For Gabby Piccarreta Chaves, owner of Millie Ann’s Boutique at 7149 Whitestown Parkway, names are extremely important. Not only does the name Millie Ann have a four-generation history in her family, but she also shares her own first name with her husband, Indy race car driver Gabby Chaves. As Millie Ann’s Boutique approaches its oneyear anniversary, the couple is enjoying their first year of marriage. “Gabby and I got married on November 2, 2019, and I am changing my last name to Chaves - Millie Ann is a family name that has been passed down through generations,” Chaves explains. “My great grandmother was named Emily, my grandmother was Millie Ann, which is the nickname for Emily, my mother was Teresa Ann and my middle name is Emily.” Chaves and her husband were both raised in South Florida and met through mutual friends while she was attending college in Orlando. “We came to Indiana in May 2013 for my husband’s job in racing,” she says. “In May 2014 we returned to the Indianapolis area and decided to stay. We fell in love with the Whitestown/Zionsville area.” Chaves has always enjoyed fashion and shopping. However, the idea of opening a boutique initially came from her mother, Teresa Ann, who was retired and wanted a new adventure. Sadly, she passed on before Millie Ann’s Boutique was open, but Chaves continued with their plans as a tribute to her mother. “We picked this location mainly because of the windows,” she says. “We loved the natural light to show off the clothing. We completely designed everything together, from the wall placement to the ceiling height to the paint color. We took about six months to plan everything out and went full speed ahead after that. Unfortunately, our plans to open by the holidays last year were put on hold when she became sick atZionsville.com / JANUARY 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 5

and passed away. I continued with her dream by opening Millie Ann’s in her honor in February 2019.” Millie Ann’s Boutique carries a variety of unique clothing lines with sizes ranging from small to triple-extra-large. The boutique used to carry children’s clothing, but the shop’s focus now is entirely on affordable and stylish women’s fashions. Other items available are shoes ranging from size 5 to 10, and gifts such as candles, cards, picture frames and bath bombs. Customers also enjoy the accessories and jewelry the shop carries.

Millie Ann’s Boutique also offers clothing alterations. Although bridal and bridesmaid dresses are excluded, the shop’s in-house seamstress is skilled at altering everyday and special-event garments. Appointments are required for this service. “We always post new products and fun events on social media,” Chaves says. “Our one-year anniversary event will be held on Saturday, February 8th. We will have sale items, giveaways, champagne and morewv. Our customers have been so supportive and we can’t thank them enough. We strive for every shopper to have a relaxing experience, and love when they find items they love.” Visit Millie Ann’s Boutique at 7149 Whitestown Parkway in Zionsville. Getting a great haircut means communicating exactly what you want and telling the barber how you want your hair to look when you leave. In short, you want an excellent listener. At Mitch King’s Noggin Barber, 156 S. 1st Street in Zionsville, the barbers know how to listen, and the clients leave satisfied with their haircuts. King ensures that. King has been cutting hair for many years. He opened Noggin Barber in 2001. He enjoys his work. He also loves to talk about sports with his customers. He may also get you into an excellent discussion about The Beatles. Most importantly, King really knows what he’s doing. “I worked as an owner-operator solo the vast majority of my career, which I prefer,” King says. “But that would change.” He loves working in Zionsville. “Zionsville was not a consideration (for me) to barber,” King says. “It’s a fluke that I’m here today. Consequently, it was the best location possible. Zionsville is a progressive, friendly community with a small-town taste, perfect for growth.” King believes the city has grown tremendously. He loves the positive changes that have happened over the years. “Zionsville now has developed (to become) attractive to all age groups,” King says. “Mostly through food establishments and top schools. Zionsville has a small-town feel, but it is close to Indianapolis.” King noted that he and fellow barbers, John Foster and Joe White, have a wealth of experience cutting hair. “At this time, with the experience of all three barbers, there is nothing new in the procedure of hair cutting,” King says.

“Although some haircuts appear new to the public, for us it may be a combination of two haircuts blending to create one. The hard part haircuts caught on fast. Through the years, I think we agree the bowl cut wore out its welcome!” King enjoys working with Foster and White. “Foster joined Noggin four years ago and Joe two years ago,” King says. “We all three worked together in the past. The transitions could not have been easier. And we all enjoy our own barbering rooms for privacy with our clients. Foster and Joe have lived in Zionsville for many years, and my wife, Tracy, and I live in the Keystone area.”

5 TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

It’s that time of year again — the time when we all start thinking about what we’d like to do more of or be better at in the coming year. Did you know people have been setting New Year’s resolutions for more than 4,000 years! It’s assumed almost everyone has made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. It’s crazy, I know, but if you think about it, even if you fail, it’s a great way to kick off a new year. A resolution is technically something we choose to do, or not to do, but here are a few tips for how you can choose to keep those resolutions in 2020. 1. MAKE A LIST Many people make lists on the daily. Whether it’s a to-do list or shopping list, we like to see things we need to do and

what we’ve completed. It’s a visual thing. Sometimes just having something written down on paper helps you stick to it. It also makes it more real. So write out your resolutions on paper or even better get fancy and frame them! But even without a frame, put it somewhere you’ll see it every day so you are reminded of what you resolved to do. 2. C HOOSE THE RIGHT RESOLUTIONS The top three resolutions most years are related to health and fitness, but does that work for you? It might, but it might not. Don’t feel like you have to pick a resolution based on what everyone else is doing or usually does. Be original. Stay true to you and choose a resolution that really matters to you. If you can really get behind something, you’ll have better success with accomplishing it! 12 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atZionsville.com

3. TRY MINI-GOALS Mini goals or mini resolutions are a great way to reach a big goal with baby steps! It alleviates the making of a larger, terrifying and daunting resolution and instead breaks it up to make it more manageable. Mini goals are easier and typically require less time. Try to set a smaller goal for each month and by the time you complete all 12 months, you’ll have achieved that giant goal you weren’t quite sure you could take on in January. Setting mini-goals will help you accomplish resolutions in a more incremental way and stay on track all year long! 4. HAVE A BUDDY Accountability is a huge part of forging through tough times and keeping our resolutions in the New Year. Doing it on your own can be hard. But you don’t have

to do it all by yourself. Find a friend who has the same goals for the year or similar ones who can keep you motivated when times get tough. Even telling someone your resolutions can keep you accountable. They can ask you how things are going and understand when you need a little pick me up or break. It’s always more fun to do things with friends, and New Year’s resolutions are no different. 5. REWARD YOURSELF Everyone does better with a reward dangling in front of them. Rewards make us all feel good. Maybe if you are working on your food intake, you have a cheat day if you can get through two weeks of staying on track. Perhaps if you resolved to journal every day, once you’ve done it for a month, treat yourself with a cool new pen! If you were trying to give up those coffee shop visits to save more money, treat yourself to one cup of coffee if you stuck to it for 15 days in a row! Once you’ve completed a resolution, no matter how big or small, rewards can continue to help us move towards our goals. It keeps us motivated and reminds us that we are doing a good job. No matter how it goes this coming year, just do your best. Do what works for you and if you need help sticking to something, make sure to ask for help. Just choosing to embrace change or taking on new challenges in the New Year is a huge step for a lot of people and we believe in you! Wishing you the best success in your resolutions and a wonderful 2020!

became the Unit Director of that branch, where he served for seven years.

For those who have volunteered or been a part of Indianapolis area Boys & Girls Clubs, the name Mark Branch is likely a familiar one. Branch first started volunteering at Boys & Girls Club back in the early 80s. He quickly realized that the organization played a crucial role in children’s lives, and he wanted to continue being a part of that positive impact.

“I could tell, six months into the position, that this would be my career for the rest of my life,” Branch says. “I wasn’t quite sure what exactly I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted it to be something with kids. With Boys & Girls Club, I’d found that avenue.”

Branch has served in just about every capacity with the Boys & Girls Club. And, throughout his 35-plus-year-career, only “A friend of mine that had been volunteering eight years have been away from Indiana. suggested that I do the same,” Branch Along the way, his impact has been felt recalls. “I really got hooked and interested in throughout the organization. the kids and serving.” After volunteering for a while in Lebanon, it wasn’t long before Branch got a call about an opening as the program director of the Indianapolis branch of Boys & Girls Club. He jumped at the opportunity and later

Branch served for three years in Cleveland, Tennessee as their Executive Director, overseeing two Boys & Girls Clubs units and serving 1,800 kids. After receiving two merit awards, he moved to South Carolina and directed three more units there. In just atZionsville.com / JANUARY 2020 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 15

three years, he increased those three Units to five units and led a capital campaign which raised $7.5M. Still, Branch missed Indiana and moved back to serve as the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Indianapolis for seven years, overseeing 22 full-time and 90 part-time employees and 12,000 youth in Marion County. More recently in 2006, he served on the Boys & Girls Club’s national staff as the Lead Director managing clubs in the Midwest, Southwest and Pacific-West regions of the country. His latest role is a bit more personal. This fall, Branch was named as the new CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County — bringing him full circle back to an area where he first started volunteering and serving kids.

Branch is excited about the opportunity and believes his decades of experience with the Boys & Girls Club has prepared him well for the CEO role in Boone County. “When this spot became open, I really started looking at my career and what I wanted my legacy to be when I retire,” Branch says. “I wanted to be a part of something that got me into this movement all those years ago — the passion for the kids and the opportunity to take a branch that is already doing well and hopefully take it to the next level.” “We are beyond excited to have Mark serving as our new CEO,” adds Board President Rob Schein. “He has a proven track record of strong leadership and has unmatched experience with the Boys & Girls Club. Boone County – and most importantly the youth of Boone County – will benefit from his leadership.” The job, location-wise, also made sense. Branch and his wife have lived in the Danville area for nearly 20 years and have friends throughout Boone County. The couple is excited to move to Boone County and become immersed in the community this year. “I have a lot of friends in Lebanon, and my wife and I actually first met there,” Branch adds. “We will put our house up for sale and move up to Boone County this spring, and we look forward to being a part of the community here.” New CEO Mark Branch

In just this last year, the Boone County branch finalized a merger that included three unit locations — Lebanon, Whitestown and Zionsville. The branch has seen a significant 60% increase in members over the last decade. All three units serve 450 members daily in before and afterschool programs. At the Lebanon club, specifically, dinner is fed to nearly 100 children, five days a week. All three units also have 3,000 members who take part in sports leagues and summer camps. “These clubs give children a safe place 16 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atZionsville.com

to go and parents an affordable option,” Branch says. “Especially during the summer, when the kids are here and parents are at work. My kids were club kids and loved it. It is a place that the kids have an opportunity to grow and learn, too. This isn’t simply a daycare, we are a youth development organization.” Branch aims to implement and carry out several goals throughout his first full year. He hopes to launch the club into its next phrase and better serve Boone County in 2020 and beyond. “I see us building endowments down the road, a capital campaign, and I see an opportunity to expand our services out

across all of Boone County,” he says. “We already have strong club programs. We have an amazing quality of staff already, too. Really, I just want to add on to that and develop staff training and development. I want to increase collaborations and outreach as well. There are many opportunities to partner with people and organizations. “What I’ve learned is if you are doing your job right, when you leave they won’t really miss you because you’ve helped build up such a strong infrastructure and financial base that great, quality people want to continue working there and build upon that.” Overall, Branch wants Boone County

residents and the kids to know that the future is bright for the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County and they will always serve the community. “This community is blessed to have a great Boys & Girls Club,” Branch says. “This is a place where your kids can be challenged in a positive way and grow up to be productive and responsible people. That is why I am so passionate about it.” The Boys & Girls Club of Boone County administrative office is located at 1575 Mulberry Street in Zionsville. SALT FOR YOUR SOUL

NEW BUSINESS OFFERS SALT THERAPY TREATMENT OPTIONS Writer / Mandi Cheesman Photography Provided

In the mid-1800s, Polish health officials noticed salt mine workers didn’t suffer from the same types of upper respiratory problems and lung diseases as the general population. Officials attributed it to the small particles of salt they breathed in on a regular basis. Fortunately, trekking to underground salt mines is no longer necessary to reap those same health benefits. A short trip to Salt for Your Soul can deliver the same results. In July, Shauna Hale and her husband, Darren, opened Salt for Your Soul after Shauna watched her mother fight, and ultimately lose, a hard-fought battle with stomach cancer.

“I researched and used a lot of alternative treatments to help treat my mom and help ease her pain,” Shauna says. “And I am allergic to most every antibiotic there is, so I also had to find alternative treatments to illnesses for myself.” Salt For Your Soul also gives back to the community by donating a percentage to Prevail Inc. for each of its salt room sessions. Prevail is a local organization that works with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and also serves victims of other crimes. So, the former kindergarten teacher earned an applied neuroscience degree from Butler University and set her sights on a different type of instruction – teaching the lifealtering benefits of salt. 18 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atZionsville.com

“I’m a teacher now, but not inside the four walls of a classroom,” she says. “I was pulled out of the classroom, almost like a magnetic force that pulled me into this.”

SALT THERAPY

Halo is the Greek word for salt, and halotherapy, also called dry salt therapy, is a procedure where pure, pharmaceutical grade salt is heated and ground up in a machine called a halogenerator, according to Shauna. The crushed salt particles, which are 15 times smaller than a human hair, are then dispersed into the air to mimic the microclimate of a salt cave. The particles saturate the respiratory system where they work to remove toxins. This process, Shauna says, helps open and expand the constricted airways allowing her clients to breathe easier. She says the salt also reduces

inflammation throughout the body and helps boost the immune system. “There are plenty of studies I can produce for people, but the proof is in the salt,” Shauna says. “They need to just come and try it out. They will quickly see that the sound of salt is safety.”

Darren and Shauna Hale

And that is Shauna’s biggest goal – to make her clients feel safe. “There aren’t a lot of places left where you can just feel safe,” she says. “And that is what I want people to feel here, from the moment they arrive until they leave.” Shauna says that each person’s healing is important to her and that making her business feel like a healing space is critical. “Everything has personal touches, from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave,” Shauna says. “Every person is extremely important to me.” Children are welcome and encouraged to visit the salt rooms, and Shauna even has rocks, sticks, and shells for them to design Mandalas in the salt while they’re getting their treatments. Up to four people can be in a room at a time. Those visiting Shauna’s other healing therapy, the flotation pods, are encouraged to “let your troubles go down my drain.” The floatation pods are private, specialized pods filled with 10 inches of highly-saturated Epsom saltwater that allow you to float effortlessly on top of the water at near zero-gravity. The water is kept around 94 degrees, so it feels like your skin, and you don’t need to know how to swim because you basically float on top like a cork. “We use 400 pounds of Epsom salt in 100 gallons of water,” Shauna says.

“It is such a relaxing experience, and it allows you to absorb magnesium through the largest organ of our bodies, the skin.” Shauna says the flotation pods also help reduce cortisol levels while raising the body’s endorphins. Even though Shauna, who battled chronic sinus troubles, can personally attest to the fact that she has not had a sinus infection since she started halotherapy, she still battles the ongoing myth that salt is bad for you. “I always hear from people who say they are on a low sodium diet, so they don’t think salt therapies are good for them,” she says. “But that simply isn’t true. Our treatments aren’t ingested, they are inhaled.” Salt is very healing, Shauna says. “Remember your grandma who told you to go gargle with salt water when your throat hurt?” Shauna asked. “That is because salt heals.” But Shauna says the best time to visit either the salt rooms or the flotation device is before you feel bad. “Come see us before you are sick to stay healthy,” she says. “Twenty sessions can boost your immune system for up to a year.” For more information about floatation and halotherapy, visit saltforyoursoul. com. Thanks in part to a façade improvement grant from the Zionsville Architecture Review Committee (ZARC), the Zionsville Lions Club recently completed Phase I of the Lions Clubhouse renovation project. The ZARC awarded Zionsville Lions Club $37,979 in grant money to update the exterior of the clubhouse, which is located at 115 S. Elm Street. The ZARC and Lions Club worked together to upgrade the clubhouse to improve its façade and functionality. Updates include architectural stylings, color palette of the building and entry elements. “We greatly appreciate the professional design input and financial participation in our project by the ZARC,” says Lions Club

President John Wilkins. “The Zionsville Lions Club has served the community for 90 years, 45 of which are from our Elm Street building. These building improvements will support our service to the Zionsville community for many decades.” “When the Town created the façade improvement grant program over a decade ago, its potential was untested since only a handful of communities were facilitating this type of economic development incentive program,” says Mayor Tim Haak. “Downtown tenants such as the Lions Club are fantastic representatives of the community and stewards of their buildings and park. The Town is proud of our longstanding partnership with the Lions Club and the impact of the façade program.” Formed in 2009, the ZARC is an eight22 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atZionsville.com

person organization appointed by the Zionsville Town Council and is responsible for awarding grant funding sourced from the Food & Beverage Tax to facilitate its mission. The ZARC seeks to partner with building owners within the downtown to enhance the character of the community. To date, over 25 buildings have requested to work with the ZARC to generate enhancements that benefit the entire community.
