Dear Walkers, Cornwall has received much publicity for its many “tourist attractions”, Eden, Tate, Maritime Museum etc. However on this occasion we are celebrating a well established and distinctly more natural attraction, its coastline. Arguably Cornwall’s unique selling point. Surely there is no better way to really appreciate its inherent invigorating beauty than by taking a good long walk! The Helford, Fal and Roseland areas are blessed with some of the most stunning and unspoilt sections of coast and so it seemed a natural and obvious location to start a walking festival. Likewise it is appropriate for The Nare Hotel, given its enviable coastal position, to sponsor and host the launch of the first Fal River Autumn Walking Festival. I am delighted to join Toby Budd, the Fal River crew, and of course our spaniels, to launch the festival on Friday 21st October since it is something I have been really keen to see established. Many of the walks are being linked using ferries by way of The Carrick Roads, the highway of past times formed by the world’s third largest natural deep water harbour – The Fal River. It is no surprise then that charming pubs and villages are joined by footpaths and byways that meander down to the river. In the guests’ study at The Nare there hangs a map depicting the 1950’s acquisition of land around Nare Head by The National Trust. force who set about purchasing for The Trust sections of coastal land, where possible “up to 2 fields in,” all the way around the Cornish coast. What foresight, because much of the land we will be walking on during this festival is protected and owned by The Trust today. These walks would not have come together without the help of Paul Simmons (walkitcornwall), technical advisor and source of much knowledge. If possible do join him on one of his guided walks for he is truly inspirational. I really hope this festival will become the focal start of an activity which can be enjoyed by our many visitors and locals alike; not only during the fortnight festival but all year round. And, if it gets its boots on, could quite literally continue to be paced out around the whole of Cornwall’s 258 mile coastline - the county’s largest, free attraction!

PREPARATION AND WALKING SAFETY
Walking in this part of Cornwall is one of life’s great joys. There is unrivalled variation in the walks on offer, from the tranquillity of woodland glades to the high drama of rugged cliff tops, however there are two things that remain constant through all the walks: preparation and safety.
Don’t forget your Fal Mussel Card
n Some routes will take you onto the road. Make sure you face the oncoming traffic and are aware of your surroundings. n A basic first aid kit should be in your pack for any walks
which are likely to last all day. n Be a green walker and look after your surroundings. Take
Our top tips are designed to ensure you have the best possible walking experience and we recommend following them before you embark on any of the walks, particularly our self-guided ones. n Don’t leave home without a map. You can pick up a copy
of our area map for just £3 which is best used hand in hand with an Ordnance Survey map. n Wear suitable footwear and clothing. Make sure your shoes are sturdy and have a good grip. We like to wear layers when we’re walking then we’re never too hot or too cold. Waterproofs are a must if it looks like rain (check the forecast before you go) and so is a hat and sun cream if the sun is shining. n Fuel up. Make sure you have plenty of water with you if
you’re taking on one of our longer walks. A hot thermos (tea, coffee or soup!) is always a treat on a cold day. High-energy snacks and a packed lunch should be an ever present in your day sack. n If you are walking on your own make sure you tell some-

Starting in the hustle and bustle of a popular visitor attraction and slipping back through a beautifully designed 18th century landscape along woodland paths and under ancient oaks, past long forgotten slipways and on to an ancient and beautiful Iron Age Fort. This walk encapsulates the peace and tranquility of deep Cornwall letting you connect with your spiritual side. You can even have a go at dowsing for Bronze Age remains! The Walk: The Great Cornish Welly Walk, to raise funds for the RNLI, takes place on Sunday, October 30 and is a key event in the Fal River Autumn Walking Festival. The gentle five mile walk has great views of the Fal Estuary, Falmouth Bay, and the historic town of Falmouth and includes a number of places to stop for refreshments if required. There’s a nominal entry fee, and we ask walkers to try and raise enough money to cover the £42 cost of a pair of RNLI Wellies for one of our lifeboat volunteers in Cornwall. Wearing your own Wellies is optional but there will be prizes for the best wellies and nautical theme. Bring your whole family and have fun! Dogs are welcome and water and treats will be provided for our four legged supporters.
The Walk: This is a five mile circular walk following a gentle route around Falmouth and is accompanied by a sixteen page guide book providing a fascinating insight into the heritage of the town and in particular the influence of the sea on its development over the years. The guide book can be purchased from the RNLI Shop (Mon-Fri 10am-4pm & Sat 10am-1pm) – why not tie this in with a free guided tour of the lifeboat station and its lifeboats?

Take some time to explore the village, have a well deserved bite to eat at the local pub before walking up the hill to Gerrans Church. Passing the church turn left and follow the signs to the car park, carry on along the lane passing Treloan Farm towards Porth. Portscatho South West Coast Path When you reach Creek Stephen Point eor turn left and take the path towards Curgurrell and Curgurrell Farm. Turn left when you reach the lane and follow the route back passing The Rosevine Hotel. Re-trace your steps across the beach to return to the car park.

A visit to the castle is well worthwhile and we recommend you find the time to enjoy the St Anthony fantastic views. From the Castle continue north along the coastal footpath; the path runs
Taking the right fork you will start to climb inland heading east and as you crest the hill you will join the A3078. Turning right, follow the road south for around 100 yards before picking up the footpath on the left hand side. The path doubles back at this point and can be followed for another 100 yards where there is a turning left off the main path which will take you down past Bosloggas to the Percuil River. When you arrive at the river the path turns south and follows the shores of the river all the way back to St Mawes.

When you arrive in St Just take some time to enjoy St Just Church and the churchyard that Sir John Betjeman described as ‘the most beautiful on earth’. From St Just continue north alongside St Just Creek before breaking away from the river and heading inland. The latter part of the walk is on the road so take care. When you arrive at Smugglers’ Cottage you will be rewarded with arguably one of the best cream teas in Cornwall before catching the Enterprise Boat, departing at 1345hrs, back to St Mawes.

Continue walking on this footpath The Meudon Hotel via Enys, Gwarder and Pencoose until you reach Penryn. Turn right before heading down Church Hill. Take the path below St Gluvias Church and follow all the way to Flushing.

Leave the village by Carwinnion Road with the pub on your right. Turn right onto a tarmac path immediately past the Field Place houses. At the end of this path, cross the road and go over a stile beside fencing and along a path to a stile into a field. Follow the fields through Higher and Lower Penpol, crossing a series of stiles. You’ll meet Anna Marie Lane at Anna Marie Creek.

Turn left up the road and where it bends away from the coast go over the stile to the right of a gate ahead, into the National Trust property at Bosloe. Follow the coast path to the boat house at Port Saxon. Turn left by the gate and follow the path up through the Carwinnion Valley signed to Mawnan Smith, ignoring any side tracks. The path goes to an unmade road. Continue along this track to come out onto the road by the entrance to Carwinnion Garden. Turn left and follow the road back to the village.

Fill a kilner jar or an empty bottle a third of the way with your picked sloes – make sure you prick them first.
Lunch at The Ferryboat
Add another third of white granulated sugar. Fill the bottle with cheap gin and screw on the cap. Leave in a cool, dry place turning once a week. The longer you leave it the more developed the flavours will be but it should be left for a minimum of 2 months.
Park in the public car park at Helford Passage. Follow the hill down to the Ferryboat Inn. Follow the path to the left of the pub as it winds up the bank with the river on your right hand side. You can follow the path towards the head of the river for as long as you like. On your right hand side are sloe bushes ripe for the picking at this time of year. Walk and pick the fruit to your hearts content before returning to the pub for a well-earned pint. Make sure you go armed with bags or buckets to put your sloes in!

Chef Alex Carlisle, who did some of his training at the Ivy, creates seriously good food weaving together the best of local produce into an imaginative daily specials menu with a modern twist. At the Old Quay Inn we work closely with local producers, farmers and fishermen to buy ingredients that are fresh, of the highest quality and low in food miles. We offer a good selection of fresh Cornish fish and the species we use are not from threatened or depleted fish stocks. The young team provide a warm welcome at all times of the day.

Meals are served 12 - 3pm and 6 - 9pm, seven days a week. We are open for morning coffee with pastries from 10am, afternoon coffee with cake and Cornish cream teas from Easter to September.
