RUN(317)

Celebrating Indy through running and revelry Writer / Jon Shoulders Photos provided by Run(317)

This year’s RUN(317) event is much more than just a series of mini-marathons for locals to get a little exercise. According to Jeff Graves, owner of Vision Event Management and organizer of the event, it’s a way for Indy residents to get more closely connected to their surroundings and celebrate the city’s unique neighborhoods, bars and restaurants. Graves launched RUN(317) four years ago and says the event has grown markedly each year, currently consisting of five Thursday evening races in separate Indy

neighborhoods, starting in May, that feature music and free beverages at the finish line. Each race is partnered with a local charity, and the event has raised almost $47,000 since 2014. This year’s local charities include Partners in Housing, Energy Krazed, School on Wheels, Kids’ Voice of Indiana and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “The nice thing about our event is that it’s for all abilities and it’s all about having a good time,” says Graves, former executive director of the Indy Mini Marathon. “We get tons of walkers and first-timers. We take people through neighborhoods that they had no idea about and have never been to. We want to celebrate the places and 6 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / APRIL 2018 / WestfieldMag.com

charities that are unique to Indianapolis.” Even the distance of each race is a tribute to Indy, at exactly 3.17 miles. Graves started small in the event’s first year, holding a single race in Fountain Square and raising money for Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. More than 900 people showed up, and by the time the following year rolled around he’d added two additional races in the Broad Ripple and Mass Ave districts. Carmel Arts & Design District and Monument Circle races were added in 2016, and this year’s five races are spread throughout the summer and early fall.

Individuals can sign up for single races, a three-race mini-series or all five races, and those who register for either of the latter receive a free limited edition pullover shirt. Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. is the 2018 title sponsor, and this year Graves enlisted Athletic Annex and Brooks Sports, Inc. to host a V.I.P. area for each race. “Everybody gets two free beers after the race and a commemorative medal and a lot of times it turns into a dance party on the street,” says Graves, a Ball State grad who launched Vision Event Management in 2006 and specializes in planning and logistics for running events of all sizes. “The participants absolutely love the event and they’re so passionate about it because it’s celebrating the 317 area code.” RUN(317) has sold out every year since it began, and while Graves has received massive interest in expanding the event further, he feels five races spread throughout the city provides plenty of variety for Indy residents. “We picked Thursday nights because it’s kind of a kick-off to the weekend,” he adds. “And for first-time marathon runners, it’s a great way to get introduced to running or walking and have a tour of the different unique neighborhoods of the city at the same time.” While RUN(317) races are generally geared toward those over 21, Graves says he’s seen a wide range of age groups register over the years, with the average age being 37, and those under 21 are free to participate. “We didn’t want it to be a typical Saturday morning run at 8:00 a.m.,” Graves says. “We start at 7:00 p.m. and have a fun post-race party that leads into the opportunity for people to go out to the bars and restaurants in the part of town their race is in, which maybe they don’t get to that often.” This year’s race schedule includes The Circle on May 17, Broad Ripple race on June 14, Mass Ave race on July 19, the Carmel race on Aug. 30 and the Fountain Square race on Oct. 11. KAY DELULLO IS LIVING HER DREAM ON WILD FEATHER FARM

Writer / Jane VanOsdol Photographer / Ron Wise

Entrepreneur Kay DeLullo has a can-do attitude that just won’t stop. It does on occasion, she admits, get her into a bit of trouble but is the key to her day-to-day success of living life. DeLullo is the former owner and chef of DeLullo’s Trattoria in Cicero but sold the restaurant to an employee to focus on developing her 40-acre Wild Feather Farm in Westfield into a sustainable business. And developed it she has. MOVING TO THE FARM In April 2006, DeLullo and her husband Steve Bennett moved to the farm to pursue their dream. Thanksgiving weekend of 2006 tragedy struck when Bennett was killed in a car crash. At that point DeLullo had to decide if she would remain on the farm or move. “I didn’t want to give up on my dream,” she says. So she stayed. Over the years, DeLullo has made her living from the farm by developing a dizzying array of innovative ventures: • Boarding horses • Breeding Barock Pinto horses • Breeding and selling Hungarian Mangalitsa wooly pigs • Growing and selling organic produce from her 60 x 60 plot • Processing and selling maple syrup from her maple trees • Raising 29 chickens and selling free-range eggs • Boarding all the llamas for the Hamilton County 4-H Llama Club The property perfectly supports all of these activities because it contains pasture, woods with maple and nut trees, and a 2-acre pond. Long-term Hamilton County residents may remember that In the 1960s and 1970s Wild Feather Farm was known as the Hillside Beach Club and Buckeye Campground. The water slide and cabins from that era still remain on the property today. ADAPTING TO HER CIRCUMSTANCES DeLullo has transformed into a jill-of-all-trades as she tackles all the chores necessary to keep a farm thriving. “I didn’t come from a farm family,” she says. “So, If you don’t have someone doing it for you, you learn how to do it.” DeLullo has figured out how to put in roads through her property, build corrals and other structures, fix farm equipment, grow organic produce, process maple syrup and raise pigs, horses, chickens and assorted other animals. “I love building things. I love creating things,” she says. When she doesn’t know how to do something, she asks someone to teach her, looks it up online or reads about it. At times she hires help for big projects but does much of the work by herself. She’s also a big believer in the bartering system and uses it frequently.

“I figure you have zero percent chance of getting something if you don’t ask,” DeLullo says. “You have a 50 percent chance if you ask.” As for the future, DeLullo admits to not being a big planner. “I like the future to uncover itself,” she says. But she does have a dream of sharing her farm more with others by doing farm tours so people can see a working farm that is run in more of an old-school way. She sees how others — both people and animals — relax when they’re on the farm and says it’s a bit like being in a “time warp.” With so much going on at Wild Feather Farm, how does she keep track of it all? Her husband’s death changed her perspective. “I’m hyperaware of everything around me,” she says. “I don’t know how to explain it. I notice an ant on a log. I notice a leaf over here. It’s facing your mortality and appreciating what you have, whether it’s a lot or a little. I’m very grateful to be able to do what I want.” To connect with Kay DeLullo, follow her Facebook page at facebook.com/kdkph/. Call her at 317-258-4663 for information on her horses and pigs and to purchase her free-range eggs, organic produce or maple syrup. The farm is located at 2109 SR 38 East Westfield.

WOMEN’S HEALTH: TAKE CONTROL OF BREAST CANCER

Dr. Ludwig speaking with a patient.

For women in the United States, breast cancer is the most common cancer, behind skin cancers, and it’s the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Breast cancer is often curable if detected early, and that’s why regular screening tests and self-examinations should be a vital part of your health and wellness routine.

WHAT HAPPENS IF BREAST CANCER IS DETECTED? If breast cancer is detected, you’ll work with your care team – which includes specialists such as breast surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists – to develop a treatment plan.

TLC, Total Lawn Care, Inc. was founded in 1989 by Terry Jungels and Mark Cavin. They had two goals when they started the business. One was to provide a Professional Service using professional products and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at a reasonable price. The second was to enjoy what they do and provide a superior service. “When we started this business we used Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which allowed us to minimize the amounts of pesticides we used as well as the fertilizers,” Jungels says. “Over time, we have evolved into an organic approach. We are reducing the nitrates and using more biology and less chemistry.” Even when companies use “organic” fertilizers they have to put down a large amount to get to a certain level of nitrogen. It has been shown that a turf plant might only use a small percentage of what is applied and the remaining runs off, vaporizes (ammonification) or turns into nitrates. TLC is trying to build the soil so that it can utilize the nitrogen in the soil and metabolize the products they use. The lawn care company adds a variety of nutrients and biology into the soil with its applications. “We do this to build the carbon and allow the turf to prosper in a more organic soil,” Jungels says. “We want to create some sustainability in the soil to help keep your lawn consistent and looking good. By doing this, we can reduce the amounts of nitrogen we put down.” TLC uses five treatments throughout the year, fewer than many of the other lawn care companies out there. Occasionally, some of the newer lawns or neglected lawns may need a little more, and TLC can always add to the program. TLC recommends good cultural practices like mowing high, watering correctly and aeration to also reduce the amounts of fertility and pesticides needed.

TLC separates its weed controls and fertilizers so they can target the weeds and reduce the total square footage where herbicides are applied. The company uses products like imidacloprid and bifenthrin for insects and grubs. The products are used in pet care for flea and worm control as well as food storage areas and are safe when used properly. “Our staff is professional,” Jungels says. “We have had many of our technicians with us for more than five years, some

more than 20 years. We train throughout the year, and the technician on your lawn will be there on a consistent basis so they can monitor any changes they see. This continuity is important because each year and each season is different. Each year temperatures, dryness, rainfall, humidity, length of season all have an effect on how the lawn responds. As a local company with professional technicians, an Agronomist on staff and a solid relationship with manufacturers, distributors and researchers, we can

modify what we are doing very quickly to provide optimal results.” TLC still has many clients from when they first started up nearly 30 years ago. “We have moved into taking care of their children and other family members,” Jungels says. Call TLC today at 317-638-1862 for a free estimate, or visit them online at tlctotallawncare.net for more information.

GLE ANERS FUNDRAI SER PULLS OUT ALL THE STOPS TO RAI SE MONEY FOR YOUTH HUNGER PROGRAMS Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Ron Wise

It’s time for the fifth Annual Wine Women & Shoes Event Benefiting Gleaners Food Bank Indiana Youth Programs. The Gleaners fundraiser and massive shopping extravaganza will be held May 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m, at the Lucas Estate in Carmel, 1143 116th Street Carmel, IN. Wine Women and Shoes is a nationwide fundraising concept introduced in the Indy area almost five years ago. Last year’s Gleaners Wine Women & Shoes raised more than $345,000. This year, Gleaners is aiming for $400,000 - enough to provide 1.2 million meals. That sounds like a lot of money, but one in five Hoosier children does not have

enough to eat. That’s why Wine Women & Shoes raises funds to support Gleaners’ Youth Programs. Three programs make up the youth hunger initiative — BackSacks, School-Based Pantries and Summer Meals for Kids. BackSacks’ Weekend Food for Kids is designed for elementary aged children who may not have enough to eat between school lunch on Friday and breakfast on Monday. Meals are kid friendly, easy to open and require no cooking. School-Based Pantries operates in 53 schools, two of which are in Hamilton County. These pantries provide food for students and their families. Some are open year-round. The Summer Meals for Kids program has INDY METRO / APRIL 2018 / TownePost.com

two components, Summer BackSacks and Family Meal Boxes. Tickets for the event are already on sale. The price is $200 each and gets you into a fun experience, including wine tasting, delicious food bites and unique shopping opportunities. A variety of vendors will be there featuring their merchandise including clothing, jewelry, perfume, beauty products and much more. Plenty of other fundraising opportunities await at the event. Shoe Guys, a crowd favorite, will once again be on hand at the event. More than 20 local guys who are local celebrities, business owners and community leaders, have each committed to raising at least $2,500. The goal for the entire group is $50,000. Guests and fans can vote for their favorite shoe guy and donate to help him

win. The Shoe Guy who raises the most will be named “Sole Man of the Year.” The Shoe Guy who receives the highest number of donations is crowned Mr. Congeniality. Not only will the Shoe Guys be mingling to get donations and votes, they’ll be on hand to serve guests wine or other refreshments and highlight merchandise for sale. “It’s a great cause and a fun way to get involved and give back,” says Shoe Guy and Lake City Bank Branch Manager, Whitney Hamilton, Jr. “I’m amazed at the number of kids affected by hunger, especially during the summer.” Hamilton says he’s a formidable competitor and he plans on going head to head with fellow Shoe Guy and racecar driver, Kristian Aleixo. “He keeps talking smack, but I’m very competitive and I’m going to beat him, hands down,” Aleixo vows. “But mostly, I want to raise money to bring more attention

to childhood hunger. I can relate to it, because after my mom passed when I was 13, I was homeless until age 18.”

The Shoe Guys aren’t the only attraction. Besides all the great shopping, there will be lots of other exciting opportunities to win great prizes.

While some Shoe Guys prepare to duke it out in a little friendly competition, one Shoe “Guests look forward to some of the same traditions every year for the event, but we Guy is doing it for the love of fundraising. keep it fresh by offering new and creative opportunities to engage the guests and raise “I love fundraising. Pacers Athletic Center President Evan Suttner.

PACERS ATHLETIC CENTER OFFERS YOUTH SPORTS CAMPS & CLINICS Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing . Photographer / Amy Payne

he Pacers Athletic Center, formerly Jonathan Byrd’s Fieldhouse, is an 88,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art indoor athletic facility that offers “a little bit of everything,” according to Evan Suttner, President of the facility. “We’re not just here for league players,” Suttner says. “We want to serve every kind of player.”

Ultimately, Suttner moved back to Carmel with his wife Lauren and started a training business on the south side. Then he met Brandon Lafferman, who at the time was running Indiana Primetime Sports. Within a few months, Suttner and Lafferman merged what they were doing, then were hired in 2016 by the Pacers organization — Lafferman as CEO of the Pacers Athletic Center and Suttner as President.

And it starts young. The Smaller Baller league is designed to get four to 7-year-olds used to dribbling and being on the court. Then there are youth, teen and adult leagues.

Primetime, a professionally coached group of boys and girls teams that play in the Indy Youth Basketball League (IYBL), is their primary in-house team program for 2nd to 8th graders. The IYBL, the largest in the “Whatever your ability, we’ve got something state, is divided into multiple divisions, matching players skill-wise to ensure for you,” promises Suttner, a native of competitive games and avoid blowouts. “This schedule allows players to keep a ball in their hands and continue to develop their skills throughout the year,” Suttner says. The Grand Park Select teams (open to all levels) and the Grand Park Premier teams (for experienced athletes in grades 5-11 who want to play in tournament-based AAU travel teams) are options. No teams use parent coaches. “It’s a fair, balanced way of looking at where kids should play on the floor so it’s not the coach’s son who’s always bringing the ball up the court,” Suttner says. “Our coaches don’t teach a lot of set plays but more how to play the game, since that’s the philosophy we built the program on.” The Pacers Athletic Center hosts a variety of camps, but the three they run in-house include the all-ages Primetime Skills and Drills Camp, The All Sports Camp, and the Primetime Basketball Elite Camp (each are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays).

The Primetime Camp focuses on skill development. Mornings are spent doing ball handling, passing and shooting, while afternoons are devoted to competitive play. “We keep a running tally in how our teams are doing in various events to make it fun and competitive,” Suttner says. The All Sports Camp introduces campers to basketball, kickball, football, soccer and ultimate frisbee. Both the Primetime and All Sports Camps are offered multiple times throughout June and July. The Primetime Basketball Elite Camp is for A- and B-level players. Though it also focuses on skill development, this camp (run only once in July) teaches students about specific aspects of play they will use in games. “We do skill work in the morning, a leadership lecture at lunch, then show them game film so they can see what we taught them in the morning applied in a game,” Suttner says. “That way it starts to click. The afternoon is taking the things they learned in the morning and applying it in a gamelike setting.” The spring and summer training clinics are one-hour sessions that focus on a variety of things. They have an all-around skills group where players work on a little bit of everything. In addition, they offer a guards training group to teach players how to attack the basket and a shooting group to work on proper form. The Jr. NBA named the Pacers Athletic Center part of its Flagship Network, a select group of 15 of the best in-class youth basketball programs that share the Jr. NBA’s vision for how the game should be taught and played. WestfieldMag.com / APRIL 2018 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 27

“We want to give kids a positive experience so that they can grow their love for the game,” says Suttner, noting that they help youth develop their skills both on and off the court by teaching them to be both a good player and a good teammate. “These kids will not all play in college or the NBA, but they could have a career that revolves around basketball if that’s what they love. We give them an opportunity to be around the game as often as they want to be.”

ClosER, fastER care is here.

The Pacers Athletic Center was selected to host the Jr. NBA World Championship for the top 14 and under teams from around the world (tourney will feature boys and girls divisions). The Midwest Regional will be held in June. Those winners will then play in Orlando in a global tournament in August.

VINTAGE CRAFTS

E SMANSHIP CROSS CUT VINTAGE DESIGNS BUILDS UNIQUE FURNITURE MADE TO LAST

Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Brian Brosmer

To fourth-generation carpenter Tabb Adams, a piece of furniture is much more than something you sit on. Rather than building a chair that might just be temporary, the owner of Cross Cut Vintage Designs would rather build something that lasts for decades, carrying memories along with it as it passes from generation to generation. “It’s handmade, number one, and I strictly make everything out of furniture-grade lumber,” Adams says of his furniture. “It’s just more of a quality piece. It’s made out of quality materials. I like to think I put a little bit of love into each one of my pieces too.” A graduate of Noblesville High School, Adams crafts furniture in a 100-year-old barn in Sheridan, putting plenty of time and care into every single piece he makes, whether it’s a chair, a table, a desk or anything else his clients might want. Born into a family of carpenters, he started working with his hands at a young age. “I got my love for building and making things in high school,” Adams says. “I had a lot of shop class and was always the kind of kid that liked to take things apart and put them back together.” As he grew older, Adams began working jobs that required a knowledge of craftsmanship. Out of the gate, he worked on some of Indianapolis’ most-loved music venues. “I started out my career working for Live Nation Entertainment,” Adams says. “I was responsible for building maintenance at the Murat Theatre. I went through the whole reconstruction there when they did the renovation of that place. I actually helped with maintenance at Deer Creek Music Center, too, when it was still called Deer Creek.” After working a myriad of hands-on jobs, however, Adams eventually decided to pursue furniture design. Having built furniture for about three years now, he prides himself on being a personable craftsman.

WARM UP WITH FIVE STAR

“When I get new customers, I don’t just consider them a customer — I consider them a friend as well,” Adams says. “When I was a contractor, a lot of my customers actually became good friends. So that’s another important part. When I’m building something for somebody, I get to know them, and I would hope that they’d become a good friend in that process too.”

When someone comes to Cross Cut Vintage Designs for the first time, they often just present Adams with a basic idea or image that they have in mind for their custom piece of furniture. “A lot of times, people come to me with just an idea of a look that they want, so I have to pull thoughts out of the customer’s head on exactly what they want,” he says. Sometimes, there is an added significance tied to the piece as well. “Last year, I had a lady that came to me who had saved an old door from her great-grandparents home, and she wanted a church key built out of it,” Adams says. “She came to the shop, brought the door, and we had about an hour conversation about what she was looking for and how she wanted it to look. I just took that idea from there and made what she wanted.” All of the furniture made at Cross Cut Vintage Designs is made to last. Personally, Adams now has some old furniture that was once in his parents’ home.

“I have seven or eight pieces of furniture in my home that were the first pieces of furniture that my parents purchased when they got married,” he says. “My parents believed in buying a quality piece of furniture that was going to last, so it’s cool to have those pieces in my home now.” Ultimately, he wants every piece of furniture that comes from Cross Cut Vintage Designs to be just as unique and reliable. “I hope the same thing happens with my pieces that have happened with my parents’ pieces,” Adams says. “I hope that a mother and father might hand it down to their children someday. It’s all quality, handmade furniture, and I would hope it would last a lifetime, if not longer.” Cross Cut Vintage Designs is located at 11315 300 N. in Sheridan, or you can visit them online at crosscutvintage.com and give them a call at 317-443-7307.

Local Pastor, Daron Earlewine started Pub Theology in 2009.

Local Pastor, Daron Earlewine, has a passion for spreading the word of God, and these days he’s finding more creative ways to share it. God is at church, the office, the mall, the car and now Earlewine is helping people find God in the most unlikely of places — the pub. Pub Theology is a ministry that Earlewine leads on the first Thursday of every month at a local pub. He started Pub Theology part time in 2009, then he left his Pastorship at East 91st Street Christian Church to do the ministry full-time in 2012. Since graduating college from Indiana Wesleyan University, he’d been a Pastor at Trinity Wesleyan, then started his own church, The Crux where he stayed until moving on to East 91st Street Christian Church.

purpose,” was loaded with twists and turns. It all started with music. A man of many talents, Earlewine plays in a band. One might expect his band to play hits from such Christian Rock chart-toppers as Chris Tomlin, Mercy Me or Danny Gokey. But if you show up to the pub where Earlewine’s band is playing, you better come prepared to hear songs from a different religion and discipline.

“I speak about helping people find peace, purpose and passion in this life and the next,” Earlewine says. He decided to add a twist to the event to encourage more people to become involved. “We offered a Q-and-A session where people could text us their questions, and we’d answer them and talk through it on stage. It really got people to open up.”

“We play mainstream classic rock like Petty, Prince and the Foo Fighters,” he says.

These days, around 50 to 100 guests show up for Pub Theology. The program kicks off around 8 p.m. and incorporates an interview with a featured guest and story of the night.

Occasionally, Earlewine’s band was booked as the entertainment for the night at the pub. Thirsty for a way to reach people who are looking to connect with their faith, Earlewine suggested to the manager to have a charity night once a month. The idea was to take a moment between songs or between sets and present a “sermon” which would be designed to reach those who are open to discovering or re-discovering their The providential path to starting Pub faith. The idea caught on, and Pub Theology Theology, deemed as “Indy’s best party with a was a big hit. WestfieldMag.com / APRIL 2018 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 35

“Just like Jesus hung out and listened to people in the everyday places and spaces of life, we’re hoping to stir your soul by sharing this experience of faith in a casual setting. It gives people a chance to talk, hang out and build relationships,” Earlewine says. The band kicks off the party around 9:30. Sometimes a silent auction is held, and guests are asked to make charitable

donations to the cause of the evening. “So far, we’ve raised over $200,000 for local causes and charities. One night, we raised money for an accident victim,” Earlewine says. Dave Smiley of the 99.5 WZPL morning show became friends with the Pub Pastor, and soon, Earlewine began doing Therapy Thursdays on the show. With co-hosts Ryan

“One listener in Cincinnati shared how listening to the podcast helped her get through the difficult time she experienced following cochlear implant surgery. Whether it’s fear, bitterness, or resentment, we want to help you get through that and choose hope and forgiveness,” he says. Earlewine also hosts a workshop called Spiritual DNA. The workshop centers around finding the true purpose and spirit

Ahlwardt and Lisa Graft, he hosted the session for four years. “People commented on Twitter and Facebook about how the show impacted them,” he says. Therapy Thursdays paved the way for Radio Theology starting in October 2016. Like Pub Theology, Earlewine uses his format to help listeners who struggle to find their passion and purpose in life.

God gave each person for this life. “I often believe God created you on purpose for a purpose Earlewine says. “Your unique personality gives you a passion, and God created you to find the path to it.” The first things that come to mind for most people when they hear passion and purpose

are marriage, family, career and friends, but there’s so much more in store. “You find your purpose when you understand that God is love,” he adds. “When you connect with that, you’ll know the love of the creator that made you in the first place. You’ll learn how to love him and others.” Earlewine’s podcasts can be found on iTunes and subscribers to the channel can log on to see the thought of the day and access a portion of the latest show every day. Whether you prefer to be inspired in person or while listening to the radio, Pastor Daron invites you to join in. Pub Theology will be held the first Thursday of every month through May at Broad Ripple Tavern, 745 Broad Ripple Avenue, Indianapolis. Starting in June and going through August, Pub Theology moves to Wolfies on Geist, 11699 Fall Creek Rd., Indianapolis. Radio Theology airs Sunday mornings on 99.5 WZPL 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Go to pubtheology.com or daronearlewine. com to download the podcasts. Get the latest updates on events on Pub Theology Indy Facebook page.

“If God is for you, who can be against?” Earlewine says. It’s working, because his ratings for the show are a phenomenal 50 to 100,000 listeners every show getting their weekly dose of faith, hope, love and music. “Some are in a place where they’re searching and curious about their faith,” he says. “Others are just looking for a way to make their conversation with God informative and fun, not stuffy. Tune in. It could become your favorite radio show that inspires you.” Pub and Radio Theology have both evolved, opening the door to even more formats for Earlewine to share his message. Earlewine started Born to Be, a Podcast show where he interviews a guest about an experience that tested their faith. During the show, Earlewine and the guest discuss how the experience led to finding God’s grace.
