2021 WINTER

1

In the spring of 2000, I entered the lavish office of the apparel designer that had been recommended to me by a friend. I came straight from the sawmill where my welding company TOBE Technology was installing new machinery. I probably smelled accordingly. At the time, I was wearing my regular greasy mechanics clothes, and I have to admit I felt somewhat out of place in the fancy Swedish design firm. The crazy idea to turn TOBE into a clothing company began two years earlier when I was employed at a small metal fabrication shop. I was able to talk my boss into letting me use the shop at night to work on a line of snowmobile accessories I was trying to develop. It never made me much money, but it paid for my riding and more importantly, it helped me build up enough confidence in myself to start a welding business of my own. Back in the design office, my new designer sent me home that day with sketches and the task of figuring out where to buy fabrics and manufacture what he had helped me sketch up. Turn out I was pretty handy with the Yellow Pages and soon after, we were in business! However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. I quickly came to the harsh realization that whatever money I had at the time wouldn’t be enough to get TOBE Outerwear up and running independently as I envisioned. So, I spent the next nine years juggling designer meetings, business trips to Asia and the everyday life of a mechanic to keep everything afloat. These were long, busy days but I wouldn’t trade them for anything. They were educational on so many levels. An older, wiser friend once told me that the only thing you should be thankful for is the opportunities that come your way, and what you choose to do with them. I tend to agree with him, except there’s one other thing for which I am extremely grateful: all the amazing people I’ve met across the world who have helped take this company to it’s 20th anniversary. For me personally, it has been a journey and a path through life that simply has been both incredible and unexpected for someone with my education and background. Looking back at it, that meeting with the designer really was one of the major crossroads in my life - I very easily could have turned around and scrapped the whole plan of starting an outerwear brand. Instead, it is now December 2019 and I’m writing for the catalog that will mark TOBE’s 20th anniversary. I have to admit that it feels pretty awesome. I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve done or excited for what we have planned for the next 20 years. Thank you to everyone who is or has been a part of getting us here!

HERITAGE

BORN IN THE BACKCOUNTRY. BUILT IN A BARN. TOBE was born in the backcountry of Northern Sweden at the intersection of motorsports and boardsports. From the very beginning in 2001, we have focused all our energy on creating styleforward, technical garments that excel at keeping the wearer warm, dry and safe. A few things have changed over the years, but most things haven’t. TOBE is still family-owned and operated out of the more than 100-year-old barn on the same property as Tomas’ childhood home. We continue to design and manufacture premium products because winter is our passion, and we intend to use them. We’re still a small team. You’re going to get a real person on the phone when you call us for help. We have always pushed the limits of innovation and style, and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Thanks for joining us on this journey. We look forward to introducing you to the next chapter. Welcome to 2021.

20 YEARS OF TOBE 2000 In the spring of 2000, we started work on our very first outerwear product, the Carver pants. They didn’t turn out like the Shift moto pants that we liked so much, but they were still awesome.

2010 Having had the strange experience of selling out of every Mono Suit we could manufacture, it was now more clear to us than ever that we were on to something special. We decided to make the Mono Suit a cornerstone of our product collection. It wasn’t long until other brands caught on. At the same time, we made the decision to reinvent ourselves and start working on a collection of products that would eventually be known as the TOBE 2.0 line. These new products were purpose-built for the fast growing backcountry snowmobile market. 2.0 products required a completely new design methodology and manufacturing process.

2001 In May 2001, we introduced our first full collection at the annual Swedish Snowmobile Expo. There were baggy pants made of waterproof denim hanging on homemade rebar mannequins. Our booth was a shipping container, and we blasted hip-hop on very large speakers. 2004 We made it over to the USA for the first time. We immediately fell in love with the jacked-up pickup trucks but realized snowmobilers in Idaho dressed nothing like the snowboard-inspired twenty-year-olds back home in Sweden.

2014 We introduced our first Sympatex® products. This collaboration gave us the ability to grow our collection considerably. It now included outerwear, boots, gloves and a wide range of other products designed for backcountry snowmobiling.

2005 We decided to introduce our very own snowmobile magazine, the Red Sherpa. It was beautiful, thick and glossy. It also took forever to make and cost a fortune. But, it inspired thousands of readers and added a little more awe and beauty to the snowmobile industry.

2015 Beautiful Colorado became our new home in North America when we opened up our first office outside of Sweden. 2020 With the help and support of our devoted, loyal and amazing Tribe, we proudly celebrate 20 years in the outdoor industry.

2008 This year changed everything. As a design- and social experiment, we introduced the first technical Mono Suit for snowmobiling. I imagine we would have laughed our asses off if we knew what we had just unleashed. 2010 Two seasons into the Mono Suit trend we started, we made a harsh realization that we had to grow up. We did away with the tribals, skulls and (most of the) booze-soaked parties. Life sucked, we stopped riding, traveling, filming and basically all of the fun stuff to focus on the business. By this point, we had a copywriter that removed all the best stuff from my writing. Long gone were the days of and references to Canadian and in basement in Revelstoke. Instead, our catalogs started to look like the one you’re reading now. I’m of course NOT being serious I just had a sudden ”I miss the good old days” moment.

BOOT INTRODUCTION

Our design philosophy for boots is very simple. Make boots that are comfortable from day one and protective, warm, dry and reliable for years to come.

No, they’re not very colorful, but we don’t think that matters much when they have a reputation for providing exceptional all-around performance on the mountain and the trail.

Our proprietary combination of high-quality natural rubber outsoles, a durable leather upper, the highest tensile strength BOA® system, and a refined fit have proven to be a winning formula.

8

DISTRIBUTION

Warm, dependable boots are the foundation for long days on snow. We know all too well that cold feet ruin otherwise perfect days. There’s no escaping the fact that once the feet get cold or wet, the day will inevitably be either long and less enjoyable, or cut short to head indoors in search of respite. We build our boots with the Sympatex® Moisture-Tech membrane, which guarantees superior warmth and waterproofing. The performance is proven both USA E-HANDEL in the lab, during a 14-hour partially-submerged walk test, and in the field. The low-profile toe box makes this boot uniquely suited for snowbikers, as shifting in the Cordus is second nature. The snowbike-compatible toe box is also heavily reinforced to protect the top of the foot from impacts.

TOBE´s waterproof gloves utilize the Sympatex membrane and have all the weatherproofing and performance benefits that come with this technology.

The world´s best leather comes from Pittards in England. The leather in TOBE´s Sympatex gloves uses Pittard´s Armor-tan technology, meaning the fibers in the leather are reinforced with microscopic ceramic plates. The result is leather that is up to 25% stronger than regular leather.

14

Have you ever stopped to appreciate the complexity and importance of your hands and fingers?

While designing our collection of gloves, we spent hours upon hours analyzing exactly how the hand moves. We did this to ensure all of our gloves maximize the utility and dexterity of your hands, while keeping them warm, dry and safe. While we make a wide range of gloves for every type of rider and riding condition, all of our gloves share the same technical features and design philosophy that makes them uniquely TOBE.

OUTERWEAR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

TOBE has never been a traditional outerwear brand. One could argue that it has been one of the pillars of our design philosophy to not be. Let us explain.

Fashion is next in the order of importance. We want you to look good, so you feel good. However, that doesn’t mean we’re above adding giant pieces of Kevlar® on top of everything we just designed if that’s the only way to exceed your expectations.

TOBE was conceived at a time and in a culture that embraced the spirit of a mix of winter outdoor sports. Skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding were all big influences because at the foundation of each of these sports is a deep-burning desire not found anywhere else. It’s the passion to explore uncharted terrain, get that next kick of adrenaline and simply take in the full extent of mother nature’s beauty.

There’s a constant tension between function and aesthetic design. Every time we sit down to create something new, we strive to find a delicate balance between raw functionality and making you the bestlooking thing on the mountain.

We claim the right to call ourselves a brand of many sports, with our roots stemming from every adrenaline-fueled activity we grew up enjoying. Growing up with people who shared the same mentality formed our design philosophy early on.

We come from every imaginable corner of the world. Our backgrounds and preferences for what we eat, what language we speak and how we choose to walk through life couldn’t be more different. Our common bond is our love for the outdoors. We’re your family. We’ve got your back no matter what. Everyone is welcome in our Tribe.

Our gear is meant to be (ab)used, and saving costs in our designs by jeopardizing reliability is not tolerated. First and foremost, our gear must be durable. Period.

WHY SYMPATEX ? OTHER MEMBRANE

Function Non-porous, 100% waterproof membrane. Breathes by pushing moisture at a molecular level (water molecules) through one-way capillaries from inside to out.

Function Porous membrane. Breathes by allowing water vapor (sweat) to seep through small holes in a partially waterproof membrane

Waterproof rating 45,000mm

Waterproof rating 28,000mm Waterproofing can be adversely affected over time due to use and wear.

Windproof rating 100% Windproof (0 liter/m²/second)

Windproof rating Wind is able to pass through at a rate of 2 liter/m²/ second

Breathability rating Dynamic breathability, which increases with physical exertion. Exceptional moisture management.

Breathability rating The breathability is constant due to the membrane being porous. It struggles to transport moisture when vapor (sweat) condensates to liquid on contact with the membrane.

Care Wash your gear as often as you like. The membrane will not be negatively impacted. In fact, washing your Sympatex® outerwear improves performance and extends the lifetime of the garment.

Care Wash with care, the microporous material will degrade with frequent washing.

DESIGNED AND TESTED

FOR THE RIDING YOU DREAM ABOUT

Everyone dreams of riding in unbelievable conditions with just a few close friends. It’s the experience of a lifetime.

When this dream is realized, and you’re exploring secluded zones deep in the backcountry, there is no substitute for having functional and reliable gear. You literally must trust it with your life to keep you warm, dry and safe.

Having a good idea on the design board is one thing. Having the best riders in the world put it to the test in the real world is something else entirely. Our Tribe is filled with talented riders, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the constant constructive feedback they’ve provided while spending thousands of hours in our gear over the years.

We take this very seriously, which is why we pay the utmost attention to every detail while designing each piece of outerwear in our collection.

ORIGIN OF THE MONO SUIT The world’s first technical, high performance mono suit may have been designed in Sweden, but inspiration was drawn from experiences riding all over the world.

Back in Sweden, samples were quickly developed and sent for production. When they arrived, they were... interesting. There really wasn’t much to compare them to at the time.

Tomas’ love for snowmobiling and his drive to see the world on his sled brought him to Revelstoke in the late 2000s. It took only an hour or two of riding before he quickly found out that the snow was much different than anything he had ever experienced back home in Sweden. Of course it was deeper, much deeper, but it was also wet and heavy.

It was decided the only logical thing to do was start testing them. A couple were kept for in-house testing and the rest were sent out to Tomas’ friends and team riders.

Riding was a dream, but this type of snow posed new challenges.

It turned out that a great idea on paper suddenly seemed questionable in practice. The first Mono Suit did its job, it kept the wearer warm and the snow out, but it was so different. Would anybody really wear one?

It stopped you in your tracks often, and frequent digging quickly took a toll. Not only did you have to worry about staying warm, but also avoiding overheating. And then there was the sheer amount of snow. Anytime you fell off, the snow was well above your waist, and more often than not, sneaking into that annoying gap between your jacket and pant.

A couple of the friends that received a prototype sure thought so. In fact, they loved the design and saw serious potential. They pushed hard to continue the project and refine the design.

Serious challenges indeed.

We’re glad they did.

Later that night at the bar, Tomas and his brother were discussing this problem with a few locals, when one of them suddenly interjected, “You make outerwear, right? Why don’t you make a one-piece...?”

We kept designing, testing and fine-tuning until we had a model ready for production. The “Exception” Mono Suit debuted just in time for the winter of 2008/09. Now, 13 generations later, we introduce you to our 2021 collection of Mono Suits.

That set the wheels in motion.

HOW DO I CHOOSE?

With the help of our Mono Suit guide, picking out the right Mono Suit is as easy as asking a few key questions.

We designed our 2021 Mono Suits so that every model offers the same level of waterproofing, windproofing and breathability, regardless of which mono suit you decide to wear. We achieved this by building he 45,000mm Sympatex® membrane into the entire collection. Instead of picking a Mono Suit based on the performance it offers, the guide helps you choose between the specific features each mono suit offers . Answer the questions below and then refer to the guide to see which suits have the features you require. Questions to ask. • What activity will it be used for? • Do I need leg zips? • Do I need insulation? • Do I want regular or athletic fit? • Do I want a removable hood? • Do I want ergonomic shoulder braces?

Questions you do NOT need to ask. • Will it keep me dry? • Will it keep me warm? • Does it have the 45,000mm Sympatex membrane? • Is it durable enough for snowmobiling? • Is it functional for use during any outdoor winter activity?

LAYERING Natural insulation and warmth Merino wool provides natural insulation that allows the body to retain heat and maintain higher comfort levels. The natural crimp of merino fiber enables it to keep heat close to the body by trapping tiny air pockets within the fibers. Comfort and breathability Merino wool is a moisture-wicking fiber. It draws moisture away from the skin, releases it into the air or the next layer of clothing. This helps to regulate body temperature, keeping the body warm in cold weather and cool if it is hot. It will absorb up to a third of its weight in water without feeling clammy and retains some of its warmth even when very wet. Odour free Merino wool is an anti-microbial material and, as a result, has natural resistance to odour. Due to this fact, Merino garments do not need to be washed as often as synthetics. In fact you may just hang it out for the night when smelly. Merino vs synthetic Synthetic fibers such as polypropylene & polyester have a much simpler structure than natural wool fibers. These petroleum based fabrics do not absorb or release moisture and cannot breathe due to the simpler construction of synthetic fibres. When knitted into fabric, they are limited to one-way moisture movement - simply no comparison to the superb insulation elements of merino wool. Merino vs traditional wool Compared to traditional wool, merino is a smoother and finer fiber, which gives it a vastly superior texture and handle compared to traditional coarse wools. The smooth silk-like feel ensures the wearer will enjoy an ’itch-free’ experience, even on sensitive skin.

PRIMUS MERINO BASE LAYER More than any other layer, the base layer helps regulate your body temperature by moving perspiration away from your skin. Trapped inside your clothing, perspiration can leave you chilled or damp no matter how well your shell layer fends off rain and snow.

Keeping dry is important for maintaining a cool body temperature in the summer and avoiding hypothermia in the winter. If you’ve ever worn a cotton T-shirt under your raincoat while hiking, you probably remember feeling wet and clammy, even though you weren’t getting wet from the rain itself. Cotton is an example of a fabric that retains perspiration and can leave you vulnerable to unwanted chills. For outdoor comfort, your base layer should be made of merino wool. Rather than absorbing moisture, these fabrics transport (or ”wick”) perspiration away from your skin, dispersing it on the outer surface where it can evaporate. The result: You stay drier even when you sweat, and your shirt dries faster afterwards.

OVIS MERINO MID LAYER The insulating layer helps you retain heat by trapping air close to your body. Polyester fleece vests, jackets and tights are classic examples of insulation ideal for outdoor activities. They not only trap air but are also made with moisture-wicking fibers to help keep you dry. Natural fibers such as wool and goose down are excellent insulators. Wool sweaters and shirts (especially the new generation of merino wool products) offer soft, reliable warmth and keep on insulating even when wet.

THE TINY HOUSE AKA THE STUGA Let me tell you the story of when we practically brought the operations of the company - in the beginning of high season, mind you - to a halt to build a cabin on wheels.

Me in this story is Tomas, the Swedish founder, who, at the time, had apparently distanced myself so far from daily operations that I really couldn’t see how this would be a problem..

We eventually decided our showroom on wheels needed to be a proper cargo trailer with a steel frame and heavy duty axles at its core. That way, our tiny home would be purpose-built to tow well and often.

Sometimes a crazy idea gets stuck in your head. Building a tiny house and hauling it around as a demo trailer was one of those ideas that sounded like so much fun that we kept joking about it. That is, until we realized we actually had to follow through with it.

We wanted the trailer finished in time for the first snow show of the season, so we came up with a plan and targeted a start date in the middle of August. The project was to be completed in just four weeks. Day 1 started early in the morning at my home airport in Sweden where I boarded a plane to the USA. It finished nearly 30 hours later during a picturesque Denver sunset. I had just cut the roof clean off what used to be the shiny new 36’ trailer that I had just picked up a few hours earlier in Colorado Springs. What a start that was. Pretty much every day that followed was like this to some degree.

I say, ”we” because I would like to think that the rest of my team was also a little excited, at least before we built it and then again when we finished it. Although, it’s not impossible that I made this up after the fact to justify the time, blood, sweat and tears that I forced everyone into sharing with me to make this dream a reality. Personally, I had the time of my life and loved every second I was away from my desk.

Working on such a short timeline, I couldn’t escape the feeling that I was on one of those annoying and dramatic home renovation TV shows. Another reason for this was because we didn’t take any shortcuts, even though there were many times that we could have. For example, we wanted the roof to look like a real cabin’s, which forced us to fabricate a completely new steel frame and weld it into the now roof-less trailer. Another one was the decision to use actual wood boards as siding. This was time consuming to say the least.

When we finally decided to go for it, there were tons of tiny house projects online to use as inspiration. We looked at everything from giant two-story houses on wheels to incredibly smart and well-planned trailers that contain your whole life in just a few sq ft. The problem was most of them were built out of plywood and 2-by4’s. They were not meant to be towed around to the extent were planning.

70

And then there were the daily afternoon storms. Completing this project outside meant we were at the mercy of Mother Nature. To be fair, most of the time, the weather cooperated and we had no issues. However, just about every day from 4:00-5:00PM, like clockwork, the sun suddenly disappear behind dark storm clouds and the sky gave way to storms of biblical proportions. Thinking back to it now, I can laugh. We must have looked hilarious rushing around trying to get everything inside so it wouldn’t either blow away or get absolutely soaked. At the time, I remember feeling lied to by the Denver crew and their BS “300 days of sunshine” line.

We won’t ever be able to thank Jeremy properly, and we can’t recommend his services enough. If you ever need your roof repaired or just a friendly face to bring you tons of donuts anywhere in the Greater Denver area, he is your guy, that’s for sure.

Well, as you’ve probably guessed, after a couple weeks of hard work (directly) outside of our office, we were finally finished. We completed the build in time and we were extremely proud of the final product. At last we had ourselves a proper showroom on wheels with the cabin feel we were going for! It wasn’t easy, but the truth is the build went quite smoothly all things considered. Most of the hardship stories are about the long, tiring hours we spent working dawn to well past dusk for four weeks straight. Oh, and “insulation day.” If you didn’t wear sleeves and jeans, that day wasn’t great.

Since then, we have towed The Stuga all across the western United States and all the way up to Edmonton, Canada. When we are not attending trade shows or visiting dealers, you’ll likely find us parked at your local trail head. Don’t be shy, come on in and see us. Borrow some gear for the day and, when you get back in the afternoon, we’ll have a cold beer or fresh coffee waiting for you.

To celebrate the completion of the build and showoff what we’d been working on the last four weeks, we decided to host a party. This party also doubled as naming ceremony - every legendary building, vehicle and vessel has a name, so of course, ours needed one as well. It was here that we dubbed our new prized asset, “The Stuga.”

The rest of the stories are about the almost unbelievable progress we made each day, and the amazing people that helped us out along the way. In fact, there is one major reason that this project was so easy (relatively speaking of course). Jeremy Smith, the owner of local a contracting company called Dark Sky, decided to show up one day towards the beginning of the project and stay all the way to the end. In addition to his time, knowledge and skills, Jeremy made all of his tools and most of his crew available to us.
