preferred method unless medical problems prevent it. Fecal occult blood testing A simple test that detects invisible amounts of blood in multiple stool samples. If blood is found it may be a sign of a colorectal polyp or cancer. If the test positive, a colonoscopy is needed.

As part of a colorectal cancer screening program, colonoscopy is routinely recommended for adults starting at age 50. Having a colonoscopy every 10 years is standard practice. Flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years with annual stool occult blood testing is an acceptable option when colonoscopy cannot be done. -

People with a close relative (parent or sibling) with colorectal cancer or polyps should start screening at age 40 or 10 years before the youngest age at which a relative was diagnosed. These screenings should be done every five years, even if the test was normal.

-

Less common types of inherited colon cancer (e.g., hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer and familial adenomatous polyposis) may require far more frequent screening, starting at a much younger age.

Colonoscopy Examination of the entire colon with a long, thin flexible tube with a camera and a light on the end (colonoscope). This allows physicians to see not only the entire colon but also to remove polyps at thev same time.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Examination of the rectum and lower colon with a flexible lighted instrument if an abnormality is found, a colonoscopy is needed.

Air-contrast Barium Enema During this X-ray test, the colon is filled with air and contrast (dye) to make the lining visible. It is used primarily if a complete colonoscopy cannot be done. For more information or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Narinder K. Monga

Top Pick Media spoketo this amazing humanitarian who, moved by experiences with infants dying for want of medical care, decided to dedicate her life to ensuring “No child will be denied the right to quality health care”. Karuna: From a young age it's be natural to you to be selfless. In fact, you sacrificed a job opportunity to attend to the victims of the earthquake in Gujarat in 2001. When did you recognize your purpose was to support a greater cause and need than your own? Dr. SaiLakshmi: First of all it was never a sacrifice, it was highly self-centered. I believe that 'Giving with Generosity comes naturally to the human spirit & nature always responds with lots of love and abundance when the intentions are pure'. It's certainly been a beautiful spiritual journey with Ekam. This has always been my calling and if I had chosen anything else, that would have been the sacrifice! Ekam gives us this amazing opportunity and immense pleasure to take care of children and mothers. In turn, beautiful souls have come into my life and they have taught me and given me so much more. Karuna: Mother Teresa is your inspiration & you are certainly following in her footsteps with the birth of your brain child Ekam Foundation. Tell us the genesis of Ekam foundation. Dr. SaiLakshmi: During my days as a post graduate student, I saw a huge disparity in supply and demand of medical care especially in the public hospitals. For example, if 10 sick children came to the hospital only 5 got treated and the rest were turned down due to a shortage of life saving drugs, equipment, man power, lab investigations etc. When a parent learns that treatment cost for their child is anywhere from 3 to 4 lakhs, they are willing to sacrifice their sick child and have another healthy child instead, as they cannot afford treatment.

JULY + AUGUST

As doctors we want to treat all children brought to us and shouldn't have to be faced with the dilemma of financials constraints hence was sown the seed of Ekam in 2009 with very strong intentions: No children should be refused health care due to financial constraints No parent should feel guilty that they are unable to afford treatment for their child and No hospital should refuse medical treatment due to financial constraints Karuna: Ekam foundation has been growing in the rural parts of India and brought down child mortality rate since 2009. How are you growing Ekam NGOs and Chapters outside India? Dr. SaiLakshmi: The support from my medical school classmates in setting up Ekam Chapters has been tremendous. Dr. Neelama & Dr. Aruna from Baton Rouge and Dr. Shilpa from San Jose have been instrumental in setting up Ekam USA In 2016, 501 (c) (3) organization. Ekam Chapter in Canada is spearheaded by Dr. Rama and in the UK by Dr. Ajay. Each Chapter adopts a district in Tamil Nadu, the goal is to provide them with an understanding of the dynamics of maternal and child healthcare. We have a completely transparent model where they can assess how their intervention is helping in lowering mortality rate. This year we are focusing on a second initiative, 'Youth Ambassador Program'. The Youth is our future and we want to instill these values in themto carry Ekam forward. It's been an incredible feeling of Oneness (Ekam) as we have set up almost 20 chapters since 2016. TOPPICKMEDIA.COM

Recipients of

Dr. Sailakshmi Balijepalli

Nari Shakti Award by The President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee Karuna: You have received several awards for your work. But when you were honored with the highest award - Nari Shakti Puraskar award in 2015, how did that moment feel? Dr. SaiLakshmi: To me the best award is the smile on the mothers' face when they receive their healthy child in their arms. The first thought that occurred to me was “how can a small organization like Ekam receive such a big award”! But I gathered it was a sign from God saying “you better do more, that's why you've been given this award”.I certainly felt honored when I received this award and I assure that with this movement of oneness we will continue to reach out and serve. Karuna: What is your dream for the future of Ekam foundation? Dr. SaiLakshmi: We want to grow the Chapters globally, where countries with resources can support the ones in need. We are setting up chapters in USA as a model for the rest of the world. We would like to scale it up to other states across India and connect it with different parts of the world creating Global Oneness. We need to work on a war footing as the statics are very glaring. We have a complete technical model that can be replicated across in supporting the mothers and children in need. Karuna: Can you share special story that impacted you? Dr. SaiLakshmi: I recall this story of a beautiful soul from my days in House Surgeoncy. She was totally emaciated and unconscious when admitted. For two months we took care of her & developed a bond. Sometimes, we would literally steal medicines for her care. But when she recovered and left, instead of feeling happy, I experienced a feeling of incompleteness. I realized that it wasn't me giving her but she was the one who gaveme this immense feeling of healing! I realize every child that has come to Ekam has impacted me, given this immense feeling of healing & wonderful opportunity to reach out. It is we who have been blessed and I always thank God, my parents and everyone who has been a part of this Oneness journey. For information on how you too can make an impact at Ekam, open chapters, become a youth ambassador or simply spread the word of Oneness and Abundance, please go to ekamusa.org

A powerhouse having 5.7million followers on Twitter and 4.1 million followers on Instagram and counting , who lives on her own terms not just by mere words but by example through her very own life and actions giving strength to thousands of women across the globe. Sushmita Sen had the pleasure of meeting mother Theresa, just before she passed away in Calcutta /India. She saw her work in the orphanages and in the missionaries of charity and was inspired and in her own words expressed that she learnt from her how to be a mom. She was awarded ‘ The Mother Theresa International Award’ by NGO ‘The harmony foundation for her efforts towards achieving social justice. At 24 years of age, being a single girl , Sushmita adopted her first daughter Reene and later Alisah who she says have been born from her heart Sushmita showed the world that you don’t need a man to be a mom . All you need is God, love and the strength of a woman. With that power of unconditional love she now has two immense creations of strength that call her “Mom”. She has single handedly raised her two kids defying all odds in a so called mans world.

f there is any woman who touches your heart warmly and blows your mind, all at the same time, it would have to be the former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress, the ever so beautiful and charismatic Sushmita Sen. She could rightly be called the fist lady of India for all her first’s. One can never forget that moment, exactly a quarter of a centaury ago in 1994, when those results were announced and 18 year old Sushmita Sen became the very first Indian to win the title of ‘Miss Universe’ putting India on the international map of beauty with a purpose and rightfully so. Literally the whole country gleamed with joy and pride celebrating that victory that we all experienced through her.

JULY+AUGUST

In 2014 Sushmita had gone through an adrenal crisis and was declared steroid dependent for life. She had to take the steroid hydrocortisone, every 8 hours to stay alive. Sushmita under went treatment in London and Germany. It was a very traumatic time in her life experiencing loss of hair every day, with very high blood pressure, heavy eyes and loss of bone density among other side effects not forgetting the fact that she was a single mom. She was even advised to change her profession but this defiant strong willed diva decided if she goes down, she would do so living her life to the fullest on her terms. Advised by doctors to stay away from anti gravity she defied it (which she clearly doesn’t advice anyone to) and got her trainer to do exactly just that and she then got into yoga until one day she collapsed and was rushed to a hospital in Abu Dhabi where she was taken off the steroids in hospital and did the Synacthen test again. This time the results were a MIRACLE !! The doctor told her that in his 35 years of medical practice ,he had never seen anyone with an adrenal failure that had come back to producing cortisone again which means she did not have to take those steroids again and was on her way to recovery. And this takes me back to the very first time I ever met Sushmita 18 years ago at the ‘Warsi’ residence on one gloomy evening where this ray of sunshine walked up to me and hugged me whispering in my ear “ Juliet , this too shall pass.” I’m so glad it did for you Sushmita ,you kind hearted angel. We wish you only the best. Continue to spread your love and joy and touch more lives, which very evidently you do. Shine like the sun and reach for the stars miss universe and we will follow you …..

HOROSCOPE TOPPICK JULY-AUGUST (2019) You could come up against a lot of opposition. You can either take these conicts personally or you can turn that frown upside-down and see it as a learning experience. Some of you will still have some interesting opportunities coming your way. You may meet a man or a teacher who can help you reach your objectives–again.

You may be on a spiritual journey throughout the whole thing, so you probably won’t give a ying rat’s petute no matter what happens! There are many different things happening at once. You won’t know whether to make heads or tails of it–and that’s probably just the way you like it! Make love, not war!

There could be a breakthrough in personal relationships. You may have a vision of the future, or just get a hold of some really bad acid. You still have that insight and self-awareness thing going on. Those of you with Pisces rising may have a breakthrough in a personal relationship, and this can happen through unorthodox behavior. you’ll be very charming, it’s a good time to apply for a job. In fact, a job offer may come a few days later–but you probably won’t like it.

Pisces cuspers will be assertive and able to get all their ideas across to others. Accomplishing anything may be difcult. You may feel bogged down in the quagmire of life, but you might also be able to use your imagination to solve your problems. Everything should be going along smoothly, people will nd you easy to talk to, and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy yourself.

Some of you will have the advantage when it comes to work and solving difcult problems. you can expect some good news, probably about a career boost. Tension may push Gemini cuspers into a little tiff with an important person. Career opportunities may be on the horizon, but you may have to dump some excess baggage. Career opportunities may be on the horizon, but you may have to dump some excess baggage. Some of you have to give up some fun things in exchange for success at work. You’ll be bright, witty and able to make progress with some vital goals. You may get some surprising help from an experienced person. You may be able to move ahead with your life’s ambitions. You may feel like changing your appearance, but be careful–one person’s fashion statement is another person’s freak show. You’ll be bright, witty, dynamic, and able to charm the pants right off anyone who comes into your purview. You may get tired of hearing that, but I doubt it! There’s still a risk of overestimating your own self worth. This is also a great time to have a party! Most of you love being in the limelight all year round, but this is the time of year when you’ll shine even more brightly. Everything is just peachy for most of you. Good luck could be coming your way and things may just seem to work out in your favor. And some of you with Virgo rising might go rooting around for something strange. You may respond to your friends in a different way, passion may be revived in an old relationship, or maybe you’ll just feel like going out and getting something strange.

You’ll be dynamic, articulate and just cute. You’ll be talkative, some of you will be energetic, and of course you’ll be able to charm the pants off everyone around you–but that’s nothing new! If you were born on the cusp of Scorpio, this doesn’t apply to you, so don’t worry about it.

This month has its ups and downs, but nobody does the old up and down like you do! you could get snippy and piss off the wrong person. A streak of good luck comes later on. You may be able to achieve some long awaited goals in an unanticipated way or with help from an unexpected source, or from an older person.

things become more complicated. To take advantage of a career opportunity, you may have to give up some things that you hold dear—like your self-respect? Just be aware that when you get home, you might have some pretty pissed off people waiting for you. Hey, it wouldn’t be the rst time!

PORTUGAL HIGHLIGHTS

By: Dr. Reena Koppala

Portugal, officially Portuguese Republic, is a country lying along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe.

Day 1:

We got on to a flight from Dallas to

Madrid and had a one-day stopover in Spain. At that time my son was an ardent fan of soccer, so this stopover was a surprise for him. We went on a sightseeing tour of Madrid and had breakfast, lunch and early dinner in Madrid. Just before we went on to board the flight to Lisbon we made a stop to shop for footballs and jerseys.

Day 2:

We landed in Lisbon, Portugal

capital. Lisbon's urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.8 million people, being the 11th-most populous urban area in the European Union. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. The westernmost

portions of its metro area form the westernmost point of Continental Europe, which is known as Cabo da Roca, located in the Sintra Mountains. In Lishhboaaaa (that is how they say it) we stayed at a hotel that was a 15th-century Portuguese palace with a sea view. The first thing my son picked was a Hippo tour. It was a minivan that took us around Lisbon and later drives into a sea and becomes a boat. We could barely keep our eyes open because of the jetlag. On our way back we stumbled across a museum, the Portuguese teachers were explaining about Ramayana and Mahabharata to their field trip students (made a note to read Jaya by Devdutt Pattanaik on Kindle once back). Later in the evening we traveled by train to

downtown Lisbon and had dinner at ' Timeout'. One of the most unique eatery places that I have ever been to. There were around 40 eating places under one roof with a contemporary look and so informal (fell in love with the concept). Strolled on the streets of the historic downtown and had late local coffee, Of course, shopping inclusive.

Day 3:

My son's pick for today was

Oceanário de Lisboa which is the world's largest saltwater Oceanarium and is a fantastic tourist attraction especially for families. Just to go to that place we took 3 forms of transportation metro, train, cable. One of the main adventures of any travel is “TRAVEL LIKE LOCALS”. Trying to understand Portuguese and trying to find

our way, was the most interesting part of our travel. Next stop was Vasco da Gama Shopping Center. We took a Cable car on the ocean and had lunch at Cais de Sondre. By the time we came back to our hotel, it was 6:00 pm. The hotel always had surprise exotic chocolates for kids. We quickly changed into formal wear and got ready to witness the iconic Fado show in style. Fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything but must follow a certain traditional structure. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fatefulness, and melancholia.Awesome Portuguese music mixed with dinner made it a perfect evening. We came back from the show around 12 am. Today we really felt the essence of Portugal.

Day 4:

Woke up late and had a brunch in

the hotel itself. Took the metro, to reach another station. There we went on a city hop off tours castle line and Belem line. Our next stop was Rossio Square or Praça do Rossio, officially called Praça de D. Pedro IV, is Lisbon's nerve center. The square is situated in the city's Baixa neighborhood, on the northern end of Rua Augusta, very close to Restauradores Square. Praça do Rossio is the liveliest area in the capital of Portugal and where many locals and tourists meet up. We had a good walk and browsed all the antique shops on our way. My son Arnav played with water that was hitting the shores for sometime before we moved on. Our next stop was Padrão dos Descobrimentos; Monument of the Discoveries, which is a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River, Lisbon. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and the Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or Age of

Exploration) during the 15th and 16th centuries. From the top of this monument, we had a breathtaking view of Lisboa. It was 6 pm now and we headed back to our Palacio. We walked for over 3 miles to get to our train station. My son said that he may forget this trip but will never forget the walk from the monument to the train station. We reached Hotel and almost collapsed, had a quick dinner and called it a day. It is at this hotel we learned the essence of Peri Peria very hot sauce made with red chili peppers.

Day 5:

We started our day at 6 am. Took a

cab to central Lisboa to board the tour bus to the Sintra. Sintra is consistently ranked as one of the wealthiest and most expensive municipalities in both Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula as a whole. Sintra is similarly known for its high standards of living, consistently ranking as one of the best places to live in Portugal. The historic center of the Vila de Sintra is famous for its 19thcentury Romanticist architecture, historic estates & villas, gardens, and numerous royal palaces & castles, which resulted in the classification of the town and its historic passage as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Palacios Reais de Sintra was beautiful and calm. We had a wonderful stroll spending our afternoon there on the cobbled streets. Had lunch at a 1945 Portuguese restaurant. Don't miss Paste De Nata the Portuguese official dessert. Later grabbed some coffee and went on a shopping spree. Loved the village ambiance and spending time with the locals. Towards the evening started our way back and drove to Cascais another beautiful town so pure and so rich in history. We stopped briefly at Cabo da Roca or Cape Roca the westernmost point of the Europe Continent. Now we called it a day and headed back to our hotel. Woke up early had a quick breakfast and headed to Cristo Rei, took a ferry to the other

part of the town Your trip would not be complete without visiting this place.

Day 6:

The giant statue in cement was

constructed to express gratitude because the Portuguese were spared the effects of World War II. To view Cristo Rei in close proximity was an experience by itself. Later returned to Lisbon and visited the Jerónimos Monastery. The Jerónimos Monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém.We later took a tram to Jorge Castle. It was totally uphill ... my son got to play with the peacocks there. He and his dad visited the entire fort and later saw the archaeological sites. The scenic view at night from the castle was spectacular. By this time it was dark, we quickly wrapped up our shopping and walked back to our station en route to our hotel. I started packing our bags and now my very own husband and son disowned me and they refused to give me any space in their luggage for all my shopping. At last, I did some pushing and pulling and finally got to close my suitcase. We woke up at 3 am in the morning and headed back to home sweet home Dallas on a 16 hr flight.
