COVER STORY

Barrie’s most artistic new community is now selling its Final Phase

T

he Gallery Condominiums Final Phase has been released for sale. This highly coveted community is in demand by many people. In less than six months from its grand opening to the public, phase 1 and 2 were already 75% sold out and the final phase is selling rapidly as well. The passion for this Pratt Homes project is substantial. The Gallery Condominiums is a limited edition collection and possesses all the right components to make it a desirable place to live for people of all ages. When you build an equation with all of the differentiators that make this site incredibly unique, you can see why the only answer is, buy now. The Gallery Condominiums is inspired by art culture. It is designed and developed with the principal of being a work of art. Located at 300 Essa Rd in the heart of Barrie, in a high traffic area, it makes perfect sense why this community should be so inspiring. The site will host a lifetime exhibit of Aylan Couchie’s art. She is a young female indigenous artist who has won the International Sculpture Centre’s 2015 Outstanding Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award. She was the winner of Pratt Homes’ art competition which will result in her art submission H.I.O Big Chiefs being installed 70 feet in the air on one of the condominium buildings looking over Barrie for all to see. This will make The Gallery Condominiums a focal point for residents of Barrie and visitors to our beautiful city. There will be pieces of Aylan’s art placed throughout the community. The Final Phase Release included floor plans and prices for The Louvre, a 108 unit building. The most exciting part of this building is the 11,000 square foot Roof Top Patio that will have communal sitting areas, bbq’s and of course Aylan Couchie’s art. This will be Barrie’s first residential roof top

patio and it will offer residents unparalleled vistas of Barrie. The final touch is 14 acres of forested public park right beside the community. It will have trails, benches, look outs and more to make this area a remarkable addition to living at The Gallery Condominiums. It’s rare to get such a beautiful area beside a condominium development. The Final Phase of The Gallery Condominiums is now selling. You should make one of their condominiums your personal work of art because one they’re gone, they’re gone forever. www.thegallerybarrie.com or visit their sales office at 241 Essa Rd in Barrie.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, CITY OF VAUGHAN!

Dorothea Helms Connects people and ideas, and can be reached at writer@wsws.ca

Twenty-five years ago, on January 1, 1991, the Vaughan was designated a City – the first City in York Region –and since that time, the municipality has experienced phenomenal growth. In fact, Vaughan is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada. Today, Vaughan has a population of over 320,000 (that number was 100,000 in 1991) and includes the communities of Concord, Kleinburg, Maple, Thornhill and Woodbridge. A microcosm of the demographics that enrich the Greater Toronto Area, the City of Vaughan is a multicultural community where 99 different languages are spoken. Vaughan is also home to more than 11,200 businesses and Outdoor opportunities abound in Maple’s Natural Reserve Trails thousands of organizations. This progressive City (Photo courtesy of the City of Vaughan) is a major contributor to the success of York Region Share your story! In celebration of this milestone in the City’s history, and the GTA.

Vaughan 25th Anniversary Events

Over the years, Vaughan has also undergone tremendous change. Current major city-building initiatives currently include the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension. In April, City of Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, Town of Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow and City of Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti met to discuss working together to move the Yonge Street subway extension forward. Watch for an information and action day to inform transit users along the Yonge corridor of the current status of the extension, and to encourage them to make their support heard at the federal and provincial levels of government. In January of this year, Vaughan joined the ranks of world-class cities, when it became the second in Canada to received an award from the World Council on City Data (WCCD). This ISO Platinum Award recognizes Vaughan’s high standards in collecting and using research as part of providing excellence to residents, helping to create a smart, sustainable, resilient and prosperous city. Among the other international cities that received this certification in 2015 were Barcelona, Melbourne, Shanghai, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles and Dubai.

residents and visitors are invited to share special memories, stories and photos of their Vaughan experiences, at http:// vaughan25.ca/our-stories/ – help to create a special and unique history of this amazing municipality. May 15 Local Author Showcase Vaughan Public Libraries, 900 Clark Avenue West, 1:30 to 4:00 P.M. In support of literacy and lifelong learning, in conjunction with Vaughan’s 25th Anniversary as a City and Canada Book Day 2016, Vaughan Public Libraries will hold this Local Author Showcase. Up to 12 authors will speak about their books in the library meeting rooms and will sell books in the main lobby. A representative from the Writers’ Community of York Region will also be on-site to offer publishing and marketing tips. For more information, contact Heather He Siewert at 905-832-8514 ext. 4134 or email heather.hesiewert@vaughan.ca. July 15-17 Vaughan Pizzafest Woodbridge Fairgrounds. Taste your way through signature pizzas and other delicious treats made by more than 15 restaurants and pizzerias at this inaugural event, which will also include a celebration of the City of Vaughan’s 25th Anniversary, as well as family-friendly entertainment. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefitting local causes and youth sports organizations.

Mayor Bevilacqua said, “Vaughan is leading the way in Canada and abroad as it reaches new heights in international recognition. My vision for Vaughan has always been clear – to build a city where people can live happy, healthy and fulfilling lives. As a member of the Global Happy Anniversary to Vaughan, which Cities Indicators Facility International Advisory Board – the organization that built this is celebrating 25 years as a City! first ISO Standard for cities – I championed the importance and value of being part of this global initiative because it provides Vaughan with the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from more than 250 cities worldwide. Achieving ISO platinum certification by the World Council on City Data demonstrates our commitment to building a world-class city as we are one of two cities representing Canada on a global scale.” The Village of Maple is centred around the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Keele Street. Many of the new home communities being built in the area are inspired by its original Victorian-style village. Both Vaughan’s City Hall and Canada’s Wonderland are located in Maple, which is known for its eager volunteer sector. A model of diversity, Maple is also home to one of the largest mosques in Canada. The Village of Kleinburg is known for being home to the renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection, which boasts works by the Group of Seven. Kleinburg also boasts the Kortright Centre for Conservation and is the location for the beloved annual Binder Twine Festival, where visitors enjoy great food, unique crafts, plus fun entertainment and activities. A trip to Kleinburg’s main street is a treat. Small one-of-a-kind boutiques, fine-dining restaurants, European-inspired cafés and luxury spas and more create the Village’s irresistible ambience. Situated atop the Humber River Ridge, the Village also offers hiking and cycling opportunities amid breathtaking views. Wherever your residential destination in Vaughan, you will find appealing new home communities with a variety of home styles from prestigious builders. Above all, you will enjoy an enviable quality of life. The charming Village of Maple is a popular residential destination (Photo courtesy of the City of Vaughan)

20-Minute Makeover Brings the Community Together to Clean Up the City

F

or more than a decade, the City of Vaughan has participated in 20-Minute Makeover – an annual environmental awareness program in support of Earth Day. More than 16,800 participants from 52 schools, 13 businesses, five community groups and 16 City of Vaughan departments took 20 minutes to collect litter in Vaughan during the event on Friday, April 22. It brings people together for a common cause to help make our communities greener and cleaner places. This initiative supports goals outlined in Green Directions Vaughan, the Community

Sustainability and Environmental Master Plan, including being leaders in advocacy and education on sustainability issues and significantly reducing the amount of waste the City generates. This year’s event was held in partnership with Pitch-In Canada, a national non-profit group dedicated to the preservation and sustainable growth of our natural ecosystems and communities. Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua participated in a kick-off event today in Ward 2 with students and staff from St. Andrews Catholic Elementary School. Vaughan Councillors also attended community cleanup events at

schools in their respective wards: St. David Catholic Elementary School (Ward 1), St. Emily Catholic Elementary School (Ward 3), St. Cecilia Catholic Elementary School (Ward 4) andWestminster Public School (Ward 5). For more information about 20-Minute Makeover and to learn about Vaughan’s environmental initiatives, visit vaughan.ca/environment or email environment@vaughan.ca.

Today it is a welcome source of funding that assists in the maintenance and revitalization of existing infrastructure, while also supporting new assets in emerging neighbourhoods. As a first step in their plan, the mayors called on the Province of Ontario to fund the approved Metrolinx recommendation to move forward to the next stage of development, preliminary design and engineering. “We have come together to make a strong case in favour of strategic transit investments in the GTHA to better serve citizens and promote economic growth and jobs,” stated Mayor Bevilac-

qua. “The Yonge Street Subway extension merits immediate consideration because the facts, figures and economic benefits provide sound and intelligent reasons for public investment. We are convinced that it will address key challenges which we collectively experience and, equally important, provide opportunities for smart growth.” Mayor Scarpitti addressed the issue of capacity. “While we are fully aware of the capacity issues on the Yonge Street subway line, we are also informed by the Metrolinx study published in June 2015 that infrastructure improvements and other transit projects will allow the Yonge Street extension to move forward at a strategic pace.” “This project is shovel ready and shovel worthy,” said Mayor Barrow. “It has been underway since 2008, has an approved environmental assessment and has undergone extensive public consultation. The route has been delineated as well as the stations.” As part of the plan developed between the three municipalities, an information and action day will be scheduled in May to inform transit users along the Yonge corridor of the current status of the Yonge Subway Extension and the need to make their voices heard at both the federal and provincial levels. Members of the Yonge North Group include, Councillor Valerie Burke, City of Markham, Councillor Godwin Chan, Town of Richmond Hill and Alan Shefman, City of Vaughan. All three councillors represent wards that are bounded by Yonge Street.
