CLEARED: LONDON RIOTS ‘MUGGERS’ Two men jailed for robbing a Malaysian student in one of the defining images of the London riots won an appeal to have their convictions quashed. John Kassongs Kafunda, 23, of Ilford, and Reece Donovan, 25, of Romford, were found guilty of robbing 21-year-old Ashraf Rossli as he walked through Barking. The robbery was filmed and caused outrage when posted on YouTube. The men were jailed, but on Thursday the country’s top judge overturned the verdict following a private hearing. Kafunda and Donovan claimed they were not in the video clip.

CASH-MACHINE FRAUD ON THE RISE The number of people falling victim to ATM scams has soared, figures show. “Cash claws” – where a device is used to trap money inside the machine – have increased from 150 in the UK in May to 2500 in London alone in August. Graham Mott, of Link, in charge of the UK’s ATM network, said the scam was rife across Europe. He added customers should report undelivered banknotes immediately.

Squatters take over pub

‘We’ll stay until we’re taken to court’ say group of 10 in Black Bull Squatters have taken over another Chelsea pub – just weeks after the practice was made illegal in residental properties. A group of 10 are inside the now-closed Black Bull, in Fulham Road, getting in via an open window in the women’s toilets. The squatters have said they are cooperating with the landlord, even showing potential new leaseholders around. However, the police have been called in after the leaseholder claimed there has been aggressive behaviour and alleged that the squatters had been stealing. Officers attempted to enter on Thursday to remove the squatters. David Ameri, 26, told the Standard: “We said to the leaseholder that we would

leave after a few days as soon as we found another place, but then he called the police on us. We were being reasonable. Now he has cheated us. Now we will stay until he takes us to court.” The leaseholder argued: “They are not friendly hard done-by hippies, they have been aggressive to both me and my daughter. They have stolen stock and illegally re-connected the electricity. They say they are only living in the commercial part of the property, not the flat upstairs, but we have seen them in there.” It comes weeks after squatters took over the Cross Keys in Chelsea. A law change on September 1 meant that although squatters can no longer occupy residential properties, they can use commercial ones.

It’s been a long time coming, but it looks as though West Ham United will be named the preferred bidder to take up residency of Stratford’s Olympic Stadium this week – that is, if they can find enough cash. The club are up against Leyton Orient, a football business college and a group keen to bring Formula One to the park. But the London Legacy Development Corporation is meeting on December 5, with the Daily Mail reporting WHU is on the brink of being named the primary tenants. It all comes down to negotiations over a £20m-£40m funding gap – a compromise is expected to be reached between London Mayor Boris Johnson, the club and central government to bring the stadium saga to a close. Let’s wait and see...
