THE FAL RIVER FESTIVAL The Festival is all about celebrating life on the Fal River in Cornwall. The 10 day festival includes a wide range of events from music and drama, the arts and heritage to swimming, rowing races and walking. The festival, established in 2006, is a celebration of life on the river and is a chance to really embrace the places, people, history and cultures that connect everybody to this very Cornish river. These 10 fantastic days of celebration will offer something for everyone and is a real chance to engage with life on the river while discovering some of its fascinating history. Sophie explores textures through multimedia. She is intrigued by surfaces, the way they change and decay over a period of time and the memories and stories they can hide and reveal. Cracks, chips, spray paint, rust and algae all play an important part in inspiring her work..

Working mainly in oils, I paint figurative and semiabstract landscapes of Cornwall and Norfolk. I am a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) and so a proportion of my work is concerned with the natural world, especially birds.

Garden designs and site-specific installations by commission. Paintings for sale. Natural landscapes are the starting point of my work and plants always play a central role. My approach to designing gardens is a combination of ‘painting with plants’ and ‘celebrating seasonal change’.

Current work represents an exploration of our physical and spiritual relationship to landscape. Images arise through constant observation and abstraction of the changing patterns of nature, at times utilizing the Active Imagination (Jung) to capture a sense of both outer and inner worlds.

My acrylics/prints can be found in private collections across the world and in UK galleries. They depict messages of freedom, openness, adventure and possibility. I am the creator of Visual Awareness Ltd, an art event company. I love the sparkle in a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes when they see their talent..

Contemporary design, unique items. Fused glass panels for walls and windows, kiln formed free standing shapes, wall lights and dishes. Some with hand drawn, figurative images embedded between layers, while others are abstract compositions of colours, texture and form.

My porcelain and stoneware ceramics are inspired by the sea and landscape of Cornwall on my daily walks. I apply oxides, sand, stones, paint, glass and wire to the surfaces to create texture and colour, multifiring them to erode and expose layers. My studio is on my smallholding with views of Restronguet Creek.

My work is thrown stoneware, using coloured clays and neutral glazes. I also make raku fired pieces, using copper glazes and washes.

Stoneware ceramic pots inspired by the Cornish land and seascape are made from clay coloured with oxides and locally dug clay. Bases are thrown with coils added then pinched, scraped and burnished to give a tactile surface. Prices from £38–£500.

Well known Falmouth artist creates unusual and imaginative artwork inspired by nature and personal experiences. Varied techniques help to give a mystical/abstract feel to the work. Art and tea in the house, studio and garden. Originals, prints and cards available at a full range of prices.

My compositions include flora, fauna and human elements in settings created by my own thoughts and imagination. I am a self taught artist. My favoured medium is acrylic which I use as watercolour on a highly textured paper to achieve my desired effects.

Metaxia Chrona is a fine artist whose work encompasses drawing, painting, wall painting and artistic constructions.

In my hand built ceramics I maintain a simplicity and directness of shape, colour and surface throughout the whole process of making. I often burnish my pots several times which enables me to really get to know the characteristics of individual pieces. The drawn decoration also allows a similar intimacy with the form.

I enjoy making images and objects where I can assemble collections and invent relationships that prod the imagination, stimulate the vision and provide a vehicle for a continuing engagement with pictorial and sculptural speculation.

I make wall mounted, sculptural poems. I find beauty in the small and discarded, bringing together found things and embedding them in resin. These poems I frame with recycled wood and copper to make them precious and sacred as are our memories and dreams. I also paint and draw the things I find and the places I find them.

For me art is a way to subject thoughts in matters, or reverse to find meanings in substances. My northern background is influencing the work going under the surface, showing the silent and wretched side of life. It’s based on traditional ways of sculpting, casting and authentic use of video and sound.

My practice explores instinctual form in relation to unorthodox surface, the intention being to achieve a chaotic order. I prefer my work to serve a purpose, even if that purpose is not based on a functionality that is obvious in the traditional sense.

My work is colourful and inspired by the natural world. Landscapes and stilllife in all mediums. Work for sale will include cards, paper works framed and unframed, as well as canvases. Prices for originals range from £25–£350. My studio is in a lovely cottage garden.

Art workshops on the village ‘Bowling Green’ which has stunning views over the Fal estuary. From 14.00 - 17.00 we will be providing a series of mini events for all. Aprons/old clothing are recommended as you might get covered! Toddler Art For pre school children to print, paint and draw on a large sheet of paper which will make a banner run by staff from Flushing Toddler Group. Crown Making Make a crown out of recycled scrap material, supplied by Cornwall’s Scrap Store, to wear as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations, particularly at your street party. Animation Workshop Make your own animation with Laura who is a third year student from the University College Falmouth’s animation course. Your drawings/collages etc will be scanned in to make animations that will be screened at our ‘Archive Film Night’ on Wednesday 6th June in the Church Hall. (see details under daily events)

We challenge you to find all the answers to our art trail which will take you around Flushing Village to places you probably don’t know. Spot all the door art which this year has the theme of ‘Queens’, art in villager’s windows and lots more. This is suitable for all ages and you can enter individually or as a family by picking up an entry form from the exhibition in the Village Club. Certificates for the most correct answers. PINOCCHIO

An exhibition of photographs and memorabilia, illustrating the village’s celebration of royal events and meetings with the royal family, will be held in St Peter’s Church. The core of the exhibition will cover the period of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign although previous royal visits and events will also be included. Whilst there we would like you to share your own memories with us and help build our village archive. At the same time visit St Peter’s Church and enjoy the Flower Festival which shares our royal theme.

The ‘cube’ theatre company performing Pinocchio, a new play by Ben Oldfield.

The exhibition will open on Wednesday evening at 7.30pm Followed at 8.30pm by a showing of local archive film in the Church Hall, some of which you may have seen before and some which is new to public viewing.

Clay Point is a private house on Trefusis Road just past the turning space on the way to Flushing Beach. The performance is in the gardens, Flushing’s answer to the Minack!

Live music on the quay featuring the ‘Klezbians’ a newly formed 13 piece band who have recently performed at the Royal Albert Hall. As many of the group have a love of Eastern European folk and gypsy music they have developed Klezmer, the musical tradition of the Ashkenazic Jews of Eastern Europe, adding to it their own modern and youthful twist. As a band there is a plethora of musical possibilities open to them due to the number of instruments they use, including a variety of guitars, “Pots ‘n’ Pans”, an accordion, drums, saxophones, a piano, trumpet, mandolin and a violin. The evening will start with support acts at 20.00 with the Klezbians performing from approximately 21.00. There will be a late evening ferry from Falmouth to Flushing. A music and dance extravaganza by Truro and Penwith College students 10.30am - 4pm

Truro and Penwith College is one of the best colleges in the country for high quality education and training. A Level Music has been part of the curriculum at Truro College since the college first opened in 1993 now there are nine level 2 and 3 post 16 courses and four undergraduate programmes in Classical or Commercial Music, Music or Sound Technology and Jazz. Students are also encouraged to continue their instrumental grade exams in music; this year 18 students will be taking their grade 8. The high standard of the facilities at the college provides the best learning environment and equipment. The many practice rooms allow students to have individual tuition as well as sound proofed rooms to practise in groups.

The programme for the day will include Three Voices, a Flute Choir, Saxophone ensemble, a duet of piano and flute, Dance, Gadjo Guitares and rock and pop from three college bands from music courses at Truro College. Truro and Penwith College can boast that its lecturing staff has a high level of teaching and professional experience in the music industry, including producing their own albums, music for film and TV and always live performance. Truro College has a developing Music Academy which is led by Tom Quirke. Tom has worked with a variety of artists such as Lily Allen, Oasis, and Raphael Ravenscroft and also performed at large

10 Ponsharden Park and Ride

FAL RIVER WALK 9.30am This annual event is organised by the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen. It has been running for several years and has proved a great success, and great fun, for all taking part and for the Charities who have benefitted. The Fal River Walk is part of the Fal River Festival week. Choose between two scenic walks alongside the Fal River from Falmouth to St Mawes, including special boat and ferry crossings and both ending with a cream tea.

The aim of the event is to raise as much money as possible for the chosen charities of Phoenix Stroke Appeal, Marie Curie Care and local Rotary charities. Over the past four years the walk has raised over £60,000 for local charities, so please come and join us to increase that figure again this year. SHORT WALK - 5 MILES (White line) Check in at Ponsharden, Penryn, for departure at 12 noon by boat direct to the Trelissick Gardens’ Pontoon (just down river from King Harry Ferry). From the Pontoon walkers will then take a boat shuttle across the Fal to Turnaware. From Turnaware it’s the same as the Long Walk. TEAM PRIZE: Team entries are welcome, maybe in fancy dress, with a prize of £150 Penrose Outdoors vouchers to be given to the team raising the most sponsorship. NB: between 4 & 6 in a team. INDIVIDUAL PRIZE: Every walker raising £100 will be entered in a prize draw for £100 vouchers sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health .

LONG WALK - 14 MILES (Brown line) Check in at Ponsharden, Penryn, for departures across the Penryn River at 9.30am & 10.00am. Walkers will then head for Mylor, Pandora Inn (boat shuttle across the Restronguet Creek), Feock, North & South Woodland Walks at Trelissick, then to Trelissick Pontoon, (boat shuttle across the Fal to Turnaware), to Messack Farm, St Just in Roseland Church, St Mawes Castle and finish at the St Mawes Memorial Hall. Take a Rodda’s cream tea before returning to Falmouth by ferry.

The aim of the event is to raise as much money as possible for the chosen charities and as a guide each walker should try to raise £100, either by being sponsored or by making a donation. This figure is not compulsory, however it’s in the spirit of the event that each participant makes a contribution to the good causes fund. Hosted by the popular Smugglers at Tolverne, we couldn’t wish for a more picturesque location for our final event. Nestling on the banks of the tranquil Fal, you can reach Tolverne by road or by water. Guests are welcome to moor at their private pontoon, or take the King Harry Ferry from Trelissick by car, bike or on foot.

‘A FATHER FOR MY SON’

Travel back in time with Kathleen Scott, wife of the legendary polar explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, for a female perspective on love and life at the turn of the 20th century. Jenny Coverack has successfully toured ‘A Father For My Son’ in venues from the Isles of Scilly to London - including a recent performance at the Scott Polar Research Institute, 100 years to the day that Scott was at the South Pole. Come along to see this unique and passionate portrayal of Kathleen’s life.
