MOBILE APP & MURALS TO CONNECT BOONE COUNTY RESIDENTS Writer / Shelly Sack Photography Provided

More than 25,000 households are spread across Boone County’s 423 square miles. In the past 10 years, the population has grown by nearly 10,000 residents to more than 65,000. Re-imagining and building ways to connect the growing population is high on the priority list for the Community Foundation of Boone County (CFBC) following a 2019 survey. A $150,000 leadership grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc, is helping make that vision a reality using two approaches: technology and art. The technology approach is centered around developing a mobile app that will be known as Connect Boone County.

The app provides three levels of reach, including resident volunteer opportunities at county nonprofits, a community calendar, and a donation portal to direct funds to nonprofits. Connect Boone County is in production and is expected to will roll out by the end of the year, according to Jodi Gietl, CFBC president and CEO. A part-time community collaboration coordinator will act as a liaison between the nonprofits and app developer. A version will be available for desktop computer use as well. Plans call for nonprofits to download volunteer opportunities to the app weekly. Residents can then search for opportunities by type of interest or time availability. Nonprofits will update the database constantly with their needs. Gietl envisions 4 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2021 / TownePost.com

volunteer experiences such as seniors reading to students in literacy programs or people learning food bank drop-off location times and acceptable items. “Since I joined (CFBC) in 2019, I’ve heard people want to be involved in nonprofits and volunteer and neither knows how to find each other,” Gietl says. “People desire to be involved. They yearn and their hearts are filled by being connected, and we want to help them be connected.” Building on the broad reach that the Connect Boone County app will bring, the second feature will be a community calendar that will serve as a central hub for countywide events. Information will be drawn from the Zionsville and Boone County chambers of commerce, the Boone County Economic Development

Corporation and the Boone County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The third app feature is one built from lessons learned during the pandemic to make it easier to find out how to get help and offer donations, Gietl says. “First will be a place to make monetary donations directly to nonprofits, but then other needs will be listed out there. We’re formalizing what we learned during COVID-19 and centrally housing it (services) in one location.” Another grant CFBC applied for but did not receive was funding to fully connect the Big 4 Trail from southeast of the county in Zionsville through Whitestown and centrally located Lebanon and ending in the county’s northwest corner at Thorntown. Gietl says state funding will cover those incomplete sections for each town separately. She is hopeful fiberoptics would be included during trail construction to help remote areas receive much-needed technology access. As part of the $150,000 leadership grant it did receive to fund the mobile app, the foundation built-in a community mural aspect, which several towns and cities already have in place. The theme of connection will be captured through the element of art murals on downtown buildings to build identity and sharing the unique town histories in Jamestown and Advance. She set her eyes to direct dollars to three towns, two of which are not on the trail — Jamestown and Advance were chosen because of their locations in the southwest portion of Boone County, and Thorntown in the northwest quadrant. “We want to pay homage to their towns’ individualities. Herman Wells was born in Jamestown and played a big part in supporting Indiana University and benefiting the state as a whole. Agriculture is also huge. There is a rich history to draw on,” Gietl says. She says the 30-feet-by-30-feet mural

designs are still in the works. Starting in Jamestown this summer, the muralist will paint or draw in the images and the town can fill in paint-by-number style. Advance will be next this year to receive a mural followed by Thorntown in 2022. “(Through the murals), we’re trying to spur excitement to visit,” Gietl says. “People can have an Instagram-able moment by the mural, eat at a local restaurant and shop and

see what a beautiful piece of Boone County our western towns are.” Finalization of each mural will feature a community block party to bring local awareness to the projects and towns that make Boone County a unique community in central Indiana. Owner Scott Buchner and Boutique General Manager Suzanne Peterson

PROSE Nails Boutique is Ready to Pamper the Northside Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Mariah Krafft

In the Spring of 2020, when the rest of the world was scouring the aisles for toilet paper and searching the web for sourdough starters, Scott Buchner discovered PROSE Nails Boutique, a new, nationwide franchise that offers manicures and pedicures with licensed nail salon artists who provide a pampering experience. The more Buchner researched, the more excited he got about the idea of bringing this healthy, safe, beautiful nail boutique to Hoosiers. The Franchise embraces a Membership Model that invites clients to pay a monthly membership fee for Unlimited nail treatments,

combining mani and pedi treatments. Members can also use their Membership at any PROSE Boutique nationwide (there are currently 15 locations). “This concept for nails is something that’s new and fresh to Indiana and frankly to America on a broad-level,” Buchner says. This location, which opens this summer in Zionsville, will be the 16th to open and the first one in Indiana. Located within the Shoppes at Weston Pointe at 10895 N. Michigan Road, PROSE shares a brand-new building with Eat The Frog Fitness and Club Pilates.

Boutique General Manager Suzanne Peterson is eager to build the brand and share it with the community. “I’m into clean self-care, and that’s what this franchise is all about — a commitment to healthy, clean nails,” Peterson says. “People are paying a lot more attention right now as to what they are putting in and on their bodies. That’s why every product that we have in the Boutique is vegan friendly.” PROSE Nails provides gel polish and dip. They do not provide acrylics because of the toxic chemicals and fumes. All of their services and products nourish, renew and inspire. As crazy as it might seem to open a new business during a pandemic, the timing actually worked out great because Buchner was given the opportunity of building it out COVID-safe from the get-go. “As opposed to piecemealing plexiglass and basically putting duct tape on a fire hose to address COVID, we were able to build it hypersterile and super clean, making it safe for our members,” he says. Many members who have signed up told Peterson that they haven’t gotten their nails done since the start of the pandemic. But due to the company’s commitment to cleanliness, they feel safe coming to PROSE Nails. “One of the best parts about this presale process is that it put us in a unique position to build relationships with our future customers before we even open,” Peterson adds. “I’ve had conversations that have lasted 30 or 40 minutes where we talk about everything — our dogs, our kids, our lives; that’s really cool to be able to build those relationships before we even open our doors.” “We gravitated toward this specific location because our co-tenants care about health and hygiene, just like we do,” says Buchner, who loved the location as it serves the greater Zionsville area as well as Carmel and other parts of the northside of Indy. In the future, he plans to spread the love by opening upwards of eight locations around the wheel of Indianapolis. 8 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2021 / TownePost.com

By forming these relationships ahead of time, members provide constructive, proactive feedback, making them integral resources for how the Boutique is structured as well as the services provided.

Nail salons, for the most part, are a fragmented market without a lot of consistency, but that’s not the case at PROSE Nails. “Outside of our Membership model, we’re also going to bring consistency through the form of technology with our app where clients can choose their artist, the time of day and day of the week that works best for them,” Buchner says. “We’re looking to provide an experience, not so much a service,” Peterson adds. “We’re not about getting people in and tossing them out the door as fast as we can. We want people to relax, have a beverage and enjoy themselves!” Another aspect that differentiates PROSE Nails from other nail services is the fact that they cater to families. “We have a lot of family members who have already signed up — a mix of mothers and daughters, mothers and grandmothers & mothers and spouses,” Buchner says. On June 12th, PROSE Nails plans to partner with Eat The Frog Fitness (ETF Fitness) as they host a Re-Grand Opening since they opened in February 2020, at the start of the pandemic. “ETF Fitness will have a fun-filled afternoon, celebrating their Re-Grand Opening with community members and families from 2–5 pm. We look forward to sharing the parking lot with them and having our Boutique ‘show-ready’ for those interested in a Membership,” Buchner says. Right now, PROSE Nails is offering an early-bird membership. Just pay $1 down to reserve an Unlimited Membership for $129/ month to individuals and $259/month for a Family Unlimited Membership up to four. Buchner recognizes that some prospective members are still on the fence about reserving a Membership. “We understand and appreciate that because it’s something new,” he says. “We just want to say to those people who are unsure, we welcome you with open arms. Come on in as a guest and, if you like it, come back. If you like it enough, we’ll have a Membership ready for you.” PROSE Nails Boutique is located at 10895 N. Michigan Rd., #140 in Zionsville. RIBBONS FOR REMEMBRANCE

ZIONSVILLE LIONS CLUB CREATES RIBBON MEMORIAL FOR VICTIMS OF COVID-19 Writer / Megan Arszman Photography / Provided

COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s a death toll that, unfortunately, continues to rise, and has since 2020. To most, the numbers are just that — numbers. But those numbers, 12,800 (and rising), represent each Hoosier lost to the

When the Zionsville Lions Club wanted to start a senior services committee, chaired by Dick McKeller, member Donna Fisher and her husband shared an idea for their first project. While on a trip to Florida in January, the couple saw an art installation 10 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2021 / TownePost.com

on the beach where more than 29,000 colorful ribbons were hung from end to end, the length of two football fields. In Florida, in one year alone, more than 29,000 lives were lost to COVID-19. Fisher and the Lions Club wanted to bring the concept to Indiana.

“It’s a number you see every day, and it grows every day,” Fisher says. “You become number to it and you stop associating that number with people.” In the months leading up to the debut of the Indiana installation, senior members of the Zionsville Lion’s Club, as well as other community members, met weekly. Together, they cut strips of pastel colored plastic — starting first with 12,400 then working their way to more than 12,800 by the event’s debut. “Every ribbon represents a person that has died from COVID-19 in Indiana,” Fisher says. “Unfortunately, that number grows every day.” Ropes and cords were cut to 12-foot lengths, with links on each end, to allow for easy installation and disassembly. The

ribbons are then hung from tree to tree throughout the park, creating a continue rainbow and flutter of colors and memories.

availability for communities and other Lions Clubs to borrow and display the piece at a location of their choice for a limited time.

“We hope that, when you look up and realize that all of those ribbons represent people, maybe it hits home and you don’t forget the sheer magnitude of this loss,” says Fisher. “This was our idea to just remember our loved ones.”

The Lions Club hopes that community members see this as a way to remember their loved ones that were lost and that it will help with the healing.

Fisher says that no additional ribbons will be added while the art piece is on display, but more ribbons can easily be added for future displays as the need deems.

“A lot of what happened in the last year, with all the people that passed away, there were no funerals and there were no visitations, or, if there were, they were very limited,” says Fisher. “We felt this would give families and friends a chance to come together and remember together.”

The display debuted on Memorial Day at Lions Park with a dedication ceremony and Visit the Zionsville Lions Club COVID-19 Ribbon Memorial any time before July 4 at will stay on display until right before the July 4 weekend. The Zionsville Lions Club Lions Park, 115 South Elm St., Zionsville. invites communities from around Indiana to share in the memorial display, opening the

Witsken started competing in Pickleball tournaments professionally in 2014. He’s won four gold medals at the US Open Pickleball Championships prior to this year. Witsken says he’s having the professional career in pickleball at 50 that he didn’t have when he walked away from professional tennis in his twenties. Almost as competitive as the tournament itself is the registration for the US Open Pickleball Championships. “Usually when they open up the sign up online, it usually fills up within 5 minutes across the country and the world of people signing up. They have 2,500 participants, they have a ton of courts, but they can’t handle more than that,” he says. “So, usually you want to sign up, you better be on your computer, open the window or win a lottery in the drawing to get in the event.” Players also must have Writer / Ryan Kennedy coach of Zionsville Middle School’s boys’ a certain rank or designation to compete in Photography / Provided and girls’ tennis teams, and founder of Team the pro-level events such as the US Open Witsken, an organization aimed at providing Pickleball Championships. says one of the toughest competitors at this year’s competition was the weather. “There were a lot of rain delays. It rained a lot, and it was super-hot and humid. So, guys like me, Yankees that, you know, aren’t used to 88° in super humidity,” Witsken says. “The first day, the first event was my best event which was singles but the level of humidity and the level of heat, I am in pretty good shape, but I couldn’t be prepared for that and I almost died.” Despite the weather, Witsken finished the week with three more medals to his name, a gold in the Men’s Senior Pro Doubles, and bronze in the Men’s Pro Split Age and the Mixed Senior Pro Doubles. Witsken says he’s pleased with the results, especially with what he calls the defining moment of the competition: when he and his partner rallied from down match point in the blistering heat to win the Men’s Pro Split Age quarterfinals. “That was pretty cool that my body allowed me to get through that event,” he says. When he’s not competing, Witsken is hosting and teaching at pickleball events all over the city. He and his wife are hosting Zionsville’s first-ever professional sporting event, the Indianapolis Pickleball Open, June 4 to 6 at the Zionsville Community High School tennis courts.
