Priceless: uncrowded slopes

BEST FOR BUDGET: For the cheapest skiing and snowboarding holidays, head to Eastern Europe. Be quick, though, before these well-kept secrets are discovered by the masses. Bansko, in Bulgaria, is nestled on the Glazane river and is the country’s number one ski resort, boasting the best record and the longest season, which runs roughly from December to May. It might not be cheap for much longer, with massive investment in new resorts and luxury hotels. The town of Bansko has a rich history but there’s also a nightclub scene that kicks on until the early hours. Make sure you sample some tasty Bulgarian vino. Borovets, the oldest resort in Bulgaria, boasts pistes of varying length and difficulty in three different areas, while also accommodating night-skiers, cross-country skiers and biathlon. Borovets is also renowned for its après-ski party atmosphere, with nightclubs such as Mamacitas

tntmagazine.com/destinations

“ Be quick before these well-kept skiing and snowboarding secrets are discovered by the masses ” and Bonkers well-frequented by foreign tourists. You can also check out the famous Rila Monastery, while the capital city of Sofia is nearby for shopping and sightseeing. Over in Poland, the town of Szklarska Poreba, in the Karkonosze Mountains, is unique in that it boasts ideal conditions for skiing and boarding, but is also prone to long, sunny days. Each year, the region has 156 days of permanent snow, highlighted by the annual Bieg Piastow competition. The area is home to the town of Karpacz, which offers a stack of non-skiing attractions, such as climbing, bungee jumping, tennis, paintball and fishing. Zakopane, in the Tatra Mountains, which constitute the highest part of the Carpathian mountain range, is the most notable Polish resort. Regarded as Poland’s ‘winter capital’, Zakopane

Eastern Europe offers great deals

If you want the best conditions, identify the snow-sure resorts

There’s plenty of great snow resorts, whatever your budget

boasts resorts that have operated for more than 100 years and now offer access to more than 50 world-class lifts. The slopes of Kasprowy Wierch, Kocio Goryczkowy and Gubawka accommodate skiers of various ability and the city itself also has its own buzz, combining local Polish traditions with the appeal of a western touristfriendly city.

If you don’t want to splash the cash,

pretty much guarantee good snow coverage. Among the highest are Tignes, Val Thorens, Les Deux Alps and Paradiski in France, and Verbier and Zermatt in Switzerland. For boarders and skiers who like to burn the candle at both ends, Verbier is hard to beat. And, if you think you’ve skied or boarded it all, try the mothership of hardcore downhill and off-piste: Chamonix,

“ Think uncrowded slopes in gorgeous, unsullied wilderness ” hotels. There are literally hundreds of resorts in the Alps (across France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria) that range from backyard affairs with a couple of lifts to behemoths that link several different resorts and towns into giant ski areas. If you want the best conditions possible, consider the snow-sure resorts, which are high enough to

which has top après-ski to boot. France’s Val Cenis, nestled in the Haute-Maurienne mountains is particularly good value and is not swamped by Brits like many other French resorts. Thanks to the northern exposure of its ski area, there is good quality snow from very early season, as well as pine forests and glaciers to keep skiers and snowboarders happy.

BEST FOR MID-RANGE

but you don’t want to slum it either, head to western Europe. The Alps boasts the highest mountains and the best (and most expensive) skiing and boarding opportunities but if you avoid the likes of upmarket Val d’Isere and chic Courchevel, you can still find yourself some mid-range deals. Save cash by flying with a no-frills carrier, staying in a self-catering apartment with mates and by shunning big-name

There’s plenty of budget accommodation to choose from and non-ski activities include husky sledding, snowshoe walking and horse-riding. BEST FOR SPLURGING: If you’ve got a bit of cash tucked away, your options are wide open. Canada’s Whistler Blackcomb, just north of Vancouver, is one of the world’s most famous ski resorts, having hosted the 2010 winter Olympics. There’s 3200ha of terrain across two mountains and, aside from the skiing and snowboarding, you can also get involved in dog-sledding and snowmobiling. Whistler’s commitment to snowboarding seems to increase each year, with a new terrain park

The French Alps offer great opportunities for powder

opening this season, with an Olympicsized superpipe ready to ride. Banff, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, is another of Canadian bestknown ski resorts. With 9m of snow dumped annually, the locals will tell you that Banff boasts Canada’s best snow; certainly, the scenery is spectacular – expansive mountain terrain and uncrowded slopes in gorgeous, unsullied wilderness. Across three different mountains, there are 12 different lifts, including eight super-lifts. Japan’s Niseko resort encompasses three separate but interlinked areas in Grand Hirafu, Higashiyama and Annupuri Kokusai, and has become a

wildly popular destination for Aussies and Kiwis during the southern hemisphere summer. On the northern island of Hokkaido, about 100km west of Sapporo, Niseko offers 57 runs, a combination of beginner and advanced. Hakuba, in the soaring Japanese Alps, is part of the Nagano region, which was home to the 1998 Winter Olympics. The sprawling valley includes more than 200 runs and 139 lifts along with a vibrant après-ski nightlife. The main areas in Hakuba are Happo-one – the region’s oldest ski resort, which boasts international-class skiing courses as well as shops and restaurants – and Hakuba Sanosaka, which is an ideal spot for views of Lake Aoki.

Immerse yourself in the elegance of Hamburg

Snuggle up in cellar bars and cosy restaurants in one of these gorgeous European cities WORDS REBECCA KENT HAMBURG

Abandoned with the advent of free trade, they were snapped up by the restaurants which now provide ambient escapes from the dark wintry nights. Try Safran Zunft, an old saffron guild hall with Swiss and South African cuisine, or the Zum Schlüssel, which was first mentioned in official documents in 1306. Time your visit with the Vogel Gryff or Festival of the Griffin in January, when the mythical beast is honoured with a town parade linked to the three guilds responsible for manning the city walls of Kleinbasel (smaller Basel) in the 14th century.

In the thick of winter at the heart of Germany’s biggest port town, Hamburg’s beautiful lake Binnenalster, or inner Alster lake, freezes over to become an ice-skater’s playground. Take in views of elegant, hanseatic buildings and absorb the city’s dynamic, multicultural ambience. Finish up with a gluhwein and bratwurst from the surrounding stands, or skip on over to St Pauli or Schanzenviertel for the best kebabs you may ever eat.

KRAKOW Beneath the cobblestones and rows of gothic and renaissance buildings, there exists a shadowy world of legends and fantasy, vodka and beer. Krakow’s subterranean network of wine bars, galleries, restaurants and music clubs come to life in converted cellars. You won’t even care what’s going on in the outside world.

‘If you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel’

COVER YOUR ASS

Travel insurance may seem unnecessary, but you’ll be glad of it if something goes wrong WORDS JAHN VANNISSELROY t’s the stuff of nightmares. What was meant to be your fun-filled jaunt to the slopes has disintegrated into a prolonged stay in a foreign hospital. If that’s not bad enough, you’re being charged thousands of pounds for the privilege. At the end of the day it’s your decision whether or not to buy travel insurance but make sure you’re aware of the risks before you leave.

I

MONEY TALKS

tntmagazine.com/destinations

TNT Images

Be aware of the risks before you leave

David Deverson, managing director of travel insurance company Globelink, says a winter sports insurance policy, while crucial, shouldn’t be too pricey. “If you think of the cost of a skiing holiday, with gear rental, accomodation flights etc, could be around £500, then [the average inurance cost of £30] is quite an insignificant amount,” he says.

Essential Travel’s Stuart Bensusan says skiers and boarders must ensure that they buy the right policy. “It is imperative that ‘winter sports’ (or equivalent term) is attached to your policy. Failure to do this could mean that you are not covered for certain winter activities,” Bensusan adds. “You should also check that the cover level you select matches the value of your holiday. It’s no good buying a policy that covers you for the cancellation of a holiday up to the value of £2,000 when the trip has cost you £4000.“ Deverson says a good strong policy – an annual multi-trip for Europe or worldwide – should cover everything from cancellation, bags, passport, theft, and medical fees into the millions of pounds. And he has some sage advice for those travellers heading to the slopes this winter: “If you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.”

Insurance will give you peace of mind

Be aware that accidents are more likely to happen after a night of alcohol or drugs. Excessive consumption before or during skiing and snowboarding not only puts you and those around you at risk of serious injury. In some resorts it can also lead to the confiscation of your lift pass. Injuries sustained under the influence of drink or drugs might be considered by your travel insurer as being “self-inflicted” and they may decline to pay for any resulting claim. “We hear of a lot of people getting injured due to them drinking while skiing … because they can’t up straight on the slopes,” Deverson says. “Just enjoy the après ski.”

A helicopter rescue could prove pricey

20

“ Injuries while intoxicated may be categorised as ‘self-inflicted’ ” PROTECT YOUR EQUIPMENT Your travel insurance policy is also important in terms of protecting your gear. Theft on the slopes is an ever-increasing problem, as many skiers do not take simple precautions when dropping by a bar or restaurant. Many policies will not pay out if your equipment has been left ‘unattended’ so make absolutely sure what your policy defines ‘unattended’ as. If your gear is stolen, report it to the police immediately, as some insurers will refuse your claim otherwise. One idea is to swap a ski with one of your mates when you stop off – ie, trade your left one with your friend’s left one – as thieves are less likely to want to steal an odd pair of skis. Lastly, if your gear is badly damaged while skiing and you want to make a claim, make sure you bring the skis home – insurers may not pay out if you leave them abroad. It may also pay to get a letter from the resort or your instructor confirming the damage took place on the slopes, and not before you arrived.

ROLLING THE DICE? IT MAY COST YOU Some typical costs for those without adequate winter travel insurance Treatment of a broken leg in a European hospital: £5000 - £8000 Treatment of a broken leg in the US or Canada: £25,000 Helicopter rescue: £250 - £600 Air ambulance – Austria to UK £12,000 - £16,000 A week’s hospital stay in Italy £4000 - £6000 Source: globelink

ew York is charismatic all year round but winter gives the city an added sparkle. Avoid the cold in a cosy neighbourhood bar or brave it as you skate in iconic Central Park. Here’s why winter in New York is great.

N

ENTERTAIN ME! If you haven’t yet seen a Broadway show then the plus-side of visiting off-season is that you should be able to snap up a bargain-rate ticket. For something more off-the-wall try cabaret.. Cheesy-but-fun is the Fortune Cookie Cabaret in Lucky Cheng’s where you can watch a drag show as you scoff dinner and cocktails. If you’re into music, iconic venues include Madison Square Gardens, Radio City Music Hall and CBGB’s but there are hundreds of live music bars.

MORE IN STORE Big department stores slash their prices in January and even if you hate shopping, the American experience may change your mind

New York is beautiful in winter

– assistants are disconcertingly courteous. If you can’t face the commercialism of it all hit Chinatown for interesting knickknacks or fake Gucci. Williamsburg has some of New York’s best independent shops and the city is peppered with amazing vintage stores like the awesomely huge Jack’s on 5th Avenue.

NIGHT OWLS Grab a deli sandwich

THE BIG APPLE’S BIG FIVE

CULTURE VULTURES

The Yankee Stadium Baseball is part of the American psyche and it’s worth going to a game even if you’re not a fan. Times Square You’ve seen it in so many movies, the neon craziness of Times Square will be exciting by default. Get a picture with the naked cowboy. Empire State Building The 86th floor of Art Deco skyscraper, New York’s tallest building, offers killer views. Put Jay-Z on your iPod and gaze across the skyline. Statue of Liberty Iconic, historic and good for Facebook profiles, Lady Liberty is worth a look close-up so take the ferry over. Eat a deli sandwich Load it up, have mayo and mustard and wash down with a strong coffee.

Big name museums packed along ‘Museum Mile’ include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim and the Design Museum. Across the park is the American Museum of Natural History, with exhibits on everything from dinosaurs to cosmic pathways.
