THE VILLAGE ANTIQUE MALL ZIONSVILLE ANTIQUE SHOP OFFERS PATRONS A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE

Julie Neal Wilson, Owner Marina Bedell, and Donna Cook

Writer / Trisha Turner Photographer / Ryan Woodall

For those hunting for a specific vintage item or in the mood to browse collectibles, The Village Antique Mall has you covered. Located on Zionsville’s historic Main Street, The Village Antique Mall is 3,000 square feet of what owner Marina Bedell calls “everything from A to Z.” Sports memorabilia, collectibles and handmade items fill the shop’s glass cases of antiques for sale. “It’s just amazing,” Bedell says. “I never know what my vendors are going to want to bring in. That’s the fun part about it.” Case in point — the English pub table that, as Bedell described her shop’s selection recently, had just made its appearance among the wares. Then there is the ’60s-era Pepsi machine she counts as the most unusual item she’s seen a vendor sell. “It’s kind of like walking back through time,” Bedell says. “I hear people say, ‘Oh, my grandma had this,’ and ‘I had that doll when I was a little girl,’ that kind of thing.” Among the other interesting items are artifacts from a fleet of Spanish ships that sank in the 1700s, jewelry made of sterling silver and gemstones, and birdhouses crafted by a Southern Indiana resident as part of therapy for Parkinson’s disease. The birdhouses, Bedell adds, sell so quickly she can barely keep them in stock. The Village Antique Mall’s large selection fills a shop that’s bigger than it appears from the outside. Located next to CinderBox Chimney Services, the building spans half a block and was formerly a grocery store. A resident of the Zionsville area for 30 years, Bedell has been with The Village Antique Mall since she joined as a parttime employee in fall 2010. She’d shopped there prior to becoming an employee, so she wasn’t surprised to discover it was a fun place to work.

IT’S KIND OF LIKE WALKING BACK THROUGH TIME

Owner Marina Bedell

She was surprised, however, when less than a year later she got the opportunity to purchase the shop. Bedell became The Village Antique Mall’s owner in April 2011. She is the shop’s only staff member, working alongside its vendors. Those vendors, like the shop’s customers, come from all over the country. Some call places like California and Illinois home, but many are from Zionsville. The shop has become a required stop for local residents showing out-of-town guests all that Zionsville has to offer. “Even if they don’t buy anything, people tell me, ‘I love your shop and all the stuff in here,’” Bedell says. “And I always tell them I have great vendors. I couldn’t do this without my vendors.” The Village Antique Mall is located at 45 S. Main Street in Zionsville. The shop is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with some special holiday hours. Call Bedell at 317-8733615 or find the shop on Facebook, @ thevillageantiquemall.

ZIONSVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT UNVEILS NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART CPR DEVICES Provided by the Town of Zionsville

The Zionsville Fire Department has unveiled four newly acquired state-of-the-art CPR devices. These devices enable firefighters to mechanically perform CPR on patients. The Lucas 3 chest compression device is designed to provide consistent, high-quality mechanical chest compressions that meet the American Heart Association standards for rate, depth and speed during CPR. The device reduces the burden and risk for firstresponders and allows them to focus on patient care. “It can be a challenge to maintain quality CPR to a cardiac arrest patient manually,” says EMS Division Chief Steve Gilliam. “The device provides quality, consistent

CPR and allows for fewer pauses because of no longer having to switch rescuers.”

A device will be placed on each of ZFD’s three frontline ambulances.

The device allows first-responders to keep CPR going while a patient is being moved.

The fourth device will be placed on the reserve ambulance that often covers special event details such as high school football games.

“Quality CPR cannot be done to a person in a moving ambulance,” Gilliam says. “This device is designed for use while moving the patient so the compressions are maintained no matter the situation.” The four devices cost $73,000. Funding was provided entirely by Zionsville Fire Department revenue from EMS ambulance transportation. During the July 15 Zionsville Town Council meeting, the Council approved an additional appropriation to fund the lifesaving equipment.

According to Division Chief Gilliam, the devices are relatively easy to apply. Last week, all shifts began participating in a review training. Following the training, the devices will be placed on ambulances and ready to use. “We are constantly working towards providing the best care possible. Our EMS Committee has done a tremendous job in ensuring we are ever-improving,” says Fire Chief James VanGorder.

TEEING OFF ON THE COMPETITION ZCHS GOLFER ANNABELLE PANCAKE IS MAKING A NAME FOR HERSELF ON THE GREENS

Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by Ron Wise & Annabelle Pancake

A lifelong dedication to the sport of golf is paying off for Zionsville Community High School senior Annabelle Pancake. This June, Pancake clinched the 97th Indiana Women’s Golf Association State Amateur championship at Kokomo Country Club, finishing strong with a 4-under score of 66 on the last day of the three-round tournament, three shots ahead of Carmel’s Haylin Harris for a total of 208. Pancake birdied holes 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11 in the final round to help position herself as the leader, and sunk a 20-foot putt on 17 for a 3-shot lead. “Everything came together, and I think I did a good job of staying positive and keeping my head in it throughout the rounds,” Pancake says. For Pancake, golf became a passion long before high school. She first had a club put in her hands at two years old, and the following year she competed in the annual Pepsi Little People’s Golf Tournament that hosts boys and girls ages 3 to 18 in Quincy, Illinois. “I do remember that course, but I have no idea what I shot or how a placed,” recalls Pancake with a laugh. “I would go play with my cousins and it was really fun.” The senior continued to participate in summer tournaments as a kid and started to pursue the sport more seriously around age 12 when she began taking lessons from Jon Hoover, current head pro at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus and former coach at Westfield High School. “I got a lot more self-motivated at that point instead of just going and playing for fun,” she says. “Jon helped really get my game started and things took off from there, and I got even more excited about the game.” Success was quick to come when Pancake reached her high school years, 10 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atZionsville.com

GOLF IS SO MUCH ABOUT THE MENTAL as Zionsville clinched the IHSAA State 2017 team championship in the fall of her sophomore year.

around the country.

“I knew a lot of the girls going into my freshman year, and I was hoping for a state title but didn’t know if it would happen,” she says. “That was one of my goals, to win as a team, because I love all of those girls so much and I’m going to be friends with them for probably the rest of my life.” A passion for golf certainly runs in the family. Pancake’s mother Libby, an Indiana High School Golf Hall of Fame inductee, also won the IWGA State Amateur title in 1985, and her aunt Kelli Akers won it five years later. Her father Tony was first-team all-state in 1981 at Seymour High School and went on to work as head pro at courses

“Having such a big golfing family with parents that are really good is a blessing and a curse,” Pancake explains. “It’s good because they can catch the small things and mistakes that I might need to work on, but then they’re also my parents and I’m a teenager and sometimes I don’t want to listen to them. But it’s gotten better over the years and I’ve learned that they know more about golf than I do, and if I want to get better I need to take their advice.” This year Pancake qualified for the 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, which she considered an honor. “It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever qualified for,”

she says. “To get to compete on such a huge stage with some of the best players in the world was really exciting.” Pancake says working specifically on her mental disposition while on the course throughout the past year has led to improvements in all aspects of her game and helped propel her to the state title in June. “Golf is so much about the mental, and I’ve learned this year to be more of my own cheerleader while I’m on the course and just stay positive,” says Pancake, who verbally committed to Clemson University in December. “I’ve always been very hard on myself. I’ve learned that if you have a bad hole you just have to move on and you can’t change the past. All you can do is look forward and try to do better.”

Gallery Director Rhonda Crawshaw & Executive Director Barbara Jennings

40 YEARS OF ART CV ART AND FRAME CELEBRATES FOUR DECADES OF SERVING THE ZIONSVILLE ART COMMUNITY some prints, we’ve evolved into showing some of the world’s best-known artists. I get a lot of positive feedback from the This year, CV Art and Frame is celebrating community and especially with the more 40 years of being a single resource for all recent shows with some very well-known styles of art and picture framing. After what and renowned artists.” initially started as a frame shop, it’s now morphed into a reputable and renowned HISTORY fine art gallery. The Zionsville-based art gallery initially opened as a frame shop in 1979 under the “I hope that the community sees us as an name Corner Vise Gallery and Frame Shop. organization they can be truly proud of,” Jennings and her parents, Percival and says Barbara Jennings, executive director of Carol Chuck, obtained the shop seven years CV Art and Frame. “Even though we started later. She cites her desire to join the gallery quite small as a little frame shop selling because of her love for the art business. Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photographer / Brian Brosmer

“I have a hands-on creative side of me that I thought would be a good fit,” Jennings says. “When I purchased and got involved with the business, it was mainly a frame shop with artwork. So that’s sort of how I got involved with it.” Together, with the help of her parents, they transitioned it from a tiny frame shop into an art gallery representing some of the nation’s most popular artists of the era, including Terry Redlin and Mary Bertrand. It has recently hosted several larger shows, including artwork from Peter Max, Salvador Dali and renowned child prodigy, Alexandra Nechita.

atZionsville.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 13

Over the years, combining conservation techniques and precision workmanship, Jennings built a group of steadfast and loyal clientele — even ones who are states away. With her help, the gallery gained a new level of distinction as a custom picture framing business set at surprisingly affordable prices. In 1997, Jennings decided to expand and opened a few mall galleries in Indianapolis while representing in-demand artist, Thomas Kinkade. As this new endeavor required more of Jenning’s expertise and attention, Corner Vise was taken over by Kim Smith, who had been with the gallery for 10 years. Five years later, when economic challenges pursued, Jennings closed her mall galleries and returned to her role to Corner Vise. The CV Art and Frame that the Zionsville and surrounding communities know today became established when many galleries dwindled during the economic downturn in the early 2000s. Jennings recognized that this downturn left a need for original art and determined it was the right time to rebrand and bring in a fresh new name — CV Art and Frame. “It’s a very proud time for me because even though I didn’t start it 40 years ago, I have been involved for 33 of those 40 years,” Jennings says. “It’s certainly a moment of pride to recognize that we have been able to survive when most businesses don’t even make it through the first couple of years.” 40 YEARS AND COUNTING When reflecting on how CV Art and Frame has been able to survive 40 years, Jennings says it boils down to one word — integrity. “I believe that customers have come to recognize the quality of workmanship and the integrity that the organization has presented them with,” Jennings says. “So, it’s maybe a natural sequence of events to continue to support us. And that has been wonderful.” Jennings also recognizes that the art gallery provides its customers with a special level of expertise that they can’t get from just anywhere. So much so, she has clients that

have moved out-of-state and still send her work because of CV Art and Frame’s expertise and design skills. She also credits CV Art and Frame’s ability to withstand time to being versatile. “As times have changed, so have we,” Jennings says. “We continue to represent or bring in new artists and continue to be relevant. One of the reasons for survival is we’ve been able to evolve and change as times have evolved and changed. The best word there is continuing to be relevant to what people are looking for.” Looking ahead into what the next 40 years might hold, Jennings hopes that people will think of CV Art and Frame when they think of art, as the company is expanding rapidly with original art. Furthermore, Jennings hopes that residents realize the gallery reaches out to artists all over the world. It can manage and please collectors and art lovers alike, right here in Zionsville.

“I would love to be in a position that when somebody thinks, ‘I need art,’ they think of us,” Jennings says. “A lot of times it happens that people don’t think they can find art in Indiana and they wait till they travel to Chicago or New York or LA, that sort of thing. They tend to not recognize that we can find you the exact art that you’re looking for in this town.” A YEAR-LONG CELEBRATION To celebrate its 40-year milestone, CV Art and Frame has hosted events throughout the year. Trips have included a visit to New York City to meet with Peter Max in his studio, specially commissioned artwork of Indianapolis by Nemo, Alexandra Nechita’s RE: IMAGINED tour debuting at CV Art and Frame and Fine Art Trunk Shows featuring a variety of artists and styles. Artists include Robert Finale, Dr. Seuss and a special personality from the Painter of Light, Thomas Kinkade Studios. CV Art and Frame will host Robert Finale on September 21 from 2-5 p.m. “Here it is, we’ve been in this business for 40 years,” Jennings says. “That in itself is something to celebrate.” CV Art and Frame is located at 110 S. Main St. It is open from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on Sundays. For more information about upcoming events or shows, visit them online at cvartandframe.com.

PEMBERTON OF ZIONSVILLE: THE AREA’S LATEST SPOT FOR LUXURY LIVING Nestled in a peaceful, rolling hill setting is Pemberton of Zionsville, the stunning community and host neighborhood of the 2019 First Internet Bank Home-A-Rama. This year’s Home-A-Rama features five, custom-built homes from some of the Indianapolis area’s finest homebuilders. The builders and their teams of suppliers and contractors have worked tirelessly for months, using their expertise to craft spectacular, one-of-a-kind homes that highlight the latest industry trends and showcase each builder’s unique construction and design approach. Sizes, styles and spaces may be different, the love for building exceptional, quality custom homes that go beyond status quo: Executive Homes and Whicker Construction.

EXECUTIVE HOMES

Pete Gray has been mastering his building skills since he was a kid, hammering nails into a board until he couldn’t fit any more nails in it. Gray took his passion for homebuilding and founded Executive Homes in 1995. Twenty-five years later, he continues to focus on providing exceptional quality and unmatched craftsmanship alongside his son and Executive Homes’ Field Superintendent, Patrick Gray. “We’ve never been one to follow trends that come and go. Our team works to create stunning spaces that encapsulate timeless design and people will enjoy for years to come,” Patrick said. “From the bathroom tile to the trim and window spacing, we make sure that no detail is overlooked.” Their Home-A-Rama home is no exception. Featuring six bedrooms and six and a half baths, the home is the largest of the five homes and is designed for family flexibility and multigenerational living. With expansive outdoor entertainment space, as well as a full basement that features a home theatre, bar and more, the home offers ample space to entertain, relax and create a lifetime of memories with loved ones. The stunning concept was carefully crafted with modern and French country elements that emulate a casual, California style look and feel.

WHICKER CONSTRUCTION

For more than two decades, Brad Whicker, President of Whicker Construction, has provided professionalism, integrity and the utmost quality to craft custom homes that embrace natural elements and hold lasting value. “No two homes should ever be the same,” Whicker said. “I enjoy combining rich textures and mixed elements to create exceptional and distinct spaces that are relaxing and have character.” Whicker Construction’s Home-a-Rama home showcases its own personality, filled with unique charm and one-of-a-kind details that guests will not want to miss. The reclaimed wood, stone wall fireplace, exposed hardware details, and soothing, neutral color scheme gives the home a fine craftsmanship feel that welcomes you home. A floating metal staircase takes you to the full basement and provides a subtle industrial touch that guests will love. “As the only ranch featured in this year’s event, we wanted to create a floor plan that was different yet functional and comfortable,” Whicker said. “Our exclusive finishes, interesting materials and bold curb appeal all combine to create an inviting, unforgettable and truly beautiful home.”

“The home is designed around a unique stairway – which is one of my favorite features – allowing the open, main-floor living to seamlessly flow. The large windows surrounding the stairway bring in tons of natural light and connect you with the beautiful and peaceful outdoors,” Gray said. “We put an emphasis on easy, everyday family living throughout the space, which immediately makes you feel right at home.”

These homes are far from cookie-cutter, with exceptional detail, desirable amenities and passion poured into every square inch. Come tour these alluring spaces, learn more about how you can call one of them your own or see how Executive Homes or Whicker Construction can create an exceptional, custom home for you at the 2019 First Internet Bank Home-a-Rama September 19 October 6th.

CITY BARBEQUE OPENS FIRST BOONE COUNTY LOCATION Emily Parish, the Community Involvement Coordinator for City Barbeque, says a lot of positive work is being done to help some City Barbeque recently opened its new local organizations, including Hero Family location in Whitestown in July. Representatives of the new restaurant have already started giving back to the Whitestown and Zionsville communities.

“We have also been working with the Zionsville Little League, Zionsville High School and the Whitestown Police Department,” Parish says. “We’ve had a

good reach into the community, and we have been talking to other organizations.” Parish says non-profit groups select a date for a fundraiser and then they invite their family and friends to eat at City Barbeque. “Customers bring their fundraising flyers when they are ordering food,” Parish says. “We collect the flyers, and 25% of the sales with flyers go directly to the nonprofit organization.”

atZionsville.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 19

Parish noted that church groups, booster clubs, parent-teacher associations, school organizations, sports teams, youth groups and other non-profits are encouraged to look at the fundraising guidelines at citybbq.com and fill out a date request form. “It really is a great way to raise more money for your organization and also enjoy a delicious meal at City Barbeque,” Parish says. “We are really excited to be here.”

POSITIVE FEEDBACK Parish says that the Whitestown and Zionsville communities have been overwhelmingly supportive of the restaurant since its opening.

General Manager Steve White

“This has been a great location,” Parish says. “There was a need for a good barbecue place in this area, and we have heard nothing but good things since we opened. Customers love the food.” Patrons already have their favorites. “The Beef Brisket is really popular,” Parish says. “The ‘More Cowbell’ has also been a big hit. We get a lot of orders for that.” The “More Cowbell,” a reference to a funny Saturday Night Live sketch with Will Ferrell and guest host Christopher Walken, is an award winning-brisket topped with peppers, smoked provolone, onions and creamy horseradish sauce, piled high in Texas toast. “City Barbeque also has popular side dishes that are made from scratch daily,” Parish says. “Every City Barbeque location has three smokers on-site. They are working 24 hours to smoke all of the barbecue. One of the favorite desserts is the Triple Chocolate Cake.” City Barbeque also serves smoked meats such as pulled pork, turkey breast, pulled chicken and sausage. Their features include a chicken breast sandwich on a premium bun, served with a wing, Lo Lo’s Pulled Pork, which is marinated in “swine 20 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atZionsville.com
