My Dear Friends in Christ,

I am delighted to be the instructor in the Sunday S class for middle and high school youth. We need want more students. I am asking that the parents guardians of our youth to make a special effort to them get to Sunday School.

A good basic knowledge of the Bible is needed in for our youth to deal with that which the world ha offer them. Our class will not only learn how to read the Bible we will also learn how to study the Bible by using B dictionaries, handbooks, maps and other tools.

I urge all parent’s, guardians and interested person help our young people get to Sunday School. Our youth need the strong foundation that Sunday Sch will provide. Yours in Christ,

Ms. Loretta Davis

Palm Sunday is a Christian feast that marks the beginning of Holy Week and commemorates Jesus' triumphant return to the city of Jerusalem. In 2011, Palm Sunday was celebrated on April 17. Although the return to Jerusalem is recounted in all four canonical gospels, the traditions of Palm Sunday are largely based on the description from the Gospel of John. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" (John 12:12-13) By waving him with palm branches and using them to cover his path as he rode into the city on a donkey, the crowd indicated that he was revered and respected on the level of royalty. To celebrate the occasion, many Christian churches -- both Catholic and Protestant as well as the Eastern churches -- distribute palm leaves to congregation members who then carry them in a procession either inside or outside of the church. Often the palm fronds are knotted or woven into small crosses that can be kept by individuals in their homes as a reminder of the lessons of Holy Week. In areas of the world where palm leaves are not readily available, other native plants may be substituted and Palm Sunday may be alternatively referred to as Yew Sunday, Willow Sunday, or whatever else is used in that locality. The liturgy for Palm Sunday services usually follows the palm processions with a reading of the Passion story -- a meaningful reminder that many of the same crowd that welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem would participate in the mob that cheered for his death less than a week later. For Christians, Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the final week of Lent and the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter. It is also connected to the following year's liturgical calendar as the palm leaves are often returned to the church to be burned in the next year's Ash Wednesday rituals.

On Friday, June 24, 2011 the Episcopal Church Men of St. Stephen’s held a carwash fundraiser in the parking lot of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Youth participants were: Mason Fowler, Salim Nyakudya, William Stevenson, Iceline King, Cleopatra King, and Regan Starkie, Jr. Hot dogs and yard sale items were being sold at the same time as the car wash.

“I really like the idea of having yard sale & hot dog sale at the same time…. the more activities the better. The next project will be two Car Washes-one in the Spring & one in the Fall 2012. Let's try some new & different projects. All of the expenses were paid for by me & everyone else. Thanks again for everyone stepping up! I knew we could Succeed!” John Worsley

The Men raised a total of $525.50.

On Sunday July 17, 2011, Rhodra Anderson-Brown spoke to our congregation about a diocesan-wide campaign called NetsforLife. During the 195th Annual Convention of the Diocese, Bishop Curry announced this campaign to fight malaria. The campaign will run until the next convention in January 2012. The goal is to raise 40,000 nets, which is about one net for each communicant. If this goal is reached, up to 120,000 lives could be saved from Malaria in Africa. One net costs only $12 and provides safety for up to three people, mostly women and children, from mosquitoes during the night. I have been named St. Stephen’s NetsforLife Representative and have challenged each of our church members, even children, to purchase at least one net. The challenge has also gone out to all St. Stephen’s organizations to step up to the plate to make contributions as well. The ECW has already planned to make a donation of at least $100. If other groups followed this example, we would make a noticeable impact in helping meet the 40,000 net overall goal. On Sunday August 21st and September 18, 2011, a special offering will be taken up for this special campaign to be sent to the Episcopal Relief & Development for the purchase of these nets. St. Stephen’s has set an individual goal of 100 nets. I know, it may seem like a lot, but it can be done with a little effort! We have already gotten two individual contributions, with the first one donated by Miss Neenah Anderson, who is a 10 yr. old member of our church. This reminds me so much of the portion of Isaiah 11:6 in the Bible that states “and a little child shall lead them”. I was so moved by young Neenah’s generosity and concern for our neighbors on the other side of the world. A display for the NetsforLife campaign is in progress in our church’s fellowship hall that will serve as a reminder of the campaign and its importance in making a difference in the lives of others. On Wednesday June 28th, the youth of St. Stephen’s, along with three chaperones, Fr. Sintim, Tim Brown and Rhodra Anderson-Brown, left our church in route to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to spend two days of recreation and relaxation in a beautiful three floor Smoky Mountain luxury cabin equipped with Hot Tub, Playstation 2, Pool Table, Foosball and the most beautiful mountain views imaginable! While there, the youth enjoyed go-cart driving and shopping as well. However, the highlight of the trip was going whitewater rafting! Wow, talk about fun to the 10th power! The rafting adventure took place at “Rafting in the Smokies” in Gatlinburg Tennessee. It was an experience that most of the group had never had before, but enjoyed greatly! There is some talk already about doing it again! If we do decide to embark on another rafting trip, it would be great to have more adults to go, even the senior adults. Yes, I said “senior adults! “Rafting in the Smokies” offers courses that accommodate children as young as 3 years old or people as old as well, Methuselah! Seriously, it’s no joke! It is truly an adventure the entire family would enjoy! Submitted by Rhodra Anderson-Brown
