W

hen Wendi Louks and Amy Talbott opened Blooms by Dragonfly in February 2016, they wanted to create a service-oriented business that would allow them to develop personal relationships with their customers while making others smile. Two years later, they say everything’s coming up roses, hydrangeas, tulips and more and they couldn’t be happier with the result. “It’s been amazing,” Louks says. “Flowers bring joy to everyone and can be incorporated into every occasion. Flowers are an instant mood lifter. There really is no bad time to receive flowers.” Before becoming Zionsville’s premier floral designers, Louks and Talbott were ticket brokers who helped their clients locate the hottest tickets in town and buy the best seats for their budget. However, when the ticket resale industry became more pricecompetitive and Internet-based, the pair

decided to look for a new line of work. They saw a need in Zionsville for a flower shop and thought it was the kind of business that would benefit from their special skill set. “We know a lot about developing personal relationships, offering great customer service and giving people something unique that

they can’t get anywhere else,” Talbott says. Unlike traditional flower stores that rely on a catalogue of traditional arrangements, Blooms by Dragonfly eschews the tried-andtrue in favor of the more atypical. Talbott personally selects only the freshest, most beautiful blooms from her wholesalers

mixing perennial favorites with a wide range of unusual varieties for a spur-of-the-moment bouquet or an original custom creation. “We don’t go by the book and we don’t use a recipe,” Talbott says. “We listen to our customers and try to exceed their expectations.” Although they have only been in business for two years, the ladies say they have experienced tremendous growth and are thrilled with the customer response they have received. Naturally there are challenges as well, especially during prom season when Talbott’s creativity is put to the test. With 200 orders to fill in a few weekends, she knows the kids are counting on her team to come up with something distinct, dazzling and above all fresh. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s always fun,” she says. Not only have they become the area’s go-to gals for spectacular centerpieces, beautiful bouquets and special occasion sprays, but Blooms by Dragonfly also offers a wide assortment of gift options that can be purchased alone or included in a floral design. Selections include Donaldson’s Chocolate, Mud Pie and Elegant Baby gift items and home décor as well as memorial stones and jewelry created by local artisans. “We love being able to include these items into our arrangements so that someone not only gets flowers, but a keepsake gift as well,” Louks says.

Louks and Talbott say that Zionsville’s quaint downtown district has been the perfect place to launch their venture and the other local businesses have been extremely supportive of their efforts. “It’s been wonderful to be part of that network and know that we are not on our own here,” Louks says. “We know the best is yet to come.” Blooms By Dragonfly is located at 176 S Main St in Zionsville. Paint It! Kids Brings Color to Life

Writer / Jane VanOsdol Photography Provided

Architect turned artist Kate Jones has created a colorful job for herself in the community with Paint It! Kids. Jones has taken a talent and turned it into a business that doesn’t feel like work but more like a chance to live out her passion. “It’s not a job to me,” she says. “I’m playing around. I still can’t believe it. I’m just having fun. I’ve been very lucky that this

opportunity fell in my lap like it did.” Jones instructs kids and adults in the art of painting both in her studio and out in the community.

Background In Architecture Jones has always been interested in art. At Carmel High School, she discovered architecture, taking all the CAD, architecture and design classes she could. 10 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atZionsville.com

She went on to have a successful career as an architectural designer in Chicago before she quit her job to raise a family. Ten years and four children later, her father William Smock decided some time out of the house would benefit her. Smock is an accomplished artist himself. While completing two tours of duty in Iraq, he created military art to help pass the time. CNN picked up on his story, and today one of his paintings hangs in the White House. He also taught art in IPS for almost 40 years.

Make a Deal

Paint It! KIDS owner Kate Jones with her family: Karina, Nadia, Travis, Eli & Nolan Jones

Smock made a deal with Jones: he would pay for her to get her master’s in art at the University of Indianapolis if she would commit to taking the program with him. Jones agreed, applied to the program in 2009, and was accepted. She credits her dad with keeping her focused. In 2012 when her youngest started kindergarten, Jones realized she didn’t know what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. She had been mom for 10 years. She had her master’s degree. She didn’t want to go back to architecture. Who was she? While Jones absolutely loved art, she didn’t yet see how it could be a career. One phone call in 2012 changed that. A friend called and asked her to lead a painting party she was hosting. Jones eagerly accepted and posted about the experience on Facebook. Not too long after that another friend whose family owns Heartland Hall Child Development Center in Carmel called and asked her to come in one day a week to teach preschool art. A business was born. Soon other schools started calling.

“I didn’t mean to start this. It really just kind of fell into my lap, and it was exactly what I needed at that time because I didn’t know what I wanted to do.” - Kate Jones -

“I didn’t mean to start this,” Jones says. “It really just kind of fell into my lap, and it was exactly what I needed at that time because I didn’t know what I wanted to do.”

Move to Acreage In 2014 Jones and her husband bought an old home in need of repairs on 2.5 acres in Zionsville. The original log cabin of the home was built in the 1830s and the barn is pre-Civil war era as well. Jones wasn’t exactly sure about undertaking such a job until she saw what was in the lower level: an art studio. That clinched the deal. Paint It! Kids is based out of that art studio and Jones has developed a thriving, mobile multi-faceted business that includes the following: atZionsville.com / JUNE 2018 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 11

BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.

• Birthday painting parties • Studio classes • S chool enrichment activities for the Carmel, Westfield, and Zionsville school systems • Summer camps • Artist in residence program • Public events • Adult corporate events and fundraisers

Art Is for Anyone Jones’ encouraging can-do style makes art possible for even those who don’t feel they have a shred of artistic talent. She chooses projects that lead to success. “Anyone can do this,” she says. “Everything can be broken down into simple shapes. Once you do it step by step and your eyes start seeing those shapes and how they work together, nothing is hard.”

High client satisfaction = over 90% client retention.

Thanks to her dad, Jones can demonstrate the process of art come full circle to her budding artists. Smock kept all of her childhood artwork, so when her students get frustrated with a project, she’ll whip out one of her own preschool drawings and set it next to a current painting of hers. “This and this were painted by the same artist,” she’ll say. “What do you think happened between here and here? And they’ll say, ‘Lots of practice.’”

Knocking on doors trying to get anyone to take a chance on his business took a while, but once he did, he was able to build one of only a few jewelers that had a full-time staff dedicated to creating custom jewelry, working on repairs and creating custom molds. Once his wholesale business was developed, he took the next step of opening up a retail store in 1998. Kylei Harness is the owner of Southern Fancy Boutique in Zionsville.

here’s a little shop in Zionsville village that’s becoming Main Street’s not so secret little secret. Southern Fancy Boutique offers comfortable yet sophisticated ladies clothing. They even carry a line of children’s clothing too. The shop has been in the village for just two years, but owner Kylei Harness has made it all the rage. Boutiques become popular because of the unique pieces they carry that shoppers can’t find anywhere else. There’s no denying that scoring a unique piece from a boutique and wearing it for the first time is exhilarating. You’ll get that at Southern Fancy Boutique, and you’ll find something even better. “Our clothing is affordable,” Harness says. “The store’s motto is looks for less. I’m budget conscious like everyone. The key to making clothing popular is making it affordable.” Harness has definitely succeeded in making her store popular. After just one year in business, she already outgrew her first shop in the village and moved into a 2,500 square foot space last July. “We’ve got lots of repeat business not just from local shoppers, but people from out of town, even out of state who’ve come,” she says. The personalized customer service is certain to play a part in the store’s success considering Harness is in the store every day. “I love being here. I really enjoy what I do,” she adds. The store features everything from fun, comfortable tops to dresses, jeans and accessories. Harness says jumpsuits are the most popular seller at the shop. “They’re sophisticated yet very comfortable,” she says. Jeans are another top seller at the boutique, and Harness considers them her specialty. Drawing from her previous experience at casual apparel retailer, Buckle, where she was a denim specialist, Harness stocks a variety of stylish jeans.

<Southern Fancy> Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger . Photographer / Ryan Woodall

“Our jeans are stretchy, but they are made of denim, so they’re not jeggings,” she says. “We’ll take the time to find the perfect size for you because you can expect the jeans to stretch a little.” All jeans at Southern Fancy Boutique are mid-rise jeans, ranging from 8 1/4 to 10 1/4. No fashion-forward female on the hunt for the complete package can possibly walk out of Southern Fancy Boutique without browsing their jewelry. Among the favorites is the collection of bracelets called Bourbon and Bowties, a line of chic, stackable bracelets that every outfit must have. All the bracelets are handmade with stones from around the world.

“People love the stones,” Harness says. “We’re the only retailer in Zionsville that carries them and maybe only one other in the city.” If you’re not already convinced to make a stop at Southern Fancy Boutique, there’s a way to make it come to you. The Southern Fancy Boutique Truck brings all those great fashions to you. During the summer months, and sometimes in early Fall while the weather is still warm, you can request the Southern Fancy Boutique Truck to take you and a group of friends on the fashion ride of your lives. It’s free, and it’s stocked full of all Southern Fancy Boutique favorites. It’s literally a

store on wheels. It’s popular for girls’ night out events, bachelorette parties, birthday parties, or even a guys’ shopping event for times when the fellas need a little help with gift ideas for their special ladies. You can call 765-481-5919 to reserve it or inquire online on their website. “Since we were busy opening the new space last summer, we didn’t get to do the truck as much as we’d hoped,” Harness says. “But this Summer, we’re looking forward to having it in full swing.” Check out Southern Fancy Boutique today at 140 S. Main Street in Zionsville, or visit them online at southernfancyboutique.com.

ZIONSVILLE’S COUNSELING & RESOURCE CENTER OFFERS MENTAL HEALTH CARE AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photos Provided by The Cabin Counseling & Resource Center

When Vicki* learned that her teenage daughter was suicidal, she panicked — not only because she was scared senseless for her child’s well-being but also because she was afraid she didn’t have the financial means to provide help. Money was tight,

especially in the wake of her recent split from her husband. Now a single mother of three, she struggled to make ends meet and couldn’t fathom how she could afford both counseling and groceries. Thankfully, a trusted friend told Vicki about The Cabin Counseling & Resource Center. Located in the heart of downtown Zionsville, The Cabin provides professional atZionsville.com / JUNE 2018 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 25

mental health counseling for individuals, couples, and families representing more than 130 zip codes in Indiana and surrounding states. What truly makes The Cabin unique, however, is its Samaritan Fund, created to provide therapy at a reduced rate to those who otherwise would be unable to afford it. The Samaritan Fund pays the difference between the full fee and the calculated sliding scale fee, making it

possible for clients to be seen regardless of their financial situation. Originally formed in 1999 as a ministry through the Zionsville Presbyterian Church, The Cabin was initially comprised of just two people — a minister and Deidra Rausch, who had a background in nursing. When the center relocated, Rausch went back to school and earned a degree in marriage and family counseling and became The Cabin’s Executive Director in 2002. Situated across from Lyons Park, The Cabin counselors utilize the park and its amenities to engage in “adventure therapy” with their clients, participating in such activities as hiking and kayaking. This unique action-centered approach to treatment is especially helpful for teenagers to engage them cognitively, affectively, and behaviorally. According to Rausch, their therapists are seeing increasing numbers of high school, middle school, and even elementary school students who are suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression. Sadly, there is an ugly stigma that is attached to mental health issues. As a result, individuals often avoid seeking help for fear of being shunned, ridiculed, or perceived as “crazy.” In addition to the stigma surrounding mental health, living in an affluent city or neighborhood oftentimes spikes anxiety in children and teens, which can lead to a plethora of problems.

“WE PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR CLIENTS TO PRESENT JUST AS THEY ARE, AND WE WORK WITH THEM TO NAVIGATE THE OBSTACLES THAT LIFE PRESENTS.” - DEI DRA RAUS CH -

“I’ve seen it in sixth grade, even — children worrying about whether they’ll get into an Ivy League school,” Rausch says. “And this is the case not just in Zionsville but also in Carmel, Westfield, and other surrounding areas.” Last year Boone County was the greatest percentage of the sliding scale recipient so the assumption that Zionsville residents do not need financial help is simply untrue. Of the $58,000 of financial support that was provided through the Samarian Fund in 2017, Boone County comprised $38,000 of it. 26 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atZionsville.com

P “People are stressed out, and they try to hide that stress, even from their own families,” Rausch adds. “For instance, we saw a teenage girl who didn’t want her parents knowing that she had reached her breaking point so she confided in her friend’s mom, who brought her in.” To date, The Cabin, which now employs 10 therapists, has never turned away anyone in need, nor restricted the number of sessions needed, for those who qualify. Roughly 30 percent of those who call for counseling services qualify for a reduced fee. “We provide a safe environment for clients to present just as they are, and we work with them to navigate the obstacles that life presents,” says Rausch, who is passionate about helping those like Vicki’s daughter. Over time, she was able to unpack her feelings of worthlessness and self-doubt and ultimately find a way to redirect her negative emotions.

Originally conceived by Colleen Dulac and Kris Bussick, The O’Connor House was started in 2005 to provide a Christian home to help single, pregnant homeless women improve life for themselves and their children. Because the organization helps to reduce homelessness, in 2010 they received a $500,000 grant, which enabled them to construct a multi-family living space. Since its grand opening in December 2011, The O’Connor House has helped more than 350 women and children.

“Moms often tell us that they expected this place would feel like a shelter but instead it feels like a home,” says Nancy Imhoff, Development Director for The O’Connor House. “That’s our intent.” The house can accommodate up to eight women at a time, and they are one of the few maternity homes in the country that also take a pregnant mother’s toddler. Most of the moms who come to The O’Connor House are between 19 and 26. They’re allowed to stay for up to 18 months. During their stay, they’re supplied with food, clothing and transportation. They also receive educational support, life skills training and healing through counseling. In 28 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atZionsville.com

addition, the organization offers a formal mentoring program where mentors help the women set personal and career goals and develop specific steps to achieve those goals. “We also focus on developing positive parenting skills and healthy lifestyle habits,” says Kristi Lammers, who helps with Community Engagement. Research shows that 80 percent of single moms live in poverty. “We’re not a band-aid. We invest deeply in each of these young moms to get them on a path out of poverty,” Imhoff says. “That takes a lot of resources and wraparound support.”

Susan Barrett, O’Connor House Director

Education is key (many moms are working toward a high school diploma, trade school certifications or various levels of higher education). So is learning how to set a regular schedule to achieve productivity. “When these women start becoming productive, their self-esteem increases,” Imhoff says. “They’re also met with greater freedom and opportunity.” Located between Carmel and Westfield, the organization uses more than 80 volunteers a week who provide transportation for the moms, do yard work and daily chores, perform maintenance duties and teach moms how to cook.

“We have local mothers and grandmothers who come in to hold babies, so the moms can take time to focus on an online class or work on another goal,” Lammers says. Many individuals, families and groups volunteer at The O’Connor House from all of the north suburban communities, including Westfield, Fishers, Zionsville and Carmel. They are supporting our neighbors who primarily come from downtown Indianapolis and need assistance at a time of crisis in their lives. The volunteers support the mission in so many ways by giving of their time, knowledge and abilities. Some groups do a one-time project. For

example, the members of the Knights of Columbus from the Zionsville area worked together to do the work involved in completing a full bathroom in the basement of The O’Connor House. This has been a wonderful blessing to the moms and children because the playroom is in the basement. Though it’s a Christian organization, they accept women from anywhere in the U.S. and from any faith. Women do, however, need to be over 18, pregnant and homeless to stay. “The O’Connor House transforms lives and impacts generations,” says Imhoff, who

shares the story of a woman who had been in the prison system for a number of years. Once released, she became pregnant and was living on a park bench before finding The O’Connor House. “When she got here, it was the first time she felt unconditional love,” says Imhoff, who notes that through the support and healing she received from the house and the community, this woman went on to earn her college degree and now lives in an apartment with her son. “Her son’s choices, his life, his impact, his opportunities are completely different than his mom’s, and that’s all because she got this second chance,” Imhoff says. Fresh starts and second chances are what it’s all about. For more information, visit theoconnorhouse.org.
