DEFINING THE SIMPLE LOOK The fundamental colours defining this spring seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fashion involves plenty of simple light colours from whites to tans. With such minimalistic colours displayed in the fabric, it would be more than appropriate to enhance the attire with complimenting makeup, as a bland face will only degrade the look to be achieved for this season. However, it is also vital to moderate the makeup used, as certain applications may only distract from the modest outfit, instead of illuminating it. Fortunately, the makeup trends for spring 2011 require only simple additions, while proving to be a powerful component to the overall clothing ensemble.

EYES

The eye look this spring is very similar with the winter trend. There are two main looks to focus on: the plain nude look, involving a simple application of mascara to the eyes, and the smoky eye look. To change up the smoky eyes from winter, try using dark blue shades on the eyes instead of black. This alteration can be spotted in runway shows from Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier.

LIPS

Red lips are the epitome of makeup trends this spring season. This has been proven by an array of runway shows including Christiane Dior, Miu Miu and Zac Posen. With the minimalistic colours making way this spring, it becomes perfect to have the all-time classy accentuation of the red lips. Make sure to invest on a pricier shade that is highly pigmented, and long lasting. You should only need to buy one or two lip sticks, since summer will bring about an entirely new face look.

SKIN

Spring is here and the sun is finally shining after months of clouded winter skies. Most of us are lacking in Vitamin D, and require a reload of this supplement for our overall health. For this reason, it is best to avoid thick foundations on the skin, which will block the skin on our face from receiving the sun's healthy dose of Vitamin D. Try to merely target needy with concealer, and be sure to apply sunscreen every day, to avoid the harmful UV rays that invoke aging. In addition, it is helpful to focus on those cheekbones by shading the area just underneath with a thick brush and the appropriate contour shade. This will help diminish the bland look, and certainly provide the illusion of high cheekbones that has been a highlight of many shows including Balenciaga and Christian Dior.

MELISSA NICHOLL Working in the Toronto fashion industry since 1999, Melissa Nicholl is a successful freelance make up artist. Originally from LaSalle, a small town just outside of Windsor, Melissa’s reputation as a makeup artist has grown exponentially in the Toronto industry. She has done work for such big names as L’oreal, Margaret Atwood, MAKE UP FOR EVER, and Workopolis. Her success comes from her love for fashion as well as her ambition. Her humble attitude can easily make anyone feel beautiful. “Beauty comes in so many different forms and definitely is not limited to being skin deep. I honestly think that beauty shines mostly from within, but it's important to take good care of yourself so that it shines through!” We asked Melissa what challenges emerging artists might face today. She brought up the issue of finding well paying work. “I think it's easy to gain a lot of experience in the industry volunteering your time to gain experience and knowledge, but since this seems to have become more of an industry standard than not, sometimes people don't see the obvious value in paying a good makeup artist for their time and work.”

Melissa’s work is inspired by her surroundings, nature, architecture, and different time periods. She is also inspired by those around her. “I look up to so many people and constantly feel inspired by the world around me. My partner William (aka ZAIDEN Art Photographer) is a constant source of support and inspiration. As for makeup artists I admire most...definitely Alice Ghendrih, Kabuki, Wendy Karcher & Erin McCarthy.” As far back as she can remember, Melissa has always played dress up. “I used to dress my little brother in drag and was constantly doing makeup, hair and nail painting on anyone who would let me! I just wish someone had told me in high school that you CAN play dress-up for a living.” Her involvement in art began at an early age. She took painting lessons, played the piano, danced, and even helped to design her town’s crest. As a teenager she was involved with modeling where she had to do her hair and makeup herself.

”I honestly think that beauty shines mostly from within, but it's important to take good care of yourself so that it shines through!”

Melissa first got her big break in the late 90’s, when she got a job working in the Head office at Club Monaco. this job allows her to see the inner workings of the industry and helped develop her love for fashion and make-up.

Melissa was 27 when she started keying at the Toronto Arts and Fashion Week (aka FAT). In 1998, Melissa graduated from the George Brown College Fashion Design Program. Not completely satisfied, she also enrolled in a night school course called professional makeup 1. “That gave me the insight and knowledge I needed to build a kit and do freelance work whenever I got the chance. Even though I worked in Fashion buying offices until 2005, I always did makeup on the side. It was when I met my partner William and we started to create art together that I decided to quit my office job (with Dickies Canada) and become a full time makeup artist.” Melissa Nicholl is extremely self-motivated. Her own passion has driven her to new heights in the fashion world. Most recently, Melissa keyed a fashion show for The Blonds "Fashion still Cares" event during LG Fashion in Toronto. Currently, she is working as an Education Artistry Executive for MAKE UP FOR EVER working to build the pro business in Ontario. We at T&M are excited to see Melissa’s work in the future and look forward to her ever-growing success in the fashion industry.

DANA GOLDENBERG Toronto based wardrobe and fashion stylist, Dana Goldenberg is a force to be reckoned with. Her drive and passion for the fashion world has lead her to work with some of fashion’s celebrity stylists and is currently the fashion editor of Plaid Magazine.

“I just started playing around with different creative shoots and one thing lead to the other. And before I knew it, I had a portfolio”

Starting from a young age, Dana loved fashion. “I was obsessed with Fashion anything. I loved dressing up and watching red carpet arrivals during award shows. I devoured fashion magazines. I remember watching Jeanne Becker on Fashion television when I was four! I really love the research process and I think that really helped. I loved my fine art classes in high school and all of my art history classes in university. Art and fashion as subjects have always been something that I have related to and gravitated towards.”

When we asked Dana why she chose to go into fashion, she told us that there was no other choice for her. “I just loved it. It is truly very hard for me to think of anything else in the world that I would rather do.” In order to pursue her dreams of working in the fashion industry, Dana attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising for visual communication in Los Angeles. Much of her hands on training came from assisting stylists on the side. Dana’s portfolio quickly came together as a result of her playful ambition. I just started playing around with different creative shoots and one thing lead to the other. And before I knew it, I had a portfolio” Dana’s big break finally came when she was attending FIDM ( Fashion Institute of design and merchandising). An opportunity opened up for her to work with two major celebrity stylists. She also took part in the making of the book “Young Fashion Designers Americas”. As a result of that project she developed a number of contacts in the fashion industry. Her wardrobes are inspired by a variety of factors including her mood, the season, and passed trends as well as current ones. We see no signs of Dana slowing down anytime soon when it comes to success in the fashion world. Her ambition and passion for the fashion industry knows no bounds. We expect big things from Dana Goldenberg in the future.

ASIAN BEAUTY

Vanessa Melanson

Asian women can be a wonder to work with, with their smooth, fine skin, unique eyes, distinctive bone structure and youthful appearance. But for many new artists who are starting on their first asian face, it poses a whole new set of challenges and a completely different way of applying makeup that can sometimes be a struggle to perfect. Most Asian women love clean natural looks, with a lot of definition around the eyes. Natural beauty is what a lot of girls and women strive for, but it seems the trend is doubly important for women of the Orient. With companies like Shiseido, for example, that boast some of the best skin care products on the market, it's no surprise to find that these women don't want to overload their skin with makeup. Nevertheless, with a pittle practice, beautiful natural looks can still completely transform as Asian face into a work of breathtaking beauty.

SKIN PREP

Silicone based primers work wonders on women with dry skin, while mattifying primers will help you out with girls whose faces are naturally dewy or shiny. A useful technique for applying foundation is to dry brush it onto the skin with a flat synthetic brush, making sure that you don't have too much foundation on the brush at one time, so that you can properly control the amount of product that you put onto the face, as well as target areas that need it more. For places on the skin's surfaces that are more textured or rough, pat the brush into the skin instead of stroking, since this will help to hide patches of dry skin. Conceal areas that need it and follow it up with a clean thick synthetic kabuki brush, and buff the foundation gently into the skin.

EYES

Keep the eyeshadow close to the lash line, and don't extend the eye makeup too far away from the eyes. Keeping everything close like this and with proper highlighting of the browbone, it will help give the illusion of a deeper set eye. Give special attention to the outer corner of the eyes and the lower outer lash line. Accenting these areas will help to make the eye look bigger, but remember to keep the makeup relatively tight and clean. In the case of a single eyelid, which can be tricky, you want to extend the eyeshadow only (approximately) 2 or 3 millimeters away from the lashes. Curling the lashes and applying false lashes will finish up the look, and it's best to use a heated lash curler whenever possible. Following are a few images of Asian beauty makeup, showcasing both evening and day looks, as well as tips that will be helpful for anyone who wants to achieve flawless makeup application to suit each face.

CONTOUR

Perhaps the most important part of working with asian features is contouring, and depending on whether you are doing the makeup in a Western or Eastern style (Yup! They're different!) it can completely change the planes of the face and give features more depth. Western style makeup emphasizes contouring much more than eastern style, and you will often see the sides of the nose, inner and outer corners of the eyes, cheekbones, temples and jawline darkened and sculpted, with highlights on the bridge of the nose, cheekbones and chin. In contrast to this, Eastern style makeup, favoring a more youthful approach, uses contouring shadows on the sides of the nose and inner corners of the eyes, and softly along the sides of the face, in one long line from the sides of the forehead to the jawline to help lenghten a more round face, while keeping cheeks full. Keep your contouring color as a cool brown, slose to three shades darker than the skin's shade, and gradually build it up to the level you want. Once you've finished contouring and shaping, top it all off with a translucent silicone based powder to help absorb any oil that might come up later in the day. Since most of the focus will be on the eyes, it's good to keep in mind that in a lot of cases, eye makeup will either make or break your look.

BROWS

Brows need to be shaped into a gentle natural curve, and depending on which way the hair grows, trimmed so that the brow hairs don't stick out of the nice shape you've made. Keep the brows light and natural, filling them in with either a dark but soft brown, or a soft but dark charcoal grey. In most cases, heavy dark brows will not suit an Asian face. That doesn't mean that brows have to be thin though. The key here is refined, but natural. Soft and pretty.

HER LOOK:

Koren face is beautifully and softly rounded, but her eyes are very almond shaped. To make her eyes rounder, a soft but still dramatic shading was done to fake a crease, since she has the space needed between her lash line and brow bone to support this kind of look. This is another example of Western style makeup, as you won't see much use of fake eye crease in Eastern looks (where the preference goes to taping the eyelids to make a crease). Salmon, peach and apricot colors look amazing on Koren's warm complection.

Since Tina has wonderful full lips and larger eyes, she works very well for a dramatic day to evening look, in keeping with Eastern style makeup. Heavier black around the eyes make her eyes even larger and help to fill out and balance her wider cheekbones. For extra drama, her lips were kept pale and glossy so that nothing would compete with her smokey eyes. Pale peaches and champagne colors were used with her light complexion.

ASIAN BEAUTY

HER LOOK:

Sonia's features are a bit more bold, with bigger eyes, heavier brows, a strong jawline and a well shaped nose, and Eastern style contouring suited her very well. The makeup was kept soft and pretty, more in keeping with how many Asian women like their day looks, using neutral browns and soft, pretty pinks. Since the contouring was more minimal, her features were accented further by highlighting her cheeks and the bridge of her nose to help give a little more definition and natural dewiness.

Although it's hard to tell from this image, Abby's skin tone is a rich, but not too dark, tan. Her makeup look really emphasizes dramatic highlighting of the browbone and cheekbones, as well as western style contouring. Indeed, her whole look is more western in style, and showcases bronzes, shimmery browns, and champagne colors, which worked so well with her skin tone.
