Fal River Area Guide 2012 - Part 3 - Gardens

Page 1

The gardens of south-west Cornwall are famous for growing plants normally found in more sub-tropical climates; this is thanks to the warm influence of the sea and the gulf-stream. As a consequence palm trees and tree ferns thrive along with many other sub-tropical plants not normally associated with these shores. The moist and mild air also provide ideal conditions for rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias more traditionally associated with Cornwall. The fact that most of the well-known gardens border the sea is therefore no accident and early garden designers took full advantage of the conditions they found here. Many of these gardens are now mature having been planted some 160 years ago and being the early benefactors of the many seeds and plants sent back from plant hunting expeditions in far flung parts of the world.
