Paco Roca considers himself to be one of the lucky ones, who has managed to live out his childhood dream. Since he was a child he wanted to work as an illustrator and today he combines his illustrations with comics.
Success came with Arrugas (2007), that tells about Alzheimer’s, old age, and solidarity, and among other awards received the 2008 Spanish National Comic Prize. With more than 50.000 copies sold in Spain, it is considered one of the most important comics of the decade. It has also been published in France, Italy, Holland, Finland, Germany and Japan. Since then, he has published Las Calles de Arena (2008), Emotional World Tour (2009), El invierno del dibujante (2010), Memorias de un hombre en pijama (2011), and La Metamorfosis (2011).
Roca also worked as a writer and character designer on the film adaptation of the graphic novel Arrugas (Wrinkles), which has received the Goya Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Animated Film. The film will be released in the U.S. this summer 2013. On Easter Sunday 1513, when Juan Ponce de León became the first European to land on the shores of what is now the United States territory, little could he have imagined that he was setting into motion an amazing story that is still very much alive five centuries later, when fifty million Americans share a common Hispanic heritage.
The five hundredth anniversary of Ponce de León’s arrival to Florida in 2013 offers a unique opportunity to both celebrate and reflect. Indeed, the key role played by Spanish language and culture in the making of this great nation deserves to finally be fully acknowledged. From the founding of St. Augustine, the first city ever established on U.S. soil, to the creative vibrancy of contemporary Latino communities, the Hispanic presence, along with its values and traditions, has decisively contributed to the shaping of a unique multicultural American spirit.
SPAIN arts & culture will be deeply involved with the commemoration events, working in close partnership with the Viva Florida 500 program led by the State of Florida and the Spain-Florida Foundation 500 Years, as seen in the distinctive Floridian flavor of this catalog and the exciting series of events and shows planned all across the Sunshine state. This issue also marks the extension of SPAIN arts & culture to Canada, as well as the launching of ‘Crafts & Talent From Spain’ a very special collaboration of our brand with the most avant-garde small Spanish design firms, with the first products becoming available to our followers in early spring. A Tribute to Florida BY Gina Montaner Gina Montaner is a journalist and writer. Her latest novel “La Mala Fama” was published by Random House-Mondadori. She’s a frequent columnist for U.S, Spanish and Latin American papers.
This year we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the state of Florida when on Easter Sunday 1513 Ponce de León impressed by the vegetation of the peninsula situated at the southern point of the North American continent christened this land with the name of “Pascua Florida”. Five hundred years have passed since the spring of 1513 when the Spanish expedition arrived to Florida’s coasts with a fleet of three ships, marking the start of the exploration of the vast territory of what is now known as the United States. And throughout this period, both the appearance and composition of these lands have changed so much, so as to provoke astonishment among the group of adventurers that marveled at the beauty of wilderness of which was said to hold the Fountain of Youth.
If today Ponce de León were to visit this sunny state wedged between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, the population density comprising twenty million inhabitants in what were once vast stretches of nearly inhabitable land would surprise him. However, he would notice that even five hundred years later the footprint of Hispanic heritage remains intact, though enhanced by the presence of a bubbly Hispanic community. A legacy that remains vibrant in the city of St. Augustine, the oldest Spanish and European settlement in the United States, and also in many other cities where Spanish customs and language are transmitted from generation to generation in Hispanic homes.

Just visit Orlando, where the Puerto Rican colony has settled in recent times and Puerto Rican businesses flourish; or hike through the tobacco shops of Ybor City, a historic neighborhood in Tampa established by Valencia native Vicente Martinez-Ybor, where Cuban national hero Jose Martí used to give speeches; and down to Miami, the neurological hub of Hispanics and meeting point for Latin America, Europe and the United States.

While in cities like Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago the Hispanic population is everywhere and its prevalence is increasing, Miami is the model that best illustrates the coexistence and assimilation of Hispanics into the mainstream, without incurring renunciation or denial of their values and traditions that have survived over time. A city of nearly six million inhabitants whose uniqueness is evident from the moment you land at the airport, shaken by a tropical moisture that is softened by the aroma of the Cuban coffee sold in the terminals.
From the time of the sixties Miami became the home to millions of exiled Cubans, today the county is divided among Colombians, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Salvadorians, Dominicans, and let’s not forget the colony of Spanish entrepreneurs who, emulating their ancestors, have come to this coast, attracted by the beaches and career opportunities offering a dynamic metropolis inserted into the global economy.

And it is in Miami where an expat, a newcomer, can feel at home because the multicultural community is hospitable and makes you want to experience the flavors, the music and art of this city’s diversity. Foreigners can connect with their roots while watching the many international films screened at the Tower Theater. Personal voices rejoice at the International Book Fair held downtown every year. And on some streets, near the Port of Miami, art shows and other cultural events organized by institutions such as the Spanish Cultural Center, invite the public to merge together in the inevitable encounter forged by Ponce de León and his successors in a land that was desolate at first, until it was molded into the melting pot that now defines the essence of the United States.

Today those adventurers who took to the sea would not feel lost in Florida where they could hear, on the streets, Castilian Spanish modernized and often altered into “Spanglish”. They would also rediscover the exuberance of nature that at one time astonished them, and in the abundance of Spanish style architecture, they would come to realize that their passage through these lands left an enduring imprint.

A book and exhibition featuring the work of 12 IberoAmerican photographers that work or reside in U.S., resulting in a bold vision of a reality that is profoundly transforming this country, yet remains poorly understood by the public. The photobook will tour the U.S. presented by Spanish photographer Ricardo Cases, and curator Claudi Carreras, accompanied by different photographers from the book in each city. Prints, sculpture, and artist books by Spanish abstract artist Antoni Tàpies are on view through March 18 at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. The show features 23 works, mostly created between 1963 and 1971. Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies worked primarily in abstract formal language and was part of the early movement to bring a sense of texture, surface and thickness to the application of various media. He was born in Barcelona in 1923 and died this past February at the age of 88.

The Drawing Center presents the first North American museum exhibition of work by Ignacio Uriarte. Uriarte’s practice takes its inspiration from his former career in business administration, employing standard office supplies such as ballpoint pens and highlighters to create geometrically patterned line drawings, paper constructions, and animations. Uriarte’s art looks at the ways in which the information, skills, working conditions, and materials encountered in the workplace can become a source of influence and artistic inspiration.
Uriarte’s approach resulted in diverse drawings, converting the repetitions of office work into vertiginous monochromes, and geometric abstractions. When

In the age of information, actual reality has been supplanted by virtual reality, computer simulation, and false narratives. Since the concept of utopia is based on the improvement of reality, the disappearance of the real also signals the end of utopia.
Without Reality There Is No Utopia illustrates this premise by examining false narratives that masquerade as truth: the collapse of Communism in the 1980s; the current financial crisis, which heralds the demise of Capitalism; the contradictions inherent in geopolitics; and the explosion of democratic uprisings around the world. The exhibition includes work by more than two-dozen international artists, and features works of photography, video, drawing, painting, collage, and more.

“In Ictu Oculi”, meaning “in the twinkling of an eye”, is a documentary by Spanish photographer Greta Alfaro, revealing the identities of the mysterious guests who descended en masse to wolf down the banquet. Greta Alfaro is a graduate in Fine Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. She currently studies a MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in London.

Nineteenth-Century Vistas by Martín Rico
The Prado and the Meadows Museum present the firstever monographic exhibition on landscape painter Martín Rico y Ortega (1833-1908). It highlights the breadth of Rico’s career with 106 works of art, including paintings, drawings, and sketchbooks depicting urban and natural landscapes of Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, and his native Spain. The Guastavino family’s soaring tile vaults grace some of the most iconic structures in the nation, including Grand Central Terminal, the Museum of Natural History, the Boston Public Library, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Yet the name, the accomplishments, and the architectural legacy of this family of first-generation Spanish immigrants are virtually unknown. The National Building Museum presents a major exhibition dedicated to highlighting Guastavino’s work. It includes historic drawings, photographs, and objects, along with newly commissioned photographs by London photographer Michael Freeman to help make the art, the engineering, and the immigrant story come alive for today’s audiences.

The beautifully-crafted cinema of Catalan filmmaker Isaki Lacuesta (born 1975) is a smooth blend of fiction, essay, allegory, documentary, compilation, even dramatic reenactment. Now building a reputation in Europe (in 2009 and 2011 he won the major award at the San Sebastián Film Festival), Lacuesta is a visual adventurer who seeks subjects that others would find daunting: a dadaist poet boxer, an ex– Argentine revolutionary, and a famous Spanish double agent are among his projects. Eschewing formal scripts, Lacuesta classifies his work as cine escrito (written cinema) and cine no escrito (unwritten cinema). “I always look, in an intuitive way, for a surprise.”

Luis García Berlanga (Valencia, June 12, 1921 – Madrid, November 13, 2010) is one of Spain’s most iconic filmmakers. His filmography is known for its morbid irony and acid satires about social and political situations. His films, at large, take place within the framework of Francoist dictatorship which makes Berlanga’s films an important part of a trajectory through history, that, in turn, allowed him to illustrate his wit and ability to bluff the censorship by recreating situations and dialogues that were not excessively explicit but of intelligent double – entendre.

A BRIGHT SIDE OF SPAIN: CRAFTS AND TALENT BY Barbara Celis Barbara Celis is a freelance reporter and documentary filmmaker, a frequent contributor to El Pais, a 2009 USC Annenberg/ Getty Arts Journalism Fellow, and the recipient of the 2011 Paco Rabal Cultural Journalism Award and the 2012 Ciudad de Badajoz Journalism Award.
Bulls, flamenco, gazpacho, tortilla... Beyond the lasting clichés about Spain another country exists, which over the last decade has begun to export many interesting products that defy these antiquated ideas. The merger between the Spanish tradition of craftsmanship, modern design, and a new generation of young artists with an international vocation has built a new map of Spanish small businesses that know no crisis and continue to expand horizons.
Many of these businesses cannot be defined as newcomers because they have been around for years. Camper (shoes), Castañer (espadrilles) Majorica (jewelry), or Custo (clothing) crossed our borders years ago and have become the leading Spanish brands within the scope of products that blend traditional craft techniques with the most innovative design. Camper started its journey in 1975 and opened its first store in 1981 in Barcelona. Soon after, it became one of the Spanish flagship names within the fashion industry. Owned by Mallorcan family Fluxá, Camper was the first shop ‘with Ñ’ (maintaining Spanish roots) that settled in New York’s Soho in 2002. A decade earlier it had already started its conquer of Europe. Today there are 68 Camper stores distributed across five continents, and the turnover of this company annually exceeds $200 million dollars. After the arrival of Camper in Soho, which remains one of the international showcases for fashion and design, other Spanish brands followed such as Mascaró, Tous, Custo and Agatha Ruiz de la Prada.

These are the pioneers, businesses with established boutique names, as well as, powerful and successful international careers. However, to understand how Spain has come to the forefront of today’s craft industry, it is essential to look into the new generation of artists and craftsmen who have understood that merging the tradition of these pioneers with the future of design is key when entering international markets.
In the XXI century, design has been integrated in all aspects of life. Camper understood this idea first, followed by companies with shorter histories such as Lékué household products, a favorite of the Japanese markets (the country where design is perhaps the most valued asset by the consumer), and by emerging brands such as peSeta, IOU, El Ganso, SuTurno, Loreak Mendian, Blackpata, or Helena Rohner. We cannot forget the way in which international designers, such as Jaime Hayón, Alvaro Catalán de Ocón, Patricia Urquiola and Carme Pinós have helped Spain to position itself within the XXI century design world.

The household products company Lékué, born in 1995, was given a facelift five years ago and managed to boost international sales by hiring a team of designers led by Luki Huber, a Swiss citizen who settled in Barcelona two decades ago, and was also a counselor to chef Ferran Adrià. Today 70% of Lékué production is exported abroad. Embracing what is known as ‘product design’ was key to Lékué’s success. Although Spain arrived late to the product design concept compared to other countries, it is now on the frontlines. One of the most important and famous designers on a global scale is 38 years old Madrilenian Jaime Hayón, defined by Time magazine in 2007 as one of the “most influential creators and visionaries of the century”. Another Spaniard, Alvaro Catalán de Ocón, is following Hayón’s steps as he’s already been featured in many international design magazines. Both studied abroad and began to shine for their assignments developed around the globe. Despite their international success, both have returned home to Spain and set up their headquarters. Hayón, whose work blurs the lines between art, decoration, and design, has a long resume that includes collaborations with the most prominent brands in the world of crafts, from Baccarat to Established and Sons, or Swarovski. Catalán de Ocón is more focused on the design of furniture and lamps, which he develops for other brands as well as for his own. Both are also prominent names in the

academic world: Hayón is the director of a Masters of Design and Innovation at IED Madrid and Catalán de Ocón is the coordinator of another master at the same institution.
“We didn’t use to have training in Spain for product designers in the past but now, the generation that studied abroad is back and they are helping to build an educational network within our country. Although Spain is not yet in the big league of international design schools, more and more foreigners are looking at our country for training, among other reasons because Hayón, Catalán and others are a great magnet for talent”, explains Paloma Uriel, architect and professor at IED Madrid.

In the field of design there are other prominent names that served as pioneers to lead the current generation: from Javier Mariscal to Patricia Urquiola, formed in Milan, a city that is still considered the world capital of design. Another veteran architect of international renown who has entered the world of furniture design is Carme Pinós, who sells her new line called Objects (shelves, tables and cupboards) from her studio in Barcelona. Alongside the big names there are small firms that have managed to position themselves both in Spain and abroad selling their crafts and giving Spain a strong position in the field.

Peseta’s founder Laura Martínez del Pozo, along with partner Jaime Sevilla Moreno, began producing a series of handbags and accessories more than a decade ago in Madrid. At the time small shops owned by local artisans with a modern vision were not common in Spain, but she was patient and unrelenting and with time gained success. Her generation, (those born in the seventies) made travel one of the pillars of its formation, realizing that small boutiques, like the one Peseta opened in the heart of Madrid, were all the rage in Europe and the U.S. Peseta’s work, with varied patterns and products ranging from bags to hats, among other accessories began selling well in Madrid causing word to spread overseas. In 2008 she received a visit from Marc Jacobs’s team seeking collaboration, marking her start with international success. Swedish Ikea, New York New Museum, and Berlin International Film Festival are some of the institutions that knocked on her door.

One of the features that set small Spanish producers apart from their international counterparts is their ability to build on the aesthetic and functional requirements imposed by the new century without forgetting Spanish tradition. Artisan tradition has always been in the Spanish DNA, and that makes Spain a great place for production. Paloma Cañizares, a well-known Spanish architect and designer, has recently founded PCM Design, where she serves as furniture editor. She looks for Spanish and foreign talent to produce their projects with one main requirement: the artists have to use traditional production techniques with a Spanish local base. Slovak Tomas Kral was one of her first discoveries: he has designed a collection of blown glass, hand-carved in the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja, which in past centuries was an international reference in the blown glass field. The number of Spanish craft brands keeps growing and taking over international markets. A great example is SuTurno, which specializes in print design and it works in two directions: they develop projects carefully crafted in limited numbers by Spanish artists for its own brand and they also work creating designs for other labels such as Marc Jacobs, Baum und Pferdgarten, Norse Projects, Jocomomola, Loreak Mendian, Indiwoman, Zara Home or Hakei. Blackpata, founded in 2010, offers a collection of beautifully crafted jewelry easily adaptable to the body. Earrings, pendants, bracelets, rings, brooches made in aluminum by designer Enrique Recio are created by hand without the use of electrical tools. Their presence in Spanish stores is growing quickly and recently Blackpata reached Chinese markets through a Beijing store. They are following the steps of veterans like Helena Rohner, whose Madrid jewelry boutique is a main reference for people in the field and whose jewels are well known around Europe and beyond. So, is there a financial crisis over Europe? Yes, but it doesn’t mean that Spain is trapped. On the contrary, with their creative resources on display in the world of crafts and design, Spain is ready to be at the frontline of good news for years ahead.

Jordi Puntí is one of the most interesting voices in Catalan prose. His first novel Maletes perdudes (2010) was awarded The XI Bookseller Prize and translated into twelve languages.

Celtic music from Galicia viewed with a Jazz perspective is one aspect of this musical journey. For this presentation, bagpiper Cristina Pato, composer Miguel Blanco, vocalist Antonio Lizama and guitarist Ximo Tebar will collaborate with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. The exhibition “A Tres Bandas” is presented as a material, sonorous and visual tale of crossbreeding, syncretism and hybridization of the Latin American musical sphere. The route of this journey is based on two central themes: a historical and critical review of the mixture of races, beliefs and fusions that took place in the merging of African, Indigenous and Hispanic cultures; and, the result of this process on this period’s music found in cities, instruments and social practices.
