L.A. Cafe Owner, Jessica Averitt

FAMILY-OWNED L.A. CAFE HAS SERVED ZIONSVILLE, WHITESTOWN COMMUNITIES FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ryan Woodall

L.A. Cafe Owner Jessica Averitt has seen her restaurant grow dramatically over the last several years thanks to a wide variety of delicious menu items and a loyal customer base. L.A. Cafe, 4 South Main Street, Whitestown has become a favored destination for both lunch and dinner patrons since it opened. “It’s been LA Cafe since we first opened in May of 2002, in a historic building in downtown Whitestown,” Averitt says. “After multiple owners (in the same location), I’ve owned LA Cafe since June

2011. A lot of people think it stands for Los Angeles, but it’s my father’s initials: Larry Averitt.” Averitt noted that both Whitestown and Zionsville residents have kept L.A. Cafe booming.

Parmesan Encrusted Pork Loin,” Averitt says. “It’s a unique take on Indiana’s favorite: the pork tenderloin. Our most popular sandwich is the LA Cafe Cheeseburger. The half-pound fresh burger can be custom built with toppings, from sauteed mushrooms and bacon to jalapeños.”

“The response from our local communities has been great, and we see that when we participate in local events like the Whitestown Brewfest, Savor Lebanon and Polo at Sunset at Hickory Hall Polo Club,” Averitt says.

L.A. Cafe also has a delicious Hand Breaded or Grilled Chicken Sandwich with fries, a Patty Melt and a Reuben Sandwich, among many other lunch options. Numerous Appetizer selections include Stuffed Mushrooms and Crab Cakes.

The outstanding menu has also been a large reason for L.A. Cafe’s success.

“Our Shrimp Cocktail is our most popular appetizer,” Averitt adds. “It’s all about the sauce. On Tuesdays, we get a crowd for the ‘buy one, get one’ shrimp cocktail.”

“The most popular dinner entree is our 6 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atZionsville.com

Dinner entrée selections include a Center Cut Filet, a 12 ounce New York Strip and Grilled Salmon, among other menu choices. “My favorite menu item is our Prime Rib that we feature on Fridays and Saturdays for dinner,” Averitt says. “We slow roast it overnight and then serve at the perfect temperature.”

décor and service. “At L.A. Cafe, we are a family, and we like to treat our customers like they are family too,” Averitt says. The motorcycle theme at L.A. Cafe has also been a big draw.

“It stems from my father’s motorcycle shop, LA Cycles, which is also located in L.A. Cafe also has great drinks to rev you up. Averitt added that she and her family have long-time roots in Zionsville. “My brother and his family live in Zionsville, and both of my parents grew up in Zionsville,” Averitt says. “It’s fun to get to know customers that also know my family,

including my parents’ gym teacher from Zionsville High School.” Averitt loves the support she receives from her fellow business owners. “Both Zionsville and Whitestown communities support local businesses and community growth,” Averitt says. “I love how the residents of Zionsville and Whitestown enjoy supporting small businesses like us. A big part of our success is tied to the catering we do with local businesses and non-for-profits, along with weddings at Zyntango Farm and other reception venues throughout the area.” L.A. Owner, Dana Altum

Altum’s Garden Center Celebrates 60 Years of Providing Beautiful Landscapes in Zionsville Writer / Carla Taylor Photographer / Ron Wise

When you notice a neighbor’s beautiful landscape or a particularly creative seasonal porch container, you probably aren’t surprised to hear it was designed by Altum’s. Their passion for plants comes through in everything they do. That’s because, as their tagline says, “Plants make everything better.” Known for their quality plant materials and treating customers like family, Altum’s Garden Center has been part of the Zionsville area landscape for the past 60 years. Altum’s originally started as a landscaping company in 1958 by current owner Dana Altum’s dad, Bob, a landscaper who

graduated from Purdue. In 1981, Bob had the opportunity to purchase an old grower greenhouse, which led to Altum Gardens being opened in 1982. At that time, the idea of a garden center was new. The idea caught on with the community, and Altum’s quickly outgrew the facility. Though Dana never thought she’d be a landscaper, she went to Purdue where she graduated in horticulture business management in 1985 and came into the Garden Center business. Altum’s moved to its current location in 1996. Bob was a visionary who saw the growth of Indianapolis suburbs moving north and purchased their current 23 8 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atZionsville.com

acres. At the time, it was one of the only businesses located that far north on Michigan Road. In designing the new center, Bob was inspired by garden centers in England. Coming to the family and pet-friendly garden center to shop is an experience. It’s a place to walk around, get inspired, and have a cup of coffee. Kids love to look for the cat that lives on site or play on the playground. Both experienced and aspiring gardeners know this is a very relaxed, fun place to be, with someone to talk to, to learn from and to get their questions answered. “Everyone who works here is passionate about plants and making sure everyone can be successful,” Dana says. “Customers use us

as a resource for information because they know if we don’t know, we’ll find out.” She says it’s somewhat similar to an Apple store, where you don’t go just to buy a computer but go looking to learn from an expert. Their customers are those who are discerning about their gardening and either want the planting done for them or are interested in learning. They see plants as an investment that appreciates and keeps getting better over time. “Our biggest competition right now is time,

people are busy busy busy,” Altum says. For busy parents, you can shop ahead and have curbside delivery of your plants and decorations while you and the kids stay in the car. Or, you can stay at home and shop in your pajamas, and Altum’s will deliver their beautiful plants to you. With their Four Seasons of Color program, they even provide beautifully pre-arranged drop-ins for porch pots — so you can look like the experts on Instagram or Pinterest even if you aren’t one.

on their plant material. They can do that, Dana says, because they work with local growers, are very selective about the quality of the plant materials and “pick the plants we know you will be successful with here.” And with their Plant Doctor hotline (just email plantdoctor@altums.com), they can help catch any problem before it goes wrong.

Education is a big part of what they do. In addition to classes and workshops, “we will ask lots of questions about where you will put the plants, making sure it will be successful where you plant it, and making They’ll even come out and do the planting for you, as well as offer a three-year warranty sure the soil is prepared properly.”

Just like with their plants, they have been walking through the many seasons of life with their customers as well. Over the years, customers come in for different needs and projects and share pictures of their plantings as well as their families as they grow.

Though their business is seasonal, with 65 percent of their business being done in the 10 weeks of summer, Altum’s is open year-round. They have 20,000 square feet of covered shopping, including their glass conservatory. “In the wintertime, this is nothing but a better place to be,” Dana says.

Owner, Kim Estep

Writer / Julie Young Photographer / Kerch Creative

Kim Estep is one smart cookie with a recipe for success that has worked for her for the past 25 years — be self-reliant and, whenever possible, be self-employed. “I’ve been a realtor. I ran a daycare and I have been a nanny in addition to raising my own children,” she says. “When the kids I was looking after no longer needed me, I knew it was time to try something else.” As a creative person with a passion for painting, Estep taught herself to make and decorate fancy, bakery-style sugar cookies. Before long, she began selling her wares out of her home and as her reputation grew, so

did her customer base. Five years later, she made the decision to downsize to a smaller home – a move that threatened to crumble her cookie empire. “I always said I wanted to open my own shop at some point and with my youngest child graduating from high school this year, now was the time to do it,” she says. The result is Kim’s Cookie Café and it is truly a labor of love. Estep says it took some time to find the right premises for her business, get approval from the town, and obtain the equipment that she needed, but thanks to the kindness of friends, family and even a few strangers, her dream has become a reality. The grand opening was held on November 10 and with nearly 700 12 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atZionsville.com

customers coming out to welcome the confectioner to the community, it’s safe to say Kim’s Cookie Café is off to a great start. “It was amazing,” Estep says. “It was so crowded that we had trouble walking around.” Kim’s Cookie Café features custom creations, favorite flavors as well as original recipes such as the Kevin Bacon maple cookie made for a friend who has a crush on the famous actor. There are cookies infused with five shots of espresso, peanut butter and jelly treats, as well as Keto and vegan options for those with special dietary needs. “We also have a raw bar of edible cookie dough which is very popular,” Estep says.

“It is a pasteurized egg product that has the blessing of the board of health so it is not only safe for children but pregnant moms as well.” Estep says it is so satisfying to hear customers proclaim her cookies the best they have ever eaten or watch as she puts the finishing touches on a custom-made treat. No matter if she is assembling a cookie platter for a party or creating something for a special occasion, she views each cookie as a brand new coloring book and her icing tips as a sharp set of crayons that are ready to tackle the task. “It’s always so satisfying when I can replicate something for one of my customers. From baby showers to the Beatles we do it all so come by, call or send us a message and place your order today,” Estep says. Kim’s Cookie Café is located at 70 East Hawthorne Street in Zionsville. 3 WAYS TO START THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT Writer / Shelly Bergman Photography Provided

There are lots of ways to start the New Year off right. Sometimes it’s hard to start when you have no idea where to begin. Here are a few ways to help you get out of a funk any time of the year, but are especially important before starting New Year’s resolutions.

1. PLAN My most popular articles are about planning, and I’m realizing now, it’s not just because people are trying to do it better but also because it’s what helps all types of people to accomplish their goals and how they live their lives. I carve time out each Sunday to work on my calendar, which will keep me on schedule for what needs to get done for the week. The calendar helps make sure I stick to a routine for my life. Routine is what makes me feel calm, so making sure we’re balanced with extra circulars and home life is key.

2. WRITE Writing consistently keeps me on a roll. Writing is an amazing outlet for anxiety. Writing down plans, fears, hopes and lists gets things out of your brain so you can make room to breathe. I’m also lumping in reading here. The best writers are constantly reading and so I focus on, not only listening to podcasts during my free time, but reading more books. Slow down on social media and only use it consciously at your desktop in order to have more time for being present and reading.

3. LOVE

family) that I’m interested in watching movies on the weekends but during the week I’ll be writing, reading or playing games with my family before bed. Realizing what kind of selflove works best in caring for your body and mind is something you might have to work on but it will be worth it once you do. Because I know that everyone is different, I’ve asked some local moms how they shift gears for the New Year. Here’s what they had to say:

“I packed on a massive amount of weight during the six years that I had five children. I’m constantly preaching self-love and making I tried doing everything at once: adding in sure to put yourself before your family and exercise, changing diet and eliminating my friends so you are better able to love them. trouble foods and beverages. I failed on day Taking the right actions for self-love is also two. I recently started by taking on one problem key here. In general, for me, watching shows at a time and I’m succeeding. It took me six at night is a bad use of time. It often causes me years to gain this weight and develop bad to be angry or sad right before bed which in habits and practices, I can’t expect to lose it all turn affects my sleep behavior. I’m not giving at once and get out of this in one swoop.” our TV away to accomplish better habits but -Katy Mann of Indy with Kids putting a boundary in place (and telling my

14 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atZionsville.com

“For a quick fix, I tend to escape into a great movie. It’s nice to live in someone else’s world for a while. If it’s a deeper and lingering issue, I put it on paper and get to work dissecting it. I’m a problem solver by nature, so breaking things down to understand them better is how I shift my mindset.” -Sierra Holmes of Eclectic Kurves “When I’m in a funk, I just like to go back to things that inspire me. Luckily, I’m inspired by organization and listmaking, so I make that the first thing I do.’ -Brittney Mason of The Pretty Plus “Right now, for instance, my kids have been home sick with the flu, I’m fighting it off, yet I have a deadline to get a feature documentary out of my edit suite and out the door. After returning home from vacation, the last thing I actually want to do is nose to the grind, but I know I have to. When I’m spinning my wheels, I go to bed, take a walk. Those are temporary fixes. If the funk is of a large proportion, like the one I am in right now, I make a goals list of the things I want to accomplish after this is done. That list is what I am working towards. It gives me an incentive to get to this finish line so I can focus my effort on something that will give me joy.” -Kathryn Dickson of Kathryn Anywhere “I like to make a list of things I’m looking forward to or want to accomplish. And if I can’t think of anything, I realize it’s time to get something on the calendar. This year, I have nothing specific planned for summer and it was messing up my ability to daydream so I got out the map and planned our trip to PA with the kids. We looked up places to visit and stuff to do. Now I’ve got something to look forward to, goals to work toward and activities I’m saving for.” -Katie Ruvalcaba of Ruvalcademy ‘My go-to way of resetting myself is usually a few days of self-care and self-love that consists of really good hot yoga classes, daily meditations (even just five minutes or so), consciously seeking fresh air (walk outside, sit on our screened-in porch and read or go to my family’s lake house). It’s all about flipping your perspective.” -Greta Snell of The Moon and She’ “Every year I choose a word to focus on. This year it is peace. Past years have included: surrender, beauty, perspective and gratitude. It’s powerful to see life through that one lens every day for a whole year.’ -Ali Wren of Ali Wren atZionsville.com / JANUARY 2019 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / 15

A KING’S ART

ZIONSVILLE ARTIST ANN KING REFLECTS ON 18 YEARS OF SUCCESS FOR HER STUDIO & GALLERY

Writer / Carla Taylor Photographer / Brandy Hornback

After 18 years, A King’s Art Studio & Gallery is still going strong. Change today is happening so fast, it can make your head spin. We have seen titans of industry tumble and fall, yet many small businesses have been riding the waves and making it look easy.

A King’s Art owner, Ann W. King, knows a thing or two about continuous reinvention and figuring it out, no matter what comes her way. “It is important to me that my studio and gallery has lasted for 18 years, even through the recession,” she says. “Many others did not.” King is not your traditional artist. has great artistic talent that is evident when you enter her studio. Each piece has been crafted with heartfelt emotion and a lifetime of perspective. And for Ann, each of her pieces – whether acrylic, watercolor, fine handmade jewelry or mixed media - is very much a labor of love. King did not begin her career as an artist. She doesn’t come from a family of artists. In fact, in middle school, King shares, “My art

“My last big job was president and CEO of Brebeuf Jesuit High School,” King says.

Though only Jesuit priests have held this position before and since, and she was not an educator, King was voted in and trusted to run the school for almost two years in between two priests. This was pretty While attending Ball State for a business remarkable, King says, “because I am both a degree, a friend who was an art major saw one of King’s drawings. But her husband was very supportive and told her he knew she could make it work. “Even though my career seems varied, in reality, I’ve always been selling,” King says. “First in retail, then in politics selling the philosophy of the person running for office and now art.” And so it made sense that part of how she made it work was by representing up to 12 other juried artists for several years. King now represents three juried artists, who’s artwork can also be seen at her studio. And she is now an award-winning artist specializing in gold and silver

jewelry and painting in acrylic, pastel, watercolor, pen and pencil. Her jewelry and artwork have won awards at juried shows throughout the state. She has received Best of Show in Metalsmithing and Honorable Mention in acrylic and watercolor multiple times. “It has been very exciting to have my art accepted by people, by jurors, art galleries and museums, and to have people buy them,” King says. “I’m so grateful to people that like what I do.”

He has a lot of coaching experience. “I was the Avon High School Girls’ Head Cross Country Coach for 14 years, and assistant coach for two years and the Avon High School Girls’ Head Track and Field Coach for 10 years and assistant for five years, before spending this past fall season as an assistant coach for the Carmel High School Boys’ Cross Country team,” Rosebrock says.

Before joining Zionsville High School, Rosebrock taught special education at Avon High School for 15 years. “I have known former Zionsville Boys’ Head Track and Field Coach Gabe Porras personally and professionally for most of our respective coaching careers, and when he stepped down from coaching track and field, he got in touch with me to see if I was interested in interviewing to replace him,” Rosebrock says. He can’t wait to start his new job. “The Zionsville Track and Field program has a great culture and tradition with experienced and passionate coaches and supportive administrators and parents,” Rosebrock says. “I am very excited to take over at a program in a school district and community such as Zionsville.” 20 / ZIONSVILLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atZionsville.com

Goals have already been set for this year. “Our goals will continue to be for athletes to improve in their respective events, and advance into the postseason, as well as compete for Invitational, HCC Conference and postseason team championships, all while exhibiting the behavioral expectations present in the ZCHS Athletics Honor Code,” he says. Rosebrock noted there are a lot of great athletes he will be working with. “Trey Arnold (pole vault), Jesus Garcia (distance), Zach Roberts (hurdles), Joe Romanyk and Zach Woerner (sprints) are just a few of our returning athletes we expect to stand out this season,” Rosebrock says. Rosebrock, as you’d imagine, is passionate about the sport. “Track and field and coaching are among

my favorite things to read about and learn more about by attending professional development opportunities, such as certification courses and clinics,” he says. Even though he has a busy schedule, Rosebrock still finds time for family. His wife, Carrie, is the English Secondary Department Head for Brownsburg Community School Corporation. They have a seven-year-old daughter, Grace, and a three-year-old son, William. Rosebrock is thrilled about the upcoming season. “We just began conditioning and have really good numbers coming out so far,” he says. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the boys on our team more as we get closer to the season.” Meanwhile, new Head Girls Track Coach Drake Sterling is ready for his new role at a school he is already comfortable at.

have worked and lived in Zionsville for the past eight years with my family. I am proud to call it my second home.” He is excited about taking over as a coach for the team.

“I am incredibly excited to be taking over,” Sterling says. “The program has a rich history of success, especially in the most “I have been with Zionsville High School recent years. This has been due to some as an assistant track and cross country great coaching in the past and excellent coach since 2010,” Sterling says. “Prior support from the athletic staff at the school. to that, I worked with Noblesville High It would be a dream scenario for anyone to School as an assistant coach for two years. I take over a team like this.” Sterling says the program has flourished over the years and hopes to continue that success this season. “Team wise, I want to continue to be a top team in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference,” he says. “I think for a school our size, it’s impressive to stay competitive with teams like Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern. Looking back five to ten years ago, that wasn’t the case, but we’ve worked hard to get the program to where it is.” He noted he has impressive athletes to

work with. “Individual-wise, I think we have a handful of athletes or relays who will be in the mix to win a State Championship,” Sterling says. “Ella Robinson was second at the state meet in the 300m hurdles two years in a row and returns as a senior. Katelyn Wasson and Lauren Rinehart lead a distance group that just finished as State Runner-Up in cross country, both of whom have been All-State before. We also have a number of super talented freshmen who will be wildcards for us, and we have some really good up-andcoming pole vaulters who I’m expecting growth from.” Sterling, who is busy with his son and daughter when he’s not at school, says he enjoys his work. “I have had a passion for track since I began running competitively when I was 11 years old,” Sterling says. “I ran in high school, and in college, as well as professionally. Track and Field has taught me so many lessons over the years, and I continue to see it positively influence youth through great character building as it has for me.”
