RAISE YOUR HOPES FOR A FERTILE CROP By Dorothea Helms
Even with a compact backyard, you can have a vegetable garden that’s easy to plant and weed. This year, we decided we couldn’t live without fresh lettuce, onions, peas, beans and tomatoes, but with our arthritic knees, we didn’t look forward to the prospect of planting directly into the ground. Instead, we invested in a 4’ x 4’ raised garden frame. We had a lot of fun browsing through garden centres for seeds and plant material that was already started. Imagine our surprise when we saw sprouts and substantial growth in the plants within five days! Yes, I likely over-planted this bed, but forgive my over-enthusiasm. I will eliminate some sprouts as the season progresses. I also LOVE to grow herbs in pots, and my front patio looks fabulous with several containers billowing forth. I have parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, as well as basil. I haven’t had much luck with basil the past couple years, so I planted three kinds: regular sweet basil, because it owes me; wild magic basil, because, well, it’s magic; and Aristotle basil, because philosophically, this plant should do well. I admit I started with parsley plants that were a few inches tall, but I now have enough of this herb to fulfill the needs of several families. We have also been experimenting with flowers in large containers, and we find hibiscus bang for the buck. This plant’s blooms may last only a day, but as the summer goes on, we get massive numbers of the gorgeous flowers. Growing plants in easy-to-reach pots and a small raised garden is a breeze.
