Tracey Thomas -Tittley began modeling at a young age, mainly appearing in community fashion shows. In her teens, She furthered her modeling quest appearing in fashion editorials for the Roanoke Times and through retail employers – Miller and Rhodes and Stitches. She enjoyed modeling; however, came to find that fashion intrigued her more. The majority of her young adult career was in retail fashion. She began working at Chess King and went on to Merry-Go-Round. While working for Miller and Rhodes and Stitches, Tracey’s focus was on the fashion. She attended buyer’s events, managed departmental displays and fashion consulting. As Tracey found her path, her career changed; however, her passion for fashion never waned. She continues to have an individual style and challenge the norm. Many are familiar with her “ShoeWoo”… a never ending LOVE for footwear and handbags. In 2004, Tracey was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Also known simply as Lupus, SLE is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in many parts of the body. Symptoms vary between people and may be mild to severe. In the early learning stages, In 2015, came the diagnosis of Small B-cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. B-cell Lymphomas develop more frequently in older adults and in immunocompromised individuals. As a generalization, indolent lymphomas respond to treatment and are kept under control (in remission) with long-term survival of many years, but are not cured. Life came to a drastic halt, as she endured over two years of aggressive chemotherapy; however, today, Tracey is happily in remission. She experienced many physical changes, throughout both illnesses, which caused self- esteem issues and her to question fashion. She felt fashion was no longer her friend because her individuality was challenged. Though it took some time to bounce back, Tracey again found her fashion sense to be as robust as ever. She is quoted saying “Fashion gives me life”. Some say Tracey has an addiction, but when you ask her, she will always respond “I don’t have an addiction, I have a trade”. photo credit: Tisarazzi Photography

Androgynous Fashion as More Than a Trend By Elijah Beaufort

These last few years in pop culture have been a complete dismantling of anything that could be considered stereotypical. Fashion is not excluded from this, as many stores and large brands are beginning to see gender stereotypes do not matter as much in fashion. Besides general shapes, like curves or accentuation of masculine features, nothing else really matters. Colors and patterns that were once considered feminine are now unisex. Young people these days care more about overall style more than anything. As long as a clothing item fits into a particular “aesthetic,” what gender it was originally sized in has become irrelevant. Many of the fears associated with wearing clothes not necessarily marketed toward one’s gender revolve around a lot of societal homophobia, where cross-dressing is considered a big no-no. Yet at the same time, fashion trends come and go, and much of men’s fashion has transformed over the years out of its roots. Heels were originally worn by men. Pink used to be a masculine color. The 80’s featured long hair. The 90’s was filled with crop tops, short shorts, and fishnets. If anything, the 2010’s is more of a focus on individual styles. Individuality is such a defining factor in one’s personal style. Copying others or having lack of inspiration is not what drives fashion. Being innovative with individual expression is what it’s all about, and sometimes that may not include sticking to a specific selection of available clothing options. This is especially applicable when many find women’s fashion to be trendier, while men’s fashion appears to have more practicality. Combining the two is an assured way to get something truly unique, and it really forces people to showcase their own individual styles. Fashion with a challenge is the best kind of fashion. My personal style stems from a number of different facets of my personality. I like to be extra, and in being extra, my fashion choices often range from pairing multiple statement pieces to wearing things seen on red carpets. I have been adopting this idea of the future of fashion, and when I think of where that is projected to be, it seems at the moment to be comfort chic. Balenciaga and Rick Owens are breaking from their glamorous aesthetic, and focusing more on premium comfort. Athletic brands like Adidas are creating casual statement items, often having the same items for both men and women. Popular retailer H&M has begun partnering with major international fashion brands like Balmain and Kenzo, also keeping their line of offered products pretty consistent between the sexes. The future of fashion is how we choose to express it, whether it be in accordance with or breaking from a mold that consumers were told they must fit based on their gender. This is what excites me most about fashion, and as an aesthetic, futuristic androgyny is what I like to emulate most.

The “Annoít” brand was founded by Tyshaun Brown, to teach and help others to understand that beauty comes from within. The brand name is derived from his disabled sister’s name, Tionna, backwards. Tionna is a Cerebral Palsy (CP) survivor that continues to be an influence daily. Although she is unable to speak, walk, or be independent, she is a beautiful spirit that has taught Tyshaun to be a caregiver, a nurturer, and a provider.
