INSPIRING STARTUPS NEW ZWORKS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TALKS SUCCESS OF ZIONSVILLE’S TWO CO-WORKING SPACES Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Eli Beaverson

Several years ago, a few Zionsville community leaders recognized a need for a co-working space in town. In April 2015 these leaders founded zWORKS, a nonprofit organization located in the heart of Zionsville that provides shared workspace for entrepreneurs, startups, freelancers, established businesses and remote workers.

“It’s been successful in that a home-work life balance has become very important to people,” says zWORKS Executive Director Vickie Hall. “Plus, more companies are providing a remote option these days.” The space quickly became popular, offering a low-barrier entry for new or startup businesses. In fact, after seeing the growth in both Zionsville and zWORKS, volunteers recognized that they needed to hire an executive director who could focus atZionsville.com / FEBRUARY 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 7

on continued growth and fundraising. In January 2017 Kate Swanson took the position, and took the organization to the next level in the areas of streamlining, member software services, and printing systems. She was at the helm until recently when Hall, who has worked at zWORKS as space manager, assumed the position. “Kate is an incredible lifter-upper of women,” Hall says. “She took me to meetings and introduced me around. She

made the transition smooth by making sure that I was not a stranger to anyone.” Hall is not surprised that the workspace has become so popular. After all, it offers members reliable, high-speed internet, private meeting rooms, 24-hour building access, and large, quiet work zones. Plus, as a nonprofit zWORKS has sponsors and partners such as payroll service representatives, lawyers and accounting services. While no one is required to use these partners, their services can come in handy. Jeff Wraley, founder and CEO of BestQuote, is a member at zWORKS. He says the space offers a sense of community, and the perfect amenities for early-stage companies looking to launch their ventures. “I have definitely benefited from getting to know other members and others who have graduated into their own office spaces,” Wraley says. “Those connections have been critical to getting my business off the ground. Believe it or not, Zionsville has developed a small but meaningful tech startup scene. That wouldn’t be the case without zWORKS.” zWORKS leaders have been proactive in hosting events including a monthly Member Happy Hour, which takes place on the third Thursday of every month and is open to the public. In addition, zWORKS hosts six Lunch & Learn events per year, during which local business leaders address topics of interest to startup businesses. For example, with tax season approaching, Hall asked Allman Johnson, a zWORKS accounting partner, to lead a Lunch & Learn session on February 5. “We want to be a resource to our members,” Hall says. Last year zWORKS held an inaugural pitch night in which startup businesses gave three-minute presentations about their businesses to five judges, all of whom are part of the investment community. The grand prize was one year of free office use at zWORKS. Hall and her colleagues plan to organize another pitch night this fall.

Executive Director Vickie Hall

Over the past five years, zWORKS has grown steadily. When it opened only annual memberships were offered, because leaders wanted to foster a community feel and didn’t want to encourage transient membership. In 2017 the organization began offering monthly memberships. “(Members) are usually businesses that are looking to grow and gain traction,” Hall says. “For instance, it might be two buddies starting a business that they hope to grow within a year, but right now they need to hunker down in an office rather than an open co-working space.”

Currently, zWORKS membership hovers between 215 and 225, with an average of 30 members utilizing the space daily.

Lance Schwab, managing director at Tegra, appreciates the sense of community at zWORKS.

Hall’s goals for 2020 include taking care of current members and continuing to increase partnerships to create more startup resources. In addition, she wants to maintain strong relationships with Zionsville leaders, working closely with the new administration while recruiting new businesses.

“zWORKS was an easy choice,” he says. “It’s a five-minute drive and has all the basics I need including quiet work space, reservable conference rooms, and an unexpected perk - people that fill the banter gap you miss out on working from home.”

“We want to make sure they understand the value zWORKS brings to the table,” Hall says.

VILLAGE HOME ZIONSVILLE 27 East Cedar Street Zionsville, IN 317- 973-5252

fter spending almost 12 years away from Zionsville, Dion and Suzanne Deason have again brought their unique brand of full-service interior design services to the Village. Located at 27 East Cedar Street, their new shop, Village Home Zionsville, offers a brick-and-mortar space the couple has filled with eclectic furnishings covering a multitude of styles. “It’s a nice feeling to come back home,” Suzanne says. “People have been coming in to say hello and let us know they are glad we are back. We love how local residents support the Village, and how the Chamber of Commerce promotes the businesses in it.” Dion says the couple enjoys the Zionsville’s sense of community. “We could live anywhere in Indianapolis, but we chose Zionsville and knew we wanted to be right in the Village,” he says. The Deasons’ prior shop, At Home in the Village, was housed in a historic church on North Main Street. It was open from 1999 until 2005, when the couple sold the building to artist Nancy Noel and it became known as the Sanctuary. The Deasons then moved to Dion’s hometown of Greenwood, South Carolina, and established a business called Design Elements. Upon the sale of their business in mid-October last year, Village Home opened its doors the Friday after Thanksgiving.

“It was always part of the plan to move back to Zionsville and be close to Suzanne’s family,” Dion says. “We started working on coming back a few years ago, but with a busy schedule of projects already in the works, timing was instrumental in completing previous commitments. Design Elements was in an 1840 antebellum mansion previously owned by the Mayor and was purchased by a business that wanted a historical property.” Suzanne says the couple kept in touch with established Zionsville clients during their South Carolina stint.

“Other customers are from many places like Colorado, Michigan and Chicago,” she says. “We have seen them through second and third homes, and are now even doing their kids’ homes.” Village Home offers a one-stop experience for anyone looking to redecorate one room or even an entire house - regardless of budget. The Deasons are adept at overseeing both renovations and new construction. They design plans, research and order products, handle scheduling, and oversee installation. Dion’s specialty is custom kitchen and bath cabinetry.

location. In the future, the Deasons plan on doing similar projects in the Zionsville area. “We are very excited to be back in the community of Zionsville, and to be part of this historical village that has so much to offer,” Dion says.

Inside the shop, customers can find items of many styles, ranging from a $17 hand-painted fish plaque to the Deasons’ own line of upholstered furniture produced in North Carolina. The store is designed and decorated based on the products and items that Dion and Suzanne would use on Interior Design projects. “All the bases are covered - we don’t stick with just one style,” Suzanne says. “Much of our work is custom and we can order whatever the customer wants. We carry two custom upholstery private label lines that include sofas and chairs which are very popular, and so are our unique dining chairs and tables for dining rooms or kitchens. We don’t have a set, identifiable style. The rooms we design don’t look like us, they look like the customer.”

For the last five years, the Deasons have been purchasing homes in various neighborhoods, completely gutting, redesigning and renovating them. After completion, they fully furnish and decorate the homes, using them as a decorator ShowHome. All ticket proceeds were donated to the Humane Society of Greenwood, of which Suzanne was on the board of directors. Proceeds from the ShowHomes are contributed to the campaign to relocate the facility to a much needed new

women’s networking group in Zionsville?” Wood asked Kuller at the time.

atZionsville.com / FEBRUARY 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 13

Kuller and Wood began connecting with brilliant and talented women from the community to help build the website, write bylaws and build a board of directors. During the first meeting, Kuller and Wood expected five or ten women to show up instead, 35 ladies came. Now, more than 50 members attend on a regular basis. “The thing that’s different about us is that the group is exclusive to your business industry, and yet we still try to be as inclusive as we can,” Kuller explains. Prior to joining ZWIN, women should attend at least one meeting to determine whether it’s a good fit for them. Attendees can then fill out a membership application for the board to review. Potential members must live or work in Zionsville to be considered for membership. “Some of our women work for nonprofits,” Kuller says. “Others are businesses that work out of their homes. Yet others work for large firms.” Member Cindy Argentine calls ZWIN a blessing. “On the personal level, ZWIN provides an opportunity to meet new friends from a variety of careers and companies,” she says. “Most of these women are active in several civic groups, so there’s an added benefit of getting to learn about local service projects. On the professional side, ZWIN provides a great mix of educational programs and marketing opportunities.” Several businesses have skyrocketed with the help of ZWIN, but it’s not just the businesses that have grown - Kuller mentions one member who was quiet and shy before blossoming socially after joining. “She didn’t speak out much, but in the past three years she has come to carry herself much more confidently,” Kuller says. “It’s lovely to witness.” Member Jennifer Scott appreciates how ZWIN has strengthened her ties to the community and enabled her to develop lasting relationships with amazing women who are dedicated to the organization. 14 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atZionsville.com

“It’s inspiring to be part of a group of strong individuals always building each other up personally and professionally,” Scott says. ZWIN meets on the second Thursday of every month. During meetings, a few members share details about their business and explain how they are involved in the community. Then a keynote speaker or panel of experts address the group on topics such as social media, online safety, changes to tax laws, and networking with confidence. “The biggest thing we do is network,” Wood says. “We have several events during the year where we have lengthy networking exercises so that each member can get to know someone new.” The group also partners with community organizations on service projects. ZWIN has supported the Zionsville Food Pantry and the Boone County Cancer Society. In 2019 it supported Dove Recovery House for Women, Marion County’s largest substance abuse recovery center for women. Dove House’s comprehensive services include housing, counseling and trauma therapy, case management services, parenting classes and more. Wood asked members to donate soft robes, comfy slippers, gloves and jewelry for holiday care packages. ZWIN members also wrote encouraging notes for each package. “Our initial goal was to collect 40 robes, but I had a box in my office that was overflowing with robes,” Wood says. “I was shocked by how the community stepped up, as our network of women reached out to their friends and colleagues.” Wendy Noe, Dove House executive director, is grateful for ZWIN’s generosity and support. “By creating care packages for our Doves, ZWIN is investing in Dove House, and investing in our women and their futures,” Noe says. “For many of our women, no one has ever done that for them before.” atZionsville.com / FEBRUARY 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 15

Every year ZWIN adopts a theme, and this year’s theme is self-care. “As women, sometimes we’re so focused on taking care of those around us that we tend to neglect our own needs, so we are handing out bingo cards to the women to encourage them to carve out time for themselves,” Kuller says.

COMPLE TE CARE DR. GERALD WHALEN STRIVES FOR A COMPREHENSIVE HEALING APPROACH AT ZIONSVILLE HOLISTIC CHIROPRACTIC & WELLNESS CENTER Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Ryan Woodall

At the age of 16, Dr. Gerald Whalen first experienced how life-changing chiropractic care can be. “I was trying to play basketball,” Whalen says. “First I went to a medical doctor and he said, ‘Don’t practice for a week. Just rest.’ I did that, tried to practice, and it didn’t change anything.” After similar results with an orthopedist, Whalen then saw a chiropractor. “I went to my aunt’s chiropractor and had immediate relief, which was really profound,” Whalen says. Ever since then, Whalen has dedicated his life to chiropractic care in hopes of giving patients the same assistance he had at 16.

With decades of experience in chiropractic care and holistic wellness, Whalen now practices at Zionsville Holistic Chiropractic & Wellness Center. Having served the Zionsville community for over a decade now, Whalen specializes in a four-pronged approach to care, which includes gentle, exact chiropractic adjustments, proper nutrition, recommendation of homeopathy to balance body chemistry, and lastly a system to release damaging emotional stress and tension called the neuro-emotional technique. Long before his days at Zionsville Holistic Chiropractic & Wellness Center, Whalen obtained a degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic, where he took part in 4,000 hours of education and training. “They were the first chiropractic college,” Whalen says of Palmer. “Chiropractic started in Davenport, Iowa, so that’s the founding school. That gave me the skills

and the training to be quite proficient. Even when I first came out, there were people noting that I was a Palmer graduate.” Whalen then served patients in Richmond, Indiana, where he stayed for 29 years. While in Richmond he continued his education in holistic health care, eventually conceiving his four-pronged, mind-body approach in 1991. “That’s really created a breakthrough in health and healing,” Whalen says. “We now call that integrated health care, so I was doing integrated health care before the term was even used.” For patients considering Zionsville Holistic Chiropractic & Wellness Center, the pathway to care is fairly simple. Like any doctor, Whalen gathers health history on the patient before conducting an in-depth examination.

18 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2020 / atZionsville.com

“The whole process of the consultation exam takes about 50 minutes to an hour, so I do often find out things that the people don’t even tell me about,” Whalen says. “After that, I analyze the results and we set up a next appointment. Then they come back and I give them a written report of all those findings.” Although many patients come to Zionsville Holistic Chiropractic & Wellness Center for back pain, neck pain and spinal issues, Whalen has helped individuals with other ailments including allergies, digestive problems, hormonal issues and more. “Every part of the body is controlled by the nervous system,” Whalen says. “So if you get the nervous system working better, 317.844.6629 P | 317.844.6636 F DIGITAL PROOF proofs605@alphagraphics.com then the body is able toREQUEST regulate itself PLEASE PRINT THIS PAGE AND REVIEW CAREFULLY. better heal better. IT’S A DATE! 6 VALENTINE’S DAY DATE NIGHT IDEAS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you probably fall into one of two buckets - prepared or unprepared. There’s a few things to remember when it comes to the love that surrounds this heart-filled day. Valentine’s Day is just that, just another day. So don’t put too much pressure on yourself when you are trying to plan. Anytime you get to spend with that special person should be enough. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be a great day or night! But if you are still working out the details of how your day of cupid will go down, here’s a few ideas to get you started.

1. GAME NIGHT As kids, we tend to think of game night as a family thing to do. But why not play just as couples? Sometimes we all need time to unwind and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun. A little friendly competition can really create some friendly tension between you and your partner. There are a lot of breweries and coffee shops that could make this an easy night out and a lot of them have game libraries to use so you don’t need to bring your own, unless you want to. If staying in, grab a charcuterie tray, some champagne and your favorite board game and enjoy some one-on-one time.

2. COOKING CLASS A couple that cooks together, stays together, right? Or eats well together! Check out local cooking schools or even local cooking stores for special classes just for Valentine’s Day. Many of them have classes all year round but add a few more during this time of year. The best part about this is that you’ll have a great dinner at the end of the night and probably a few drinks in between. This is also a great one if you are open to doing something NOT on Valentine’s Day. They often have many options around this time and if you are flexible with dates you might be able to find just the right menu!

3. FONDUE AT HOME It seems like fondue restaurants are always the first to book up this time of year but if you are into fondue, it can be done at home too! Order a fondue set if you don’t already have one and purchase pre-cut food items so you don’t have to do a ton of work. Light a fire, lay out some pillows to sit on and pour a couple glasses of wine and enjoy yourself. This is also a fun night for the family if you don’t have a sitter! 4. A STAY AWAY If you think about it at least a little in advance, book a night at a hotel for you and your loved one. Maybe choose a place a little nicer than you might normally stay or try a new spot! Feel free to select one with enticing amenities. Enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant downstairs, a couple’s massage in the spa or a drink at the bar before heading back up to bed. If you are the more quiet type, maybe order room service, rent a movie and cozy into bed. Even enjoy sleeping in the next morning. There’s so many options with a quick night away! 5. P LANETARIUM OR STARGAZING Almost everyone loves looking up at the stars. There’s something about that great, big open sky that is so intriguing. Depending on the weather, you might grab a blanket (or two) two chairs or the bed of a truck, a warm winter cocktail and just look up. There are some really neat apps out there that help you identify the constellations. Or, if you both know them, make a game of who can find the most or the quickest. If sitting outside isn’t in the cards, you might check out a local planetarium (if you have one) where you can spend the evening. 6. VISIT A MUSEUM There are so many museums these days for kids and adults alike. But if you have kids, how often do you visit without them? It’s funny to think of going to a kids’ museum or a history museum in the evening without kids, but believe me, there’s a lot of fun to be had! Experience things without your kids pulling on you, or, if you don’t have kids, pick a place you might not have visited before. Sometimes there are even special evening events. Have a happy Valentine’s Day! atZionsville.com / FEBRUARY 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 21
