SENATORS SOCCER HEAD COACH Wulf-Dieter Koch Maine-Fort Kent, 1989 Fourth Season During his tenure at AUM, Koch has led the Senators to a combined 42-14-3 record. The men’s soccer team has finished each of the last three seasons ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll, with the 2007 squad (17-5, 8-1 in SSAC) winning the NAIA Region XIII tournament championship and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament Final Four. “Perhaps most importantly, Coach Koch demands excellence in the classroom, on the field, and in the community -- everything that you look for in a person heading an athletic team,” says AUM Athletic Director Steve Crotz. “Wulf has shown that he is extremely capable of leading the program. He has experience and a commitment to success, and I look forward to working with him and supporting his efforts to maintain this program at a championship level.” Koch now has 15 years experience coaching on the men’s side, beginning at his alma mater, the University of Maine-Fort Kent in 1991 and 1992. He then moved on to the University of Maine-Machias, where he led the men’s program for four seasons. He spent four seasons in South Dakota at National American University where he led the Mavericks to four consecutive NAIA post-season appearances, reaching the NAIA Region III semi-finals all four seasons, and advancing on to the NAIA National Tournament once. While at NAU, Koch was selected to the 1998 NAIA and National Soccer Coaches Association of America Regional Coach of the Year and was named the 2000 NAIA Region III Sectional Coach of the Year. The next move for Koch was to Spring Hill College, where he coached both the men’s and women’s soccer programs for two seasons, before coming to AUM. Koch initially served as the women’s head coach for three seasons, posting a 4819-3 record that included a NAIA National Tournament Sweet 16 appearance and a SSAC championship in 2004. Koch has recorded a 153-117-14 overall record for the men’s side, a 71-50-4 record for the women’s side, and in 2007 was inducted into the sports Hall of Fame at his alma mater, University of Maine-Fort Kent. Koch is originally from Roth, Germany, where he attended Wilhelm von Stieber Realschule. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History at UM-Fort Kent in 1989 and his Master of Education in Athletic Administration/Sport Management from Springfield (Mass.) College in 1991. He also holds his teaching certification from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Koch holds the Premier Diploma from the NSCAA, as well as “A” and “Youth” licenses from the United States Soccer Federation.

Student Assistant Coach Fourth Season
Graduate Assistant/Goalkeeper Coach Second Season
Beginning his fourth season as a student assistant coach for the Senators, Gestsson continues the tradition of coaches and players from Iceland who have made a strong impact on the success of the AUM men’s soccer program. Gestsson’s coaching career began in 2003 at the Third Division Club Huginn in Iceland, where he led the squad into the Second Division during the 2005 season. After three seasons with Huginn, he moved to division rival IR, where he spent one season. Gestsson was in charge of the soccer operations of UMF Alftanes until his arrival at Auburn Montgomery in August of 2007. He currently holds the UEFA B License and is continuing his pursuit of his UEFA A License. He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in physical education at AUM.
Balog is entering his second season as the goalkeepers coach for the AUM Senators. Combining last year’s experience with his goalkeeping background, Balog will be a valuable asset to this year’s team. He has played on several indoor and outdoor teams in Belgium giving him experience ranging from the national to regional levels. Balog holds a bachelor’s degree in social science from HIRL College in Belgium and a master’s degree from Christian Brothers University. He is currently working towards a second master’s at AUM in international relations. He currently holds a NSCAA Goalkeeping License level 1/2 and a NSCAA Coaching License.

Technical Trainer/Recruiting Assistant First Season
Student Assistant Coach First Season
Resende enters his first season as a technical trainer and recruiting assistant for AUM. Previously, he was the assistant coach for five seasons at crosstown rival Faulkner University.
Kariya is beginning his first year as a student assistant coach with the Senators, after spending the past two seasons playing midfield for the team.
In 2007, Resende became a member of the National Soccer Association of America and later received a certification of strength and conditioning. In addition, he has a UFMG and ENAF Brazilian coaching certificate, a FMFS officiating certification and a USSF National D License.
During his playing career, Kariya scored 12 career goals and posted 10 assists, for a total of 34 points. In addition to his playing career with the Senators, he also spent two seasons with the Des Moines Menace of the USL Premier Development League.
In 2006, Resende played for the Atlanta Silverbacks in the Professional Development League and has also played professionally for the Massachusetts Pioneers in the United Soccer League.
Originally from Osaka, Japan, Kariya transferred to Auburn Montgomery from Darton College. He is currently completing his bachelor’s degree in sport science at AUM.
Resende graduated from AUM with a bachelor’s in physical education and Sports Leadership. He also holds a bachelor’s in sports management and a master’s in physical education from Faulkner. Resende was a standout midfielder for AUM, and contributed to the runner-up 2001 and 2004 NAIA National Championships. Resende has coached club soccer locally for three years and is the current head coach for Montgomery Catholic High School.

Nyonebue joins the Senators after spending the past two seasons at Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. As a freshman, he led the Wolves in shots with 56. He also tied for third in goals and tied for second in shots on goal. In 2008, his first year at Newberry, he was redshirted.

SENATORS SOCCER 2009 Year In Review Expectations were high for the Senators going into the 2009 season, as they began the season as the Southern States Athletic Conference favorite and were ranked 18th in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll. AUM started out strong, winning its first three matches by a combined score of 8-1 and climbing to 11th in NAIA Coaches’ Poll. The competition proved to be more of a challenge as the Senators’ winning streak was slowed with a 0-0 tie against 16th ranked Martin Methodist and then snapped with a 2-0 loss at No. 10 Embry-Riddle. The Senators rebounded nicely from their first defeat of the season and went 3-0-1 over their next four matches, before suffering their second loss of the season at the hands of No. 3 Lindsey Wilson. The team’s resiliency was once again on display as they went 5-1 over the final six games of the regular season, with their lone defeat coming against No. 4 Southern Polytechnic State University. The Senators concluded the regular season second in the Southern States Athletic Conference standings and ranked 17th in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll, with a record of 12-3-2.
The Senators quickly advanced to the finals of the SSAC tournament by defeating Emmanuel College and Shorter University. Lee University defeated the Senators for the second straight year in the conference tournament, beating them 2-1 in the conference championship. A number of Senators were recognized with postseason awards for their efforts during the 2009 season. Four Senators, Stefan Arnarson, Sveinn Jonsson, Yuki Kariya and Gunnar Kristinsson, were named SSAC first-team All-Conference. Arnarson was also named NAIA third-team All-American, SSAC Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. Kile Kennedy and Chris Ross were selected as second-team All-SSAC performers. Jonsson, Kariya, Kristinsson, Ross, Nik Chamberlain, Kristjan Hannesson and Arnar Thordarson were all named to the SSAC All-Academic Team. Chamberlain, Jonsson, Kariya and Thordarson were also recognized as NAIA Academic Scholar-Athletes.

SENATORS SOCCER Southern States Athletic Conference and NAIA
The 2010-11 academic year will mark the 11th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The newly expanded conference now showcases 16 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). Finally in 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence, and quality that appropriately represents its 16 member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 21 SSAC teams and 10 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up.

Since the inception of its athletic program in 1975, Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 18 national championships, and six of the school’s eight varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kansas, is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on August 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual.

SENATORS SOCCER Chancellor John Veres Auburn University at Montgomery, 1976 Auburn Montgomery Chancellor John G. Veres III is no stranger to AUM, having received his Bachelor and Master of Psychology in 1976 and 1978, respectively, and has worked for over 30 years with the university. Veres has been serving as chancellor since his appointment in May 2006 by former Auburn University President Ed Richardson. “I’m proud to be an AUM graduate and the first graduate of AUM to have the opportunity to serve the university as chancellor” says Veres. Veres received his Ph. D in Industrial/Organizational Psychology in 1983 and has published extensively on human resources management (HRM) topics, including over 40 articles in scholarly journals, as well as nine book chapters, two edited volumes, numerous technical reports, and a book entitled “The Challenge of Front Line Management: Flattened Organizations in the New Economy.” He has consulted in over 80 employment discrimination lawsuits, testifying on assessing adverse impact, selection procedure validity, and other issues on equal employment opportunity. He currently serves as Special Master to Federal District Judge C. Lynwood Smith in the Northern District of Alabama, and has served as the Court’s expert to federal district courts in Arkansas and Georgia. He has long been involved in community affairs. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of the Alabama Technology Foundation, the Alabama World Affairs Council, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery Area YMCA, and Seton Haven. Veres also serves on the Governor’s Commission for Action in Alabama’s Black Belt, and as technical consultant to the Alabama Commission on Government Accountability. Veres is married to the former Beth Louise Sullivan. They have three children – Erin, John and Olivia – and two grandchildren, Cole and Lena.
Athletic Director Steve Crotz University of Missouri, 1979 Steve Crotz is entering his third year as full-time Athletic Director at Auburn Montgomery after serving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. In his current capacity, Crotz has worked with AUM Administration to inaugurate a softball program, as well as to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. “Under his leadership, private contributions have nearly doubled those collected the last year we had a full-time athletic director in place,” says Chancellor John Veres. “As we find ourselves in troubling economic times, his combination of commitment to excellence and financial acumen will serve us well.” Crotz was no stranger to AUM before serving as athletic director. For 12 seasons, Crotz served as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and his teams advanced to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up finish for the 1999-2000 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, and in October 2009 was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz received his Bachelors degree in Education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his Master degree in Secondary Education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall

AUM ATHLETICS FACILITIES Since the installation of its athletic department in 1975, Auburn University at Montgomery has been know throughout the NAIA for its competitiveness on the field and court of play. Furthermore, AUM has to offer some of the best facilities in the Southeast to accommodate that competitive spirit. The AUM Physical Education Complex serves as the venue for all AUM men’s and women’s basketball home games. Originally built in 1976, the gymnasium underwent a face-lift during the Summer of 2010. Renovations included a refinishing of the gym floor as well as the installation of new bleachers that seat 2,760. The newest addition to the list of AUM athletics facilities comes with the newly built on-campus softball field, on which the AUM softball team was able to play all home games during the 2010 season. The field is part of the AUM Softball Complex, which will eventually include the construction of a press box, concessions stand, locker rooms, and offices

for the AUM softball coaching staff. The AUM Tennis Complex, also built in 1976, features a newly refinished playing surface for each of its 10 courts. Aside from serving as the site for all AUM men’s and women’s home tennis matches, the AUM Tennis Complex also serves as a host site for the annual Small College Blue & Gray Classic held by the City of Montgsomery. The AUM Soccer Complex has undergone several updates since its construction in 1985. In the early 2000’s new Olympic-style goals were installed along with a new scoreboard in 2006. Several landscaping renovations have taken place at the facility as well. The AUM Baseball Complex serves as the home field for Senators baseball and features stadium seating, a grandstand, press box and concessions stand for the convenience of Senator baseball fans. The complex has served as host site for the NAIA Region XIII Tournament in 2006 as well as the 2007 SSAC Baseball tournament.

In 2002, Montgomery got the good news that Hyundai would locate its first United States automobile manufacturing facility in the Capital City. The construction of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama’s 2-million-squarefoot automotive manufacturing facility was completed in 2004. Hyundai’s first North American plant employs over 2,000 workers and produces the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai suppliers in the Montgomery metropolitan area have created more than $221 million in capital investment and 2,264 jobs. Area hospitals offer comprehensive medical services and facilities, as well as cutting-edge specialty services and practices. Montgomery residents have access to neonatal intensive care, open-heart surgical and cardiac treatment facilities and physicians, rehabilitative and therapeutic orthopedic medicine, cancer treatment centers, and more. A star on the steps of the State Capitol building (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) marks the spot where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederate States of America. Montgomery also is the location of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s pulpit, from which he preached the gospel of non-violent revolution in the fight for Civil Rights, and is the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which sparked the movement for equal rights throughout the nation. SENATORS SOCCER Montgomery, Alabama provides a glimpse into this important event that shaped the destiny of a nation, along with the new Children’s Annex to the museum, which provides a background on segregation through an interactive “time machine” exhibit. Visitors also should stop at the new Civil Rights Memorial Center, located alongside the Civil Rights Memorial, designed by famed architect Maya Lin. The Center, operated by the Southern Poverty Law Center, contains state-of-the-art exhibits and in-depth information about Civil Rights Movement martyrs, a 69-seat theater, a classroom for educational activities, and a section dedicated to contemporary social justice issues and the Wall of Tolerance. The city is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the fifth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world, which draws visitors from throughout the world. Also located in Blount Cultural Park is the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, which houses an extensive permanent collection, including Old Master prints by such artists as Rembrandt, Caneletto and Goya, and noted American artists John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper. Additionally, there is world-class ballet, art education opportunities, a symphony orchestra, and more. There also are many enjoyable family activities. The Montgomery Zoo boasts more than 700 animals from five different continents, including a brand new African Elephant exhibit. People of all ages will be fascinated by a visit to Old Alabama Town, where they can see how early Alabamians lived and worked, or the Alabama Department of Archives and History, with its wealth of information. Children will be especially delighted by the Archives’ “Grandma’s Attic” exhibit, which is full of hands-on activities, costumes and games. Another fun treat is the unique Alabama Cattlemen’s Association “Mooseum,” which provides a history of cowboy culture and livestock production. Shopping is also a popular pastime. tucked away into historic districts like Old Cloverdale and the Mulberry District, as well as first class shopping malls and centers. Eastdale Mall boasts the area’s only indoor ice skating rink, in addition to a wide variety of shops and eateries. Festival Plaza offers specialty shops, Rave Motion Pictures theater, and Shall We Paint?, a paint-your-own pottery activity and shop. The Shoppes at EastChase is a “lifestyle center” with upscale retailers and restaurants. And there’s so much more. Montgomery has many shops and restaurants sure to suit any visitor’s whim.

Sports & Recreation In February 2003, Montgomerians were thrilled to learn that the AA baseball team owned by Orlando Rays Baseball Inc., which is owned by the Major League Baseball team the Tampa Bay Rays, had been acquired to play ball in Montgomery. The team was dubbed the Montgomery Biscuits and a new $26 million baseball stadium opened in Spring 2004 beside the Alabama River. The stadium is a key element in the city’s ongoing Riverfront development and downtown revitalization project, with downtown and riverfront investment now totaling more than $900 million. A riverwalk and new convention center and hotel, The Renaissance, have added more appeal to the downtown area. Additionally, the city’s Parks & Recreation Department operates many facilities located throughout the city, hosting such activities as golf, swimming, tennis, softball and other sports, plus artistic and creative endeavors, physical fitness classes, activities for those with physical or mental disabilities, and educational programs, including a Planetarium. The city’s Cramton Bowl hosts high school and college football games, as well as special events, and Paterson Field provides facilities for high school and college baseball games, including the annual NCAA Division II college baseball championship. Visitors to the River Region can also visit the nearby Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville. The Trail is recognized as one of the finest golf experiences anywhere.
