UPGRADED PAPER

People love the feel of paper when they are reading a magazine, so we upgraded the paper to a more contemporary matte finish. It should not only feel better, but you can read it easier with less glare on the finish.

NEW MASTHEAD

Probably the first thing you noticed is the “GEIST” on the cover is different. Our old masthead tended to overpower the cover photos; the new one is a bit more elegant.

Notice something different about this month’s Geist Community Newsletter? Perhaps the new “GEIST” logo on the cover, more white space and bigger photos struck your fancy. Well, if you noticed any or all of these changes, you deserve a little background as to why we overhauled the Geist area’s most-read monthly publication.

As many of you know, we launched the Geist Community Newsletter 10 years ago as a photocopied black-and-white newsletter that was mailed to just over 2,600 Geist residents. Since that time, we’ve expanded the distribution, enhanced the quality and reinvested our time and money back into making the publication the voice of all that’s right with our community. Today we have six monthly publications (Geist, Fishers, Carmel, Zionsville, Lawrence and Center Grove) around

Indianapolis with another three (Broad Ripple, Noblesville and Morse Reservoir) launching next month. This growing family of publications is now defined as the “TownePost Media Network,” which is now on the cover. Why are we expanding so quickly while traditional media outlets are shrinking? Because people want more local good news. To that end, we wanted to update the newsletters to reflect the upscale nature of our readers and neighborhoods that we serve each month. While most of the changes are subtle, others are a little more pronounced. Here’s a cheat sheet of the upgrades we introduced with this month’s issue:

8 / GEIST / FEBRUARY 2014 / atGeist.com

Each page now has more white space around the copy and photos, again giving the pages a more elegant and refined look. This also helps readability and looks less cluttered.

BIGGER PHOTOS

A story is only as good as the pictures. Our new design allows for more, larger photos to complement the stories. We all hope you enjoy the “new and improved” Geist Community Newsletter. Remember to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as online at atGeist.com. Our commitment to providing local news doesn’t stop with this publication, so look us up online throughout the month.

Tom Britt is the publisher and founder of atGeist.com and the Geist Community Newsletter which is celebrating its 10th year of publication. For story ideas, email Tom@atGeist.com.

Mary Phillips with Gigi’s Cupcakes and Sheri Miller with Planet Adventure have teamed up to host a 5K race the weekend before Valentine’s Day, Feb. 8.

TREAT YOURSELF TO THE ‘RUN 4 LOVE’ Writer / Chrissy Kenney

Winter can be a gloomy time, even for those who are head over heels in love with their significant others. Throw in Valentine’s Day, arguably the most hated holiday by singles across the nation, and mid-February can feel downright icy with frustration. Planet Adventure, an organization out of Fishers that hosts a variety of road races, is determined to make Feb. 8, the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, a day all Hoosiers can enjoy, whether they are single, coupled or in between. The Run 4 Love 5K is scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m., starting in Billericay Park, 12690 Promise Rd. in Fishers. This 5K event, in its first year, is designed to get locals active despite the cold weather. “We’re just trying to get people out and help meet their New Year’s resolutions,” said Sherri Miller of Planet Adventure. And, you never know — participants could also meet the love of their life. When participants register online at Run4Love5K.com, they select a specific

category in which they fall. The list includes the following categories:

16 AND UNDER

Puppy Love (I’m Dating, Watch Out) Too Young to Care (Male) Too Young to Care (Female)

17 AND OVER

Love ‘em or Leave ’em (… It’s Complicated) Hands Off! (I’m With Him/Her) Single and Looking (Male) Single and Looking (Female) But according to Miller, this event isn’t totally about meeting potential romantic partners or celebrating your significant other. Every participant should feel sweet on something — a cupcake, that is! Gigi’s Cupcakes has generously agreed to donate treats for the event. At the 1.5 mile marker, runners can stop for a water break and enjoy a mini cupcake. But the real award comes atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2014 / GEIST / 9

when runners cross the finish line. Not only will they earn a medal, but they will also receive a famously large gourmet cupcakes from Gigi’s. “We wanted to correlate the sweetness of love with the sweetness of having something sweet to eat,” Miller said. If a cupcake isn’t enough to convince you to participate, here’s something else to feel good about: The Run 4 Love 5K shares part of its proceeds with the Hamilton County Humane Society. Donations will go toward food and blankets for the animals, Miller said. Those who are interested can register at Run4Love5K.com. You don’t have to “love” running to participate in this event. Walkers are also welcome. The cost of registration for adults varies between $40 and $45 and between $35 and $40 for youths, with the price increasing as the event gets closer. Registration is open online until Feb. 6. Gigi’s Cupcakes will be hosting a “pack and pickup” on Friday, Feb. 7, where runners can come and pick up their numbers. People can register at this event or on the day of the race, too, from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m.

GEIST & FISHERS GET ROMANTIC

WHERE TO DINE WITH YOUR VALENTINE Writer / Anne E. O’Connor Photography / Carly Lyon

Valentine’s Day might mean cards and gifts of candy and flowers, but for many it is a day to enjoy a romantic meal. The holiday of love has roots in an ancient Roman fertility festival. In the Middle Ages this old tradition merged with stories of different saints named Valentine, and a new holiday was born. Whether you are planning to celebrate with a candlelit dinner for two, a meal with the kids or by taking a stash of sweet baked goods home, you can feast in style, right here in Geist and Fishers.

ROMANCE 65 YEARS IN THE MAKING Sweethearts Bob Albright and Joy Brindle are reunited and spend their first Valentine’s Day together in 65 years.

stop thinking about her since our first meeting because our last names are similar.” Bob added, “I don’t know if she is alive or dead, but I need to find out and ask for forgiveness.” My first question was, “What did you do that needs forgiving?” His answer: He only wished to ask forgiveness for breaking her heart.

Writer / Kara Reibel

Bob Albright and Joy Brindle first met back in 1943. Joy worked at the soda fountain where Bob’s dad was a pharmacist. Bob, who is five years older than Joy, had been out of high school and was preparing to serve his country. Joy was the only one, other than Bob’s parents, who wrote to him while he was overseas. Bob served in the Army as a combat photographer (see atGeist.com archives for July 2013 issue for his WWII story) and claims it was the letters from back home that truly helped morale. Once back from the Pacific theater, Bob and Joy dated for two years. She was finishing high school when he returned from the war and Bob attended her Tech HS senior prom. Joy was to attend Indiana University, where she majored in education. Bob began working for the Eli Lilly clinic as its first professional photographer. Being in two different worlds, it was challenging for Bob to maintain a long-distance relationship, and one day during the fall of Joy’s sophomore year at IU, the letters stopped coming. “He broke my heart,” said Joy of Bob’s end to their relationship. But Joy continued her studies, where she met her husband, Richard, whom she was married to for 50 years. In April 2013, I had the privilege of interviewing Bob for the July Geist Community Newsletter article. Upon my second visit to his home for clarification of details for his article, Bob announced that he “missed out on marrying the love of his life, and he couldn’t

Bob is now 90 years old and has macular degeneration. Upon getting as many of the details about Joy as Bob could share, I set out to find her. Thanks to the Internet and some divine intervention, the task was relatively easy. Both are widowed and live in the same city, which helped the logistics of their reconciliation. Upon given Joy’s phone number, Bob called her almost immediately. His first words after all these years were, “Joy, this is Bob Albright. Don’t hang up!” It didn’t immediately register with Joy who was calling her, so she asked for clarification: “Who is this?” When Bob repeated his name, Joy, who had been standing by her phone, quickly sat down. “It was quite a shock,” says Joy. “To hear his voice after all these years, I just couldn’t believe it.” After the call, it wasn’t long before Joy drove over to Bob’s to meet him after all these years. “It was like we had never been apart,” says Joy. “We just talk forever and are having the best time,” adds Bob. The love story continues. Joy still has a ring that Bob gave her 65 years ago on Valentine’s Day. The couple are now engaged and living together. “I’m 90 years old!” says Bob. “I know who I want to spend the rest of my life with.” Kara Reibel lives in the Geist area with her family. In addition to writing, she owns Geist Pilates. Kara is working on Bob’s biography, Finding Joy.

FISHERS ON TAP

FEBRUARY 22, 4:00–7:00 P.M. FORUM CONFERENCE AND EVENT CENTER / 11313 USA PARKWAY, FISHERS Writer / Clark Edwards

As we head into the gray days of winter, many of us are looking for a reason to get out and about. Well, I have an event for you to consider: Fishers On Tap — Winter. I recently sat down with Bill Jerrow and Michele Whelchel, the co-chairs for the Fishers On Tap Indiana craft beer-tasting

fundraiser, and discovered that the event is much more than an excuse to try some great local beers. In addition to sampling beer from local breweries, attendees can enjoy food samples provided by some local restaurants, including a dessert booth featuring mini cupcakes. Live music will be provided by Phoebe and the Mojo Makers. There will also be a 50-50 raffle and home brewing demonstrations.

Fishers On Tap is brought to you by the Fishers Rotary Club, which comprises 116 men and women who believe in service above self. Since the inception of the club in 1992, members have raised and donated more than $670,000 to more than 85 nonprofit organizations and given an untold number of volunteer service manhours. Some of the Fishers Rotary projects include: • Kids Voice: serving at-risk children • Pink Ribbon Connection: breast cancer support • Promising Futures: anger management for youth • Girls on the Run: adolescent girls’ self-image • Hear Indiana: hearing-challenged resources • Youth Mentoring Initiative: one-on-one help • Fishers Liberty Plaza: celebrating our veterans • Prevail: victims of crime and domestic abuse • Fishers Fire Department • Brooks Place: grief counseling for youth • Ambassador House: local historical residence • College Scholarships: HSE and Fishers high schools • Shelter Box: disaster relief shelters • Fresh Starts: domestic violence survivors • Partners in Housing Development • Servants at Work: wheelchair ramp building • Alzheimer’s Association

22 / GEIST / FEBRUARY 2014 / atGeist.com

Fishers On Tap is not your typical beertasting event and is sought after by the breweries for the quality time and conversations they are able to have with local craft beer enthusiasts. But the real winners from this event will be the local charities serving children who will be the beneficiaries of this fundraiser.

“ We always look forward to the Fishers On Tap events because they do such a great job of combining craft beer, local food options and entertainment into a community-based event.” —Shane Pearson, Daredevil Brewing Co.

“ A great display of when local craft beer meets local food. Awesomeness!” —Jerry Connor, Bier Brewery So come out to Fishers On Tap and enjoy a fun evening with great food, craft beer and live music, and most important, support a great cause. Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased online at fishersontap.com. There are a limited number of tickets and they do sell out, so go online and secure your tickets today. For more information on the Fishers Rotary Club, visit fishersrotary.org.

What event wouldn’t be made better with baked goods fabricated with a little extra love and detail provided by a local baker with the old, familiar name of Mama Bear’s? Ray Cox added, “Craft beer drinkers go to great lengths to try something new or seek out a beer that’s made in very limited quantities. You have to keep up on it because there’s a new one every week almost.” Educating people about what they drink is part of their business and one of the things Elite Beverages contributes to the community through events like the upcoming Vines for Life tasting fundraiser event Feb. 21 at the Hawthorns Golf & Country Club, benefiting three local cancer charities. Originally a wine-tasting event, this year they’re adding craft beer and craft liquors. “Not everyone drinks wine, and a lot of wine drinkers also drink beer and spirits, so it’s a good combination,” Ray Cox says.

SNOWPOCALYPSE FRANKENSTORM PROVIDES SOME LEVITY Writer / Alexandra Stewart

I am sure you are all aware of the most recent snowstorm that attacked Indiana right after New Year’s. If you weren’t conscious of this weather development, I might be a bit worried. The temperature for most of Jan. 6 was -14 degrees F, which is the coldest it has been in 20 years. Weather channels were warning that frostbite could happen in 10 minutes with how low the temperatures dropped, and they advised people from venturing outdoors. It was also stated that Jan. 5 was Indianapolis’ snowiest day since the “Blizzard of 1978” with 11 inches of snowfall. At 7 a.m. the wind chills were said to be in the negative 30 to negative 50 range. On Jan. 6, authorities restricted travel to only essential personnel, which includes snowplows, police, and most important, news trucks. Of course, as much as we appreciate the warnings of the local weather forecasters, many people find the seeming fascination they have with storms somewhat overbearing. This, of course, is understandable when you see them out driving on the roads that they advise people not to take, while recording themselves.

Facebook users commented on the actions of the news teams. “I agree that the media repeated itself. I also don’t understand why the reporters have to be out showing/telling us how cold and windy it is,” Jim Shaver writes. Another woman gives her take on the news. “I felt like I was very prepared for it, and it was just as predicted. Little bit of overkill once the snow had fallen.” This is accurate in the respect that even though it was quite repetitive, the news greatly prepared many people for the oncoming storm. The creator of the Geist Community Newsletter, Tom Britt, had some fun imitating these people during the storm by recording himself while driving around. The Geist Community Newsletter has also been calling this storm the Snowpocalypse Frankenstorm as voted on by Facebook users on the newsletter’s site. As easy as it is to make light of this situation, it is also wrong to forget about those who got in accidents during this storm. I personally saw a car that had run off the side of the road, and I found it frightening that something like that could easily happen to me or someone I hold dear. So I will say right now that if anyone got hurt because of this or

knows someone who was harmed during this time, I offer my sincere condolences, and I promise to keep all of you in my prayers. I hope that everyone had a great extra break though!

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP SCHOOL FOUNDATION ANNUAL CELEBRATION SCHOOLS SCORE WITH “LIGHT THEIR FUTURE” CELEBRATION Writer / Anne E. O’Connor

Over the last 30 years, one organization has raised more than $4 million for the Lawrence Township Public Schools. During that time, more than 300,000 students in one of the largest school district in the state have benefited from the additional funding that resulted. The Lawrence Township School Foundation, marking its 30-year anniversary, has big plans in store for 2014. The organizers of the 14th annual “Light Their Future” Celebration hope to have 600 guests and raise $100,000. The event is the largest fundraiser on the Foundation’s yearly calendar. “It’s a springboard not only for fundraising but also for building community and encouraging camaraderie and cooperation,” says volunteer “Light Their Future” Celebration Director, Barb Austin, “all the things you would want in your school community.” The “Light Their Future” Celebration will be held Feb. 28 at The Fountains in Carmel, located at 502 E. Carmel Dr. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and silent

Austin is joined by two honorary chairs this year: Tom Britt, atGeist.com publisher, and Brett Crousore, principal of Lawrence North High School.

Community Health Network, Cannon IV, Simon Property Group and Crown Hill Funeral Home are among the business The organizers expect to see many of the sponsors. TWO LOCAL TV STARS “RUSSIAN” TO THE WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2014 / GEIST / 41

Anne Marie Tiernon and Dave Calabro are headed to Sochi Russia to cover their 10th Winter Olympic Games for WTHR 13.

Writer / Neal G. Moore Photographer / Brenda Staples Photography

T

he memory is vivid. A surreal, spectacular moment in the mountains near Vancouver. “I was watching gold medalist Shaun White snowboarding — not something I’d normally do,” recalled Anne Marie Tiernon. “And I thought, here I am a Fishers mother of three, and I’m at the halfpipe — that’s kind of cool!” For Carmel resident Dave Calabro, the spectacularly surreal happened one summer on an Olympic basketball court where he found himself serendipitously rebounding for Kobe Bryant and LeBron James at a Dream Team practice. “That’s one of those moments you’ll never forget,” he smiled.

Calabro, Tiernon and their broadcast crew are ticketed for Russia’s Imeretinskaya Valley and the city on the Black Sea coastline where the games are to be played out. “It’s the ultimate challenge in our business. So many variables to deal with. It’s a much grander stage,” explained Calabro during a recent interview at WTHR studios, and half a world away from Sochi. “There’s the travel, the technology, the language. But, the experiences you have are second to none.” “It’s definitely a challenge, but I welcome it,” agreed Tiernon. “It gets you out of the routine.” A glamorous, globe-trotting assignment? You bet, but Calabro and Tiernon emphasize that it’s also a lot of hard work. For every transfixing moment spent watching and then reporting on the power and body control of, say, gymnast Gabby Douglas, the two TV veterans log dozens of hours off the air, working behind the scenes to track down stories in not particularly convenient venues, and readying those reports for multiple broadcasts.

For more than a decade, WTHR viewers have enjoyed watching news and sports anchors Tiernon and Calabro beam back the stories of Hoosier connections to the world’s most compelling, and sometimes controversial, athletic event. The Channel 13 duo has a combined 10 Olympics under their belts, and yet they retain the same high level of excitement about this latest five-ring Typically, Tiernon appears on WTHR’s spectacle: the XXII Winter Olympic Games “Sunrise,” setting the table for the day’s in Sochi, Russia, Feb. 7-23. events (there’s a nine-hour time difference between Sochi and Indy); both make a 42 / GEIST / FEBRUARY 2014 / atGeist.com

joint appearance on the air midday; then Calabro handles the video highlights and event results for the station’s late newscasts. “We have a battle plan for each day, then the stories just evolve,” Calabro said, recalling the frantic circumstances at a recent Summer Games. “You’re with Michael Phelps, then 20 minutes later you have to go chase Gabby Douglas. The stories change so dramatically: The president’s going to be here; Gabby’s going for the gold today! It just becomes a blur.” Live shots and taped reports are required morning, noon and night — what the TV types call “feeding the beast.” Erratic hours, poor diets, outof-whack body clocks and insufficient sleep combine to exact an exhausting toll. “Adrenaline, adrenaline, adrenaline — and then you crash,” Tiernon said. Recent history reminds us that Olympic coverage can also be dangerous. Calabro vividly recalls the domestic terror bombing at the Summer Games in Atlanta. “We were in Centennial Park at the very place where the bomb was placed — two hours earlier,” he said. “All hell broke loose. I was on a rooftop doing live reports. It was crazy.” At the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy, a car bomb was discovered. “We paid a taxi driver to get us closer to the scene to get

footage of the [controlled] detonation and then shared it with NBC,” he said. And while a threat of international terrorism hovers over the Sochi Games, Tiernon and Calabro know from experience that security will be smothering, and therefore likely effective.

Seeking no sympathy, Tiernon and Calabro confess that their monthlong absences are keenly felt on the homefront. “It’s a total blessing to do this, but a total hardship on our families,” noted Calabro.

“We have options now that we didn’t have before, like Skype,” Tiernon said. And, family and friends can easily follow the goings-on using social media.

Another upside is the tremendous ratings bump WTHR enjoys during Olympic broadcast cycles. While the investment necessary The vast majority of their to staff the games is significant, Olympic experience has been strong viewership justifies the positive and includes a healthy “And I thought, here I am a Fishers mother of three, expense. “Indianapolis is always in dose of respect and admiration and I’m at the halfpipe — that’s kind of cool!” the top 10 nationally for Olympic for the skill and discipline viewership,” said Tim Warner, necessary for athletes to compete — Anne Marie Tiernon WTHR’s director of sales. “The at the highest level. “The people reason is that we send these two [Tiernon are freaky talented — the elite in the world,” “I don’t think people realize the things you have to sacrifice. But the experiences are and Calabro] over there — it all plays into Tiernon marveled. “There’s nothing like worth it.” Communication technology helps it. People tune in because of the extra that seeing an athlete you’ve been following we give them.” Calabro added, “People here to ease, somewhat, the pain of separation. standing on the medal podium. And, are hungry for the Olympics. Hoosiers are nothing like seeing them fail. You can’t help patriotic, and they rally around it.” but feel for them.”

atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2014 / GEIST / 43

Hoosiers love hearing about the Olympic experience. Tiernon frequently shares her post-games stories with service clubs; Calabro, with school kids. Both predict the story of these games will be the emergence of a new crop of rising stars. Two other stories to watch for are an IU law professor working in Sochi as a drug-testing arbitrator and an aerodynamic technology for bobsleds developed by Panther Racing in Indianapolis.

P

r i v a t e

“We get along great,” Calabro said, chalking up their success to mutual respect and having worked together for so many years. “It’s the ultimate feeling when you believe you’ve met the challenge,” added Tiernon. PACERS FORWARD SETTLES IN AT GEIST

Pacers forward and former Argentinian standout Luis Scola settles in at Geist, just in time for his children’s first snow. 46 / GEIST / FEBRUARY 2014 / atGeist.com

Writer / Pat Carlini Photographer / Brenda Staples Photography

S

itting at the bar in the lower level of his modern, contemporarystyle Geist home, talking to Luis Scola is almost like talking to any other guy. He enjoys sports, good movies, the music of U2 and spending time with his kids. But when the 6-foot-9-inch Pacers forward gets up from his chair, you know this is no ordinary man. His height alone seems to call the room to attention, much like the veteran player often does when he pulls a great move on the basketball court. And yet the 33-year-old Scola is a down-toearth guy who seems truly grateful for how far he’s come since his days as a young boy growing up on a farm in Argentina. His dad played semipro basketball, and when Luis picked up a basketball at age 7, he knew he would never put it down again. “I’ve had a great career,” says Scola. “I’ve been around the world and have lived in some great cities just doing what I love — playing basketball!” He met his high school sweetheart, Pamela, at 16, and the two took off together the next year as Scola played on the Argentina team. Scola wound up in Houston and then on to the Phoenix Suns before being acquired by the Pacers last year. Scola, Pamela and their four young boys, ages 8 and under, moved 6-foot-9-inch Luis Scola towers over most visitors to into their Geist home just last November. “It his Geist home, including atGeist.com’s Pat Carlini. was right before the big snow,” laughs Scola. “The kids haven’t seen snow like that, so we “I like to get to know the area when my tried to get out and enjoy it — we tried to family and I move to a new city,” says Scola. build a snowman!” Scola says he learned about Geist through friends and wanted to make his home here too. Fellow teammates Paul George and George Hill are also Geist residents. “I love the spacious backyard with a pool,” says Scola, who enjoys grilling out and a glass of red wine now and then. “I also plan to get a boat now that I have a dock just down the road!” Scola also wants to “explore Indiana.”

But for now, Scola just wants to play ball and put his best foot forward, and with a size 17 shoe, that’s one foot that will not go unnoticed! Good luck, Luis Scola, and welcome to Geist!

Matt McNairy, Chalene Braun, Tim Bachus and Rachel Quade chat it up at Casler’s Kitchen & Bar discussing their bucket list items. Matt wants to run with the bulls, and Tim wants to attend an Arsenal soccer game in London.

GIRLS ABOUT TOWN WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? Writers / Rachel Quade and Chalene Braun Photographer / Carly Lyon

Well, it’s February, and by now, most of you have probably broken your New Year’s resolutions! We’ve put those 5 pounds back on that we had lost. We’ve thrown away the box of cigarette patches. We didn’t stick to our “no more alcohol” resolution — that one never really had a chance, did it? So since we’ve proved that we are unable to stick to our short-term goals, we thought, let’s think more long term. What are the things in life you’d like to do before you kick the bucket? What’s on your bucket list? To help us answer that question, we headed out one very snowy and cold evening to one of our local watering holes. We found that people have no shortage of things they want to do or accomplish. Many of them had some pretty well-thought-out plans to make these items on their lists happen. The first person we spoke with was Rachel Schaller. She is in her 30s, lives in Fishers and is in sales for a living. Schaller wants to run the San Diego marathon in June. She’s been a runner since college and has run one other marathon in her life. She’s been

training with her friend, Jen Miller, and they run a couple times a week. Another item on Schaller’s bucket list is to live in South Carolina. She loves the weather there and has a three-year plan to make it happen. It was pretty obvious that Schaller is a goaloriented girl! Her other aspiration is to enjoy a vacation in Hawaii. She also would like to be successful enough in her career to afford her husband the ability to retire at age 40. Lucky husband! With Schaller’s determined personality, there seems to us no doubt that she will achieve the items on her list! The next people we spoke to were newlyweds Thomas and Amie Dent. They started dating while they both attended Indiana University, so it should come as no surprise that one of their bucket list items is to go see IU play in the NCAA national championship game. Go Hoosiers! At some point, they’d also like to return to where they honeymooned in Maui. They enjoyed the adventures of sailing and zip lining. They also loved the beautiful beaches. One other destination they’d like to visit is Greece. Amie also said starting a family was definitely part of what she looks forward to in life. 50 / GEIST / FEBRUARY 2014 / atGeist.com

We chatted up Tim Bachus and Matt McNairy at the bar. They were both in their 30s. Bachus asked if we wrote for a family magazine, because that would help determine his answers. HA! He told us he’d like to go to an Arsenal soccer game in London. He’s played soccer since he was a kid and thought that would always be fun. McNairy had an even more adventurous goal. He wants to go to the running of the bulls in Spain. When we seemed surprised, he explained you don’t have to be the fastest runner — you just have to be faster than the slowest runner! Both of these guys said that they’d also like to take a trip to Lambeau Field to see the Green Bay Packers play. We did find some common themes as we listened to people talk about their dreams. Travel was a really popular goal. For instance, Jake Brower wants to visit all seven continents. This world traveler has already been to four, so he’s well on his way. Lori Mitchell said she wants to visit Israel and see where the Lord walked. Mitchell’s husband, Kirby, would like to go to Yellowstone and see Old Faithful. Kristy Patterson wants to go to the City of Lights to put her four years of high school French to use.

Ooh la la! Denny Ward wants to ride his Harley to Roswell, N.M., and UFO watch with his wife, next to a campfire. Adventures were another hot topic. Missy Card and Amber Ward both said they want to drive an Indy race car, or any race car. Lori Moore would like to try skydiving for her great adventure. Getting a small aircraft pilot’s license is on Katie Dukes’ bucket list. Kavan and Kassie Braun want to scuba dive along the Great Barrier Reef. One thing is for certain — Geist is definitely not short on adventurous souls! So, all of these ideas got your Girls about Town thinking — what’s on our bucket list? Charlene wants to go see the Northern Lights. Rachel would like to go to the Rose Bowl parade and watch her beloved Ohio State Buckeyes play later that day in the bowl game. With myriad opportunities out there, it might be better termed a list for living.

Kim Goodwin of Pendleton visited the Bahamas which gave her the itch to spend two weeks in Hawaii. Her friend, Christy Patterson, took four years of French in high school and has never been to France.

Katie Dukes of Pendleton wants to get her pilots license and Noblesville’s Tim Yohler wants to join the “mile high club.”

KAY & J SHOPPING SERVICES DELIVERING GROCERIES AT YOUR CONVENIENCE Writer / Janet C. Striebel

We spend a lot of precious time shopping for groceries while dodging people’s carts, backtracking to the aisle where we forgot to get something and standing in line at the checkout. According to research, a woman will spend about three years of her life shopping. She will spend about as much time buying groceries and household items as on clothes. An April 2010 MailOnline.com article reports that, on average, we spend about 113 hours each year buying groceries and toiletries alone. What if we could hire someone else to battle this insane mundane rigmarole? Say “Welcome” to Kay & J Shopping Services, a new

business serving Geist and Lawrence residents that offers the luxury of taking your grocery list, shopping for the goods and delivering them right to your home at your convenience. They can also pick up prescriptions for you. “We would like to have people spend their time relaxing at home and not have to worry while we do the shopping for them,” says Kayla O’Neill, co-owner of Kay & J Shopping Services. She and her business partner, Jesse Clouse, are working hard to establish this service for anyone who needs it. Both Jesse and Kayla are driven to help the community whenever they can.

54 / GEIST / FEBRUARY 2014 / atGeist.com

You can email your grocery list to Kay & J Shopping Services or go online to complete the digital grocery list template, at kayandjshoppingservices.com. Simply upload your list and let Kay & J take care of the rest. As a courtesy, their website also features current grocery store ads from stores including Kroger, Marsh, WalMart and Aldi, so you can have access to the best deals. Many people dread going to the grocery store. Some hate driving to the store, fighting to get a close spot to the entrance. Some wish to avoid facing inclement weather conditions. Some are physically challenged and not able to get around very easily. Still, others are simply too busy with their work schedules to make time to face the crowds and chaos. Whatever your reason, you can find comfort in knowing that Kay & J Shopping Services is eager to help you.

CARING CREATORS OF HAPPY HOLIDAYS KAY & J SHOPPING SERVICES With the help of their co-op class, they Jesse, a senior at Lawrence North, volunteers his time mentoring the developmentally challenged students in the Best Buddies Program. He is taking an entrepreneurship class at the Mackenzie Carrier Center for Innovation and Technology where he has become an ambassador for his success. He appreciates the mentorship. “I am thankful that I have a lot of positive support from all of the teachers there — Mr. Berry, Mr. Inman, Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Miller. In fact, they have become an advisory committee for our business and have helped with a lot of things.” Kayla, a junior at Lawrence Central, excels as an international baccalaureate student ranking within the top 50 of her class. She participates in orchestra as a violinist and volunteers wherever she can, including St. Simon Church. She and Clouse have been involved in planning these community service projects:

EXPIRES 2/28/14

Several local boat dealers will have their 2014 models on display at the Indianapolis Boat, Sport & Travel Show starting Feb. 14.

INDIANAPOLIS BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW A SURE SIGN OF SPRING Writer / Debra Legg

For baseball fans, nothing brings a smile like the words “pitchers and catchers report,” a phrase that tells them spring training is starting and lazy summer days at the ballpark can’t be too far behind. For lovers of the great outdoors, the words “Indianapolis Boat, Sport & Travel Show” summon a similar giddy grin, because they know it won’t be long before they’re soaking up the sunshine at Geist Reservoir.

The staff from Geist Marina will be back at this year’s show, set for Feb. 14-23 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Along with the commercial exhibits, the exposition will include special contests, expert speakers, seminars and a chance to ride in a 5,000-gallon saltwater tank with sharks. There’s something for the kids, too, from a trout-fishing pond to free gear on Kids Day, Feb. 22. Geist Marina has an expanded space in the Boat Pavilion this year, letting staff bring eight or nine boats instead of the usual three.

“The boat show always brings out spring fever,” says Kent Duckwall, the Geist Marina director of marine marketing. “It lets people The showroom will highlight 2014 models start getting excited about boating again.” from Indiana-based Sylvan Marine. Geist Marina plans to bring mainly pontoons, 56 / GEIST / FEBRUARY 2014 / atGeist.com

though the company will show off some fishing boats as well this year, says Duckwall. Today’s pontoons can be loaded with features unheard of a generation ago, including MP3 ports and refrigerators. They can be configured to suit your lifestyle, whether your priority is fishing, swimming or lounging in the sun. This year Sylvan has introduced optional vinyl decking, a feature that makes cleanup easier when you don’t have to worry about sopping water out of carpet, Duckwall noted. Visitors at the show are free to walk around — and in — the selection of 24- to 18-foot pontoons and see for themselves what size best fits their needs, according to Duckwall.

In general, an 18-foot pontoon will handle eight to 10 people, while a 24-footer can accommodate 13 to 14. Geist Marina can special-order larger pontoons, but boaters best not delay. “Special orders in February usually don’t arrive until late April or early May,” Duckwall explained. “If they wait much longer after the boat show, they won’t have it in time for the start of the season.”

“We can use our experience on the lake to help educate people,” Duckwall says. “We can help them figure out the size and horsepower they need.” That’s the advantage to buying a boat locally, notes Duckwall. “We’ll have people come to us with questions for years afterward, and we’re always happy to help.”

Follow Us Online

Duckwall expects to see up to 1,000 visitors a day during the boat show’s weekend dates. Some will be shoppers, some will be dreaming of a “someday” boat and still others will come armed with questions. Sylvan factory representatives will be on hand to handle questions about the line, while the Geist staff pride themselves on being go-to resources for queries about issues ranging from boat maintenance to the Geist Reservoir, central Indiana’s favorite destination for water recreation.

BITES FOR BYTES FUNDRAISER AT ST. SIMON GET SET TO EAT FOR EDUCATION AT ANNUAL ‘BITES FOR BYTES’ EVENT Writer / Nancy Kennedy

Whether your preferred method is to nibble, sample, sip, dip or devour, you can do it all at the annual “Bites for Bytes” tasting event from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, benefiting St. Simon the Apostle Catholic School’s technology department. In its 14th year, this annual fundraiser held

Kitchen, beef tenderloin and herbed shrimp from Jonah’s Market, and shrimp and grits from The Fort Grill. “They ran out of shrimp and grits last year,” says Duggan. New this year is Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria. “We’re hoping they’ll do desserts since they got such a good response after they catered our Royal Extravaganza event,” notes Duggan. Tickets for the adults-only event are $30 in advance or $35 at the door and include the opportunity to sample dishes from any or all of about 20 local eateries, plus beer, wine or soda. Tickets can be purchased online at atGeist.com. Also on the menu: live music from local band Anna and the Kings and a “wine wall” where, for a $20 donation, people can choose from among bottles of wine ranging in value from $10 to $100, all donated by St. Simon parishioners.

“We also have a silent auction,” says Duggan. “What’s really fun, we gear our auction items toward what we call ‘priceless items,’ such as lunch with the vice principal, or a teacher will come over and read you a bedtime story — experiences that are fun and make our lives better. People really get behind that.” In addition, guests can participate in a 50/50 drawing. Tickets are $25 apiece or five for $100. The winner can choose either the cash payout or free tuition for a year. The goal for this year’s event is to raise $45,000. “We raised that last year, which was our banner year,” says Duggan. “So, we’d like to do that again this year. We want to buy 65 iPads.” Last year they bought “COWs,” computers on wheels, as well as some iPads. Knowing where the money goes makes a difference, Duggan explained. “It’s always

been about our technology department, and we had good attendance in the beginning, but then it dropped; people didn’t grasp where the money was going. But once we started saying, ‘This year we want to buy this,’ everyone jumped on board — it’s tangible.” And delicious. More than 400 people came last year. “People have really rallied behind this,” says Duggan. “They see the value of our kids having the latest and greatest technology. Plus, it’s just a really fun, casual event with a lot of great food.” St. Simon the Apostle church and school are at 8155 Oaklandon Rd., Indianapolis. For more information, go to their Facebook.com/bitesforbytes St. Simon the Apostle’s Taste of Technology. Also, silent auction bids can be preregistered at Qtego.com.
