At Home With Fishers’ City Councilwoman

CECILIA COBLE Writer / Kara Reibel . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Fishers’ City Councilwoman Cecilia Coble proudly represents families with children and those living with disabilities. Cecilia and Mike Coble have called the Geist area home for the last 21 years. Mike is originally from Indianapolis, while Cecilia grew up mainly in Phoenix, Arizona. With her mom from Mexico and her dad, a retired FBI agent, Cecilia, her brother and sister were encouraged to discuss politics and solutions. The family made a point of staying connected to current events and social issues. Cecilia met her husband at the University of Arizona. After graduation, the couple married and moved to Indianapolis, both earning their law degrees from Indiana University’s Robert McKinney School of Law. After working in government relations for Bank One, Cecilia took time off to be a mom to their girls: Alexa, a competitive cheerleader and an eighth grader at HSE Jr. High, and Crysta, a fifth grader and also part of a cheer squad at Indiana Elite. When Crysta was 6 months old, Mike and Cecilia started noticing a delay in meeting certain developmental milestones. “We sought early intervention, going through First Steps as well as seeing specialists,” says Cecilia. “We were doing all the right things and it wasn’t helping.” The next few years, the Cobles sought answers for their daughter, Crysta. They worked with genetic counseling, a few developmental pediatricians, and even took Crysta to Mayo Clinic to no avail of a definitive diagnosis. It was not until Crysta was about 5-years-old that a local pediatrician in Indianapolis diagnosed her with autism. Devastated by the news, but also relieved because now they knew what they were dealing with, the Cobles quickly sought solutions to help their youngest daughter. “I am a warrior mom and a solution-driven person. I wanted to have no regrets,” states Cecilia, who continues to investigate all possible avenues to help Crysta. “One in 68 children have autism. It has exploded to epidemic proportions, yet parents must seek their own answers and solutions.” atGeist.com / JANUARY 2015 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 9

Upon exploring schools and learning centers for kids with autism, the Coble family discovered that they were fortunate to have several options for centers for children with autism nearby. Normal activities, such as a playground, were not initially handled with the normalcy one would expect from an active child. When Mike and Cecilia would take the girls to a park to play, Crysta would run in the opposite direction of the playground. This is not uncommon with autistic children. Finding areas that would allow Crysta to explore, without worrying about her running out into a parking lot or other potentially unsafe area, was a challenge. “Parenting a child with autism is a completely different ballgame than that of a normal child. Quickly, we found our hopes and dreams for Crysta changing, our goals for her changed, and we dealt with these changes,” said Cecilia. Within Hamilton County, Fishers has the highest concentration of families living with autism. During one of Cecilia’s late-night online information-seeking sessions, she discovered a group called TACA, Talk

About Curing autism. Founded in Orange County, California, it was formed by a group of parents, all coping with the complexities of autism. “The TACA organization helped us so much, providing us with so much information, I knew I had to share this locally,” states Cecilia. She reached out to TACA and became one of four coordinators for the Indiana chapter. TACA provides much-needed information and resources to families dealing with the challenges of autism. TACA chapters continue to grow all across the country. Made up of autism families helping autism families, their goal is to quickly aide families on to the right path for help. The services offered are desperately needed, for once a family receives a diagnosis, they are left to cope with autism mostly on their own. Having a child with autism can be physically and emotionally exhausting. The sleepless nights, fussy eating, and medical issues push parents to their limits. Fishers resident and TACA mom living with autism, Raina Schnaiter, said, “Autism has pushed me beyond my limits. It is through autism that I have learned I am limitless.”

TACA helps address important issues like sleep. Children with autism have diverging sleep patterns, and for many parents, it can be like having a newborn, only the phase can last indefinitely. Diet is another facet of autism. Studies have shown that autistic children perform better on gluten-free, casein-free diets. Many have other allergies or additional concerns, so diet changes are a high priority. The sleep suggestions and dietary suggestions help immensely, such as they did with Crysta. Crysta keeps plugging away, working on her milestones. She talks, which is a huge step in communication. She is now more engaging with others and although she has many more goals ahead of her, Crysta is working hard to achieve her fullest potential. “Every year we see the improvements she has made and we celebrate the small things, for with kids like Crysta, these are big things,” says Cecilia. Cecilia is passionate about helping others. This is clearly illustrated in her fundraising efforts to help families get connected to the resources that will best serve their child. Cecilia has taken charge of the fundraising wing of TACA. TACA and Answers for

autism collaborated for the second year in a row, putting on an Evening for Autism. This black-tie fundraiser was held in November, wrapping up a very busy week for Cecilia. She won her first public election, running for a Fishers City Council at-large seat, and culminated on Friday night with the Evening for Autism event.

enriched our lives,” shares Cecilia. "We are very blessed with what we have been given.” Mike echoes Cecilia’s sentiment, “We are a close family, and with us all working together to help Crysta has only brought us closer.”

TACA meetings are from 7-9 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at Launch Fishers. For additional information and to find out how you can help Talk About Curing Autism, visit TACAnow.org.

“It was quite the whirlwind week,” says Cecilia. It was also an exciting time for her husband, Mike. “It was exciting to go through the political campaign and election,” said Mike. “Everything Cecilia takes on, she gives 110 percent. When she first decided to run, I knew instinctively she would win. She will make an excellent councilwoman. We are so proud of her.” Cecilia is committed to using her position in part to help give voice to families with special needs. “During campaign, I met so many people who have a family member with a disability or a special needs child. They expressed their excitement that there was someone representing them on the City Council,” said Cecilia. “Fishers is a wonderful place to live, we have a bright future.” Her childhood and her legal background, plus her experience as a parent has prepared Cecilia for her new role as councilwoman. Expires 2/28/2015

“Growing up, we would have family dinners when we would talk politics, try to come up with solutions to the world’s issues,” recalls Cecilia. Her parents and siblings grew up staying engaged in their community. Cecilia has carried that forward, for in addition to TACA, she is on the Christamore House Guild, and also helps her a dear friend who is battling Huntington’s Disease. “Having a child with autism has only atGeist.com / JANUARY 2015 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 11

Here is what some of the Trobotics team members are saying about their experience: “The thing I find rewarding is that it gets my brain working and allows me to meet other people. Also it helps with engineering and communication skills.” (John Pruitt, junior) “Being on Trobotics is so cool! You’re basically given a bunch of parts and told ‘Build an effective robot.’ From there you can do anything – the possibilities are endless.” (Rachel Cavender, freshman) “It’s fun and it takes thought at the same time. The fact that you can build anything that you want and it works makes it different from anything else.” (Clem Horlander, freshman) “Building the robot would not have been possible without the power of teamwork.” (John Callahan, junior) “Robotics is really great. Just like when I was kid and I built Legos, I have no limit to what I want to do except my imagination.” (Patrick Haimbaugh, freshman) “I learn something new every day. We’re like a family. Practice is something I look forward to after school because it’s just a blast being here.” (Thomas Horlander, senior) “At first, I felt so out of my element. Now I’m not just building robots… it’s much more than that. I’m building character.” (Donna Riner, junior) “This is fun because it’s actual experience that you can take to a job in the real world.” (Jacob Pletcher, senior)

BISHOP CHATARD HIGH SCHOOL WINS VEX ROBOTICS CITY CHAMPIONSHIP Writer / Janet C. Striebel

The Bishop Chatard Robotics Team recently won the Third Annual City of Indianapolis VEX Robotics Championship held at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Trobotics Team (blending of “Trojans” Chartard’s mascot and “robotics”) was awarded their large trophy on Nov. 16, 2014, after competing among 49 other high school teams. “We’ve been working on the robot since September 3 for about three hours a week,” says senior Joe Bormann. “The really rewarding part about being on this team is the success we’ve had so far. Last year did not go well and it feels really great to have

created a robot that is working properly.” This city tournament allows only one robot per school. By the time schools compete at the state level, schools will be allowed to bring multiple robots representing each team. “Mayor Ballard has really pushed to get schools involved in this city tournament,” says Amanda Horan, coach and chemistry/ physics teacher at Bishop Chatard High School. “This represents an important educational initiative as the size of the city tournament has grown bigger each year.” In fact, more than 130 school teams participated in this city tournament made up of not only high school but also middle-

The Trobotics team is scheduled for three upcoming competitions and hopefully will go to state. Follow this team on Twitter @Trobotics. Horan brags on the students when she says, “We’ve been blessed with these kids. They are so dedicated. They ask us [coaches] to have practices for them on Saturdays and school breaks so they can work more on their projects.”

school and elementary levels. “At the high school level, the robots are made of metal unlike the plastic used in younger grades,” says Gary Pritts, coach and chemistry/physics teacher at Bishop Chatard High School. “The high school kids create bigger and more complicated robots using power tools and customizing parts. Each year the competition has gotten more difficult with taller competition objectives.”

other teams because I knew that our robot was going to be in the top eight (based on qualification rankings),” said senior Hawkins. “We talked about doing this last year but we never really had a chance to be in the top eight. I recruited some other people to help write notes and take pictures.

The Trobotics Team made up 27 teammates including eight girls, all whom have different interests outside of robotics ranging from athletics and music to theatre. Though they may bring varying talents to the table, one thing is for sure, they all share a special camaraderie and team spirit. This bond, more powerful than any robot, attributes to their success.

Everyone said that it really helped and we plan on expanding our notes at upcoming competitions.” Pritts adds, “These kids from all these schools have nothing in common other than these robots. It’s neat to watch how they work together and strategize to form an alliance.”

The competition involves eight rounds of qualifications with two alliances made up of two teams each that are randomly selected. Bishop Chatard formed an alliance with Providence Cristo Rey High School and Irvington Preparatory Academy Charter School. This triplethreat-team-alliance proved to be the 2014 Vex city champions.

“Each year the VEX tournament presents a new game,” says Horan. “This year, teams had to collect points by stacking yellow ‘Skyrise’ pieces and picking up cubes with their robots and placing them on gray poles or the yellow ‘Skyrise’ pieces. Part of our success was choosing the right teams in our alliance. Matthew Hawkins was instrumental in researching the contenders that would serve as potential allies.”

FISHERS OPENS NEW PARK IN GEIST Writer / Pat Carlini

Fishers is set to open a new, one-of-a-kind destination park in the Geist area this spring. It’s called Flat Fork Creek Park, located on what used to be 80 acres of farmland at 101st and Cyntheanne Road, just east of Geist Reservoir.

This new, year-round adventure park features a 60-foot sledding hill, a zip line, a two-mile progressive mountain bike course, walking trails, fishing ponds and an elevated boardwalk that winds through tree houses — yes, tree houses! “We are very excited about this park,” says Fishers Parks and Recreation Director Tony Elliott. “I think it will be a great addition to

this community and a draw from all around including Lawrence, Pendleton, Carmel and Indianapolis.” The sledding hill is open now for the snow season as part of the first, 60-acre phase of the park. Another 20 acres will be green space used for reforestation efforts and will complete the park. A grand opening of the park is planned for spring. Elliott says one special feature of the park is that the sledding hill and boardwalk are wheelchair accessible, so much so that somebody in a wheelchair can see as much of the park as a child in a stroller. “Also the trails are a little different,” says Elliott. “Where most parks want you to stay on the trails so as not to damage nature, this park wants you to get off the trail and explore!” The park was a promise to Geist when it was annexed by Fishers and the town budgeted $3.5 million for the project. Elliott says officials saved some taxpayer money by inviting local developers to dump fill dirt at the park to build the sledding hill. “About 100,000 cubic feet of dirt was dumped on the site,” said Elliot. “It saved us buying dirt.” And what happens if we don’t get snow? “Good question! We looked into the cost of making snow like a ski resort,” says Elliot. “But not sure yet. We are also looking at additional lighting since it gets dark so early here in the winter.”

ndianapolis metro communities are flled with history and historic buildings. In downtown Franklin, there is a building dating back to 1915 when it was an auto dealership. Afer time it fell into complete disrepair, but afer much work, the building received a national award for its restoration. In 2012, resident Cori Brown wanted to start a business and saw the old building, close to the courthouse, as an ideal location and an opportunity to breathe new life into the Johnson County seat. It took Cori and her husband Scot – owner of the Brown Remodeling Company – a year to bring the building back to life. Teir work received national recognition in November when Window & Door magazine, the authority on the most innovative and trending window and door products on the market, named Franklin Window & Door “2014 Dealer of the Year: Excellence in Showroom Design.” As a highlight of the downtown revitalization efort, Franklin Window and Door is a warm, welcoming and elegant space. “Restoring the building was no simple task,” Cori says. Reconstruction included raising the southwest corner of the building four inches. Te original pressed metal ceiling was uncovered and restored. Te interior restoration includes wooden beams from a local 1800s era barn and the entire front façade was rebricked. Window & Door quotes Krista Linke, the director of community development for the city of Franklin as saying, “What [Cori Brown] did with that building was just amazing. It was one of our worst buildings downtown. Tey basically rebuilt it and made it historically appropriate. It’s a great example of the kind of work we want to see take place.”

EDDY’S CELEBRATES Writer / Pat Carlini

Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Along with the anniversary celebration, the ownership of Eddy’s is changing hands. But no need for concern, the new owner is certainly no stranger to Eddy’s. Dave Stringer, known as the tall guy behind the bar, has been the manager of operations after Scott Foster purchased Eddy’s a little over eight

YEARS!

years ago. Now he will take over as owner, as Foster and his wife plan to spend a little more time at their place in Florida. “It’s fantastic,” says Stringer about his new position. “We’ve been talking about doing this for a while now and finally we just decided now is the time.” Often referred to as the “Cheers” bar of Geist, Stringer says things will remain pretty much the same as they have been, under his direction.

atGeist.com / JANUARY 2015 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 21

Chef Kyle Cambridge will continue whipping up some of Eddy’s favorites in the kitchen such as the jalapeno chicken strips and the popular Eddy’s dip. A few more pasta dishes will be added for the winter menu as they have done in the past. Probably the biggest change is adding craft beers. “The craft beers are so popular now,” says Stringer. “More than half of the beers on tap are craft beers, and I’m adding more canned craft beers too.” The annual food drive spearheaded by Stringer for a downtown food pantry will continue, as well as the summer boatside delivery with the “crazy cart.” Also topping the list, the annual support of the Fourth of July Geist fireworks display will continue. “It’s my entire advertising budget for the year,” laughs Stringer. “But that’s the way it’s been. Eddy’s doesn’t do coupons or anything, we just let everyone know we are still here once a year by supporting the fireworks.” And that strategy may work for them since as of now, 80 percent of their clientele lives within 5 miles of the neighborhood bar and grill. Eddy’s is located at 11693 Fall Creek Road. Pat Carlini is an experienced television/radio personality associated with NBC in Indianapolis and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. She can be contacted at patcarlini.com.

LOCAL RESIDENTS SHARE Memories “Six and a half years ago, the unthinkable happened. My nephew Scott, my brother’s only son, passed away in his sleep from a heart anomaly, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, that we never knew Scott had. My Scott had worked at Eddy’s for six years tending bar while finishing undergrad at IU and a dual master’s degree at IU. On the day of Scott’s funeral, Scott Foster and Dave Stringer showed up at my house with food for 200 plus. They knew that after the funeral, my family, friends and all Scott’s friends would be coming to our house. Scott and Dave never asked for a thing and they never expected anything from us. They gave to my family – who was in so much pain it was hard to breathe – when we didn’t know what to do for ourselves. Scott and Dave fed our families, our friends and Scott’s friends. The late, great Maya Angelou put it succinctly: ‘People will forget what you said, they will forget what you did. But they will NEVER forget how you made them feel.’ That was Scott and Dave. My family will NEVER forget the love from them when we were hurting the most. We love them all.”

- Patty Torr “Eddy’s has served as a wonderful gathering place through the years. When our kids were younger, it served as a great place to go have a family dinner out.”

- State Senator Jim Merritt “IndySurviveOars hang out most Monday and Wednesday nights after practice during the season. Always taken well care of. We celebrate when it’s buffalo chicken soup night!”

- Leigh Ann Peercy “I want to wish Eddy’s a happy 20th anniversary – truly a Geist landmark. As I recall during the annexation days, we would meet mostly at IYC; however, our second summer headquarters was right there on the patio of Eddy’s! Thank you Dave and Scott for serving the Geist residents for all these years. Here’s to the next 20!”

- Pete Peterson “Since the day they bought Eddy’s, they’ve set about improving it and immersing themselves in the Geist community! Scott has always been quick to say yes, and do it humbly, as I’ve gone to his well many times, for many causes! Whether it’s supporting Geist Lake Coalition’s Fourth of July Fireworks (long before the event it has become) to being the Title Sponsor for Blast on the Bridge, since its inception I might add! He’s always been a team player, giving in to other’s best interest rather than his own. Saying “yes” to St. Mary’s Child Center’s raffle tickets, donating generously to auctions, events and fundraisers, to putting up with the Geist Lake Coalition using Eddy’s patio as ground zero for many Geist Clean Up Days, on busy Saturdays to boot. Heather is a natural giver too, and jumped in feet first giving back as well, from wine tastings to golf outings benefiting her favorite charity. Bottom line they’ve run a fabulous neighborhood bar and grill, but unlike most, it’s been their vehicle to bring neighbors, friends and families together. I truly believe they’ve leveraged Eddy’s to benefit the community more than themselves, and far more than most! Yes, they’ve left a legacy behind and they’ll be missed, but they’ve found a way to continue being givers to Geist, through Dave Stringer, keeping another promise made long ago… Dave get’s it too, Eddy’s and the Foster’s legacy continues!”

- Geist Lake Coalition President Brian Hall 22 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JANUARY 2015 / atGeist.com

NEW YEAR, NEW FITNESS TECHNOLOGY MYRIAD OF FITNESS BANDS

Writer / Alicia Wettrick

The last time I donned wearable technology was a Casio calculator watch in 1982. Now with the new technology, I can go from converting metrics to collecting my own personal biometrics.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY THAT EXCITES PEOPLE?

The answer is data. We love collecting personal data that can be analyzed and graphed, revealing details of our daily lives. So naturally, devices that collect personal biometric data would be popular among the fitness and tech crowds. Fitness bands can do an array of metric measuring such as heart rates, step count, calories burned and some even track sleep patterns. Most bands alert you when you meet your daily goal or remind you to get moving. All this data can be synched to a smart phone, tablets or PC, and if desired, you can share your metrics with others to add a “gaming” element to your fitness.

There are bundles of fitness bands on the market, but how do you know which one is right for you? It all depends upon features and price, which range from $50 up to $400. Below is a review of some of the most popular and reasonably priced bands on the market. In talking to several local residents that wore a variety of these bands, most agree that the technology is only as good as your motives. If you don’t check your data, the band is only an accessory. However, most found that these bands were a “wake-up” call in acknowledging your fitness goals, and inspired them to at least walk or run more. Yes, some had some frustration with the technology at first, but moved from fashion accessory to the ultimate goal: getting fit. So, this holiday season that starts with an extra serving of stuffing, and ends with a “resolution,” give fitness bands a second look to keep you dedicated to your overall health and fitness. Happy (Healthy) Holidays!

JAWBONE UP ($49.99)

This is the most slim and inconspicuous band on the market. No LED lights or display screen so you would have to check your progress on a phone. Known to be easy to operate and it allows you to scan food barcodes through the app. The new Jawbone UP24 ($129.99) has Bluetooth capabilities, although there has been many complaints with the rechargeable battery malfunctioning. • Tracks steps, exercise, calories burned; sleep patterns • Tracks diet, calories and nutrients with UP App Food Score; monitors healthy eating. • Vibrating alarm to get moving or to wake-up. • Rechargeable battery up to 10 days; water-resistant • No wireless syncing; must be plugged into phone

30 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JANUARY 2015 / atGeist.com

FITBIT FLEX ($99.99)

Known to be very comfortable and sleek in style, the Flex has a LED light only to inform of progress, no display screen, data is checked through a wireless connected app. Highly rated for being motivational and providing great data to help achieve daily goals.

GARMIN VIVOSMART ($199.99)

This band “learns” your activity habits and tailors a personalized goal each morning. It has a nice display screen to check progress and tell the time. Therefore, you do not have to synch-it to see basic data. Vivosmart alerts you by vibration when you have calls, texts, emails, meetings, or if you need to walk more. This device connects wirelessly to Garmin Connect, although some complained of experiencing issues with syncing the device to a computer and phone. The less expensive Garmin Vivofit ($99.99) has the same features except the call/text notifications. • Tracks steps, calories burned, distance; monitors sleep (Have to switch to sleep mode) • Monitors calls, texts, meetings and emails with vibration or screen display. • Long battery life, more than a year; water-resistant • Wireless sync; pairs with heart rate monitor

MISFIT SHINE ($119.99)

The Shine has the most unique and versatile design with its removable rounded face that can be worn as a wristband, pin, belt clip or necklace. You can wear it while swimming. A halo of LED lights informs of activity progress, but has no display screen. • Tracks steps, exercise, swimming, distance, calories burned; sleep patterns • No charging required, replaceable battery lasts up to six months • Wireless sync • Waterproof; can be worn while swimming (up to 50 meters)

• Tracks steps, distance, calories burned and active minutes; sleep patterns • Vibration wake-up alarm • LED lights show how your day is stacking up against your goal • Rechargeable battery up to for five days; water-resistant • Wireless sync

MENTORING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IS HERE

Writer / Laurie Quinn

January is National Mentoring Month and in Fishers, this is a great month to pay homage to our own youth mentoring program called the Youth Mentoring Initiative, or YMI. YMI has over 7,300 hours of mentoring in schools since the Fall of 2008. By 2020, YMI wants to provide mentoring to 600 HSE students in grades five – 12. In honor of National Mentoring Month, let’s meet YMI’s longest running mentor – Shellie Law. Law has been a mentor for more than six years. Deciding on becoming a mentor was an easy choice for her. She had been searching for an avenue to reach out and make a difference in her community. Law recalls thinking YMI seemed like a great opportunity to reach youth in a structured setting. On the flip side, Law says she feels rewarded. “It gives me a chance to be around young adults who need me," she said. "It makes me feel connected like I can make a difference in today’s world!” She has actually made lifelong friendships because of being a mentor. volleyball courts, which are lighted for evening play. Pinheads also offers volleyball leagues in the summer. If you will be watching friends play, there is a place for you at the observation deck that is home to Toucan’s Tiki Hut. The bar features two large TVs for people to enjoy between games. Walter is especially excited about the new restaurant formerly known as Louie’s. This new space will have a stone wrap on the exterior façade and will serve the highest quality of food. Its new rebranded name will be announced in the spring. He says, “If you haven’t been to Pinheads for a while then you should come back in and check it out.”

I

f you’ve ever been to Pinheads Recreational Center in the past, then you probably recall how this bowling paradise catered mainly to kids, but not anymore. This new establishment focuses on “family” and “Mom and Dad” with its new agenda such as swapping the kids play area for a multipurpose banquet facility and introducing a “casual-upscale” wine and dine restaurant. Instead of primary colors, visitors will admire the cozy and rustic charm of the new décor. Although families may visit Pinheads to bowl a game or two, with all the changes of the current remodel, Mom and Dad may opt to get a babysitter to escape. They can now enjoy a relaxing dinner together or a splendid food tasting event paired with wine at Pinheads. Not a big wine drinker? Pinheads also supports local Indiana breweries with their craft beer selection.

“We pride ourselves in giving topnotch service to all of our customers,” says Kevin Walter, the chief operating officer of Pinheads. “When compared to similar facilities in greater Indianapolis, we’re No. 1 in customer service reviews. Out of over 700 Groupon reviews, we average 97 percent in customer satisfaction.” Pinheads doesn’t stop their service at games. They offer food made from scratch with two certified chefs onsite to oversee the kitchen. And don’t expect the typical nachos from a concession stand. Pinheads offers upscale pub food including fresh appetizers, hand-patted burgers and hand-stretched dough for pizza.

Pinheads provides open bowling on Fridays and Saturdays, featuring a DJ host and prize giveaways from 7 – 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday they offer league bowling after 5:30 p.m. For the budget-minded, you can bowl for only $1.00 per game after 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, excluding holiday breaks. Pinheads will host a Wine & Canvas event on Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, complete with a chefprepared dinner for two. Register through wineandcanvas.com to reserve a spot. HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE TOWNEPOST NETWORK Writer / Tom Britt

It’s hard to believe that just over 11 years ago, my daughter, Tory and I were stufng mailboxes in our neighborhood announcing the launch of atGeist.com. About eight months later, we mailed our frst Geist Community Newsleter to just over 2,500 homes. Today, our TownePost Network has expanded to nine hyper-local monthly newsleters and just over 130,000 homes in Central Indiana. Much of that growth has happened in the past three years and we’re poised to grow even more in 2015 as we start to franchise our concept.

Girls About ToWn Follow us to see where we’re @ - Rachel Q. & Chalene B. -

WHAT’S MORE FUN THAN A PARTY? Now that the flurry of the holidays has passed us, many of us just want to sit on the couch and break open the first disc of that DVD set we got for Christmas and hibernate for winter. And while our minds may be looking ahead to spring and warmer weather, one of the best ways to keep the winter blues away is to be with our friends and family! Don’t let the bleak winter temperatures outside give you the blues! January is the perfect time to throw a party! Your Girls About Town ventured out and hit the B1G Championship game in downtown Indy

and that got us thinking…bowl games and playoff games are the perfect excuse to not let your social calendar burn out during the darkest days of winter! So round up your friends and invite them out of their houses for some fun. Together, you’ll beat those winter blues! Short winter days mean long winter nights, and in January, football is in the air. Lift everyone’s spirits and help the cold days pass quickly by hosting a party or plan a gathering at a local team-friendly bar. Thankfully, it doesn’t take much planning and even if you’re not a huge football fan,

While most of the bowl games are played on Jan. 1, be sure not to miss the party opportunity for the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship. This is the national championship game of the 2014 college football season, and takes place on Jan. 12. As the first-ever College Football Championship Game, (replacing the BCS National Championship Game), it will be the culmination of the 2014-15 bowl games. Whether you’re an Oregon Duck, an Ohio State Buckeye, a Florida State Seminole or an Alabama Crimson Tide, these national powerhouses are sure to set the stage for a winning party that’ll have you forgetting about the bleak outside temperatures! Not a fan of college football? The NFL playoff games kick off with the wild card games, followed by the divisional round, then the conference championships. That’s three full weekends of football madness to keep our minds off our winter woes! And if football just isn’t your thing, there’s always the party food! Start your party off right with festive dips, spreads, finger foods and appetizers. Crowd-pleasing appetizers like chicken wings, Chex mix and guacamole are all perfect for nibbling while watching the game. Try this beer cheese dip recipe for a guaranteed party favorite. Winter celebrations will give everyone something to look forward to as we all cheer for the arrival of spring. There’s nothing like spending time with the people you love to keep your mind off the winter blues!

BEER CHEESE DIP

• 1/4 to 1/2 can of beer • 2 jars of Kraft Old English Spread • 2 8oz. Pkgs. of Cream Cheese • Garlic Powder Mix all together with a hand mixer. Add garlic to taste. Serve with fresh rye or white bread or any kind of cracker or breadstick. Or make a bread bowl by taking out the center and break it up into small pieces, then put the dip in the middle.

BABY BOOTCAMP MOMS STROLL INTO FITNESS

Baby Boot Camp Moms using resistance bands while their babies wait it out.

Writer & Photographer / Lynda Hedberg Thies

For many new moms learning to multitask on less sleep with their highly anticipated bundle of joy means that normal exercise routines drift into the “once upon a time” story they wish had a different ending. Then add the hectic pace of the holidays with a new baby and the goal of getting into shape starts to look like a fairy tale. But thanks to one local Fishers mom, the idea for moms to workout with their baby can make 2015 the year to reclaim their pre-pregnancy shape, improve their energy and sense of well being. Shortly after returning to the Indianapolis area, Kara Babcock was expecting her first child and was searching online for a prenatal yoga class in the area. That was when she stumbled onto the Baby Boot Camp website. Babcock, a former sales and marketing executive, never considered that she would have anything to do with the program. But she loved the concept and “wished someone would open the program in Owner Kara Indianapolis.” Nothing would happen Babcock until after the birth of her son. It wasn’t until she drove to Sarasota, Florida, to visit with her parents, months after the birth of her son, that she met with Baby Boot Camp CEO Kristen Horler. Babcock went on to say, “Once I met with her and learned more about Baby Boot Camp and all about prenatal/postnatal fitness, StrollerFriends playdates and building a community with the moms, that I fell in love with the program." It was then that Babcock decided, “I should be the one to

bring it to Indianapolis.” She officially purchased the Indianapolis franchise in April of 2014 and began offering classes Sept. 29, 2014. The class is comprised of moms from the Indianapolis area, but the majority of moms have moved from Seattle, Chicago and St. Louis and are looking for a way to stay active while meeting other moms. While the name, Baby Boot Camp invokes images of superhuman infants doing push-ups or a set of seated squats, the fitness program is for moms to exercise with, over and around their infants. Babcock said the program offers a great opportunity for moms to exercise, socialize and their babies benefit in many ways. Currently, classes are offered at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Fishers and the Fashion Mall at Keystone Crossing and have primarily been targeted to the stay-at-home mom. Starting this month, Babcock is expanding to offer a Saturday class to reach more working moms. As for the future of the franchise, she plans to continue offering new classes and locations for both working and stay-at-home moms. She is hiring enough teachers to allow for the growth. Eventually, Babcock says, “I’d also like to grow big enough to have classes for moms and babies all over Indy!” For more information on class times, locations or for more information, please go to babybootcamp.com/in-carmel. EVERY DAY CHANGES TO A HEALTHIER 2015 Writer / Breanna Moore RDN, CD

To be resolute… Resolutions can be dirty words in wellness. The connotation that comes with it is that they are short lived – that we make plans of grandeur and then fall short of our lofty goals and expectations. Make this year different. This year, make a plan simply to be resolute – to be determined. Do not expect to change the world, your body, or your health overnight. Find every day victories that lead to long term success and don’t give up. 1. RAINBOWS I bet you won’t forget that. Make sure to eat something colorful at each meal. I’m not talking about fruit loops or green ketchup (cringe). Yellow, green, red, orange, blue – each color correlates with different nutrient profiles. Make half your plate fresh fruits and vegetables. 2. STEP UP Take the stairs at least once a day. It doesn’t matter if it is six steps or six flights – every step counts. Don’t waste your time driving around stalking the perfect spot while shopping, go ahead and park out in the left field. Those extra distances can really add up! 3. HAVE FUN Yep. I said it. Have fun! If your regimen is not enjoyable and you are miserable every day, it will not be long lived. Make your health something you look forward to. Get a fitness tracker and challenge friends and family. Join a wellness club. Set your own

Pat t y Torr

GRI, RealtoR

goals and check them off one by one. Find something that works for you and stick with it! 4. DRINK UP It is easy to get dehydrated, no matter the season. Save yourself a couple bucks and trade the soda for a glass of water. The Institute of Medicine recommends ~ 9 cups of water daily for healthy adult females and ~13 cups of water daily for healthy adult males. 5. CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES Not every day can be a celebration, but give yourself a break when you hit a goal or a milestone. Take a deep breath, enjoy your moment and look at how far you’ve come! 6. LOOK TO THE RIGHT RESOURCES if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. There are no magic pills, no magic shakes. Eat right and exercise. Speak with your physician or a registered dietitian to develop a safe and effective wellness plan tailored to you! Be positive when you set your resolutions and have a happy and healthy 2015!

Susan Van Hoosen is a woman with a glow about her. A self-proclaimed hugger, she has a vibrancy and warmth that radiate from her and you can’t help but absorb some of it. It is hard to believe that her husband, Trent, passed away only two years ago, taking her down to her knees and forcing her to cope with the extreme grief.

atGeist.com / JANUARY 2015 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 47

KETTLE BELLS They had the relationship that many admired and wished for themselves. They both enjoyed exercising and clean eating as part of living a healthy lifestyle. Then the unimaginable happened when Trent suddenly died from a blood clot to his lung (Deep Vein Thrombosis, a hereditary disease), leaving Susan in shock. About a month after his death, she put her daughter on the bus and dragged herself to the basement to work out for the first time, since his passing. That was the first day that she didn’t cry since Trent’s passing. She tried going back to her corporate job of almost 12 years, but that lasted only two weeks. Susan realized she was being called to serve others through health and fitness. The idea began as her grief therapy and evolved into her new career. Inspired By Fitness was born. As soon as she became a Certified Personal Trainer, Susan already had her first two clients. After just two months, she had six clients. Within a year and a half, she also earned her CrossFit and TRX

Certifications and became an ACE Certified Health Coach. The client base continues to snowball just through word of mouth. “God sends me every person that comes here,” smiles Van Hoosen. Divine intervention sure seems to play a part in this business. Susan wanted her logo to be an elephant, not an animal famous for its muscular physique. She wanted it because of the mantra that Trent lived by when things got tough, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” So, the day after telling a friend she was going to research images of elephants, she coincidentally received a picture of one in the mail from a friend at the Indianapolis Zoo. The elephant’s name was Sophie, Susan’s and Trent’s daughter’s name, and it was 46 years old – Trent’s age when he died. She was standing in front of a waterfall with her trunk in the air, which signifies happiness. Susan put the elephant’s likeness on a Bosu ball with a kettle bell in her trunk and a logo was born. Part of each client session is a lesson on nutrition, which, for most

TRX SUSPENSION people, is the hardest component of wellness. Susan helps her clients with food journals, menu planning and preparation tips. “It‘s more than just physical fitness,” she said. “I coach my clients on how to create a clean lifestyle they can sustain for a lifetime by practicing daily healthy habits and easing into lifestyle changes." Most of the clients are women and baby boomers. “It’s safe here,” smiles Susan. “They don’t have to worry about being watched, intimidated or what they look like.” Inspired By Fitness’s format includes working with clients one-onone, in pairs, small groups and corporate wellness programs. The stimulating, clean and comfortable garage and basement studios are full-time training spaces stocked with all the equipment you would ever need to get a great, fun workout including: TRX suspension training, rowers, kettle bells, battle ropes and Pilates rings, Dynamax Balls, Bosu Balls, etc. Each client session is customized and always varied focusing on functional movements and bodyweight resistance, targeting multiple muscle groups in each movement.

“I teach my clients that you don’t need an hour to get an effective, workout.” says Susan. “You can accomplish a lot in a half hour or 45 minutes once you learn how to use your body effectively.” Other than wanting to add more companies to help with their Wellness Programs, Susan’s goal is to continue to serve people to live the healthiest lives, and to love their bodies through clean eating and consistent movement. She has daily exercises and nutrition tips on her website, inspiredbyfitness.net, along with information about training, pricing and how to contact her. You can also read testimonials that might speak to your health and fitness needs.

Those words serve as both motivation and mantra for the internationally-ranked Naptown Roller Girls as they begin their ninth home season next month. The bar will already be set high as the flat track roller derby league returns to the newly-renovated Indiana Farmers Coliseum. The magic of the building can be felt throughout Central Indiana. It is a legendary space that housed hockey icon Wayne Gretsky in his early days and introduced thousands of Midwestern teens to a band called the Beatles back in the 1960s.

Proven expertise for uncertain markets.

Because of the Coliseum’s facelift, the league moved to smaller venues on the State Fairground campus and the Indiana Convention Center. The organization is hoping a return to the Coliseum will mean a return for fans as well. “I think people in general appreciate consistency and convenience. Because of all of the moving around the last two years, we lost a big chunk of our fan base,” says Naptown Tornado Siren veteran skater Melissa “Maiden America” Smith. “We think our fans will really enjoy seeing roller derby at the new Coliseum. The facility is absolutely beautiful and it looks like it was built for roller derby.” The Lebanon native and Purdue graduate says the league is taking extra steps to entice new fans. “We will have new uniforms and are playing highly competitive, closely matched teams,” Smith says.

respective divisional playoff tournaments. The two leagues also have a history dating back to Naptown’s earliest moments, with Nashville being their first-ever opponent in 2007. Smith is expanding her role with the team this year as head of the Training Committee. She has a big job – overseeing training for the Sirens, Belles and the C-team Third Alarm, as well as skating. Smith served as captain for the Tornado Sirens two seasons in a row and was part of the roster that made back to back World Championship appearances in 2011 and 2012. “Our goal this year is to be better each and every time we hit the track,” Smith says. “We are going to test our limits like never before. As long as we continue to work harder than ever, we will have some amazing outcomes this year.” To learn more about roller derby, check out the Naptown Roller Girls’ homepage, naptownrollergirls.com.
