JULIE DAVIS VEACH FINDS FULFILLMENT THROUGH ART

dogs in Germany.” As she has moved through her life and career, art has always been a constant. About one year ago, she was able to make art her full-time career. “I just started my art business, Julie Davis Veach Fine Art, a little more than a year ago,” she says. “I have three grown kids that are now out of the house, and I have one little one who started back to school. Now I have the time to do what I’ve wanted to do for a long time. My art is my full-time business even though I still am a full-time mom as well.” Her artwork is primarily boldly colored acrylic pieces that can take a few days to a few weeks.

Zionsville resident Julie Davis Veach has expressed herself through her works of art since she was a small child. “I have been involved in art ever since I was in kindergarten,” Davis Veach says. “I can remember the smell of crayons, and the colors being one of my most vivid memories. I was always involved in something creative. The first time I started selling my artwork was probably around 8 or 10, when I sold drawings of horses and

“My artwork is very expressive and very colorful,” she says. “It’s somewhat impressionistic and abstract. It’s meant to capture a higher vibration. It’s meant to evoke happiness and joy. It’s uplifting, therapeutic and healing for me. That is what I want to give back through my art those feelings of hope, positivity and joy.” She finds inspiration in the world around her. “Honestly, I can get inspiration from anywhere or just life itself, but I’m mostly inspired by nature,” Davis Veach says. “I love nature, plants, animals, gardening and flowers. The beauty of nature is what inspires me. Also, color is a huge part of my artwork - bold colors mostly.” Davis Veach loves living in Zionsville, as it reminds her of her military upbringing. TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 7

“The neighborhood we live in reminds me of growing up,” she says. “I grew up in the military, and all of our communities on military bases were very well-connected, with sidewalks and schools nearby. Everything was pretty relative to the central part of the community. I like that connection and the community aspect.” Davis Veach sells original artwork, prints, commissioned pieces, gift cards, stationery, note cards, yoga mats, holiday ornaments, beach towels, notebooks, stickers and T-shirts. “I did a commissioned piece for a client, and she wanted stationery to go along with it,” she says. “I started branching out into those areas.” Being an artist doesn’t mean Davis Veach sits in her studio all day creating artwork. There is a more significant piece behind the scenes as well. “For me, it’s important to create an awareness that we’re not only artists, but we’re entrepreneurs,” Davis Veach says. “I think that often gets forgotten because people think of the artist in the studio painting. There is so much behindthe-scenes work. We wish we could be creating all day, but we’re trying to make connections, update our websites, figure out the best ways to market our art, calculate sales tax and find grants. We’re running a business as well.” She also notes the wage discrepancy for Indiana artists.

“We have a wealth of talented artisans in Indiana,” Davis Veach says. “However, the average wage for Indiana artists is half the U. S. wage for the rest of the artists in the same field. I want to create awareness around the issue.” However, don’t for a second think she is only out to make money. She also utilizes her art to assist community charities and causes. “Sometimes I will help organizations, donating a piece of art to be used in a silent auction,” Davis Veach says. “Over the past year, I’ve also been working locally with an organization called Watch Us Farm. They help adults with disabilities be able to work and earn a paycheck. Often these individuals are forgotten and there aren’t many resources for them, but they are just as valuable as everyone else in the community. This organization has them creating beautiful tapestries and scarves using a loom. We’re going to work with them on creating pieces that are inspired by my artwork.”

Erin Johnson

DANCE FIT CLUB

FITNESS FACILITY FOCUSES ON WELLNESS AND POSITIVITY Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Mariah Krafft

Johnson was also struggling to find workout classes that spoke to her.

At some point every mom needs a break, no matter how much they love their children. Erin Johnson became a stay-at-home mom after a career as a teacher at Zionsville Middle School.

“I created a mom’s Facebook group asking if anybody wanted to meet up with me,” Johnson says. “I was Zumba certified, and taught Zumba for four years before creating my class called Dance Fit. That first class was only five to 10 people, but it grew from there. Dance Fit with Erin was born. We were dancing but torching a ton of calories.”

“I moved away from Zionsville in 2010 after marrying my Army husband, Kenny,” Johnson says. “We moved back here in 2015, and I would drive past the middle school crying because I used to be a teacher there. I was struggling with my identity. I missed serving my community.”

Johnson utilized outdoor space or reserved indoor locations across the city to host classes.

TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 9

“I was driving around with my girls one day looking for outdoor areas during the pandemic,” Johnson says. “We just happened upon an industrial area with a sign that said ‘Now Leasing.’ My daughter told me I should call.” She called, but the space was already rented. Johnson felt it wasn’t meant to be, but then received a call letting her know the space was available. “It’s a great space because it’s two units, and we have garage doors that can open for an open-air concept,” Johnson says. “We rebranded the business this summer to Dance Fit Club when we moved into our very first brick-and-mortar location.” The fitness boutique offers dance fit classes, yoga, children’s classes, family classes and special events. The business even provides child care for those moms who can’t leave their kids at home. “Our original class is dance fit, and it’s like a party,” says Johnson, a certified Zumba instructor. “Some of the classes use weights, so we’ll work with those in between songs. Now that we have all this space, we could branch out with our classes.”

Johnson’s infectious enthusiasm for fitness keeps her clients coming back. “We have a couple of quotes on the wall here,” Johnson says. “They sum up what we’re about here. We work out because we love our bodies, not because we hate them. We try to ingrain in everyone that you’re enough - right now, the way you are. When you walk in our doors, we’re not here to change you. We’re here for mental clarity, friendship and community. The other thing we have written on the wall is, ‘You are worth it.’ ” Johnson wants her clients to experience a mind shift when it comes to weight and exercise. “Life isn’t just about a number on a scale or your pant size,” Johnson says. “As women, we tend to beat ourselves up so much. We don’t want anyone to feel like they’re only worthy when they hit a certain number on a scale.” Dance Fit Club is located at 10830 Bennett Parkway, Suite B & C in Zionsville. For more information, call 317-344-3184 or visit instabio.cc/dancefitclubindy.

HEALING HORSES MORNING DOVE THERAPEUTIC RIDING OFFERS EQUINE-ASSISTED SERVICES

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Mariah Krafft

Twenty years ago, Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding, Inc. was born. A nonprofit organization offering equineassisted services to child, adolescent and adult participants with physical, cognitive, behavioral and/or emotional disabilities, Morning Dove Therapeutic began on a family farm when a neighbor’s child with a disability began riding in the family’s backyard. “Over time more riders joined, and for the first decade the organization was operated out of different people’s family farms before they obtained their own facility,” says Bailee Reynolds, development director. or parents. Children come because families are seeking fun alternative therapy. “Kids may not even know they’re in therapy, but we’re working on certain things that will help them progress,” Reynolds says. Unfortunately, therapeutic riding isn’t recognized as a therapy for insurance purposes, and the staff hopes that will change in the future. They do, however, lower their costs significantly to make it affordable for families. Morning Dove partners with the VA Domiciliary, a homeless veteran center on the east side, to allow veterans to learn about and connect with horses. They offer the same type of program for Teen Challenge, an at-risk group in Lebanon. One popular exercise is called “getting your horse in the box.” The handler has to gain the horse’s trust, and without a lead rope or a halter persuade the horse to stand in a box that is on the ground. “You have to think of ways to communicate with the horse to get them to do what you want, without being overpowering,” Reynolds says. “There’s a lot of frustration and anger that might come out because it’s not an easy task to calm yourself and figure out how to best communicate.” traumatic brain injury or have cerebral palsy. for the riders, but also for the parents who have that hour per week to read a book, take a walk and decompress while their child is getting instruction. As such, the lesson serves to re-energize both the student and the parent. Though they love the current space, the staff is outgrowing it and plans to build on a piece of property in Whitestown in the next few years, which will provide more room and hopefully more horses. There are other therapeutic riding centers in central Indiana, but none as close to Indianapolis, which makes partnering with inner-city youth easier. For instance, this fall they’ll start a program called Lead Changes with Wayne Township students. “It’s great for those kids who have never been on a farm or near livestock,” Reynolds says. “They learn what it is to care for an animal.” The staff is currently trying to get more visibility in the community. For instance, they have a program called Sidekicks, for which they take two miniature horses into the community to assisted-living facilities, nursing homes, schools and hospitals, to allow folks to pet them, groom them and feed them treats. “People really light up when they see Duke and Shelby, who are 19-year-old brother and sister,” Reynolds says. “We want people to know we exist. I feel like we’re this hidden gem no one knows about.” Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding is located at 7444 West 96th Street in Zionsville. LOCAL RESIDENT STEPHANIE KELLEY TAKES A NONTRADITIONAL CAREER PATH Steph Kelley

Writer / Megan Arszman Photographer / Amy Payne

Steph Kelley has never been a traditionalist, given her career path and her overall way of thinking. In fact, one might say she tends to go against the grain. This is why she named her business AgainstTheGrain Woodworking, as it describes how she and her husband Shawn have chosen to live their lives. As a woman who owns her own business in a field that is typically male dominated, she’s doing it in her own way and thriving. “My husband and I like to do things a little different, so I wanted my business to showcase that,” she says. It all started with having to rebuild a deck at their Noblesville home. After gathering a few price estimates that seemed rather expensive, Steph told her husband it was a project they could do on their own. However, they had no tools. With the

help of her parents, who came in from Pennsylvania, the family rebuilt the deck in one weekend. That lit a spark for Steph. “One night I was on Pinterest and saw farm tables, and I thought they looked pretty interesting,” she says. Shawn purchased what Steph calls the best gift ever - a miter saw. A little while later, he returned home to find a farm table built in their garage. With the help of YouTube videos, internet research, and trial and error, Steph taught herself woodworking. Now, that single miter saw is joined with saws of every type imaginable filling up their garage, which has been transformed into Steph’s woodshop. In 2019 Steph discovered live-edge woodworking, where the natural edge of the wood is incorporated into the design of a piece of furniture or other wooden item. An offshoot of live-edge woodworking is the process of adding epoxy resin to the natural holes and cracks 20 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com
