Campus leaders define their TJ experience Do well, be well: Keeping things in perspective Joey Valery SGA President To my classmates: In the great diaspora of talent and attractiveness that the Thomas Jefferson class of 2014’s dispersion among our chosen universities will come to be known as, our feet will fall in step with the March of the world’s brightest and most visionary. It is a March that will save lives, advance society in every conceivable way and alter the very universe around us, the stirring rhythm of our ceaseless tread echoing throughout the stars. With every step, proudly bear what TJ has wrought. Enter every job interview with the courage with which you entered every asking week. Liven all that progress by dancing along the way, like you did in MEX and I-Nite. TJ has taught us each to sing, if only in the shower. Now it’s time for us to turn off the water, and emerge from behind the curtains of our self-doubt.

We must wrap ourselves in towels of confidence, dry off a little, and boldly let our voices ring out through this opportunityfilled bathroom of a world. People will stop to listen, but as they do, remember to keep things in perspective. By all means, mercilessly hunt down your goals, but do so calmly and contentedly, firm in Laozi’s eternal belief that, “If good happens, good. If bad happens, good.” If there is one thing that can be said about college and whatever comes after, it’s that things will happen - let them be good. As you navigate the sea of freedom upon which you are embarking, do not let the horizon so occupy your gaze as to render you absent. There may be a sandbar in your path to be avoided, or even just some dolphins and stuff you’d be sorry to have missed. Live your life, take advantage of your liberty, and never stop pursuing happiness. You will all do well – just remember to be well too.

Thank you: Appreciation for 2014’s enthusiastic leaders Christine Mayuga Class of 2014 President Dear class of 2014, It’s been an honor to serve you as your class president these past three years. There’s so much I could say about our class. We are caring, brilliant and of course perfect. Most of all, we know how to stick together. Every single senior has some quality or accomplishment that makes us the outstanding class we are today. I can’t wait to hear about whatever future endeavors you will all be up to. Make TJ proud! Remember the strength and growth we have gained in the past four years. From the double TJ admissions tests to the perfect prom, I’m proud to say we did it all. I’d like to take this time to thank everyone who helped me throughout my presidency. To our class sponsors, Mr. Brosek and Mr. 1234man, thanks for all the blood, sweat and tears you have poured into our class. To our administrative sponsors Mr. DeRose and Mrs. Bosley, thanks for providing the best support

a class could ask for. To our principal Dr. Glazer, thanks for always believing in our class. To our parent liaisons Mrs. Rezazad and Mrs. Ruiter, thanks for all the motherly love. To anyone who was ever on class council, thanks for all your hard work. To Prom Comm and Grad Committee, thanks for making our last year at TJ the best one yet. To anyone who ever dressed up for a spirit day, donated to our fundraisers or bought our class shirts, thanks for your participation. To all the underclassmen, thanks for accepting the fact that we are the best class. Don’t party too hard once we leave. And of course, to the members of the class of 2014, thanks for giving me the opportunity to lead a group of such amazing people. Congratulations, 2014! I love you all so much and I’ll never forget you. Please answer my calls when I start organizing the reunion. Yours Truly, Christine Mayuga

Multidisciplinary approach: Be open to trying new things

Leadership: Motivation without personal gain

Parth Chopra MUN, NHS, Investment Club, Science Fair, Project BEST We sometimes become entrapped in a mindset that encourages us to take the road most traveled, to pursue courses and activities that help us become that doctor or engineer. This linear path leaves much to be desired: we miss out on experiences that could potentially redefine us. That was me freshman year – until I decided to “try something new.” It was one of the best decisions I could have made. From starting a nonprofit organization to conducting research in unfamiliar fields, pursuing multiple activities has allowed me to meet new people, see new connections, and develop new skills. What I master in one activity can be used in another and this allows me to see novel underlying themes in my studies. So I encourage you to try that new activity, take that unconventional class, because hey, you never know what you may be missing out on.

Raeford Penny NHS President, International Key Club President We, as high schoolers, have this mentality to gain as many leadership positions, titles and accolades as we can, but what this leads to is stretching ourselves thin, having to put one over another and not producing quality products. We do not need many titles or a long list of accolades to lead and inspire; oftentimes the most important and influential individuals are those who do not need to be credited with a title or accolade for their work. Yet at the same time, don’t let anyone tell you that you are not qualified or can’t win, the only characteristics you need at your side are heart, the drive, the tenacity, the motivation to learn and the yearning for the challenge.

Relay: Persevere until you achieve your goals Anna Seo Relay for Life Event Chair After four years of doing Relay, one lesson in particular that I will always remember is to always expect the unexpected. Once the construction started, we started running into all kinds of problems, especially with finding an alternative venue. A lot of people lost interest in Relay after it was hosted at a middle school last year, so our committee had to really put our heads together to get our numbers up and in the end we joined hands with the Alexandria Community Relay to create a bigger, successful and fun event. Despite the constant “you can’t do this” and “you’re not allowed to do that,” I’ve learned to be more optimistic and find ways to make the best out of any situation.

I-Nite: The crossroads of culture and passion Sarah Quettawala Namaste President After being involved with Namaste for four years, I could not have asked for a better last INite. For many, I-Nite is one night to showcase talent, dance moves, and culture, but after two years of planning, for me, I-Nite 2014 became about watching friends and fellow students celebrate TJ’s diversity and watching an audience of over 2,000 people smile at the energy and camaraderie that embodies Thomas Jefferson. It is almost impossible to realize how much behind the scenes work and preparation goes into putting on such a tremendous show so I would like to thank the seven other Namaste officers and both sponsors for their passion and hard work this entire year.

GradComm members discuss ceremony goals

Nikhil Garg “To me, life is not like a chemical equation constantly in equilibrium. Our successes do not necessarily have to be matched by an equal number of failures. In fact, our successes do not have to stem from our failures at all. Here at TJ, we possess the foresight, creativity and work ethic that allow us to deal with our problems before they lead to failure. And it is this ability to preempt failure that should allow us to revel in success after success.”

MR. KOSEK Q: When you think of our class, what adjectives come to mind? A: Enthusiastic, motivated and definitely classy.

Q: What distinguished the class of 2014 from the classes before it? A: 2014 has an infectiously high level of TJ spirit.

Q: What was your most difficult moment in dealing with our class?

A: Dispelling the myths and fallacies that have surrounded the class’ financial standing. There has been amazing support and leadership throughout the years that have come up with effective fundraisers. The net result was an elegant, picturesque and delectably catered prom.

Q: What was your most memorable moment in dealing with our class?

A: Two things really stand out. The junior “Picnic Out” was so chill. It was just a really nice relaxing time with more watermelon and rice krispy treats than you could ever imagine. Also the 2014-2015 Powderpuff game was downright awesome.

Q: What parting words do you have for the class of 2014 as they graduate? A: Correlation does not imply causation.

MR. FOREMAN Q: When you think of our class, what adjectives come to mind? A: Dedicated, caring, enthusiastic.

Q: What distinguished the class of 2014 from the classes before it? A: The ability to overcome adversity. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for this class but the council and the rest of the students really stepped up to make sure that everything still went off without a hitch and the class was sufficiently funded.

Q: What was your most difficult moment in dealing with our class?

A: When rumors started to go around that our class did not have enough money for our events, that we were broke, etc. They ended up being very unfounded but once rumors start it really doesn’t matter if they are true or not to spread around the school. That was tough because it painted the class in a bad light without any reliable evidence to support it.

Q: What was your most memorable moment in dealing with our class?

A: Prom. It was a really beautiful evening and all of the students were amazing. All of the students who helped plan and run the event did an outstanding job, and I was more than pleased with the venue and how the night went.

Q: What parting words do you have for the class of 2014 as they graduate?

A: Choose your own path. The journey to leading a successful and happy life is not a straight line – rather more like getting from one end of a spider web to the other. There are many paths you can take and lots of decisions about which way to turn. Whether that choice moves you closer to your goal or is a setback is not nearly as important as making sure you make the choices for yourself.

Anna Seo “Hopefully Dr. Hrabowski’s message will inspire and remind us to pursue what we are truly passionate about.”

Varun Jain “Now I look upon you, Class of 2014, transformed from the beady-eyed freshmen I once knew to the strong and courageous Adonises that you are today, ready to mold the world with your hands... Believe me when I say, that there is no doubt in my mind that each and every one of you will find your own version of success and will live life to the utmost.”

Dhruv Gaba

Dr. Freeman Hrabowski scheduled for keynote by Ellen Kan Managing Editor Graduation Committee (GradComm) is currently finalizing plans for graduation. The group, consisting of seniors Dhruv Gaba, Carolyn Ours and Anna Seo, was selected in the spring of 2013. The process of preparing for graduation has been arduous; the trio was responsible for reaching out to potential keynote speakers, arranging student speaker auditions, introducing speakers at the ceremony and creating pamphlets, among other duties. “Both the best and most stressful aspect of GradComm has been finding a keynote speaker,” Gaba said. “We’ve had to send many emails and face rejections, but now we couldn’t be happier.” This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, who has been president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) since 1992. Hrabowski was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME Magazine in 2012, and he has received other accolades in recognition of his leadership and expertise in science and math. Under Hrabowski’s leadership, UMBC has been ranked the number one Up-And-Coming School by U.S. News & World Report for the past five years. “Dr. Hrabowski is a dynamic and interesting speaker, as evidenced by his TED talk and other speaking engagements,” Ours said. “He has experience in STEM fields, albeit with a population far different from our own, so we hope he can bring outside perspective to those accustomed to the TJ bubble.” GradComm is also looking forward to the valuable advice that Hrabowski can give to the seniors, who will all be crossing the threshold into adulthood. “We chose Dr. Hrabowski because of his involvement in education and his vast, well-rounded accomplishments,” Seo said. “We think he would be able to provide the graduating class with great advice about college and a different perspective as to what ‘success’ in life means.”

“It’s going to be a great moment when we all get recognition for the tremendous hard work we’ve all done.”

Carolyn Ours “My favorite part is yet to come - I’m really excited to help set up Mason and introduce Dr. Glazer as our first speaker.”

Dr. Glazer, what do we mean to you? Q: When you think of our class, what adjectives come to mind? A: Spirited, problem solvers, self-directed, socially responsible.

Q: What distinguished the class of 2014 from the classes before it?

A: Their commitment to serve in wide variety of capacities (welfare, country, school, community, eighth period clubs) has transformed the lives of others. They are a remarkable group that knows how to give back to improve their community.

Q: What was your most difficult moment in dealing with our class? A:The most difficult moment will be saying goodbye. I <3 the Class of 2014.

Q: What was your most memorable moment in dealing with our class?

A: Two of them stand out – 1) going to Wallops Island to see the launch of the satellite. It is impressive to see seven years of students pass on their work, and the Class of 2014 finished it. 2) I-Nite– I am so proud of Namaste’s efforts to make the show available through numerous venues to meet the demand for seats (over 2500). It was a great way to celebrate not only Namaste, but also all of our cultural groups in our incredibly diverse community.

Q: What parting words do you have for the class of 2014 as they graduate?

A: Regardless of your career path, continue your acts of service through your advanced knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. You have the capacity to make great connections through research and personal interests. Also, sing the quadratic formula as the opportunity presents itself.

Journalism seniors reminisce and look ahead Working on newspaper was a life-changing experience by Shayna Hume Editor-in-Chief The experience of being on the tjTODAY staff has been one like no other, for me. Since my first piece, “Swamplandia!,” got published in 2011 to this senior issue, the reporting, writing and editing process has been an adventure that has taken me to every nook and cranny of the school, locations all over the United States and more than a few times, recently, into construction zones. I’ve easily spent more time in room 107 than anywhere else in the school, and I don’t regret it for a minute. It fundamentally altered who I was, and gave me thousands of memories I’ll remember from my time at TJ. To TJ: I’ve learned so much from my time here, and I think all members of the Class of 2014 are fundamentally different people than who we were four years ago. I’m so glad to have spent the past four years with you, and I can’t wait to see what you all do in future. To our advisers: Ms. Seavey, thank you

so much for everything you did as adviser for my first three years on staff. You not only improved my writing tenfold, but my work ethic as well, and you always held the rest of the staff and I to the highest of standards. Ms. Harris, I can’t even believe how much we’ve done this year. Our online presence burgeoned, and we still managed to pull off seven amazing print issues. I learned so much more about layout and design, and you were always supportive when I wanted to try something new. Thank you for being an amazing adviser this year. To the staff: Working with all of you, including those who have already graduated from TJ, has been an unparalleled experience. You all have given me so much, from all the members of the Classes of 2012 and 2013 who taught me how to use Photoshop and InDesign, to all the underclassman still part of the staff who have worked tirelessly on every issue this year. You guys never gave up, even at the end of 8:00 p.m. late nights. This newspaper is because of you.

Journalism is a vehicle for expression in a STEM school

by Tommy Lunn Opinion Editor Although I’ve certainly had my issues with TJ over these past four years, it certainly is not without the good. TJ is a place where, for the most part, people can be who they are without fear of backlash. More than at most other schools, teachers and students have a two-way system of respect. Incredible academics, as challenging as they may be, abound. That said, there are so many aspects at TJ that bring down the arts and humanities. Class requirements, copious amounts of homework and even a mentality against them seem to stop students from taking advantage of what the school has to offer in non-STEM areas. But sometimes you have to look beyond what seems to be in the way in order to see the good. Writing for tjTODAY has not been easy. Frankly, nor have many of my other choices to avoid the “typical” path of a TJ student. Summer school, unweighted classes, extra work and a lack of respect for what I do have been present everywhere I look. But when I think about it and begin to realize what I have done, the fact is that the cost is completely outweighed by the benefits. tjTODAY has been a way for me, as the opinion editor but also as a staff member, to get my voice heard. Of course it’s great to hear compliments and know that many people read what I have to say, but it’s about more than that. Sometimes things need to be said when no one else is willing to say them, even if people are reluctant to hear them. Being able to work with a group of such different, diverse people to bring news to the student body in a place where too few people are willing to do so is something I may find difficult in the moment, but I know I will appreciate more than anything else in the long run.

tjTODAY helped me discover my passion for journalism by Yena Seo Social Media Editor “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” All Lord of the Rings references aside, falling in love with journalism and joining tjTODAY was an unexpected journey of sorts, a whirlwind adventure I never expected to be swept off to. From daily news quizzes in Journalism 1 to Boston, tjTODAY has given me confidence, a creative outlet and a love for all things journalism-related. Arriving at a science and tech school, journalism was not on my course list freshman year. I was slated to take orchestra instead, the most obvious fine arts elective for a violinist to take. But for some reason, my mother pushed me to switch my schedule and enroll in the course, a decision I will always be truly thankful for. Even after this senior issue goes to print, journalism will still continue to impact my life. If it wasn’t for tjTODAY, I wouldn’t have learned to love AP Style, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro X. If it wasn’t for tjTODAY, I would not have found the confidence to become a Cappies critic or a WUSA9 Campus Correspondent, or have received a Washington Post internship. And most importantly, if it wasn’t for tjTODAY, I would not have found my passion, my major and my future career. As my final printed words for tjTODAY, I’d like to thank both Mrs. Seavey and Ms. Harris for their dedication and support of the publications at Jefferson. I’d like to thank every member who has been a part of tjTODAY or any other publication, because the fine arts matter. Next stop: Ithaca College, Roy H. Park School of Communications. “End? No, the journey doesn’t end here.”

Underclassmen of Prom Comm organizes dance for seniors Sandy Cho and Esther Kim News Editor and Sports Editor The balcony of the Sunset Room led to a stunning view of the Ferris Wheel and Washington, D.C., the dance floor unleashed inner dancing kings and queens and the photo booth captured silly and poignant memories of the night spent with friends. With the theme of “Sunset Soirée,” class of 2014 held prom on May 31 at the National Harbor, located in Maryland. However, lurking among the partygoers were underclassmen responsible for organizing the extravagant dance — the Prom Committee (PromComm). The entirety of its preparation was done in conjunction with the 2015 Junior Class Council. “PromComm’s job this year was to set up for 2014 prom and make sure everything was perfect for the seniors when they arrive,” junior Anant Das, a member of PromComm, said. PromComm consists of juniors Sanjoli Agarwal, Nan Baker, Mona Bugaighis, Das, Tahia Emran, Sarah Falls, Charlene Franke, Conrad Gehrki, Nihar Gudiseva, Arthur He, Danial Hussain, Jenny Kim, Monique Mezher Anugya Mittal, Shreya Punya, Puneeth Sai, Morgan Sizemore, Sage Teasley, Aleesha Toteja and Helen Zhang. The members were selected by the 2015 Junior Class Council. The members of PromComm discussed preparation by discussing with the class of 2014 PromComm chairs, seniors Laura Duke and Sib Shewit, who listed all the priorities needed for the dance. “We all met up at the Sunset Room in National Harbor photos courtesy of Top Hat Photo Booths

a few hours before prom to start setting up,” Das said. “Fortunately, we arrived early enough that we could solve many of the problems that were not anticipated beforehand.” The junior members of PromComm hope that their early experience with the preparation for prom will assist the organization of their own dance next year. Currently, they have been searching for venues and creating a list of at least three bids to get approval from the Fairfax County Risk Management. “I want class of 2015’s prom to be memorable. But as far as the venue and theme goes, I want it to be elegant and timeless,” Sizemore said. “And with the venue that we’re planning to go with, it looks like we’re on the right track.” Senior Tim Ruiter enjoys the view at the National Harbor. photos by Will Ryu
