Councillor’s earnings revealed News that Westmeath County Councillors have earned an average of over €26,000 last year has caused quite a stir in the midst of an election campaign.
Just two weeks away from polling day on 23 May, it emerged on Tuesday of this week that Westmeath County Councillors claimed more than €600,000 in expenses and salaries per year for 2012 and 2013. Individual payments rose by
€1,00o last year to an average of over €26,000 and, coming a time when families across the county are hard-pressed by the difficult economic climate, it’s sure to prove a real talking point. Cllr Johnnie Penrose, the
highest earner in Westmeath over the last two years, with €75,574, has defended the payments, pointing out that he was paid an additional €26,000 in Cathaoirleach’s allowance. (See inside).
Local Government Minister Phil Hogan has defended the decision by Fine Gael to run just one candidate from Athlone in the Longford/ Westmeath By-Election. Meanwhile, Labour have confirmed that they will run Denis Leonard in the ByElection and Council
election. In an exclusive interview with Topic at the Fine Gael convention where Gabrielle McFadden was officially ratified for FG, Minister Hogan said it was “appropriate” that McFadden enjoy a solo run, and he said candidates who wished to run, including Mullingar Councillor Peter Burke, will have another chance in 2016.
