BAR THE SCENE Tucked away on a side street behind Oxford Circus stands this stylish bar and restaurant. The ground floor is decked out with wooden tables and benches, while the basement houses spacious seating booths and dancefloor – perfect for a group of mates. DJs perform every night of the week, playing anything from reggae, garage, disco and everything in between. The crowd here is a rare mixture of both students and young professionals, but they’re all up for a good time. THE GRUB There is a full lunch menu including soups, sandwiches, salads and gastropub classics such as a six-ounce burger and fish and chips, providing the perfect pit stop. The late-night kitchen serves a tapas-style menu starring crispy squid with apricot and chilli jam, and baby Cumberland sausages glazed in maple syrup – yum! BEHIND THE BAR The Market Place Punch at £24.95 per pitcher is especially impressive if you’re willing to share it with friends. The wine selection also comes in at fairly reasonable prices. Choose from a small range of worldwide beers and ciders, including New Zealand’s Steinlager Pure. BILL PLEASE Lunch menu from £5.50; tapas plates from £4.50; cocktails from £6.95; beers from £3.70 a bottle and £4.30 a pint; wines from £3.95; spirits from £3.80. VERDICT If you fancy a night out in central London minus the eye-watering bar tab and with a non-pretentious crowd, then this is the place to be day or night. RRB

3 OF THE BEST PUBS WITH FIRES

Oxford Circus

THE EARL SPENCER

THE PALMERSTON

THE ROSE PUB

This traditional gastro pub brings a slice of the country to Southfields. Expect top-notch pub grub from a seasonal menu that changes daily. Then sit back with a pint in front of the roaring wood or coal fire and relax.

Once a spit-and-sawdust boozer, this acclaimed East Dulwich bar and dining room is a hit with locals. Choose a wine from the extensive menu (or get the staff to help) and curl up in front of the hearth.

Grab some mates and head to this Fulham pub for a hearty Sunday lunch. Then, with a drink and a paper (or laptop if you must with the free wifi), get comfortable in front of the huge wood fire on the squishy armchairs.
