CHAMBER Control Tech Heating and Air Conditioning 1200 Parkway Drive Zionsville, IN 317-873-3737 ControlTech.biz

Father-son duo Alan and Clay Winters are both Zionsville High School grads and operate Control Tech Heating and Air Conditioning in Zionsville. Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Kerch Creative

Ever since Clay Winters was young, heating, ventilation and air conditioning service has been a part of his life. “I got into the business when I was 14 years old - I was always riding around with my dad in a truck,” says Winters, whose father Alan founded Control Tech Heating and Air Conditioning in 1983. “Basically, both of my parents were in the business, so it was one of those things where HVAC was what we ate, slept and breathed.” Located in Zionsville, Control Tech still prides itself on being a family-owned operation to this day, offering customers a high level of service on a regular basis. Serving Indianapolis and its surrounding communities, the company primarily sticks to residential heating and cooling,

while occasionally venturing into commercial service. Originally a twoman operation, Control Tech now has more than 50 employees, with 40 trucks currently out on the road. According to Winters, quality, education, and personable service has always been at the core of Control Tech. “The whole reason my dad went into business for himself was because he was working for another company, and it was all about volume and numbers,” Winters says. “They were all about finding something wrong on every job, and he didn’t agree with that. Essentially, that’s why he got into business for himself.” Both graduates of Zionsville Community High School, Winters and his father have always chosen to keep the business in Zionsville, simply because it is home.

“The main reason we’ve stayed is because of the community and the people,” Winters says. “It’s a smaller community and isn’t as fast paced. It’s low key, and a good place to raise a family.” When it comes to the services the company offers, Winters says the Control Tech team members know what they’re good at. “If you’re building a home in one of these big neighborhoods that are going up all over Zionsville, we’re probably not going to be the guys installing that equipment, because there are companies who are set up for that, but we basically are the second guy in,” he says. “We typically take over service after the home is 1 year old, then, whenever it’s time for that equipment to be replaced, that’s when we come in.”

With roots firmly planted in Zionsville, Winters aims to make his community proud with the work Control Tech does on a daily basis. “We’re in the community, and I have three children,” Winters says. “I’m going to see our customers in public, so I better do my job. It’s not like we live on the southside and work up here in Zionsville. I’m out and about, and we’re in the community all the time. That’s why it’s important to us. We want people to feel like they’ve got a company that actually cares about them. You’re not just a customer number.”

Historic Charm

Brick Street Inn Stands as Longtime Zionsville Fixture

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Michael Durr

In 1970, Al and Helen Kogan moved into a home located at 175 South Main Street in Zionsville - the site of what is now the Brick Street Inn. The Kogans’ son Drew was in the seventh grade when the family first took residence, and he recalls that when they bought the home, it had seen better days. “It had been a rental and was in bad shape,” Kogan says. “We turned it into a home.” Not only did the structure undergo extensive renovations, but Helen also decked it out with 18th century antiques. The home’s simple elegance landed it in a number of decorating magazines. As a result, it attracted the attention of some big names like Tasha Tudor, an illustrator and author of children’s books, and Liberace, the famous pianist, singer and actor. Both of them toured the stunning home when they visited the area. “It really stood out,” says Kogan, who now

lives next door. “I’m pretty sure we’re the only family around here who has lived on Main Street for 50 years.” After his parents sold the house it sat empty for awhile, then was sold six times according to Kogan. “Everybody had big dreams for the place, but I guess they didn’t work out,” he says. In the 1980s the building became the Brick Street Inn. Acquired by local businessman Bill Fanning in the early 2000s, he completely renovated and expanded it. Today only 10% of the original structure remains. The Brick Street Inn houses the Auberge Restaurant & Bar, which offers Frenchinspired cuisine for brunch and dinner, made from local ingredients. “Prior to the restaurant and bar, there was a linens shop in that space,” says Paul Vezolles, who purchased the inn 10 years ago. “Mr. Fanning’s daughter Colleen ran the shop for years.”

General Manager Abigail Bryant

Vezolles decided to purchase the Brick Street Inn in August of 2010 because he adored the town, Main Street and the village atmosphere. “The village is a destination in and of itself,” he says. “Zionsville is one of the most charming small-town centers you’ll find in central Indiana.” Vezolles appreciates that the boutique inn offers all of the professional services one would expect with a high-end hotel, yet on an intimate scale. It’s also a great location for banquets, weddings and corporate events, as there are two separate meeting rooms - the Chautauqua Room and the William Zion Library that can be combined into a single space. The spaces can accommodate groups of eight to 80 people for private events. “People come to us for weddings, baby showers, family reunions and funerals,” Vezolles says.

Folks are attracted to the Brick Street Inn for a variety of reasons. Some are business travelers who enjoy an alternative to corporate chain hotels. Runners can can wake up in the morning, lace up their shoes and be running nature trails within minutes. Others book the inn for a getaway weekend, to partake in all of the shops and restaurants that are mere steps from the inn. There’s also the pull of nature. “We’re 100 yards from Lions Park and a quarter mile from Elm Street Green,” Vezolles says. “Both will take you down onto the banks of Eagle Creek. There’s also Creekside Nature Park.” Vezolles’ favorite feature of the inn is the patio, which offers abundant shade during the day and festive lighting in the evenings. In addition, the facility offers live music on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, featuring classical guitar, violin, harp, piano, and even hammered dulcimer.

“We pride ourselves on doing a nice mix of performing artists and offering something different than what you find everywhere else,” Vezolles says. The facility experienced very low occupancy for several months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Vezolles has seen a significant increase in occupancy in recent weeks, however. “There’s obsessive-compulsive cleaning, availability of hand sanitizer, physical distancing requirements, and all staff is wearing masks,” says Vezolles, noting that the inn is also operating at reduced capacity to give guests plenty of room. Despite the challenges of this year, Vezolles thoroughly enjoys working in the hospitality industry. “I love the fact that I’m helping people have a good time,” he says. “Our job is to take people out of their normal, humdrum, day-to-day stuff and give

We pride ourselves on doing a nice mix of performing artists and offering something different than what you find everywhere else. them an enjoyable experience - from relaxing on the patio with a glass of rosÊ or enjoying a good meal, to visiting with friends, families or business associates. Vezolles has plans to expand the inn, which would dramatically increase space for private events and meetings as well as the number of rooms and amenities. He hopes to begin the main part of the project during the first half of next year. Brick Street Inn is located at 175 South Main Street in Zionsville. The perfect cleaner for busy lifestyles has come to Zionsville. Although new to the area, Starcrest Cleaners located at 1201 West Oak Street is a multigenerational, family-owned business with locations throughout the Midwest. The Hermes family was looking for a community that shared their vision and values when they decided on Zionsville as the location for their most wide-ranging and innovative facility to date. “We are a third-generation cleaning and laundry business,” says Starcrest CEO, Luke Hermes. “The business began in the 1970s and my father, Leo, launched the Starcrest brand in 1990. We made a conscious decision to grow in the north Indianapolis area three years ago when my operating partner, Bill Wilkins wanted to relocate here in order to be closer to family. We were immediately drawn to Zionsville because the community’s values align with our core vision of providing families more time to spend with each other and pursue their dreams. “We’ve been in the industry for 50 years, and we are always evolving, innovating and pushing the envelope on what we

Starcrest Cleaners offers everything expected from a laundry and dry cleaning business but it has a major feature that sets it apart. Besides its 30-year tradition of same-day service and valet drive through which allows employees to serve patrons right at their car door, they have initiated free, same-day mobile pickup and delivery right to homes in the Zionsville area Monday to Saturday. However, this service is not just for dry cleaning but also specializes in family members personal laundry. “It is a seamless experience due to the integration of online accounts and cell phone texting,” Hermes adds. “Customers set up accounts with an automatic payment method on file, specify pickup and delivery times as well as any special

instructions. Customers receive a text the evening before to remind them their pickup is the next day and give them the opportunity to decline service. We pick up after 8 am and deliver back the same day before 8 pm. Customers are alerted when their laundry has been picked up and delivered as well! “Our Laundry Bins program is priced at $19.95 per bag,” he adds. “One bag holds what would be a weeks’ worth of laundry for one person or about a load and a half in a home washer. We use plant-based, hypoallergenic detergent and temperatures never exceed 120 degrees. Each bag is individually processed by itself. All the returned clothes are cleaner,

Therefore, they are offering 75% off your next order in September (up to $50) with the coupon insert. “We got to know and respect Zionsville through the process of building this store,” Hermes says. “We are excited to earn people’s business by showing how we can serve their dry cleaning and laundry needs better. ZIONSVILLE FARMERS’ MARKET THRIVING DESPITE COVID-19 DELAY Writer / Shelly Sack Photography Provided

Despite a late start and a new location, the Zionsville Farmers’ Market has been a success in its 23rd season. The new location at the Town Hall parking lot on Oak Street was necessary because of the previous site’s proximity to the old PNC building, which was demolished as part of Zionsville’s Gateway Development project, according to Market Organizer Kristin Nester. Nester says procedural changes due to the coronavirus pandemic caused the market to begin in June, instead of the usual endof-May start time. “We had some logistics to work out, that’s for sure,” she says. Market leaders were forced to make some

pandemic-related adjustments in the way the market operates. Visitors are required to wear masks, maintain social distancing and follow the suggested traffic flow. Nester says that while visitors can look at the items each vendor offers, each has to point out desired selections, which the vendors will then bag and hand to customers. Live music and other special market activities have been put on hold for the year, and this season is also pet-free. Nester says the relocation also brought a slightly noticeable change in visitors, with more people coming from Brownsburg and Lebanon. She has heard a bit of disappointment voiced about the relocation from the village-centered locale, but says the move couldn’t be helped. Next year’s location is still to be determined.

The market has managed to thrive despite these setbacks, and Nester is happy to report that the public is walking the aisles lined with well-stocked vendors once again. The selection is varied, with something to make the whole family happy, such as gluten-free goodies, specialty coffees, houseplants, candles and honey, as well as the ever-popular produce, eggs and meat. Produce vendors are gearing up for the fall crop of lettuce, carrots, snow peas, and the standard symbol of harvest time - pumpkins. Vendors such as Little by Little Farm will have free-range turkeys available to preorder for Thanksgiving feasts, according to Owner Rob Pinder. Pinder and his wife Stephanie have shared their crops for the past three years, and he says people in the community tend to shop local because they appreciate

knowing where their food comes from. The market will operate on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. through September 26. For those who find it more convenient, Nester says preordering is a great option. Customers can browse the market website and simply pick up items during market time. Whether it’s the few remaining Saturdays left or something to remember for next year, Nester says the market can always benefit from volunteers. Tasks include greeting visitors and answering questions, placing signs to direct traffic, and selling t-shirts. To learn more about vendors, directions or volunteering, visit zionsvillefarmersmarket.org. Email Nester at farmersmarketzionsville@gmail.com with questions or for more information.

COFFEE WITH A

PURPOSE Julian Coffee Roasters Still Serving Purpose-Driven Coffee More Than 15 Years Later

Writer / Jamie Hergott Photographer / Amy Payne

scratch on the west side of Indianapolis while working at Medtronic.

Ken Julian, founder and CEO of Julian Coffee Roasters in Zionsville, has one central goal for his coffee business - to change the world.

Not long after he started the roastery, Julian and his wife Lorrie purchased Eagle Creek Coffee Company in 2006. The cafe, a high-volume establishment in downtown Zionsville, helped the roastery “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit,” flourish and allowed Julian to officially Julian says. leave the medical field. Julian worked in medical sales for eighteen years, and while he enjoyed it, he wanted something to call his own. A self-proclaimed foodie and coffee connoisseur, he explored options related to those interests. He opted for the coffee business, starting Julian Coffee Roasters in 2004 from

The couple also operated the cafe at Traders Point Christian Church from 2007 to 2017. In 2007, Julian also opened an Eagle Creek location in the Fort Harrison area. While operating the cafe was fun, it was hard work. Julian closed the east-

side location in 2009, and sold Eagle Creek Zionsville in 2012. In early 2012, he moved the roastery to a Zionsville business suite that includes all of his roasters, a production facility and a storage area. Since then, Julian has expanded into two other suites, now filling 6,000 square feet with two state-of-the-art Loring coffee roasters, a Brew Bomb cold-brew maker, and plenty of coffee. Julian’s vision for his business has changed through the years. His goal as a young man was to be successful and make as much money as possible. After joining Traders Point Christian Church and becoming more involved with his family,

globally became huge for us.”

he took his first mission trip to Panama twelve years ago.

He started donating coffee locally to Wheeler Mission, and has done so for years.

To say the trip changed his life’s trajectory is an understatement. “It was eye opening,” Julian says. “It really opened up my own heart as far as wanting to help others.” Julian and his fellow missionaries worked with an indigenous tribe on a coffee plantation. They helped provide clothing, education and health care for impoverished locals. Julian was so moved by his trip that he insisted on bringing his wife and young children back the very next year. “It was a good moment for us as a family,” Julian says. “It helped change their perspective, and made them very compassionate and giving. We immediately started supporting the mission through our church cafe. As we grew, the idea of giving back locally and

With a heart for other nations, Julian also began supporting the Micah Project, a nonprofit organization in Honduras. His business also supports Africa Outreach USA and Global Game Changers. Julian says the heart behind his business is what sets him apart as a roaster. “The difference is the fact that we are giving back,” Julian says. “That’s our heart and our purpose. We share our success with others, both locally and globally.” Julian Coffee Roasters, a purveyor of USDA certified organic products, provides wholesale coffee to many coffee shops, several colleges, and retailers like Sam’s Club and Costco.

The coronavirus crisis increased the company’s online orders significantly, but many of Julian’s accounts, particularly colleges, stopped completely. Many coffee shops without drive-through services shut down as well, driving Julian’s sales down to 40% of what they normally are, and forcing him to lay off four people. “We have since brought everyone back on,” Julian says. “We made it through the worst. My goal is to definitely continue to grow, finding additional retail opportunities and launching our canned cold brew in the next few months. We’ll keep being as involved as we can in the community.” Julian Coffee Roasters won the award for America’s Best Cold Brew Nitro at a 2019 Coffee Fest event. They also won a U.S. and Canada roasting competition eight years ago that offered the winner a tour of coffee-growing regions in India.

THE DIFFERENCE IS THE FACT THAT WE ARE GIVING BACK. THAT’S OUR HEART AND OUR PURPOSE. WE SHARE OUR SUCCESS WITH OTHERS, BOTH LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY.

This trip was right up Julian’s alley, both as a coffee roaster and as a man passionate about global causes.

“We do direct trade whenever we can,” Julian says. “We have coffee from all around the world, and we are always bringing in new coffees.” Business remains steady, and Julian is always on the lookout for more opportunities to have an impact. “Ultimately, when you pass away it’s not about how much coffee you sell,” Julian says. “It’s about your impact locally and globally. That’s our heart and our purpose.” Julian Coffee Roasters is located 10830 Bennett Parkway in Zionsville. For more information and to place an order, visit juliancoffee.com or call 317-247-4208.

WISH-TV Personality Dick Wolfsie Retires After Nearly 40 Years on Indianapolis TV Eric Holcomb and a declaration from the mayor’s office declaring it “Dick Wolfsie Day,” in the city. Even the Indianapolis Colts got in on the accolades and gifted him with a special No. 8 jersey for broadcasting excellence.

Writer / Shelly Sack Photographer / Eli Beaverson

Longtime television personality Dick Wolfsie seems pretty content on a comfortable August afternoon in Geist relaxing on his back porch. From his raised perch, he can keep an eye on the flowers, birds, squirrels and even “Rocky,” the raccoon who pops out from the treeline from time to time begging for grapes Wolfsie sneaks behind his wife’s back. Aaah. The life of a recent retiree who has more than earned his time to sit back and enjoy whatever comes next. His official last day was July 30, from WISH-TV channel 8, where he had told other people’s stories for the past 30 years. His former colleagues prepared a half-hour special recounting some of his memorable guests (Richard Simmons anyone?). The station passed along a letter from Gov.

He booked his nearly 3,000 segments personally and was known as a storyteller. He was always out in the community and his stories ranged from hilarious to controversial to educational to serious topics. On-air hair transplant? Check. His beloved beagle Barney barking up a storm? Check. Organ donor families and recipients meeting live on air? Check.

“Over the summer, I realized I wanted to go out on my own terms. I thought I’d just fade away,” Wolfsie says of his surprise to have his colleagues recognize him and his life’s work. Wolfsie had been a mainstay on “What a thrill. It was great.” Indianapolis-area stations since the mid1980s. “My whole career was not being fired, just losing jobs,” he says. With a little time on his hands, he found himself strolling around newly constructed Union Station and the idea of a morning show took root. Not one to dawdle with an idea, Wolfsie made an agreement with Channel 13 (WTHR) and his mornings from 9-10 o’clock were full for the next five years. He proudly recalls standing up pretty well against the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Phil Donahue. “I was proud of it and still am,” he says. “With our staff of three versus theirs of 20 or 30, we produced a show with interesting guests and topics.” When he lost the show in 1990, it was Channel 8 that came to him in the name of former News Director Lee Jiles. “Lee called and said, ‘I have a crazy idea and I think you’d be perfect for it. Go out from 5-7 a.m. and do reports.’ I obviously took the job, but at the age of 44, I thought, ‘If I’m still doing this when I’m 50, shoot me.’ And I did it until I was 73. My skill — I knew how to find good stuff,” Wolfsie says. In the early part of his pre-television career, Wolfie earned his master’s in American literature from George Washington University and taught at his former high school in New Rochelle, N.Y. for nine years. His first television gig was in Columbus, Ohio, where he was recognized with an Emmy for best host in the Midwest. His show was early to the game when cable television boxes could allow viewers to interact with the programming by providing their opinions. He went on to audition for Good Morning New York, which he says was beyond his experience level. His replacement? Regis Philbin. Then on to Boston and Chicago doing short-term hosting before making Indianapolis his and Mary Ellen’s home. The couple have a grown son Brett. Throughout his career, he has received dozens of honors, including a second Emmy and a Casper award. atZionsville.com / SEPTEMBER 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 21

The Comeback Kid, who managed to stay on television for nearly four decades and written 12 books, may have retired but has plans to keep his side gig as a syndicated humor columnist. As he sits on his porch, Wolfsie instantly names Steve Allen as his hero, when asked about memorable interviews. Allen is remembered as co-creator and the first host of The Tonight Show, but was also a musician, actor, radio host and author. Ever the humorist himself, Wolfsie says he recently stumbled upon a third-grade report card where the teacher comments, “He doesn’t shut up, tries to make people laugh and I’m concerned about his future.” As far as what’s next? “I don’t know. And I’m okay with that,” he says.
