Telemundo’s Laura Cavazos is one specimen

of incredible diversity. Looking at her credentials you’d wonder if any other local television reporter is as knowledgeable on current and critical hot topics of Valley interest like immigration reform and the human interest side of illegal immigration. She has interviewed countless experts, government officials and celebrities from both sides of the border about border security, crime, international commerce, fashion and culture for Telemundo’s Noticias T40. On the popular Spanish language news broadcast of T40 for anchor–Yolanda De La Cruz, Laura reports on the Valley and State news cirthe Valley’s No. 1 On-Line Magazine

cuit that is aired at 5 PM and again at 10PM each weeknight. Cavazos follows and reports on whats happening behind the scenes and on the ground in the immigration debate twice a week and hears opinions and positions on the issue from both sides of the fence. Although her reporting is neutral on this issue, personally she shows a great deal of empathy for many victims of a broken system, telling us, “I believe this country was built by immigrants, specially here in the Valley. Our growth is dependent on them. We should also stop deporting undocumented students who could become valuable, productive residents here or abroad. Laura Cavazos came to the U.S. from Reynosa with her family when she was a young girl. In Brownsville, she attended Rivera High School and was a member of the National Honor Society. Her most rewarding life experience took place in 2007 when she became a U.S. citizen. She graduated from UTPA, was awarded a degree in Communications & Spanish with Honors and then began a career in television news broadcasting that she had longed for all her young life. She recalls one of her first interviews as probably the most memorable, and not one with a foreign dignitary, but with a young immigrant school girl competing in a UIL competition. page 8 ContempoMag.com

After some warm-up, the radio controlled racers with their piston engines roared ahead, advancing at about 40 miles an hour as they streaked through the finish. If you missed it this three day family affair was fantastic! There were over 400 well preserved classic vehicles, a large exhibit of monster trucks and some of the world’s finest sports cars both inside the McAllen Convention Center and outdoors on the East Parking Lot. Art Wall

ADDING LUSTER with FUSED GLASS The fusing of glass has been around since the early Egyptians discovered the process that molds and shapes silica for both artistic and practical purposes. Locally it has been around ,for not so many years, as a hobby craft and in the art department of universities until Yoli Cantu made the process part of her work for McAllen Stained Glass at Art Village on Main, where she teaches classes on the subject. Fusing is a heat firing process using a kiln that reaches temperatures as high as 1,501 degrees Fahrenheit, but it’s really a precise art all about reaching critical temperatures at the right times to achieve a stimulating piece of glasswork. Low range temperatures produce a slumping condition. Mid ranges temperatures produce tack fusing, while higher temperatures procure a full fuse-each appling a different character to the depth, relief and shape to the glass components. Archeological evidence suggests that the Egyptians were familiar with rudimentary techniques circa 2000 BC. Although some believe that the earliest fusing techniques were first developed by the Romans. Until the development of the glass blowpipe it was used to configure glass vessels and jewels. Now gaining momentum in the world of fine art, fusing began to regain popularity in the early part of the 20th century, particularly in the U.S. during the 1960s. The most contemporary fusing methods involve stacking, or layering thin sheets of glass, often using different colors to create patterns or simple images. The stack is then placed inside the kiln and then heated through a series of rapid heating cycles and soaks until the separate page 22 ContempoMag.com

pieces begin to bond together. The longer the kiln is held at the maximum temperature the more thoroughly the stack will fuse, eventually softening and rounding the edges of the original shape. Once the desired effect has been achieved at the maximum desired temperature, the kiln temperature will be brought down quickly through the temperature range of 815 °C (1,499 °F) to 573 °C (1,063 °F) in order to avoid devitrification. It is then allowed to cool slowly over a specified time, soaking at specified temperature ranges which are essential to the curing process that prevents uneven cooling and breakage and produces a strong finished product. Fused glass techniques are generally used to create art glass, glass tiles, plates and jewelry. Slumping techniques allow the creation of larger, functional pieces like dishes, bowls, plates, and ashtrays. Producing functional pieces generally requires two or more separate firings, one to fuse the glass and a second to shape it. Since the 1970s, more hobbyists have focused on using kiln-fused glass to make beads and components for jewelry. This has become especially popular since the introduction of glass manufactured for the specific purpose of fusing in a kiln. Yoli has been working with fused glass since 1992 but has recently begun to expand her fusing products. Besides jewelry and decorative items, she is now making more functional pieces such as dinnerware, serving pieces, lamps, sconces and even even kitchen sinks. Starting with a line of dinner plates, salad plates and bowls she custom makes the pieces with the style and color that the customer selects. “I teach a fusing class in which the students learn about the properties of glass, how to fuse glass, how to use a kiln and what firing schedules too use.”, says Yoli. By June, she should have a fusing center set up, at which anyone can come in and design with this three thousand year old technique. the Valley’s No. 1 On-Line Magazine

Texas Bar Foundation Supports Project “Justice for Our Neighbors” On January 20th Sonia Falcon (Senior Vice President IBC, NTBF and Texas Bar Foundation board member) presented a check to Justice for Our Neighbors and the Texas Bar Association at the IBC Main Bank in McAllen. The Texas Bar Foundation solicits charitable contributions and provides funding to enhance the rule of law and the system of justice in Texas, especially for programs that relate to the administrations of justice; ethics in the legal profession; legal assistance for the needy; the encouragement of legal research, publications and forums; and the education of the public. The Texas Bar Foundation is pleased to award the grant for the Justice for Our Neighbors Outreach Program. “Our mission states that our contributions provide funding to enhance the rule of law, especially for programs that relate to legal services for the underserved”, said Andrea Stone, Executive Director of the Texas Bar Foundation. Pioneer Teri Castillo

When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.

As a single working mom of three, Teri Castillo stays focused on priority no. 1, the raising of her three fine children, Samantha; 15, Adam; 13 and Thomas 8. It has been a challenge for her but she has, like good moms, adapted to the needs of her children.

“My dad, whom I love very much, will sense whenever I am in distress. “Is everything ok?” he says, “yes dad I am”. “And then it’s all about the kids. He teaches me to be strong, confident, positive, and most importantly, to have faith. My mother has taught me to love, and to be a caring person. Most importantly, I learned from her the real meaning of patience and tolerance.” Teri is grateful to have her parents around in her life and has come to deeply appreciate their positive support. Teri decided to begin college last year and is currently taking prerequisites for the P.T.A. program at S.T.C., while working full time at Briarcliff Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in McAllen as a Physician Liaison. She expects to graduate from the program in about two years while juggling family, work and now school

On her support through faith she says, “What keeps me balanced? One is my Faith and relationship I have with God. The Serenity Prayer always puts me at ease, when disappointments come my way.” The other thing that keeps her going is a love for running that starts daily with a three to five mile run. “It’s a great escape. My goal this year is to run, and maybe win, a full marathon”. she gleams! Teri also plays an active role in the community as an avid C.A.S.A. advocate as time permits. “To be the voice of a child who is now in a safe haven, away from violence gives me a great sense of accomplishment.” Teri’s other activities (when she has the time) include modeling, and dancing. She has appeared in ads for Alhambra, Irish Pub, Tovar Air Conditioning and Pangea Floors where her “at ease appeal” helped to produce successful ad campaigns. We treasure Teri Castillo for all her sincere dedication to family, work, faith and to the community, and for her time and efforts as a successful Contempo model. Congrats on your achievement as Contempo Pioneer! the Valley’s No. 1 On-Line Magazine

WE NEED

First, I found that Lennon, our new pack member, fit in well. He had been neutered, which didn’t seem to bother Buck, while Brita took to him like a good mom (she never had a chance to be one). Also, I noted a huge increase in their play time since Lennon arrived. Both Brita and Buck are much more active now. Although we have taken the dogs for long walks, they had gotten “the lazies” in the last few years and now Lennon has given them new energy.

YOUR HELP

About a month ago I adopted a dog that a friend couldn’t care for–little Lennon, a one year old poodle mix, so I took him into my pack. We were three-Buck a Siberia Husky, Brita is my Weimaraner, and now Lennon makes us four. There is, no doubt, a great deal more responsibility to care for another pet. But, I discovered some wonderful things began to happen to my pack that made it all worth the effort.

With a full fledged crisis brewing in the Middle East What Went Wrong is a great read considering you won’t get a handle on things from the flash segments on the daily news. Many Americans who are amazed or caught off guard by the state of events in Egypt will get a quick heads-up from Bernard Lewis’s take on how Islamic nations cope or fail to cope with the tempting culture shock of western influence. He explains how two ideologies have lead the region down a critical path–one that attributes all evil to an abandonment of the divine heritage of Islam ie: Iran, while another resembles the national socialist model ie; Syria. Egypt’s predicament could ignite similar uprisings to nations of both extremes. With this read you will see how Lewis had an early grasp of the situation. available at Barnes & Noble

Political Commentary

Tone of the

Debate Can Political Extremes Incite Hatred and Violence? Although, for the most part, our elected representa-

tives have played no clear part to incite violent reaction in support of their causes, that cannot be said about popular talk radio stars who project absurd ideas, embellished with tones of anger. We are suppose to believe that all is fair in politics but, isn’t it really all about ratings and profits? For the most part, the showboats belong to the far right who many looked to for some balance to counter the liberal media that resurfaced in support of the Obama candidacy in 2008. But, their burst of popularity should wane with this new wave of “populist” style propaganda that is simply rubbing the wrong way while airing a sense of desperation. These Neo-populists, who have built big ratings and who have attracted devoted followers, will be eclipsed, like the extreme cult evangelist Jim Jones, who just could not deliver on the date of the second coming of Christ.

voice to imitate Jesse Jackson. With emphasis, he as, pronounced the word “Ask” by replacing it with the phonetic sound of the word “Axe”. Each of many times he did it, it seemed always and only to make fun of Jackson’s accent, while having no bearing on the arguments, except possibly to suggest Jackson is stupid. And, to think these are the guys who where totally against criminalizing hate speech legislation! Now we now why..as it would limit the potency of their spirited and valuable message. Neo-Populist No. 3 – State Rep. Susan Angle A relished program guest, Rep. Susan Angle represents District 150 of Tomball, Texas. Her face gets all distorted with expression when she speaks of Latin American undocumented workers whom she claims, universally exploit legal births in this country and widely support the cartels. She was the first to propose state legislation to actively involve the state in federal matters of immigration (as if we can afford the federal legal bills like Arizona is now facing). In word, deed and expression she exemplifies the perfect bigot who, like the talk personalities, cuddles her “backwoods” constituents with conspiracy. The real problem no one can deny is that the most susceptibly weak minded individuals are the first to laugh and repeat the nightly broadcast demeanor of the far right talk shows like Beck’s.

There certainly are a few “far left” extremists around but they just are not quite compelling enough in their hate speech and besides, they had fallen off the media map way back in the early 70’s. Interestingly, the far right still makes vivid attacks on these, now aging, senior citizens.

As political stakes rise for the 2012 elections shall we see the extremist pitch rise to new levels, leading some to think that “the constitution must be defended at all costs” from any the evildoers? Recently I have noted Beck maneuver into a strange head tilt after he rants as if to say, “If you don’t buy that one, how about this”, looking like a snake oil peddler working the circus route. REMODELING FOR GOOD REASON Replace Metal Windows with Vinyl For Efficiency, Comfort, Sight and Style These days owning and maintaining a primary

residence is about as good as it gets in making a good long term investment. As mortgages begin to loosen up this year, more and more people will be buying and upgrading existing homes built over the last 20 years that by no means qualify as energy efficient. More likely, they resemble the gas guzzling monsters we drove back then, getting about six miles to the gallon. Keeping a home up to speed these days starts with increasing energy efficiency so that comfort need not be sacrificed as the cost of energy increases. In this issue we take a look at the practicality of replacing old aluminum windows with modern, high efficiency vinyl windows that could, depending on the age of your existing units, represent a major energy savings if replaced. METAL WINDOW FRAMES and EXPOSURE TO THERMAL CHANGES Although durable, the metal frame of aluminum windows vigorously transfers latent heat or cold into a home when compared to a vinyl frame. The difference is large and indisputable. Aluminum frames that have east, west and southern exposures have greater heat transfers. Just touch your window frame on a hot or cold day to feel the thermal effect of the metal frame. Depending on the number of windows you have and their location, the effect will vary on the A/C impact of your electricity bill. Old metal frames were, for the most part, built as hollow tubing. On the contrary, modern vinyl frames come with their voids filled with polyurethane foam insulation to further stop thermal movement in the frame from entering the home.

MODERN VS. OUTDATED GLASS for a 200% GAIN in INSULATION VALUE The configuration of glass elements have come along way in the last 20 years as well. Whereas the older window requirements had some level of efficiencies, they are a far cry from what’s available today. Even with direct sun exposure the: window coatings, gas emulsions, and enhanced gaskets of new vinyl windows can almost stop heat gain as good as an old fashioned exterior louver. Any vinyl showroom can prove their product’s superiority with a simple heat test using a lamp/glass display that allows you to actually feel, in a convincing way, how heat penetrates the two glass products very differently. All new vinyl windows come with these new enhanced glass products that will further reduce your electrical bill. LONGER LASTING DURABILITY and EASE of OPERATION Vinyl windows are also valued for their ease of operation. Single hung metal windows get clunky over time and tend to stick when opening them. Because their seals have grown weak, their springs tend to loose their bounce and fail to close properly, making infiltration of outside air more likely. This problem can often occur at the time of construction as installers mistakenly place all the weight on the center of the window sill as they set it down so to rest a bit. This bends the window sill beyond level so that it cannot meet the weather-stripping when the window is placed in the closed position. PROPER INSTALLATION insures PROPER PERFORMANCE and ADDED SOUND INSULATION PROPERTIES You can spot this installation defect by looking for dust at the base of your operable windows. If the same mistake is made when installing a vinyl window, because it flexes, it will not mold out of shape from the weight, therefore retains

Vinyl windows are a great way to reduce your home energy bills and make home living more enjoyable. They enhance a homes value, both inside and out. And, with modern techniques, can be installed in a matter of a few days. Major manufacturers are a good bet for being able to uphold warranties over their long period of utility, meaning they have professionally trained installers who they can rely on to get the job done right the first time. There still remains some federal tax credits for improving your home insulation values by installing vinyl windows, so there is some payback as well!
