ad’s can be some of the hardest people to surprise and purchase for. But it’s that time of year again to start tackling this job and planning ways to celebrate those dads in our lives. Father’s Day is just around the corner and here are a few ways you can make your dad feel pretty special.

1. DAD LIBS This is a fun one! There are plenty of printables online but you can easily make up your own. Write out a story, leave certain words blank, and then have your kids fill in the blanks to make for some really hilarious entertainment that you can read over and over. If it’s a really good one, add a favorite photo of him and the kids and have it all framed it for his desk!

2. PIZZERIA FUN Who doesn’t love pizza? Grab all the ingredients needed to make pizza and have a pizzeria of your own! You’ll need dough, sauce, toppings, and maybe even give him a pizza oven for a real surprise! The kids can make menus and signs for the “restaurant.” Throw on some aprons and play Italian music for full effect. This one is great because the entire family can be a part of it and it makes for a great night in the kitchen. Just make sure dad doesn’t have to clean up!

3. FAMILY ADVENTURES Dad is sure to enjoy any time adventuring with the family. If your family is more active and up for a long day, pick a state park to explore on a hike and try a trail you’ve never done before. If you are ready for a family bike ride, haul the bikes to a fun paved trail where you can stop for ice cream in the middle. Taking a boat out on the lake for the day would also be a fun way to celebrate dad and you can even pack everything you’d need for fishing if you think he’d be up for it.

4. BACKYARD BBQ If you are up for the grilling task, grab some ribs and chicken wings and head out back to fire up the grill and swap places with the dad in your life on this special 6 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / atZionsville.com

day. Or, if you are more like me, order in your favorite BBQ and heat it up when everyone’s ready to eat! Either way, it’s the thought that counts. Even better, make it into a picnic and grab some buns, some beer, or some bottled cokes and head to your favorite park. Let the kids pack the basket and plan the sides and games. They can even wrap the silverware in napkins for an added touch.

5. ALONE TIME Because it’s Father’s Day, let him choose how he’d like to spend some time alone. He might want to watch a game, play some golf, take a nap or work in the garden, but whatever he chooses, he’s sure to appreciate a few hours by himself. He’s sure to still want to hang out with the family at the end of the day, but letting him enjoy some kid-free time is something he’s sure to love!

6. REWARD HIM We all know dad is the best, so why not surprise him with his very own trophy and shower him with love (and some gifts). There’s a lot of DIY trophy inspiration online and you can totally make this one-of-a-kind gift for dad. Add dinosaurs, mini grills or hockey pucks and go for it! Spray it all silver or gold and add No. 1 DAD somewhere, and you’ve got a great gift for this Father’s Day that he can keep forever and show off. You can even fill the trophy with gift cards and tickets he can turn in for the kids to do chores, watch a game with him, or for quiet time. However you spoil your dad this Father’s Day, he will cherish you taking the time to shower him with love and gifts on this special day. atZionsville.com / JUNE 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 7

Owners Nick and Larry Averitt

L.A. CYCLES STILL RUNNING SMOOTHLY AFTER 35 YEARS IN BOONE COUNTY Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

For 35 years, L.A. Cycles has been a fixture of the local and regional Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales and service community.

The origins of the shop go back to the early 1980s, when Larry Averitt and his father were working in the railroad salvage business. The current L.A. Cycles shop served as their office space and, as Larry’s passion for cars and motorcycles grew, he decided to channel atZionsville.com / JUNE 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 9

that passion into a full-time job. “Over time, dad got more and more into motorcycles,” Larry’s son Nick says. “In 1985, he decided to go for it and do a full shop and service business.”

By the time L.A. Cycles opened in 1985, Larry’s dad had decided to retire, and Larry hired a few employees including a service technician to deal with the small but growing customer base he had begun generating. He officially closed the railway salvage business in 1986 and was off and running in the motorcycle industry. As a long-time devotee of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Larry had decided to focus his independent business primarily on new and vintage Harley models - a concept that he and the L.A. Cycles staff have adhered to through the years to this very day. Nick, 32, began hanging around the store as a youngster on the weekends, sweeping floors and wiping down bikes. He worked at the shop on a part-time basis through his high school and college years, developing the same passion for Harleys that his dad has always harbored. “I had always been around motorcycles, and motorsports in general,” Nick says. “Joining the store was always plan B, but I wanted to do it more and more as the years went by, and went to work here in 2011.” Nick now serves as sales manager at L.A. Cycles, although he says he wears many different hats depending on the day and customer volume at any given time. Now, as in the early days of the business, L.A. Cycles stocks, sells, and services a range of Harley-Davidson models. “We used to carry some American Custom stuff when it was a hot market for that in the early 2000s, and we’ll do some Indian items here and there, but the vast majority of what we do is HarleyDavidson,” says Nick, who studied turf science at Purdue University before joining the family business. L.A. Cycles offers a range of new Harley models, as well as parts and service for vintage bikes. Nick says many of the shop’s vendors offer monthly or quarterly training that the shop’s service techs consistently take advantage of, to stay informed on new parts, methods and technologies.

OVER TIME, DAD GOT MORE AND MORE INTO MOTORCYCLES.

WE’RE ONE OF THE ONLY MOTORCYCLE SHOPS IN THE STATE THAT STILL STOCKS A FULL LINE OF PARTS FOR VINTAGE HARLEY BIKES.

atZionsville.com / JUNE 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 11

“We used to do a lot of custom-build and chopper work when those got popular with the reality shows in the 2000s, but that market’s kind of gone,” Nick explains. “One market that continues to be strong is the antique Harley market. We do a lot of work with the vintage Harley stuff. That’s really what makes us different.”

New

While many motorcycle shops handle service repair for certain vintage Harley models, Nick says there aren’t many U.S. shops that offer full service for antique, V-twin engine models.

“We’re one of the only motorcycle shops in the state that still stocks a full line of parts for vintage Harley bikes,” he says. “Nowadays that’s rare, and we get people who’ve traveled a pretty great distance to get what they need here. We’re a nuts-and-bolts store, and we’re not big on the merchandise side like bandanas and stuff.” Thanks to Larry’s continued passion for accumulating the right tools for each job that came along over the years and decades, the L.A. Cycles service staff currently carries vintage factory tools from the 1930s to the present, allowing the staff to handle most any type of vintage Harley bike that might roll into the service area. “The factory tooling is the most challenging part because if you don’t have the specialty V-twin tools you can’t complete the service job,” Nick says. “Luckily, my dad’s been around a long time, and the engine builder here who recently retired had been building Harleys for 40 years. The vintage Harley market has always been strong and the internet has helped that, so we’ll always have that neat niche to work in. But don’t get me wrong, we like selling and working on all the new stuff too.” L.A. Cycles is located at 120 Porter Avenue in Whitestown. Owner Michele Isenhower

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography

Michele Isenhower is a champion for downtown Zionsville and all it has to offer. Her store, Michele’s on Main, is not only a well-loved boutique in the village, but it also has an interesting backstory of female entrepreneurism. After almost six years at her former location at the north end of Main Street, she has moved to 285 South Main. Situated just across from the Friendly Tavern, Isenhower is enjoying the larger space and increased visibility. “The new location is where Siro’s Chic Boutique was,” Isenhower says. “I took the space over last September. It’s in the main area of Zionsville, so it’s a better location. The store is bigger, and the parking and traffic flow is better.” Isenhower developed an admiration for the charm of Zionsville when she worked at Watts Christmas Tree Farm before earning a business degree. Later, she found herself in the corporate world while meeting the demands of raising a family. The concept of owning a retail business that would allow her to work fewer hours and enable her to supervise her two sons’ activities appealed to her. When her idea of being a business owner did come to pass, she realized it didn’t reduce her time working, but it did give her more flexibility. “I had a desire to spend more time with my family,” Isenhower says. “I wanted to work a 40-hour week instead of an over70-hour one. I didn’t realize the huge number of hours I would work owning my own business. I consulted with a business broker who found a craft store in Brownsburg. It seemed more like a gift store to me and it soon evolved into Michele’s Boutique and Gifts, and has now been in existence for nineteen years.” Isenhower soon developed a relationship with Kathy Brown, the former owner of Browns on Main in Zionsville. Both women carried the Vera Bradley line of handbags and luggage products, so they helped each other supply what their 16 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / atZionsville.com

customers wanted. When Brown was ready to close her shop, she approached Isenhower about taking her space at 40 North Main Street. “When I took over Kathy’s store and changed the name to Michele’s on Main, 70 percent of the merchandise in the store was Vera Bradley,” Isenhower says. “I brought in several lines of apparel and diversified the options customers had. I chose brands I loved and was passionate about. Today, Michele’s on Main customers have many choices from brands not found in other boutiques. Since Isenhower has established herself as a successful business owner, she is able to carry lines such as Brighton, Alex and Ani, Hobo, Simply Southern, Frank Lyman and Kendra Scott. Most of her merchandise is in the $30 to $50 price range, but she is glad to accommodate former Siro’s Chic Boutique patrons by carrying a few items from the previous store, besides filling requests through ordering online. “People need to continue to support local businesses on Main Street in Zionsville,” Isenhower says. “The boutiques and restaurants offer a charming destination experience you can’t get from shopping at a bigbox store or online. People need to spend their money where it counts.” Visit Michele’s on Main at 285 South Main Street in Zionsville. BACKROADS BBQCOOKS UP TEXAS-STYLE BARBECUE WITHFAMILY-FRIENDLY SURROUNDINGS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Eli Beaverson

The owners of Backroads BBQ in Lebanon are confident that once customers have eaten there, they’ll likely return. Chris Canal, a partner in the business and Lebanon resident, says he and his colleagues strive to make the restaurant stand out, and this has been their philosophy since opening the eatery. The establishment’s partners include Shawn Sublette, general manager and operating manager, Mike Hibbeln, executive chef, and Joe Stein, a CPA based in Zionsville who also serves as board president of Zionsville Community Schools. “We started the build-out on the space in July of 2019, and officially opened on November 16, 2019,” Canal says. Sublette and Hibbeln are both experienced chefs, general managers and restaurant operators, according to Canal. “They worked together for nearly 20 years at Rick’s Cafe Boatyard in Indy,” Canal says. “Mike was the executive chef at Rick’s Boatyard for 23 years.” When the partners were looking for a strong location for their business, they knew Lebanon was an ideal spot. “We chose Lebanon due to its emergence as a growing business community,” Canal says. “It also fit our criteria as a community, as our plan is to open more locations around central Indiana.” Canal says Backroads BBQ has succeeded due to its unique food offerings. “A few things separate us,” he says. “As far as the barbecue, we use only fresh meats, our own unique seasonings and rubs, and smoke using mesquite and post oak wood. For some items like salmon, we are using an Alder wood and orange wood blend. We offer a few more menu items like fried catfish and southern atZionsville.com / JUNE 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 19

fried chicken. All of this is under our two outstanding chefs, Mike Hibbeln and Shawn Sublette.” Customer favorites include Texas-style brisket and fried catfish fillet. The Backroads BBQ menu also includes sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, biscuits, onion rings, fried chicken, ranch potato salad, brisket quesadillas, pulled pork nachos and ribs. Freddy Daniels, a Carmel resident and recent Backroads BBQ patron, says he plans to make a return trip soon with family and friends. “I loved their southern fried chicken,” Daniels says. “It made my mouth water. It was outstanding. The salmon dip and mac and cheese are also delicious. The waitstaff was also very friendly and attentive.” Derek Demilt, a Carmel resident and recent Backroads BBQ customer, says the ribs and pulled pork nachos are excellent. “Everything was really fresh,” Demilt says. “I’ve also had their corn pudding and apple sauce, which were outstanding. Our food was hot, and the waitstaff was very fast. I have told several friends that Backroads BBQ is a great place to relax and enjoy an excellent meal.” Backroads BBQ is located at 1404 West South Street in Lebanon.
