COUNTY CARING Community Foundation of Boone County Helps Locally in Diverse Ways Writer / Shelly Sack Photography Provided

In 1991, the Community Foundation of Boone County (CFBC) began with $15,000 in seed money from the Lilly Endowment Inc., and has since become a thriving resource for individuals, organizations and philanthropies throughout the county. The CFBC services the 67,000-plus Boone County residents, and currently helps approximately 100 nonprofits, distributing $1 million in grants and nearly 100 scholarships annually. From animals to the arts, youngsters to seniors, the CFBC provides transport services, food assistance programs, poverty relief, care for local wildlife, arts programs and health care services.

President and CEO Jodi Gietl describes the county as primarily agricultural, but vast and diverse with its location along the Interstate 65 corridor. This year has brought new challenges for the organization, and Gietl vividly remembers March 12, when most of the state began commercial closures in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. Gietl says service providers, working with the health department, county trustees, schools and hospitals, were able to handle distribution to meet the many needs in Boone County. Throughout 16 weeks of closures statewide, the groups provided

11,000-plus meals and personal protective equipment (PPE), and also shuttled groceries and medications for the elderly and cancer patients. “We had a big, grassroots effort to get locally sourced beef and milk into the hands of those who needed it, and I’m so proud,” Gietl says. “Our board said, ‘We’ve fed the county, gotten PPE and addressed

health. What’s the next biggest need?’ In July, the board wanted to protect our most valuable assets - our children.” In July the CFBC announced three $50,000 grants for the Lebanon, Zionsville and Western Boone public school districts. “I thought it was amazing to see the generosity and unity in the board,” Gietl says of the school grants. Gietl says funding is sourced from a portfolio that includes life insurance policies and real estate gifts. “We are flexible and nimble with the things we can turn into funds for the county, and are uniquely equipped to turn it around into cash for the county,” she says. This harvest season saw the implementation of the Gifts of Grain

program, which was championed by Gietl when she took the helm in 2019, and was enthusiastically supported by local farmers. Farmers with stored grain from the prior year can donate that grain to the CFBC, allowing them to give back without giving cash. Gietl says the foundation will hold the grain in an account, to be converted to cash at a later date. With many nonprofit doors closed by mandate due to the pandemic, and many fundraising events cancelled, Gietl says local agencies are in need of support. “Technology and cleaning costs are permanent for 65% of these businesses, and 92% reported lost revenue,” she says. “We want to build alongside their desire to stay afloat.” Additional expenses for PPE and sanitization measures must be absorbed into the already-challenged budgets 6 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2020 / atZionsville.com

of many local organizations. To help with these costs, the CFBC is matching money raised by nonprofits from October through the end of the year, up to $15,000. Recipient businesses applied for the Community Match Grant Program in August, and recipients were announced in September. The list of recipients can be found on the official CFBC website. To apply for future funding, organizations must submit a letter of inquiry to the CFBC, and the CFBC offers tutorial videos on its website regarding the application process. One program many high school seniors look forward to is the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, the winners of which will be announced later this year. The CFBC has nominated two scholars who have demonstrated strong academic performance, graduating in the top 20% of their class. Winners will be awarded up to $900 annually for books

and equipment, in their pursuit of a bachelor’s degree from a public or private university in Indiana. Gietl continues to find new ways to grow in her first year as president and CEO of the CFBC. She is hoping to add a mobile application for the CFBC that can match volunteers with organizations that interest them. “I’m really passionate about civic volunteerism, and matching those who can benefit from the help,” she says.

n step with your life?

Gietl says she was happy to keep endowment funds safe in an uncertain stock market, and a full staff to continue serving county residents and businesses.

PALM DELI Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Amy Payne

Palm Deli, located on Michigan Road in Zionsville, has been a hit with Boone County residents, as well as folks from surrounding counties, for a long time. Co-owner Therese Helmy says she and her family are continuously complimented on their sandwiches. “When we opened Mobil Zionsville over 12 years ago, we started getting a lot of loyal customers right away who have been with us for a long time,” Helmy says. “The food we serve has been a big reason why.

Fresh Dishes Abound at Local Hidden Gem

We have always had the deli in the gas station since we opened, but we officially named it Palm Deli about a year and a half ago to give the deli its own identity.” Helmy says Palm Deli’s co-owner, her brother Abe Abrahim, prepares fresh and delicious food that keeps people coming back for more. “Abe has a passion for working in the kitchen and making food that we receive many compliments on all the time,” Helmy says. “We have even had radio deejays and radio talk show hosts talking about how good the food is.” 8 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2020 / atZionsville.com

Helmy says Palm Deli’s signature gyros are the hottest item at the deli. “They are really moist and juicy,” Helmy says. “They are my personal favorite. We use high-quality, premium meat. Customers can pick the vegetables they want on it. We drizzle the sandwiches with our special tzatziki sauce, and we can put your gyro on pita bread or in a tortilla wrap.” The koftas are also a big hit. “Koftas are like an Egyptian version of a hamburger,” Helmy says. “We use fresh

ground beef. It’s fantastic. Our baba ghanoush is also excellent. It’s like an egg plant.” Helmy says her deluxe sandwiches are also popular. “We have Philly steak and cheese, and Italian roast beef sandwiches, among many other choices,” Helmy says. “We get a lot of compliments on our pizzas and gyro salads as well. We also serve an excellent breakfast and great smoothies, which are great on a hot day.” Helmy is relieved to be fully open again after coronavirus-related restrictions on local businesses began to lift. “That wasn’t an easy time for anyone,” Helmy says. “The nice thing is that people have really been coming back. Business has been very good and steady again. It’s been so nice to see all the friendly faces again.” Helmy says the Zionsville community has been supportive since the business opened. “Before we opened over 12 years ago, we prayed that we would find an ideal location for our business,” Helmy says. “We not only found an excellent location, we were also blessed to meet such sweet, kind and warm people from both the Zionsville community and other nearby neighborhoods. We encourage anyone who has not been here to please visit us soon.” Palm Deli is located at 10400 North Michigan Road in Zionsville. The Lemon Bar Is Set to Reopen on Black Friday 10 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2020 / atZionsville.com

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne

Towards the end of May, Kate Drury, owner of The Lemon Bar, had to make the gut-wrenching decision to temporarily close her restaurant due to the coronavirus pandemic. Though she briefly reopened for carry-out, with all of the ongoing changes in restrictions regarding occupancy, she was forced to make some tough choices. One reason customers love The Lemon Bar is the intimate atmosphere. It’s a cozy restaurant in a relatively small space, and having to space tables far apart and figuring out the logistics for safe pickup orders was stressful. “I made the call to close based on the company as a whole, and the safety given the size of the space,” says Drury, who also owns The Flying Cupcake.

Folks also enjoy having drinks and desserts there on weekend evenings. After six months of being closed, Drury feels the time around the holidays is appropriate to reopen - Black Friday, to be exact. The Lemon Bar looks a little different now. For instance, tables are set 6’ to 8’ apart. “Before, those tables were crammed in there and that’s obviously not going to be the situation now,” Drury says. The back room, which normally holds private parties, is not available for rent as Drury is using that space for additional seating. Though she has fielded quite a few calls from people asking about tentatively reserving it for showers and other parties, she’s had to say no.

Across all of her stores, Drury had to lay off The menu will be smaller because Drury 58 people whom she considered family. doesn’t want to have more than two people in the tiny kitchen at once, whereas the “It was the worst day I ever had at work,” restaurant previously had three or four. In addition, they will continue offering takeout, online ordering and DoorDash. Drury is thankful to her empathetic patrons who recognize that times are tough in the food service industry, and have stepped up their tipping and purchased gift cards. “Our customers are amazing,” Drury says. “When we switched to just carry-out, we had tons of orders and I know some of them were doing it to make sure we stayed afloat.” When Drury and her staff were forced to offer takeout exclusively, customers weren’t getting the benefit of the great atmosphere, and Drury appreciates their loyalty. Drury recognizes that when it comes to dining out, the biggest factor is making sure customers feel safe. “We will iron out how we do our service to determine if customers will come to the counter, or if waitstaff will go to the tables,” she says. “We’ll make sure customers are directed in a safe way.” Initially the eatery will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays, and stay

that course until spring when they will reevaluate. Drury is happy that the reopening coincides with the holidays, during which she typically goes all-out with holiday decor. She won’t put up as many decorations this year since they can take up valuable social distancing space. At the same time, decorative holiday trees can act as dividers between tables. Drury, who has been a small-business owner for 22 years, says that while she jokes around a lot, she has never taken anything about her business lightly. She’s made it through some tough times, including the recession in 2008 and 2009. This year, however, has taught her to loosen the reins a bit and recognize that some things are outside of her control. “What has happened this year, there is nothing I could have done about it so I’m at peace with it,” says Drury, who admits

the ordeal has been stressful. For instance, she says laying off staff members was extremely painful. Some of them still came in without pay to help, which touched her. “We’re like a family, and we’ll keep plugging away,” Drury says. “I’ll be okay. Everyone will be okay. It’s more important that nobody gets sick.” For now, Drury is doing what she does best - winging it. “I feel confident we will make it to the other side,” she says. “There may be more changes to come, but I feel good about our reopening plan.” The Lemon Bar is located at 95 East Pine Street in Zionsville. Zionsville Parks Superintendent Jarod Logsdon 14 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2020 / atZionsville.com

I PUT SOME MILES ON MY SOUL, BUT THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. - JAROD LOGSDONREFERRING TO HIS JOB TRAVELS WESTWARD AND EVENTUALLY BACK TO INDIANA.

Writer / Shelly Sack Photographer / Kelli White

While working for the county parks department in McMinnville, Oregon, Jarod Logsdon spent a lot of time wishing he could be closer to his family in northeast Indiana. Stay-at-home orders due to the coronavirus pandemic made travel challenging, and more than 2,000 miles separated Logsdon, 30, from his family.

PARK

Jarod Logsdon Becomes New Zionsville Parks Superintendent

Logsdon set about looking for an opportunity to expand his professional career in a place where he could be instrumental in growing a parks program, while being closer to family. He has found such a situation as the new superintendent of the Zionsville Parks and Recreation department. “I put some miles on my soul, but there’s no place like home,” says Logsdon, referring to his job travels westward and eventually back to Indiana. Logsdon assumed the role of superintendent for the Parks and Recreation department in October. He graduated from Prairie Heights High School, located in a farming community, before earning his zoology and wildlife management degree from Ball State University. Logsdon’s interest in conservation prompted a move to Texas, where he worked with alligators. Working for a city with a population of 20,000 gave him exposure to all facets of public service work.

“I really fell in love with public service, but then I wanted a more mountainous terrain so I looked to Colorado or Oregon, and Oregon won,” Logsdon says. The experience Logsdon gained along the way has inspired him as he considers opportunities for Zionsville parks. He is excited about the upcoming dog park at Heritage Trail Park, as well as 2021 construction plans for Overley-Worman Park, which will feature a nine-hole disc golf course, mountain bike trails, walking paths, shelter spaces and more. Logsdon’s most recent post was in a 17park system, and he enjoyed working on a regional hiking, biking and horse trail. As he learned more about Zionsville, Logsdon says he was excited that the community is not landlocked, which would require local leaders to strategically find green space within an existing footprint. “My next goal is to create a legacy in my professional career, and I would love to be a part of that in Zionsville,” Logsdon adds. “Recreational opportunities, volunteers, and nature education and programming will get the community invested in being stewards of the land for generations to come, and it’s really exciting.” Logsdon says he is keeping an eye out for a home after he gets familiar with the area, and he is considering Zionsville because he’s an avid biker and would enjoy riding to work. As a bonus, his Indiana move brings him closer to his brother’s family and newborn niece in nearby Anderson.

GREAT GREETINGS Sign Gypsies Brings Joy Through Custom Yard Signs

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Linda Oldiges

Several years ago, Kristie Goehausen and Pauline Badalow spotted some cool yard greetings on a mutual friend’s Facebook page, and reached out to learn more. As it turned out, their friend owned a Sign Gypsies franchise that creates custom yard greetings. Both Goehausen and Badalow were interested in bringing the fun to the Zionsville area, so they decided to partner up.

as it’s not offensive.” Though yard size is a factor, they can adjust greetings to fit a space with various letters and foldable items. They even have silver glitter numbers that stand 4’. “We love those because they’re huge and fun,” Badalow says. “We often use them for big birthdays like 16, 21 and 40.”

Badalow and Goehausen tailor each greeting with the recipient’s hobbies, interests and favorite color. For instance, “We were both drawn to the concept if a person likes reading, shopping or because there was nothing around here like a certain sport, they’ll incorporate the it,” Goehausen says. “We liked the idea of appropriate graphics. bringing that service to the community to create happiness, laughter and fun.” The pair stays rather busy year-round, as there is always something to celebrate. Badalow had always painted birthday In the fall there are back-to-school signs greetings on her windows for her children. followed by Halloween, harvest activities What made it special was the personalized and Thanksgiving. Though Indiana can get aspect. nippy, the ground rarely freezes solid. “I thought, ‘I could bring my window painting to other people through the signs,’” Badalow says. “Parents love to celebrate their kids.” The company makes custom signs for birthdays, back-to-school moments, teacher appreciation, sporting events, graduations, weddings and anniversaries.

“It’s actually more challenging to stick signs into the ground in the summer months when the temperatures are so hot,” says Goehausen, noting that if there has been a dry spell, they will ask clients to water their yards prior to the team’s arrival to soften up the ground. The business can also put up signs indoors for school events and parties.

“We did an engagement that said, ‘She said Like postal carriers, Badalow and yes!’” Badalow says. “We’ve done ‘No more Goehausen are often out setting up signs in chemo’ signs for people who have finished rain, sleet and snow. treatment. We’ll celebrate anything as long

THAT’S OUR MAIN GOAL, TO CONTINUE MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY, WHETHER IT’S A KID HOPPING OFF THE BUS OR A DAD GETTING HOME FROM WORK. “We’re out there every day in all the weather,” Badalow says. Sign Gypsies needs at least one week’s notice to take a job. They haven’t always needed quite that much time, but when COVID-19 hit, demand for their services shot through the roof. “Suddenly no one was able to celebrate anything, certainly not with laser tag and big parties, so instead they celebrated through signs and drive-by parades,” Badalow says. In April the company did 130 signs. In May, it was 183. In contrast, they did 10 signs in January and 17 in February. “We were fortunate to have a business where we were able to work at a social distance,” Goehausen says. “We don’t have to see or talk to anybody, making us the perfect social distancing company.” The pair has been eager to display as many happy greetings as possible, during days when life felt confusing, scary and uncertain for some people. “When the stay-at-home order came out, my sons told me, ‘You’re not essential,’ and I said, ‘We most certainly are - we’re making people smile! That’s essential,’” Badalow says. The company serves Zionsville, Carmel, Westfield, Whitestown, Lebanon and Sheridan, as well as a few zip codes in northern Indianapolis. Goehausen and Badalow love nothing more than making someone’s day with their giant yard greetings. For example, they recently received a text message from a man who was on the fence about ordering a sign for his wife, and at the last minute decided to go for it. “He said we made her cry because it made her feel special,” Goehausen says. Even those who don’t receive signs themselves can enjoy the benefit of a mood boost, since the greetings are displayed in yards for everyone to see. “We’ll be out putting up a sign, and neighbors will walk by and thank us,” Badalow says. “That’s our main goal, to continue making people happy, whether it’s a kid hopping off the bus or a dad getting home from work.” For more information on Sign Gypsies, call 317-825-8125 or visit signgypsies.com.
