Hi, my name is Izzy Ewen and I’m Magazine Co-ordinator for Discover. Publishing your local magazine keeps me busy but I’m not complaining, I love it and admit to enjoying a few perks of my job. Firstly, as I research for the What’s On pages six weeks in advance I’ve become the team Entertainments Officer! I find out about all the fantastic events going on and tell Melanie and Tania. Last week Melanie and I went to a talk by Shaun Attword at Winchester University put on free by the Criminology Department which was quite eye opening (check out www.shaunattwood.com!). Tania and her daughter enjoy local theatre so she booked tickets to see Tunnel of Love at Titchfield Festival Theatre (warning…bring a blanket!). In my spare time, I sell vintage scarves and sussed out two fairs in Lymington and Lyndhurst to sell my collection (please like my facebook page Avant Scarves!) We also get the odd free ticket to gigs at The Brook in Portswood; a great place to see up and coming bands and tribute acts (www.the-brook.com). Secondly, when I need a window fixed, carpets cleaned or blinds made I have an instant access to all our advertisers; over 350 of them now. We pledge to use our own advertisers first and foremost and we shop locally whenever possible. If you contact any of our advertisers please remember to tell them where they were “Discovered”. Melanie and Tania say Hi, too!

10 Highlights of a Holiday in Croatia Relax on the beach

View from Rozac

apartment balcon

y

Just a week or two in the unspoilt Dalmatian coast gives you a taste of what croatia has to offer; history, sun, sea and lots to do. if you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet here’s ten tempting reasons to choose croatia this year.

1 Historical town of Trogir;

Wind your way round the narrow, cobbled streets, wine and dine under the palms of the “riva” in view of the super yachts berthed nearby.

2 3

Hire a speedboat for the day.

Swim in the falls of the Krk National Park.

4

Visit Split by boat from Trogir. Walk amongst the Diocletian’s Palace, set within the centre of Split itself

5 Okrug Gornji beach, Ciovo.

Be served drinks while you soak up the sun.

6 From dolphin watching to

spearfishing, bike tours and island hops to Hvar; excursions all start from Trogir so take your pick.

Krk Falls

6

7 Laganini Beach Club... heaven.

8

A day trip to Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

9

Ride the Cetina River in many ways; by raft, canoe, kayak, abseil or just in a wetsuit and drift downstream.

10 Relax by the pool at

Rozac, a luxury 3 bedroom apartment with two balconies, air conditioning and private pool. Located in the heart of Ciovo island, walking distance to Trogir and five minutes stroll to the beach. When’s the best time to go? Peak season is July and August so it’s bustling and weather is beautifully hot. June and September is quieter and a little cooler.

Some excursions might not operate in May and past 15 September. What’s the currency? Kuna and good value for money at current exchange rates. Do they drive on the left or right? On the right but with the network of water buses and boats you don’t need to hire a car. Rozac apartment is available for rent from May to September. Low cost flights from Gatwick and Heathrow to Split. Call Melanie Tinson on 023 8027 6396 or 07900 307636 for availability and costs. Prices from £450 per week.

Moyles Court School is within reach for hard working families A new affordable price structure and door to door service means many more families can consider an independent education. Moyles Court School near Ringwood in the New Forest is totally in touch with the families it is looking to attract. With an excellent reputation for education and learning tailored to the individual, Moyles Court has looked at other critical considerations – fees and accessibility to take account of busy parents juggling work commitments. Headmaster Mr Richard Milner-Smith said: “Independent education is sometimes thought of as exclusive, the preserve of the very rich only. Our aim is to overcome that prejudice and to convince many more parents that it is the right choice for their children.” At a time when most independent school parents will be contemplating another above-inflation annual rise in fees, most families at Moyles Court School will be paying an average of 15% LESS next school year than they are this year.

Mr Milner-Smith added: “What Moyles Court has to offer is, in a sense, beyond price: an education, tailored to the individual needs of each child, in an idyllic setting. As well as our listed main building, we have enviable modern facilities including a new library, modern sports hall, outdoor multi-sports courts, extensive playing fields and art and ICT studios” “By reducing the financial cost very substantially we intend to show many families that they can in fact afford the undoubted benefits of an independent education for their children.” www.moylescourt.co.uk/join-us

Choosing a Sixth Form Choosing A That’sForm Right Sixth For You That’s Right

For You

By Carol Geddes, Barton Peveril

Your choice of sixth form college will have a direct impact on your chances of success when the time comes to move on to higher education or employment, both in terms of the subjects you study and the projects and activities you involve yourself in outside the classroom. A good sixth form education is about much more than consistently strong exam results. It’s about finding a place that takes an equal interest in the aspirations and achievements of each individual student and nurtures a diverse, vibrant and positive learning community. The end of Year 10 is the ideal time to start researching your options. Use the summer term to start looking into what the different colleges can offer, where they are located and if they do the courses that you are interested in. Find out when applications open, what the process is and whether you need to meet specific deadlines. It’s really important to visit as many colleges as possible before deciding which ones to apply to. Take a look at their websites and make sure you have a copy of the latest prospectus – most colleges send supplies to schools in early September. 10 6

Barton Peveril Science Centre - south elevation showing brise soleil and new courtyard area

Colleges tend to hold open days/ evenings in early summer and again in the autumn, so keep an eye out for dates and start planning! These events are really important because they give you the opportunity to talk to teachers and current students about what courses and college life are really like. Each college will have a different atmosphere and ethos so don’t think that after visiting one they are all going to be same. It’s not until you step through the door that you get a real sense of the ‘wow’ factor and whether a place is right for you as an individual. Below is a checklist to help you decide which college is best for you academically and personally in order to tick the right boxes for university entry and job applications. The advice will also give you an idea of the sorts of questions you should be asking at open events. • Do plenty of background research on careers that interest you • If you already know your ideal career path, the best thing to do is to work backwards by checking out the entry criteria for higher education courses at www.ucas.com This will give you a clearer picture of which

subjects you need to take at A-level and whether vocational courses such as BTEC and Cambridge Technicals are also accepted • Unsure about what you want to do after college? Then the general advice is to take a broad base of subjects that you are interested in or have enjoyed at school. If you didn’t like a subject at GCSE level you are not likely to enjoy it at college and that will affect your chances of success. • Ensure that the colleges you’re considering offer all the subjects you’re keen to do, then check out the entry requirements and differences between the syllabus, facilities and additional activities that support your studies. • Look at how the courses are assessed; are they all exam based, all coursework based or a mixture of the two? The balance will vary between colleges and exam boards so don’t assume it is the same at every college or for every subject. • How flexible are the different colleges with regard to subject combinations and mixing academic and vocational courses?

• Check out the support, guidance and facilities available at each college – things like careers advice, help with time management, library facilities and learning support, if appropriate.

solving and many other skills.

• Is there specialist advice for Gifted & Talented students? What about bespoke programmes for entry to Oxford and Cambridge universities and high-flying performers and sportspeople?

• Think about transport. How will you get to college? Are there buses from where you live? What do they cost?

• Are there opportunities to get involved in lots of clubs and activities and go on trips? Ditto work experience and volunteering? All these things are an important part of a rounded education and really help with university and job applications because they broaden the mind and develop creative, communication, problem-

Bookkeeping & Payroll Services

POPPIE CONSULTANCY

For Sole Traders, Partnerships & Limited Companies

Thinking of Outsourcing Your Payroll? A Payroll Bureau takes care of all payroll requirements for a number of businesses rather than the job being done in-house. A bureau will service any requirement from a company with one employee paid on a monthly basis to companies with a weekly payroll for many employees. Processing includes inputting of all data including starters, leavers, P45s, SSP, SMP, SPP, P60sholiday pay etc. They also produce required reports including PAYE payments due, payroll journals to name a few as well as taking care of Year End. There are many reasons why switching to a Payroll Bureau is a good idea; saving on software costs, staff training/recruitment, having cover for sickness or holidays, holding sensitive payroll data off site, reports to suit your needs and Auto Enrolment pension administration services. With increasingly complex compliance legislation and amendments, such as the new holiday regulations and auto enrolment, could your company afford ‘late payment’ charges if you forget to file a return on time? Unfortunately negligence is not an option! Poppie Consultancy offers a professional and friendly service, giving its clients peace of mind knowing that payroll requirements are being met leaving them to focus on more of the important day to day business issues. For further details and/or a free quote, please feel free to call Denise on 07774849116 or visit website www.poppieconsultancy.co.uk 12

Burley based family business New Forest Cider has created a new cider to celebrate their support of the New Forest Trust’s Love the Forest campaign – and is donating a proportion of the selling price from each bottle sold to the campaign. The new Oak Soaked Cider, is a dry lightly sparkling cider which is soaked in oak chips during the production to give it a distinctive mellow smoky flavour. For each bottle sold, 20p will be donated to the Love the Forest campaign, which raises funds for New Forest conservation. Mary Topp from New Forest Cider said: “We are proud to be supporting Love the Forest and the incredible work they are doing - and we know our customers are very aware of the importance of securing the future of this special place” “Our cider is sold in 5 local branches of Waitrose, at London’s Borough Market as well as at our own shop in Burley, which is open 7 days a week throughout the year and on our website – and we even serve a special Cider Rarebit in our Cider Pantry Tearooms!” Mary’s father, Barry Topp who established the business in 1988 said: “When we think of the New Forest, we think of Oak and we think of Cider – so it felt entirely natural we should call the new Cider “Oak Soaked” “As a fourth generation New Forest commoner with stock on the Forest, I encourage everybody to get involved in supporting the work of the New Forest Trust.” 15

Totton & Eling Arts Festival We are looking forward to our second Totton & Eling Arts Festival which will take place 23rd May 2015. We will be holding all of the fun and activities at Hanger Farm Arts Centre and Hanger Farm Park. We plan on giving your senses a real treat! The festival is all about enabling everyone within the community, regardless of their background, to enjoy and experience the arts through our family friendly event. This year, Hanger Farm Performing Arts Centre will play host to the event. This stunning 18th century converted barn and surrounding green space is the perfect home for a local arts festival. We will showcase the amazing talent that Totton and Eling has to offer through a range of diverse activities including art exhibitions, photography competitions, street art, live music, local dance and theatre groups, dance performances, as well as running a variety of interactive arts workshops for everyone to enjoy. Most events will be free or a small charge to keep activities accessible to all. Also on the Saturday there will be a large outdoor Arts and Crafts Market, this will be held on the recreation ground at Hanger Farm. There will be a field of local arts and crafts people selling their unique hand made items. Also on in the park there will be children’s ‘have a go’ workshops and large scale out door performances. We are especially excited about our circus skills tent and music workshops. This really will be a fun day out for all the family focusing on the Arts and what you can do to join in and have fun.

CAKE AND BAKE

Chocolate Fondant Puddings

Serves 4

these divine puds have a wonderful molten chocolate centre which oozes out as you cut into them. take care not to overcook them and serve immediately otherwise the liquid centres will start to set. Serve with a dollop of tangy crème fraiche or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate indulgence!

Ingredients: • 100g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 100g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 100g good quality dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 2 large eggs • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 20g plain flour • Mint sprigs, to decorate • Few strawberries and chocolate shavings, to serve

Ready in 35 mins

TIP If you don’t have individual pudding basins then use small ovenproof ramekin dishes instead. 24

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Lightly grease 4 x 175ml capacity individual pudding basins with the extra softened butter and sprinkle with the extra caster sugar. Place on a baking tray.

2. Place the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for about 5 minutes.

3. Place the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and flour in a bowl and, using a hand-held electric whisk, beat together until smooth and creamy. Fold in the cooled chocolate mixture and pour into the prepared pudding basins.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the puddings are risen, puffy and just set on the outside- they should have a slight wobble and still be runny inside.

5. Leave for a few seconds then turn the puddings out onto serving plates. Decorate with mint sprigs and serve with the strawberries and chocolate shavings.

Lyndhurst Drama and Musical Society Lyndhurst Drama and Musical Society presents RolePlay by Alan Ayckbourn. Justin and Julie-Ann, both in computers and hopelessly mis-matched in love, are about to introduce their respective parents to each other over dinner – Justin’s upper crust alcoholic mother from Surrey and Julie-Ann’s bigoted Yorkshire father and prim mother. Into this doomed scenario drops Paige Petite, a former lap-dancer, and her thick, gun-toting minder. They proceed to wreak havoc on the meticulously planned evening but the brilliantly orchestrated mayhem is tempered by subtle insights into family relationships and class distinctions. roleplaly by Alan Ayckbourn 23/24/25 April 2015 at Vernon theatre, Sandy Lane, Lyndhurst. Curtains up 19:45. Tickets £8 Thursday, £9 Friday and Saturday available from The Gadget Tree, High Street, Lyndhurst or call 02380 282729.

PETS Why a Luxurious Bed is Important for your Elderly Dog A comfortable place to rest their head, extra support for arthritic bones and a little extra TLC - dogs need all of these things as they grow old. You can make their twilight years a happy time for both of you simply by being aware of the issues they face, and what you can do to help.

Answers on page 46

An orthopaedic bed with a memory foam mattress will support their joints by moulding itself around them, helping with blood circulation and providing a comfortable place to rest. Problems such as hip dysplasia often show themselves in middle age, so even if you don’t consider your dog to be elderly, it may be worthwhile investing in this type of bed. What types of luxury beds are there?

Self-heating Metallised insulation is placed below the lining, and radiates heat. Covered with a sheepskin or fleece outer layer, this would have therapeutic benefits particularly if your house is draughty. Elevated On the theme of draughty houses an elevated bed keeps your dog away from a cold floor, and is available in a range of sizes. Luxury materials One of the most important considerations is the material used to make the bed and mattress. You can buy alpaca fibre and soft fleece fillings, but it’s also important to think about practicality, so zip-off covers should be a priority to maintain hygiene. A luxurious place to sleep is important for dogs of all ages, but particularly so for those in their later years. By Ann Haldon

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Waterside & New Forest areas and Justin is finding that his approach

is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GARDENING

Going Potty for Summer Plants by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com

I am a great fan of hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, but this year why not include some unusual containers and planters to bring a different look or even a bit of humour to your garden? You can use almost anything as a planter. I have seen some really crazy plantings in disused hand basins, loo cisterns or even the lavatory itself! If you are using something like a hand basin which only has one plug hole in the bottom, make sure that you cover it with pieces of broken crock and then perhaps put an inch or two of course gravel in the bottom of the container before you put the compost in. But there are plenty of other normal household objects which can be used. How about that old watering can that’s sprung a leak? Whether you have a traditional galvanised can or a more modern plastic one, you can have great fun

32

planting it up with bedding, particularly if you choose something like trailing blue lobelia to come spurting out of the top and perhaps even the end. Buckets too can look really good fun and if you have one which still has its handle firmly attached, then you could use it as a hanging basket. Old footwear with can be turned into planting with real flair. If you use old gardening boots or a pair of shoes, you are unlikely to need to add extra drainage as they invariably drain well. But if you are going to recycle a pair of wellies, then you may need to punch a few holes. Again cascading plants can look particularly dramatic, but a bunch of bright red geraniums or the spiky hedgehog-like foliage of a bright green or variegated grass can look particularly eyecatching. See if there’s anything in your kitchen cupboards that could be recycled. An old saucepan, casserole pot or even a mixing bowl or jug can make an attractive planter. If the container is large and there are no drainage holes in it, then the other option is to plant it up

as a mini bog garden and use moisture-loving plants in it such as hostas or pond-side irises. Colanders or sieves also make interesting and unusual hanging baskets. You can simply plant one or two upright specimens in the centre of the colander and then use plenty of trailing plants around the edge and allow them to cascade down. You could even create your own living tea set with an old sizeable teapot and some large mugs full of favourite summer bedding. Larger items such as old wheelbarrows or chimney pots can often be bought very cheaply from a local salvage or junk yard. Something like a wheelbarrow gives a huge planting area and because it holds such a large volume of compost, it will also mean it will be less inclined to dry out. All these containers can be treated in just the same way as a container that you have bought from the garden centre. As I mentioned drainage is of great importance, but when it comes to choosing a compost and the plants themselves, you need nothing any different from when you are planting up a more traditional container and believe me you can have a lot more fun!
