Owner Andrew Schnell Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Mariah Krafft

Andrew Schnell, owner of A.J. Schnell Wood Works, a home-based custom woodworking business, has earned a reputation for excellence. “The business is in its fifth year of creating custom wood furniture, home products and gifts,” Schnell says. “I work one-on-one with clients to create completely one-of-a-kind, custom furniture pieces that serve as a focal point in the overall design of their home or business. I also create unique cutting and serving boards that can be custom engraved to add a personal touch. These have become very popular for wedding, anniversary and

housewarming gifts.” Schnell enjoys his work and his loyal clients. “I really like working with clients here in Zionsville,” Schnell says. “Zionsville has a genuine sense of community, and I enjoy getting to meet others and be a part of the community. I am from the small town of Jasper Indiana, and Zionsville has a very similar small-town feeling.” Schnell says he has personal favorite projects.

I call it furniture with a story.” Schnell’s work appeals to a wide audience.

“I enjoy creating large, unique pieces of furniture that allow me to create items that are not only functional, but also beautiful to look at,” he says. “I want to create the piece “One of my favorite types of projects to work on is when a client has a tree or lumber that will make people stop and do a double that has some kind of sentimental meaning take. dining-room tables. I like creating furniture that will be where the family will gather and form memories for years.” Schnell is also a vendor at most of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce’s local shows, including Brick Street Market. “The Zionsville shows are actually the only shows that I participate in,” Schnell says.

“I do this because it is important to me to be an active part of the community that I both live and work in. It also provides me with a great opportunity to meet many of the other local small-business owners. It is a supportive and welcoming community.” Schnell adds that he has made several friends in Zionsville.

“Before I started this chapter of my career, I worked at Eagle Elementary here in Zionsville for about five years,” he says. “I loved working with the kids and their families. This was how I was first introduced to Zionsville, and my wife and I both fell in love with the community.” Schnell has been creating and designing things for as long as he can remember. “Both of my grandfathers worked most of their lives in the furniture industry,” Schnell says. “It is a big part of who I am and how I grew up. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of spending hours in my grandfather’s shop exploring, designing and building. Even today, I make sure to set aside some days to go into the shop without a plan, and to just begin playing around with new ideas. These are the times that I have gotten inspiration for some of my favorite designs.”

Owner Rachel Webster

ZIONSVILLE NUTRITION HUB NEW SHOP SERVES UP HEALTHY SHAKES AND TEAS Writer / Shelly Sack Photographer / Jon Ellegood

When moving from Memphis, Tennessee, to Carmel, Rachel Webster packed her love of sales and entrepreneurial spirit and brought them along to create what became Zionsville Nutrition Hub. Customers can choose between shakes ($8) or teas ($6), with booster add-ons that target key nutrients for help with muscles and the immune system. The theme is fun, with names like Birthday Cake, Brownie Batter, and Elvis, but the focus is nutrition. “They taste good but fit into a healthy pocket,” Webster says. “I want our stores to be what people think of when they think of nutrition.” She opened her first store in Nora across from North Central High School in February of 2020, a mere two months after relocating, and it has been bustling since, often featuring a line to the door. This summer, the unexpected opportunity came to open a second store in a desirable location in Zionsville, sandwiched between 8 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / TownePost.com

two fitness centers. The idea behind Zionsville Nutrition Hub came from a similar store in Memphis that Webster used to frequent. “My favorite shake, and what started all this

craziness, was the Blueberry Muffin,” she says. “I kind of fell in love with it because to me, it is a healthy fast food. It’s quick and easy to grab and go.” The fall menu will have pumpkin flavors, and specialty shake and tea flavors are featured monthly. All shakes stay within the 200 to 250 calorie range, and they have 24 grams of protein and 21 vitamins and minerals. Supplements such as potassium and protein are suggested for those with sore muscles, and while the regular Herbalife brand base is soy, there are also plant bases and whey products. The tea menu received Webster’s special attention during business shutdowns last year, and she focused on creating a loaded tea menu, featuring more than 100 recipes. These include green, raspberry, lemon, peach and pomegranate to name a few, and are paired with a lift-off energy booster that has B vitamins, natural caffeine, vitamin C and a splash of aloe water. “They really have put us on the map in the Indy area for the unique and fun range they TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 9

provide,” Webster says. She jokingly refers to her staff as healthy bartenders, and is quick to point out that they serve up a side of nutrition education along with the drinks.

“Because we serve a healthier product than others in this atmosphere, people want to know what’s in it and why,” Webster says. “Why drink a tea versus a Gatorade? We talk a lot of nutrition. There’s a lot of interaction.” “When my husband asked about moving, I said I really loved the Memphis nutrition place,” she continues. “I loved the product and what they did. We scouted locations over a few visits and began the buildout of the first store, and opened up in the middle of the fun with COVID and did everything we could to stay open. We delivered, offered curbside, and had delivery services like GrubHub. We never closed, just limited our hours, kept our head down and just tried to

stay open. People needed a place to go they could count on, and it worked out well. I saw the Zionsville spot and I couldn’t pass it up.” She describes the Zionsville store as “calm and serene.” The counter, stools and tables, along with the Instagram wall bench, encourage people to sit and relax, with

“I think one of the things people like most about coming in is it’s just a place where people are kind, and they enjoy coming,” Webster says. “We hear stories about people’s kids and lives, and we enjoy talking with our customers. Everybody’s very personable.” Zionsville Nutrition Hub is located at 10895 North Michigan Road, Suite 120 in Zionsville. For more info, visit facebook. com/zvillehub.

Steve Latour, executive director of the Westfield Chamber of Commerce, says the upcoming inaugural Hoosier Chocolate Fest is the result of a simple idea, yet one that has not previously been put into practice locally. “I have been to a couple different chocolate festivals in my day,” Latour says. “I had gone to one down in French Lick and thought it was really cool how they did it down there. I did some research up here, and no one does anything like that here in this region. I looked around and made sure no one else was doing it.”

wanted to do something together that we could promote and work on. We all got together and met, and hammered out the details.” The team reserved space at the Bridgewater Club and decided on February 12 for the inaugural event.

“The concept is that there will be a VIP night on the Friday night before, and then Saturday the 12th we’ll have the actual fest that’s open to the public,” Latour explains, adding that the event will feature live music. “We’ll have an afternoon session and an Last fall Latour took the next step and began evening session. There will be additional space in the building devoted to a mixology demonstration, as well as a chocolate-based cooking demonstration. “Another fun thing is that we’ll have some of the chocolate vendors around the room, so if you like something you can go get more, or get with them for future events and things you may want to do for yourself,” Latour adds. Companies based in Zionsville, Westfield, Tipton County and beyond will appear at the event. “We were very intentional in choosing the name Hoosier Chocolate Fest, and not Westfield Chocolate Fest or something like that, because we’re hoping over the years this will grow, and really become a regional

movie. It’s all coming together and it should be fun.” Additional details including registration and ticket info can be found at hoosierchocolatefest.com.

“We’re hoping it catches on and that we can make it bigger and bigger in the years to come,” Latour says. “It’s really a chance to highlight some outstanding chocolate companies and bakeries here in this region that a lot of people don’t know about.” Interest from vendors has been high since the event team began reaching out to local chocolate makers, according to Latour. “We’ve heard people say, ‘Whoa, this is

LEARN MORE ABOUT PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

In November and December 2021, our readers were introduced to Dr. Aaron Springhetti, DMD of Springhetti Dentistry serving West Carmel, the Village of WestClay and Zionsville. He’s talked about his four-step commitment to patient care: Education; Diagnosis; Attention to Detail and Generosity. In December, Dr. Springhetti spoke about Preventive Dentistry. This month, he helps the reader further understand how the foods and beverages we consume affect our teeth and gums - a key to understanding good oral health and overall health. Here are the basics for understanding simple sugars and acidic beverages:

FOOD TYPES TO LIMIT IN DIET: Food w/ simple sugars-anything that contains fructose(sugar in fruit), galactose(sugar in dairy), or sucrose(table sugar) needs to be moderated. Always refer to the nutrition facts/ingredients section on the packaging;

hygiene regimen. The pH of pure water is 7.0. Water is the best thing you can drink to cleanse your teeth and prevent acid erosion of the enamel. Your family can reduce the acid in the mouth after eating or drinking acidic beverages by simply brushing teeth or thoroughly rinsing your mouth with pure water. It’s even OK to swallow afterward if you wish! Dr. Springhetti gives this advice from an endurance athlete’s perspective; “It is impossible to avoid sugar and acid in training and racing; in fact, it is imperative to optimize your intake of nutrition for performance benefits; however, it is important to drink plenty of water as well not only for rehydration but also to help cleanse your teeth. If you’re an endurance athlete, ask your dentist about prescription toothpaste that you can use after big training days or long races where consumption of sugar and acid is high. Also, a water flossing device should be rudimentary in your oral hygiene regimen whether an athlete or not. There is no better tool to cleanse your mouth.”

Acids cause inflammation in your body - in your gut, your mouth, and acid is just as bad for systemic health as your oral health. • Processed foods, boxed/packaged foods; Because of acid and the resultant cavities • Candy; and, and gum tissue damage due to poor diets • Acidic drinks. These are key and hygiene, fluoride in our city water and contributors to poor oral health. fluoride supplements from your dentist are so important to help strengthen enamel that Studies show enamel starts to demineralize has been compromised from acidic erosion or soften at a pH of 5.5 and below. Citrus Drinks: Lemonade, OJ, etc. 7. Sports Drinks: Gatorade, Powerade 8. Popular alcoholic Drinks like ‘White Claw’: have pH of 3.1!!!

• Demineralization (loss of tooth enamel) generally begins at a pH of 5.5 • A one unit change (i.e. 3.0 to 2.0) in pH is associated with a 10 fold change in the acidity • Battery Acid has a pH of 1.0 • Stomach Acid is between pH 1.5-3.5— think about how important stomach acid is for breaking down your food and degrading harder substances. Some drinks that we ingest are more acidic than stomach acid!!! i.e. Coca Cola(2.8 pH!!) Vitamin Water!? (3.34pH-not very beneficial for your heath-misnomer w/ Vitamin!)

Spend time enjoying natural, whole foods. These are the real deal and are not overly Do your best to avoid, or at least properly processed.
