I

t’s now officially spring, and if you live in York Region, you have a myriad of activities and events available to you! There are nine Municipalities in the Region, all featuring breathtaking scenery as buds burst open, and crocuses and tulips pop up. The Regional Municipality of York extends from the south shores of Lake Simcoe to Steeles Avenue in Toronto. Anyone seeking a new home will find great choices in small towns, rural areas, low-rise suburban communities, sleek condominiums in urban settings and high-quality retirement residences. Spring is a great time to shop. Did someone say shop? In York Region, you’ll have your choice of big-box stores, modern shopping centres, and even antique stores and quaint boutiques in historic surroundings.

Power-shoppers, think fabulous Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, Pacific Mall (North America’s largest indoor Chinese mall) in Markham, and the incomparable Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre, which is like a city unto itself. Throughout the year, you can enjoy outdoor and indoor art exhibitions; music, film and food festivals; heritage celebrations; antique and vintage car shows; sporting competitions;

and fall fairs. Canada’s Wonderland is always a treat for “kids” of all ages, and it opens on May 1. Culturally speaking, the Markham Theatre, Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts and other state-of-the-art facilities offer live theatre, music, dance and other performances. The Varley Art Gallery of Markham and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg both provide the quintessential Canadian art experience. York Region is also home to an impressive array of educational facilities, including the recently announced York University Markham Centre satellite
