Festas Felizes

[Fellow Toastmaster, for each year that ends, a new one begins, with new perspectives, hopes and illusions. In a time we sail through uncertain waters, and face increased professional, financial and social challenges, it’s legitimate that we have great expectations in the new cycle arriving. We really have strong reasons for that. That’s because, at some point in our lives, we found out a Toastmasters club, where we had the opportunity to experience an exclusive environment of support and learning, that allowed us to begin a path of communication and leadership skills development. What we always intuitively have known, has been established by several scientific studies: communication and presentation skills are fundamental to personal and professional success. And besides all this, we also ensure powerful side effects, like increased self-esteem, thrust and friends. I’m sure that many others would like to have those benefits, and they just don’t do it because they don’t know about Toastmasters existence, or because they don’t have a club near by. This is where we come in. As you know, this year we want to take Toastmasters to all regions of the country, raise to double the number of members and consistently implement communications and leadership programs to children. They are our future. In the first six months of the year, thanks to a strong, focused and committed team, we kept a vibrant activity, and we assured a progress behind our best expectations. This enterprise, as any other, demands planning, commitment, action and team work. And the team are all of us. There is lots of space for you to contribute to this cause. I invite you once more, if you have not done so, to join us, in service to Toastmasters and to the Country. In the next January 25th the Toastmasters Leadership Institute will take place at Casino da Figueira da Foz. I hope to see you there. Register yourself here: INSCRIÇÃO NO TLI-Fig Foz25Jan2014. Ghandi said “Be the change you want to see in the world”. I strongly believe that, as Toastmasters, we are a piece of what the world needs. We know that the change starts on us. We don’t defend ourselves and we learn with criticism. We train to reach excelency. We focus ourselves in the other, in his well being and in his development. It’s my conviction that, the more we are, the better will be our society and our Country. We will rest only when all portuguese people had access, or at least, know about the Toastmasters Educational Program. Meanwhile, it’s time to stop, think and celebrate. I wish you a Merry Christmas, and a new year full of health, harmony, love, prosperity and... Speeches.

[The work of a club with his members starts in the moment they officially become a member, and they should be involved into all club aspects. This includes promoting their relationships with other members, knowledge about the educational program and the Toastmasters organization, and ensure commitment on the meeting and other extra meeting activities. Toastmasters called to this initial procedure the Membership Orientation.

Membership Orientation (from Moments Of Truth, Successful Club Series manual - item 269): • Induct new members formally and provide a membership pin and manuals. • Assign a mentor for one-on-one assistance.

• Discuss how the educational program helps develop speaking and leadership skills. • Survey all new members’ learning needs. • Assign a speaking role for the new member as soon as possible.

• Continue to make new members feel welcome and encourage their participation in meetings

One last note about assign leadership and speaker roles to a new member: the experience tell us that it shouldn’t take too long to a member start doing this roles, otherwise, he might be uninterested. Did you know that some clubs set a priority to schedule Ice Breakers, in order to promote the fast engagement of his new members?

[There are many ways that can be used to publicize Toastmasters. The manual "Let the World Know", available at www.toastmasters.org/let_world_know presents us with a number of them but the most used by all members, and that is quite effective, is spreading the word, where we are to give testimony in the first person about the benefits we felt from being a Toastmaster. This testimony may be in person, in a conversation between friends, but we have at our disposal another useful tool: social networks. To post our testimony on the social networks, we need not to write a new post specifically for this purpose. We can simply share a post or an image that has been published in our club page and, by sharing in our wall, we can comment something like: " I signed up x months ago and these are exactly the benefits I felt." or " I am already a member and would highly recommend." [We have many and good news about the Toastmasters in Schools Program. 1st - The people involved Nationally, more people are involved in this project. We have Rui Henriques with Ana Isabel Ferreira up North , Alexandra Nunes in the Center and Áurea Sequeira with Sofia Leitão in the South. Together we discussed the goals for this year and little by little we are exploring the best possibilities to reach out for schools. 2nd - The partnership with Junior Achievement Portugal At the Fall Conference in Aveiro, Joana Dias presented JAP’s Programs, and right there we thought we could easily collaborate. And we were right! We sat with her and concluded that there are at least two projects with which we may start: Speechcraft and the Youth Leadership Program. At TLI, in Figueira da Foz, we will present more details of this partnership which will be extend nationally. 3rd - The projects - Youth Leadership Program We started at Fonte Velha School in Sintra. Sofia Leitão, who already collaborated professionally with this school, will move forward with an YLP for 4th grade children. It will be an interesting challenge, because these students already worked their communication skills in their Class Councils. Also, in Leiria, Alexandra is working with a school to implement the YLP with a group of 4th graders . The early bird catches the worm ... ! In Oporto, we will start with a group of 8th graders at Escola Secundária Fontes Pereira de Melo, in January. We have paid them a visit and brought our magazine. Look at them (in the photo)! What a great group!

Another quite interesting way to publicize the Toastmasters brand is through communication workshops or more structured programs, such as the Youth Leadership Program and Speechcraft, mentioned in the previous article. This type of action is being developed all over the country: in a previous edition we met the Mini-Toastmasters from the Almada club, about one month ago we trained a group of entrepreneurs in the EDP Starter program (Marco Meireles and João de Mendonça in Lisbon, and Luís Marrana and Sara Magalhães in Oporto) through the Speechcraft program, and many communication workshops have already been presented by Toastmasters members in support of NGOs: the Beta-Start (from Beta-i), the Association Acredita Portugal, the Talentos em Livre Trânsito (from SAPANA)... It is time to announce these actions as a “service” of Toastmasters PORTUGAL to the public, giving more visibility to our social aspect and sharing with others the benefits that we have felt ourselves. DEZEMBRO 2013

[The Toastmaster’s (TM) history goes back to 1924, in the USA, where the first club was found. But in Portugal, the history began in a different way, and the first years were decisive to the shaping and independence inside the organization. Lots of things in life happen just by chance, or as some people say, it’s destiny. Portugal would meet the Toastmasters concept for the first time through a Dutch club in 2005, when Henrique Abreu recognized his company colleague, Luis Borges, as an extraordinary speaker comparing to what he used to be when they worked together in Lisbon. In spite of being a business meeting in the company, the results of the Toastmasters program were clearly visible! On December 2005, the demo session takes place in Lisbon, through a Toastmaster from Spain, Mike Monroy, an American living in Rota, Cadiz, Spain. That support was only possible at that time because when the District 59 (Continental Europe) was founded, Portugal was administratively included in the group of countries that made part of this District. Otherwise, the story would be completely different, with the requirement of having already 4 clubs before have the possibility to be part of the District. Still in December, the meetings started, in an attempt to raise 20 members and start the first club in Portugal. In this period of time, the roles of treasurer and sergeant-at-arms, were very important, because they assured that all sessions were well organized, prepared and had more guests. I remember I told to the other 3 members of that time: “I will join the club, but I want the lowest role in the hierarchy”. I didn’t knew it was the most decisive role in the club creation! In the end of April, the last 2 guests became members, Francisco Baldinho e Fernando Santos, allowing us to fulfil the requirements to the official charter of the club, which happened on May 5th 2006. Henrique Abreu was no longer a participant in the meetings, for professional reasons, but in appreciation, we made him President of the Club. In that same month, the number 21 member, Luis Caetano appears. In the Summer of 2006. arose a contact from the North of the country, asking for information about how to create a club It was Francisco Saraiva, that with other people (like Alexandra Morão, Alexandra Lemos, etc), organised a demo session, where the members of Lisbon’s club assumed the speeches and the roles of the meeting, after travelling from Lisbon to Oporto. The session took place in October and it was a success, with around 80 people. In the next month, Oporto Toastmasters Club was born.

[In September 2007, the Area Governor, Barbara Hofmeister, came to Lisbon. We got to know the organization better, and knew about the existence of a contest. In that same Fall, we organized a contest in Oporto, where Francisco Saraiva and

Luis Caetano were the winners of Humorous and Impromptus speeches, respectively. In October 2007, in Marbella, we had the first representation out of Portugal. Francisco won, and became the first Portuguese to go to a District Contest, in this case was at Wien. In April 2008, it happened the first international contest. I won the Area and Division (in Madrid) contests, and I’m the winner who goes to Prague representing the Iberian Peninsula at the District contest. In May 2008, the first Portuguese Area Governor , João de Mendonça, was named, and the Lisbon TM Club was the best club of the District. In the next year, 2009, the Braga Toastmasters and the Mind

Business clubs were born, and their main intervenient were Hermenegildo Campos, Alexandra Lemos and José Apolónia. In April 2009, the Division H, Spain and Portugal, was organized in Lisbon. The Conference Chair was João de Mendonça, and he made something different: he asked, for the first time, a World Champion to come to Europe, more precisely to Lisbon. Lance Miller, World Champion of 2005, and Bill Monsour, European Champion of 2005, accepted. The conference was a success, 106 people participated. Never before we saw so many people in an Iberian Division conference! With this event, Portugal wins the international reputation of being a team of enthusiastic and entrepreneurs. The name “Dynamic Team” arises every time someone talks about the Portuguese team.

[The next Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) will take place on the next January 25th, in the Casino da Figueira da Foz. This is one of the two mandatory moments of annual training for Club Officers, and has a direct leverage on the Distinguished Club Program (DCP) of each Club. The agenda is being prepared, and will be available before the end of the year. It’s a fundamental day for officers to gain expertise and the right tools to assure their clubs’ success. Beyond the specific training sessions, we also will have workshops of communication and leadership. Due its training value, the TLI is open (and recommended) to all members, so you are very welcome. It also will be an excellent opportunity to meet and get together with Toastmasters from all country.

This event is free, and you only need to pay for the meeting lunch, if you want to. The value will be less than € 20,00. The main room has 300 places. We appreciate your registration, as soon as possible, in the link below, so we can evaluate the need of bigger room. INSCRIÇÃO NO TLI-Fig Foz-25Jan2014 Register yourself! It will make a difference! If you need more information, be in touch with your Club Officers, your Area Governor or with the Division Education Coordinator, Daniel Sequeira (danieltm@outlook.com).

Catarina Rodrigues [It was on November 12th that the Lisbon Toastmasters club had the opportunity to receive Nelson Emílio, who talked us about “The Power of My Brand”. An exceptional presentation, as Nelson already accustomed us, this time with indispensable tips that can improve life for all of us. The audience was certainly richer, and also was the club, because new members joined. This kind of initiatives are always welcomed.

“Make the entrepreneur an effective communicator II” – this event, organized by the Business Speakers Toastmasters Club, happened with the Global Entrepreneurship Week, and its goal was stimulate and improve the ‘pitching’ ability of the entrepreneur. It had some experienced Toastmasters, who evaluated 8 presentations, 3 of them from entrepreneurs finalists of the Global Building Innovators Program (http://mitportugal-iei.org), that took place in ISCTE-IUL. The feed-back from the enterpreneurs was very good, and we expect to have a new session during this Toastmaster year. If you want to know more, or apply yoourself, please contact efficient.communication@gmail.com. The first anniversary of a Toastmasters club is always an achievement worth celebrating with its members, and that is exactly what happened in Lisboa Oriente Toastmasters. On November 20th, LOT's first anniversary was celebrated with a special session at the restaurant Floresta de Moscavide, with a menu that rose to the occasion. Members and guests were received with an entrée of greetings and welcomes. As appetizers there were served highlights of the club's achievements (including an astrological chart) and all due appreciation to each club member. The main courses were three: an Ice Breaker, an Inspire Your Audience and an advanced speech from the “Speciallity Speeches” handbook. For dessert, everyone shared the stories and challenges that lead to the birth of this club. All of this coupled with good food and the indispensable toasts. At the end of the session, the candles were blown out and toasts were made with another advanced speech from the “Special Occasion Speeches” handbook. On the way home, everyone took with them the secret recipe for a successful club: that the success of a club is a direct reflexion of the individual successes of each of its members.

[In the last month, there were very great news in Area L3. The spotlight goes to the opening of two more new Toastmasters clubs, to several outdoor sessions, and the confirmation of the next TLI – Toastmaster Leadership Institute – in Figueira da Foz. Outdoor sessions: in order to spread the Toastmasters message and the concepts of efficient communication and leadership, the CLUTA (Aveiro’s club), had a session in the Aveiro’s Bertrand Bookstore, and in the end of this event, they got two new members to the club. The same happened with the Coimbra Toastmasters Club, in the end of the session they had in Coimbra’s Cowork. In this two outdoor sessions, the interaction with the public was notorious, with people interested in knowing the club better, through several questions asked and doubts clarification, and of course, with some people joining Toastmasters. The outdoor sessions allow members to go out of their comfort zone in the place where sessions usually happen, and grow even more in their communication and leadership skills. Two other subjects are now taking place in Area L3: two new clubs are emerging, and they are the Viseu Toastmasters Club and the Scalabis Toastmasters Club (club of Santarém). The last has its inauguration scheduled to the next January 18th, and and the other had its demonstration session in the past November 30th, We wellcome the two clubs, and we are sure they will enrich even more the Area L3. To prove this Area dinamics, the Coimbra Toastmasters Club will have a session in Coimbra’s ISCA, in order to promote the creation of a second club in the city. If it goes through, “it will be an historic moment”, according to Acácio Grilo, Area L3 Governor, once it “will be the first time a city with less than 100 thousand inhabitants has two clubs”. The next TLI – Toastmasters Leadership Institute – will take place in Figueira da Foz. The TLI is one of the two annual mandatory trainings for officers. Besides the plenary session,

In a society increasingly multilingual, where it is essential to develop the practice of English, and with our increasingly multicultural country, where borders are just the language, the Young Entrepreneurs Toastmasters Club had the excellent initiative to create a good training tool for Toastmasters: an English session. Let’s make a difference in a child’s life! On the 4th of December, the Mindbusiness Toastmasters had a session with the coaching international certification class. [On November 30th, the Ignite Portugal was in Beja in an open event, were all people could watch an interesting set of speakers. The Beja Toastmasters Club participated through some members involved, and was a partner of this event. Our President Fernanda Pereira made a presentation, with the goal of spreading the concept of Toastmasters, and she got the attention of several people in the audience, who became interested. Rui Isidoro made a presentation called “If you want, you can”, where he gave his life example, showing that, if we have a strong will, we can reach our goals. We also had our members Carlos Monteiro and Fábio Jesuíno as part of the event’s organizing team, with several tasks, and Célia Palma supporting the event organization. The event took place in a unique and full of soul place, the Galeria do Desassossego, in Beja historic center. The Algarve Toastmasters Club had a special session to support the Fundação António Aleixo. It costs so little to help those in need… This was the theme to make our Christmas session have even more significance, helping others. We decided to support the Fundação António Aleixo campaign, collecting cloth and shoes, and we invited a member to present us the Foundation and its work. Marilita Santos, Social Educator of the Foundation, readily accepted the challenge of presenting the Fundação António Aleixo, a private foundation of social support, that depends on the availability and help from others, in particular from the society. The anxiety was replaced with the passion of a person that works in the battle field, presenting all the services available in the foundation, from scholarships for poor students, to home support to those in need. The foundation also has a food bank, cultural activities and created an art school. We got to know so much more about this institution and how we can continue to help and support them. It was a session of Joy, Share, and we learned that feed-back is an act of Love!...
