Bonsai: Trees as Living Art

In a Center Grove backyard, the world-class bonsai master, Mark Fields, has his bonsai collection, nursery, and school called Bonsai by Fields, LLC. A well-known bonsai master, Craig Coussins of the UK says this about Mark: “His beautiful nursery contains many fine specimens and a great deal of excellent material to create and develop your own bonsai under Mark’s expert tutelage.”

Mark’s interest in bonsai started when he was 8 years old and grew as he trained in Europe and studied and showed across the USA from New York to Oregon. Bonsai (pronounced bōn-ˈsī) is an art that started in China and Japan and became popular in the USA with the movie, Karate Kid. Bonsai means a tree on a tray and is the art of growing miniature trees.

We’ve selected a few photos that will give a glimpse of Mark’s bonsai knowledge and show some of his collection. Just like Mark, his 5-year-old twins, Lincoln and Addison, have started young in their love of bonsai, and we’ll use their favorites to tell about bonsai. Lincoln’s favorite is a Trident Maple “forest,” Addison’s favorite is a Bougainvillea with pink flowers, and Mark’s favorite is a Chinese Elm. Lincoln’s maples give us one example of a bonsai process where trees are started from cuttings, allowed to grow outside, then brought into the tray where shaping steps begin. The process continues until you have the bonsai in a display tray like the picture of Trident Maples that Mark started in 1995. july 2013

These are living trees, so maples will drop their leaves, or like Addison’s Bougainvillea, they will bloom with flowers and some will have fruit. The trees are kept miniature by controlling their growth with pruning, but the fruit will be regular size; so an apple bonsai tree can only have a few fruits allowed to stay on the tree.

The technique of wiring is done in Mark’s favorite, the Chinese Elm, but you’d have to look close to see the wires.

Working with live trees is an artistic process that never ends, and you can see that in Mark’s beautiful Gingko, imported from Japan, that is over 100 years old.

See the trees as living art, and you can imagine the cascading Ponderosa Pine growing on a windswept Colorado mountain; feel serene wandering in a maple forest among the fall colors, and then appreciate the heritage in the 100-year-old Gingko.

Mark recommends a book by Craig Coussins, Bonsai for Beginners, and for children, Bonsai for Kids by Frank Milhalic. According to Mark, the best way to get started with bonsai is a “hands-on” approach with workshops or classes or joining a club like the Indianapolis Bonsai Club.

rilling is an art; it takes practice and experience to produce a juicy steak with perfect grill marks! Some people seem to have a knack for it, while others turn out dry and overcooked cuts of meat. Recently I had the opportunity to chat with two Center Grove area “Grill Masters,” Kurt Kuehn and Lee Tetrick, who were kind enough to share some tips and secrets.

Any discussion on grilling has to include the subject of gas vs. charcoal. For Kuehn and Tetrick, both of Greenwood, it boils down to convenience. Although Tetrick, a retiree, prefers the taste of charcoal grilling, he enjoys the instant heat from the flip of a switch and the ease of clean up that gas grills offer. In fact, his wife, Rhonda, jokes that although their grill is several years old, friends and guests assume it’s brand new. His secret is cleaning the grate with a balled up piece of foil and a damp rag both before and after cooking.

Kuehn, a physical education teacher, prefers gas because it’s cleaner, easier to work with, and helps him avoid the burnt taste that sometimes comes with charcoal grilling. Just don’t do what he did, he jokes; once when changing out the propane tank, he inadvertently put the old one right back on and didn’t realize his mistake until he tried to fire up the grill again.

Both grill guys enjoy using foil while grilling. Tetrick places a sheet of foil on top of the grate when he cooks fish like salmon, and foil “packets” are something both men employ.

Kuehn takes rinsed raw shrimp, sprinkles them very lightly with seafood seasoning, wraps it in a foil packet, heats the grill to medium, and in five minutes has a delicious appetizer or entree. Tetrick uses foil packets to cook any kind of vegetable but especially sliced peppers to serve as a side. He drizzles the vegetables with a little olive oil, seals the foil up, and cooks them for 15 to 20 minutes. He claims, “That’s the only way to go. I guarantee that if you do it once, you’ll do it again.”

Kurt Kuehn’s Kabobs For eight kabobs, cut up four chicken breasts into large cubes. Slice or keep whole vegetables such as cherry tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini slices, onions, bell peppers, or mushrooms. If you are using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 20 minutes. Marinade the chicken in ½ cup olive oil, ¼ cup red wine vinegar, 1 teaspoon oregano, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon lemon pepper, ¼ teaspoon marjoram, and 1 clove garlic put through a press. Thread the chicken and vegetables on the skewers and grill over medium heat about 10 minutes, turning once.

While Tetrick uses rubs on steaks, pork chops, and chicken breasts, Kuehn is a marinade man. One of his signature dishes is chicken shish kabobs marinated in Greek salad dressing. Both men advocate using medium heat to avoid burnt, charred food caused by a fire flaring up. In fact, Tetrick states that on most gas grills, the temperature gauge may register 300 to 350 degrees, but it is actually about 400 to 425 degrees.

So how do those great grill marks come about? According to the Weber Grill Company, the trick is to sear the steak on high heat (450 to 550 degrees) and then finish the cooking at a lower temperature. They suggest you place the meat at a 10 o’clock angle for two minutes and then move it to a two o’clock angle for two more minutes. Repeat on the other side to get those gorgeous crosshatch marks. cg

Lee Tetrick’s Peppers in Foil Packets Slice up red, yellow, and green bell peppers along with an onion if desired. Toss with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of Italian seasoning and wrap in two square foil packets. Place packets on the grill and cook for 10 to 12 minutes on medium heat. Serve as a side or on Italian sausage or bratwurst. july 2013

Schools Take “Balanced” Approach | Barbara Augsdorfer

T

he last few notes of “Pomp and Circumstance” have barely faded away, and already schools are preparing for a new school year. It has nothing to do with time that seems to be going faster as people get older – or maybe it does. When the stores start putting out back-to-school supplies this month, rest assured you are not going crazy.

Many schools in the Center Grove area have adopted a balanced calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. Remember back in the “olden days” – when there were more cows than people – school ended in early June and didn’t start again until the day after Labor Day? The reason for this was so the children could help on the farm. Well, more city folk are here now, and city kids get bored by the end of June.

Summer school was one answer, but not everyone liked summer school. Isn’t that just like regular school with books and homework?

The balanced calendar is not that abomination where students are assigned a “track,” are in school for three months and off for one, sometimes with only a week’s break before starting the next grade. Instead the balanced calendar is three two-week breaks interspersed throughout the year.

Most schools start in early August, take a two-week break in October, a short break for Thanksgiving, two weeks off for Christmas and New Year, a two-week break in late March/early April, and then summer break is all of June and July. Many school districts throughout Indiana such as Indianapolis Public Schools, Brownsburg, and Warren Township have adopted the balanced calendar. According to a recent article in The Indianapolis Star, Warren Township Schools have been on the balanced calendar for three years and have started to see improvements in its ISTEP scores.

Yes, the balanced calendar takes some getting used to, and there are some pros and cons to it. One academic benefit is that with the two-week breaks, students who need help in a certain subject can get it from their teachers before getting

too far behind. In addition to extra help, schools also take the opportunity to offer enrichment courses for students who want the extra challenge. Teachers believe that with the shorter breaks, students retain more, and time is not wasted reteaching concepts that may have been forgotten between June and September. One disadvantage of the balanced calendar is that many of the buildings are in constant use, limiting access for cleaning, painting, and other maintenance duties. Childcare can also be an issue, but many schools offer extended care/camps when school is out.

In 2013-2014, Center Grove Community Schools (centergrove.k12.in.us), Greenwood Christian School (greenwoodchristian.com), and Saints Francis & Clare Catholic School (francisandclare.org) are using the balanced calendar. Greenwood Christian Academy (gcak12.org) is adopting a modified balanced calendar according to Principal Bruce Peters. “We take just a one-week fall break, one-week spring break, two weeks for Christmas, and school ends before Memorial Day,” says Peters.

“The majority of our kids are involved in activities in school, and even on break, kids still have to come to their activities. We looked at church schedules and mission trips and also considered [how a balanced calendar] can be an inconvenience to families.”

For Center Grove schools and Greenwood Christian School, the decision to adopt the balanced calendar was the result of a community survey taken prior to the 2012-2013 school year. Most of the respondents were for such a change.

During the breaks, Greenwood Christian School offers enrichment classes and camp. aints Francis & Clare Catholic School offers “Wolf Adventures Camp” during its fall and spring breaks. There’s really no time for students to be bored.

Two local private high schools with ties to the Center Grove community still adhere to a more traditional schedule: Lutheran High School (lhsi.org) begins classes on August 7, and Roncalli High School (roncalli.org) begins classes

on August 12. Both schools take a Friday-Monday break in the fall and a similar break in February (which doubles as “make-up snow days”). Both schools will finish their academic year before Memorial Day. “A whole school change to the balanced calendar must show the projection of adding strength to our school’s mission,” says Michael Brandt, Lutheran High School’s Head of School. “At this time, we do not feel that this calendar shift will positively affect our mission to prepare students for Christian life while providing academic excellence.”

However, if a student can’t wait until August to start school, maybe Center Grove High School’s online “Global Campus” is the answer. Online classes are also offered during the school year to avoid scheduling conflicts. You can read more about the Global Campus in this month’s cover article. Dare we say, life will be “balanced”?

The benefits for students are many: to prepare for college and their professional future in an increasingly digital world, be in control of their own learning, review class materials anytime anywhere, improve their technology skills by using state-ofthe-art learning tools, and receive more personalized attention from their teacher in a smaller class.

Global Campus courses fall into one of three categories: Ignite, Revive, and Niche. Ignite is the first year’s offering of 16 courses, 9 of which are taking place this summer as well. A blend of required and special interest courses, Ignite is for students earning initial credit (meaning they are taking the coursework for the first time). The eight-week summer Ignite courses kicked off June 3 with 180 students.

Approximately 200 students are enrolled in Ignite courses during the school year starting August 1 for 18 weeks.

enter Grove Global Campus, a new online learning initiative of Center Grove Community School Corporation, is in full swing. The program meets a growing need for education in new and innovative ways as students seek increased course choices and flexibility in how they learn.

Global Campus is open to Center Grove High School (CGHS) students, as well as students in grades 9-12 from other schools including public, private, charter, or homeschool. Students may choose to take online courses to advance in their studies, take courses that could not previously fit in their schedule or are not otherwise available,

Launching summer 2014, Revive is a credit recovery program designed to help students get back on track for graduation. Niche will offer special interest, non-credit courses to anyone interested in learning new skills, such as resume building and digital photography. Niche targets a variety of learners including students, parents, and community members. The launch date has not been set.

, eLearning Director for Center Grove Global Campus Joanna joined Center Grove Community School Corporation in July 2012 where she works closely with CGHS teachers to support their online course design efforts.

Previously she served as Director of Online Development at the IU School of Education at IUPUI, working with hundreds of educators, teaching online graduate courses and providing workshops and professional development opportunities across the state. She continues to serve as an adjunct professor at IUPUI, teaching graduate-level courses in educational technology. As a CGHS graduate, Joanna says, “I am thrilled to have an opportunity to be employed in a district so near and dear to my heart. The teachers and administrators that I work with are highly dedicated and talented individuals, and I’m honored to be part of the Center Grove family.” Joanna and her husband, Chris, live in Center Grove with their three children.

Global Campus students use cuttingedge technology tools, including Google Docs, VoiceThread, and Canvas, to communicate, create, and actively participate in the course activities. Canvas is a robust learning management system that allows teachers to deliver online, blended and technology-enriched courses. VoiceThread technology enables students to create interactive JULY 2013

The project’s goal is to improve student achievement, engagement, collaboration, and communication.

“Just like in real-world settings, students will work with others to execute projects and receive their peers’ feedback,” says Joanna Ray, eLearning Director for Global Campus.

Courses have been designed with collaboration in mind, intentionally promoting social interaction as a crucial part of learning. “Learning does not happen in isolation. It is more meaningful when students can connect ideas and collaborate.” Smaller class sizes encourage students to foster collaborative relationships. Parents can even request a Canvas login to monitor assignments and receive text message reminders from teachers.

Online learning has come a long way. “The tools are much more sophisticated, allowing for some things to be done in online learning that cannot be done in a brick-andmortar classroom,” Joanna says.

Blended learning (a combination of online and traditional classroom learning) “provides students with the best of both worlds by allowing them to learn independently and engage in meaningful face-to-face dialogue.”

Seventeen CGHS teachers designed the first online courses. The team completed professional development training to better understand how to construct an online curriculum and teach students in online and blended environments. While Global Campus gives students increased flexibility, teachers are very involved in the learning process. The courses are instructor-paced with targeted deadlines to keep students on track.

Students needing help can meet with their teacher virtually or in-person throughout the course.

CGHS students only pay a $25 technology fee/course for Global Campus; the fee is waived for students receiving financial assistance. Students outside of the district pay $295/course plus the $25 technology fee. CGHS students receive a letter grade and credit for completed courses; students outside of the district receive a letter grade to transfer to their school.

As Global Campus continues to grow, the future is limitless. Besides developing the Revive and Niche course offerings, Joanna says the program will expand beyond CGHS. “Our goal will forever be meeting the needs of our students first and foremost, but we want to benefit learners all over. Moving forward, we intend to grow our course offerings, strategically offer courses that can most benefit learners and streamline the processes currently in place. We will also be looking for more outreach opportunities and district partnerships because there is great potential when joining forces with other districts.”

CG Fast Track A Back-to-School Experience

To do a job well, we need the proper tools. Students are not exempt from this fact. Our youth need their school supplies in striving to do their best.

Many years ago, the desire for every child to walk into school on the first day with their supplies weighed heavily on the heart of then-Sugar Grove sixth grade teacher, Kathy Sagorsky. As fate would have it, an anonymous donor gave the school a gift card for such an initiative. With the assistance of her friend and thenguidance counselor Claire Taylor, the two women called on local churches and community leaders for support with their endeavor. “Overwhelmingly, they agreed, and Fast Track was born,” Kathy recalled with a smile.

Seventy volunteers served nearly 100 students that year with t-shirts, haircuts, school supplies, immunizations, free lunch forms,

shoes, and a hotdog lunch. Today, Fast Track is widely used in five school districts, including Center Grove (CG), under the United Way of Johnson County.

With the direction of Carla Slauter, CG’s Health Services Coordinator, over 420 CG students last summer received their supplies for the first day of school. “We get a percentage of funds raised by the United Way each year through their program called Stuff the Bus, but our event is mainly supported by the generous contributions from our community, its faith partners, and our corporation’s PTOs. Without their continued support, CG Fast Track as it is would not be possible.”

This spring, letters were sent out to students in need inviting them to attend the 2013 CG Fast Track. “Invitations are RSVP only through the request of each Center Grove school’s guidance counselor,” stated Carla. “But if someone comes in with a need on the day of Fast Track, we will not turn anyone away.”

A Time of Trial - A Time to Trust

Physical therapist Jamie Hayden encourages Kelli Smith’s progress.

| Joyce Long After his 39th birthday in January 2008, Jamie Hayden, owner of Hayden’s Physical Therapy, knew something was amiss. Usually full of energy, he realized he was overly tired and having a difficult time concentrating, signaling the need to seek medical attention. Within a week, Jamie met with his family doctor, Dr. Mark Stein, to discuss his symptoms.

Dr. Stein ordered a full blood work panel.

After tests indicated his free testosterone level hovered near zero, they performed additional diagnostic testing. Then came the MRI with a contrast of his head/brain. Jamie glanced at the scan, noting a mass slightly larger than a golf ball embedded in his brain’s parietal lobe. “Hey, that’s not supposed to be there.”

The technician hesitated and became quiet.

still managed to share a funny story that evening. Despite Melissa’s reluctance, they decided to use their previouslypurchased Bruce Springsteen concert tickets. While there, Melissa left for the restroom crying. After her phone fell into the toilet and the toilet automatically flushed, she returned to her seat laughing—welcomed comic relief in an emotionally intense night!

Joyce Long, Greenwood Middle School language arts teacher from 1992-2000, has called Center Grove home for the past 25 years. Currently Joyce works as the communications coordinator for Center for Global Impact and is passionate about engaging people to empower the poor.

Maintaining a positive attitude, they continued with their next step, a meeting with neurosurgeon Dr. Carl Sartorius of St. Vincent Hospital. After extensive testing, surgery was scheduled for April 11. While the tumor was extracted easily, a blood clot developed a few days later, requiring more time in ICU. The next setback involved a cerebrospinal fluid infection requiring more hospital time. Then an additional surgery removed the infected skull bone-flap that provided tumor access.

During this time, Jamie also experienced salt wasting syndrome and temporary blindness.

“I don’t remember seeing my girls after surgery. In fact, that period of time has simply disappeared.”

The tumor’s effects have left Jamie with diminished cognitive recall and difficulty with depth perception and spatial orientation. As a physical therapist, Jamie always dreaded telling his patients their health issues could result in losing their ability to drive and, consequently, their independence. During his recovery, he experienced how that felt. Even now, five years later, it’s not easy. “My new norm is a moving target. Some days are awesome.

Some are awful. I still have seizures and take lots of medicine. It’s hardest when my daughters see me sick or having seizures. It makes me heavy-hearted.”

Besides continual support from his family, his church, and his co-workers at Hayden’s Physical Therapy, one of the biggest blessings came from well wishers on Caring Bridge, a website where both patient and family can update status and others can post encouragement and prayer.

As he did five years ago, Jamie still depends upon his faith, family, and friends. cg

Making ¢ents Graduation Season Brings College Planning to Mind

| Kate Rhoten It was that time of year again. Graduation ceremonies and open houses started taking place at the end of May and on into June. I don’t have a graduate, but my oldest son is entering high school this year. We are only four years away from the one event most families and students look forward to with the hopes of college afterwards.

Hopes and dreams of college can’t be just that. It takes work by the student and a plan for paying for tuition, room and board, books, and the other miscellaneous expenses. What are the savings options for the college dream?

First, there are 529 plans which are legally known as “qualified tuition plans.” The 529 in the name is in reference to section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code pertaining to college savings and how the money is treated for tax purposes when money is withdrawn from the plan. The 529 is available in two types of plans: pre-paid tuition and college savings plan.

Pre-paid tuition plans are usually sponsored by state governments and do have residency restrictions. Some of the states that offer the pre-paid tuition guarantee the investments they sponsor. The tuition that is being pre-paid is locked in per unit or credit. Some private colleges and universities sponsor pre-paid tuition plans.

There has been news that some states have stopped offering the pre-paid tuition plans to their residents, and many do not have guarantees. In USA Today, June 8, 2012, an article reported that several of the 11 still open pre-paid tuition plans were not offering guarantees. In fact, some have increased their premiums well above the cost of current tuition.

A college savings plan works like a retirement account in that you can put money in the account that is owned by a parent or relative. A beneficiary is named on the account; this is the person who will use the funds for college. Within the plan, there are many investment options ranging from stock mutual funds, bond mutual funds, and money market funds, as well as age-based portfolios. Age-based portfolios put the account on autopilot meaning that as the student gets closer to college age, the portfolio becomes more conservative. can create a nice little chunk of money for college expenses.

The Indiana 529 Savings Plan gives a tax credit (not deduction) to contributors of the plan. The credit is 20% of what is contributed with a max of $1,000 tax credit per year.

Another option you may have heard about is the Coverdell Education Savings Account. These were around long before the 529 and work in the same manner with a contribution limit of $2,000 per year. It is a little more lenient as the funds can be used for primary school, not just college. I worked in the banking industry, and many institutions no longer offer Cloverdell accounts.

The challenge with college planning is to understand what you can and can’t do with the accounts as well as the risks associated with each of these plans. Since 1990 through 2011, tuition has increased 7% annually. I don’t know about you, but I think this is a little scary. Our incomes are not going up this fast. We can hope for a windfall (lottery anyone?), or we can plan as early as when the kiddos are crawling. The key is to know the options available and understand what you are doing. Work with an investment specialist to learn about these options.

A GOOD FOUNDATION | Ann Craig-Cinnamon There’s an organization in Johnson County that rather quietly goes about its business of handing out millions of dollars in grants and scholarships and making the community a better place, and you’ve probably never even heard of it. The Johnson County Community Foundation (JCCF) has been around in some form since 1989. It has grown from raising and managing $1 million in assets with a few dozen funds to handling assets worth $19 million with over 240 funds today. Over the past 20 years, JCCF has awarded grants totaling more than an astounding $10 million. These funds represent a wide variety of initiatives, including education, community development, arts and culture,

It has provided grants for the food pantry that Gleaners Food Bank operates at Center Grove High School. It supplied financial backing for the handicap-accessible Independence Park and was the donation conduit for the collection of funds for the Arms of Life project. Arms of Life installed railroad crossing arms at the site of a tragic train/car crash that killed two young boys several years ago.

Ten Center Grove students have received scholarships from JCCF this year alone.

One of them is graduating senior Hollis VanFossen who received the Lilly Scholarship funded by Lilly Endowment. It pays for four years of tuition and fees for two students from Johnson County every year.

Center Grove resident Chuck Bailey set up a scholarship fund that provides a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior percussionist band member from Center Grove High School. Chuck says he set up the fund in honor of his wife who was very

involved with marching band and was the treasurer of the Band Boosters for several years. “She did all of this while battling colon cancer for nine years which took her life in August 2011. Our four children and I wanted to do something to keep her memory alive,” he says, and adds that he has been very satisfied with JCCF’s administration of the fund and would highly recommend it to others.
