Spirit of the Sea

Falmouth is bursting with beautiful beaches, top-notch attractions, historical sites and maritime heritage all framed by stunning natural scenery and shimmering blue sea.

On the water

Just beachy

Home to the world’s third largest natural deep-water harbour, Falmouth’s maritime legacy is core to its working life. With industries such as boatbuilding, fishing, marine engineering, shipping and watersports - its coastal culture is both economically vibrant and charming to its visitors.

A host of beaches fringe Falmouth, offering everything from sun-kissed shores to high-octane action. From surfing to sailing and sunbathing to snorkelling, everyone can enjoy the area’s varied oceanside activities.

Legend has it Not only do the port and docklands help secure Falmouth’s industrial success, they also represent a rich history which saw kings and famous seafarers stamp their mark on the town. From the Royal Mail packet ships to smugglers and pirates, trading and travel have defined Falmouth’s history for hundreds of years and still continue to sculpt its modern day character.

Falmouth Headland

“Falmouth is a special place and somewhere I’ve enjoyed several times with my own family. The town itself is steeped in history and has stunning views over St Mawes Castle” Ben Fogle for the Sunday Mirror

Attractions aplenty There’s a spectacular array of things to see and do in Falmouth. Built by King Henry VIII, Pendennis Castle and St Mawes Castle proudly guard the estuary while the National Maritime Museum Cornwall honours Falmouth’s heritage. Combined with parks and gardens and a wealth of cafés, restaurants, bars and pubs - not to mention an all-year-round events and festival schedule Falmouth, quite simply, is the place to visit in Cornwall.

“It’s great to be in Falmouth. Outside Padstow it’s my favourite seaside town in Cornwall.” Rick Stein See page 44

Partnership Falmouth Key to Falmouth’s growing success is a series of partnerships in place to ensure operations within the town are smoothly run and constantly evolving. All striving and working closely together to make Falmouth a better place for both its residents and visitors, the dynamic partnership scheme comprises of a number of networks whose sole aim is to support the local economy, people and culture, helping them to continually flourish. The Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID) is a not-for-profit company responsible for delivering a number of innovative projects that aim to improve the trading environment of Falmouth. It is business-led - with over 400 businesses involved, who constantly deliver initiatives such as destination marketing, new events and festivals, PR campaigns, public realm improvements and business training programmes. Established in 1866, The Port of Falmouth Chamber of Commerce is a group of local business people from a range of sectors whose aim is to promote the port and town for the benefit of the members and wider community. The Falmouth Town Forum is an ideas and consultation group whose purpose is to assist the Town Council and other agencies in developing Falmouth for the benefit of its residents, students and businesses. The apolitical Forum unites representatives of a variety of groups and organisations in the town from the commercial, charitable and statutory sectors. Recent work includes the long-term development of Falmouth, the Falmouth and Penryn Community Plan, greater waterside access, traffic management, tourism development, the Business Improvement District and youth issues. Formed in 1974, Falmouth Town Council currently comprises sixteen elected Councillors to help undertake a variety of local services from planning and highways to shopmobility, parks and gardens, Community Grant Awards and Christmas lighting. Involved in a mass of projects, see page 98 for more info. Fal River Cornwall is a destination marketing partnership with over 100 members, it promotes the Fal River as Cornwall’s most popular visitor destination with Falmouth and its ferry hub at the heart of the area. The Town Management service is provided by Falmouth Town Council

Alongside the usual town management functions of business and resident support and communication it leads many of the key events in the Falmouth calendar such as, Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week, Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival and the Christmas Events, as well as supporting one off’ independent festivals and leading the way with planning for events of significant importance, such as the Olympic Torch relay event through Falmouth in 2012. Recognised as providers of ‘best practice’ traffic management and event guidance it organises and administers a professional, proactive approach to ensure events are well run and enjoyable for all. www.falmouth.co.uk T: 01326 313553 Email: ruth@falmouth.co.uk

Spirit of the Sea Falmouth is synonymous with the sea. A centre of enterprise and communication, its historical roots are bound to its magnificent harbour and maritime culture. More than a mere fishing port, Falmouth boasts the third largest natural deepwater harbour in the world. It is flanked by Pendennis & St Mawes Castles, King Henry VIII’ s impenetrable forts built to protect the harbour from French and Spanish fleets. With a history of traders from Greece, Rome and Gaul visiting over 2,000 years ago, Falmouth has continued to capitalise on its trading town status throughout every historical age. Charles II’s royal charter in 1661 made Falmouth an official town, while in 1688 - with Sir Water Raleigh’s vision combined with the sponsorship of the Killigrew family - Falmouth’s port was born. It became the Royal Mail’s Packet Station where Custom House Quay dispatched dozens of packet ships, rapidly expanding its destinations to include the West Indies and North and South America which, in

turn, surpassed London’s shipping activity in tonnage terms. Diversifying its workforce and expertise across all sectors - from boat building to fishing - the inception of the Falmouth Docks and railway dramatically increased the town’s burgeoning prosperity and reputation. With transport came tourism, as visitors began to admire the area’s distinct and diverse offerings and spectacular scenery. Today, modern developments see Falmouth as a University town with a vibrant student population, a commercial port and industrial entity, popular holiday destination and internationally renowned cultural and artistic centre. A place of poise, Falmouth’s relationship with the ocean and its people continues to strike a balance between industrial innovation and the surrounding natural environment. With an ever-growing visitor economy resulting in a wealth of attractions, gardens and innovative transport solutions

such as Fal River Links and the Fal Mussel Card, this Cornish harbour town continues to adapt to the needs and challenges of its people, both on a local and global scale, whilst capturing the imagination of everyone who visits.

Falmouth has limited long stay parking and for this reason the Park & Float/ Ride was established in 2003. Visitors to the town can now reduce congestion and pollution by using the 500 space car park on the outskirts of town at Ponsharden. What better way to arrive in Falmouth than aboard a classic wooden ferry? After parking at Ponsharden take a leisurely trip down the Penryn River to Falmouth’s Custom House Quay. Ferries depart from the car park every 20 minutes. Falmouth Rd, Ponsharden,TR10 8AD 01326 319417 www.falriver.co.uk/float www.trebah-garden.co.uk

Holiday, Touring & Camping Parks and Holiday Villages are assessed on the standards they provide to visitors in the following areas: cleanliness, facilities, groundsmanship, pitches, play areas and leisure facilities (where provided). AA star ratings (from 1 to 5) are awarded for the standard of quality for hotels and guest accommodation. In addition to the star rating, the AA gives a merit score as a percentage, which enables the visitor to compare the establishments with the same number of stars. Campsites & Caravan Parks are rated from 1 to 5 Pennants dependent on the range and quality of facilities provided. The AA Pennant rating is only based on the touring pitches and facilities at campsites and caravan parks, and do not cover static caravans or chalets. Packed with cookery demonstrations by leading local chefs, oysters, seafood, wine and local ale, children’s shell painting, sea shanties, a town parade, and live music, an oyster shucking competition, a Falmouth Working Boat race and marquees brimming with Cornish produce; the festival is a must for all oyster, seafood and maritime heritage enthusiasts! www.falmouthoysterfestival.co.uk

The purpose of this guide is to provide a central source of information about Falmouth for residents and visitors alike, so that everyone can take advantage of all that our historic and dynamic town has to offer. This is an exciting time for our Town. We have just celebrated the 350th Anniversary of the granting of the Town’s Royal Charter to Falmouth by King Charles II. During the celebrations Falmouth was in contact with twelve other Falmouth’s around the world. The Oyster Festival in October has become a highlight in the annual calendar of events in both Cornwall and nationally. Our

parks and gardens are always nominated in the Awards at Britain in Bloom and the four main beaches from the Castle to Maenporth are some of the cleanest in the county. The dredging in the channel will enable cruise ships of a larger tonnage to visit the Town and will also secure the future of the Docks. Should you require further information on local matters please do not hesitate to contact the Town Clerk or myself on 01326 315559 or the Town Manager on 01326 313553. We are here to help. Residents and visitors are welcome to visit the historic Council Chamber on the Moor. Access is usually available during Town Council office hours and an appointment is not always necessary.
